It is a great pleasure to invite you to europa cantat xvii in the
Dutch city of Utrecht in the summer of 2009.
We can already imagine the 3500 participants singing in the
attractive venues of this charming city - choirs, ensembles and
soloists rehearsing, performing and inspiring each other from
early morning till late at night.
You or your choir are welcome to take part in all this music
making, and we sincerely hope you will join us. You are hardly
likely to regret this wonderful opportunity to learn from others
and to sing for an enthusiastic audience.
The Europa Cantat artistic committee, including leading lights
in the European choral world has drawn up the programme of
ateliers: listed in this brochure are 35 ateliers of all types, lasting from 5 to 8 days, for you to choose from. You will find new
themes and rich musical traditions from various cultures, as
well as combinations with other arts, since the multicultural
and multidisciplinary approach is the theme of europa cantat
xvii. And if you only wish to take a small bite of our festival,
you are welcome to come for one or more days and to choose
from more than 30 discovery ateliers, introducing you to new
styles and techniques.
For conductors, the festival offers a challenging programme of
more than 20 different seminars!
This festival is for everyone who loves singing, whether you are
young or old, a beginner or an advanced singer, and whether
you are looking for adventure or the well-known. A team of
fascinating conductors is ready to coach you and inspire you to
give a wonderful atelier concert.

The europa cantat festivals are
renowned for their inspiring
atmosphere. They offer singers
the opportunity to spend ten days
studying vocal works with many
fellow singers without any competitive element. In a wide range
of ateliers, directed by specialised conductors from all over the
world, you can explore particular
compositions, genres or vocal
techniques.
If you are a conductor, you can
join the conductors’ programme
that runs parallel to the singers’ programme. Together with
many colleagues from Europe and
beyond, you can get to grips with
hot topics in the world of choral
conducting today.
If you are young and a talented
choral organiser, there is a special
training programme for you.

How can you
participate in
this festival?
Your main activity will be participation in a singing atelier or the
conductors’ programme. Furthermore, you will be offered many afternoon concerts and every night
a full-scale evening programme
with Open Singing, concerts and
dance parties. Naturally, your
choir will have the opportunity to
take part in a concert.
Ateliers
europa cantat xvii offers you 35
singing ateliers of 5, 6, 7 or 8 days,
each of which ends with a public
performance. Registration for an
atelier brings the commitment to
attend all rehearsals and the final
performance. Select your first,
second and third choice when
registering. Choirs can split up
into groups and attend different
ateliers.
Short discovery ateliers
There will be 30 discovery ateliers,
covering less usual genres and
techniques. They take only one
morning and have no public
performance. You can join these
mornings in the ‘empty’ days after
your entire atelier has ended. Oneday visitors can also sign up for a
discovery!

You can decide to join a discovery
atelier on the day itself. Details of
these ateliers will be published on
the website in January 2009.
Perform with your choir
Participating choirs can perform
in one of the afternoon concerts.
In order to draw up a balanced
concert schedule, the festival
needs a recording of your choir.
This is not meant as an audition.
We can offer interested choirs
additional performance opportunities in the region and on open
stages in the city centre. For

Utrecht!
Utrecht is the fourth biggest city
of the Netherlands. It is at the
very heart of the country and lies
in the region with the same name.
Utrecht is an ancient town, a jumble of charming little streets and
atmospheric canals. The city has a
compact, historical centre which
boasts the 14th-century Dom
tower as orientation point. Participating choirs will also spread out
across the province of Utrecht to
sing to the public at the many fine
concert venues.
The Netherlands have an excellent
railway and motorway network.
Utrecht Central Station is an easily accessible mainline junction;
there is a direct 30-minute train
link from Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam), and Utrecht is easy to
get to by car or bus as well.
Parking in the city is expensive.

Herma van Piekeren (the Nether-
lands) specialises in teaching
children to sing. She has worked as
a musical director at Joop van den
Ende Theatre Productions in The
Lion King, The Sound of Music and
other musicals. She is joined in this
atelier by the director and choreographer Simone van Gog.

Sing close harmonies that will make the tiny hairs on
the back of your neck stand up. You will learn several
Barbershop songs, adding the interpretation, perfectperfecting the synchronization and tuning, and finally a
touch of simple choreography to liven the whole
package!

Doug Harrington (USA/Sweden)
has been singing close harmony
and barbershop from his early
youth. He was founder of zero8, a
successful Swedish male a cappella
choir, and is renowned as one of
the finest vocal coaches in male
and female Barbershop music.
A4 Arabic-Hispanic Journey
Thanks to the Arabian presence in Spain, Spanish folk
music has a unique character. With folk instruments,
and a Flamenco ‘cantaor’ as soloist, you will discover
the wonderful melodies and rhythms in contemporary
choral arrangements.

Xavier Puig Ortiz (Catalonia,
Spain) is a choral and orchestral
conductor. He was assistant
conductor of the Spanish National
Youth Orchestra and of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra.
Nowadays he conducts the
Chamber Choir of Lleida.

Under the motto “life is hard and music is fun!”, there
will be a lot of singing, dancing and interaction. You
will learn music from different parts of South Africa in
different languages.

Johan Rooze’s (the Netherlands)
most important teacher was Ward
Swingle, who taught him much
about leading choirs and arranging. At home as a conductor in
both light genres and classical
repertoire, Rooze is active as an
artistic adviser, clinician and guest
conductor.
After the success at the 2003 europa cantat festival in Barcelona,
Dwight Jordan (USA) is back.
He plays an important role in the
development of the show choir
genre and is considered to be one
of show choir’s most influential
choreographers.

and experience African traditional
music, Sidumo Jacobs (South Africa) is the conductor you’re looking
for! In summer 2007 he conducted
the World Youth Choir.
A8 Karl Jenkins’ Music
Karl Jenkins (1944) is one of the most prolific choral
composers of this moment. In this atelier, you will
perform his recently composed Stabat Mater for choir
and orchestra.

Pasi Hyökki (Finland) is founder
and artistic director of the succesful EMO Ensemble and Talla Vocal
Ensemble; in autumn 2008 he will
take up the post of director of the
Tapiola choir. As a sopranist, Pasi
specialises in contemporary music.

If you enjoy singing Romantic choral works in a large
choir with orchestra, this is for you! Discover the AmAmbrosian Hymn for double choir by the Dutch composer
Diepenbrock as well as music by Mendelssohn (Psalm
98, op. 91).
Volker Hempfling (Germany) led
the church music department at
the Robert-Schumann-Hochschule
in Düsseldorf. He is the founder and
conductor of the Kölner Kantorei.
Florian Helgath (Germany) began

at Regensburg Cathedral. As
conductor of the Via Nova Chor, he
specialises in new a cappella choral

especially for this atelier. Sanna will show you how
to express the music with your voice, face, body and

VocaalLAB Nederland is an international ‘lab’ for singers and composers. Together they develop and
perform vocal and vocal-theatrical

Discover the musical treasures from the starlit and

Habek, the Utrecht centre of

These choral arrangements of folk songs and folk-infolk-inspired music will transport you to the warm, southern
world of young Mediterranean composers.

Stojan Kuret (Slovenia/Italy)
has achieved great international
success as a choral conductor, winning prizes in Tolosa, Maribor and
Arezzo. He was conductor of the
RTV Chamber Choir Slovenia and
in 2007 became conductor of the
Italian Youth Choir.

“Folk music is an instinctive manifestation of the
people’s musical emotions” as Béla Bartók stated. We
are going to invoke the music of the nations in CentralEastern Europe – including Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary,
Romania, Slovakia and Serbia, presenting them in
their authentic form with folk instruments and dance.

Tamás Lakner (Hungary) won
many prizes at international choir
competitions and recorded the
complete male-choir oeuvre by
Zoltán Kodály. He enjoys fame in
his country as leader of the vocalinstrumental folk music group
Szélkiáltó.
These compositions and arrangements for female
singers will challenge you. The rhythms of the Balkan
States are energetic and exciting!

If you are an advanced choir singer between 18 and 30
years and wish to improve your choral singing skills,
you can take the chance to audition for this advanced
chamber choir. It will consist of young, outstanding
singers from all over Europe and beyond. You will
perform music of the 20th and 21st centuries, including
a commission from the Dutch composer Joost Kleppe.

For choral conductors this festival offers a
programme that runs parallel to the singing
ateliers. You can take part in the seminars
and in the study tour, whenever you like.
The seminars include lectures, reading sessessions and demonstrations. The study tour
visits ateliers.

Families/Kids
The festival offers activities for children of
all ages.
F1 Musical kindergarten from 0 to 6 years.
Young children will be looked after by
professional carers and their playing will
include little musical activities. Children
can attend in the morning only or in the
morning and afternoon for the length of
stay of the parents.
F2 Kids’ Funworkshops for individual chilchildren from 6 to 12 years. They make music
and sing with other children of the same
age from many countries. Professional mumusic teachers and an educational team will
help them to prepare a final presentation.

The Kids’ Funworkshops commence on
Saturday 18 July. The minimum participaparticipation is until Wednesday 22 July and the
maximum until Saturday 25 July.
Children’s choirs can join ateliers intended
for their own age groups.
F3 Summer Camp for youth from 12 to
16 years. Led by the Dutch organisation
Buitenkunst. The youth will work on a
musical theatrical performance at a location
very near the city of Utrecht where they
will stay throughout the week. Visits to the
festival will be part of the programme, as
will their own public performance.

Singing with others is a special experiexperience, and singing with thousands is simply

will be Michael Gohl (Switzerland), who is
well-known in Europa Cantat and a popular

For all participants applying before the deadline of 1 November
2008 we guarantee a place at the

‘first come, first served’, but on

about your atelier.
Late applications may be successful, but the choice of ateliers will

Your registration is only valid
after payment of € 110 per person
(€ 95 for registration before 1

advance payment on the total

register via the website you will
be redirected to a safe site with
various possibilities for electronic payment, including bank
transfer and credit card. Payment by credit card costs 5% extra

Cancellation rules
If you cancel your registration before 30
March 2009, your advance payment will
not be refunded. If you cancel between
30 March 2009 and 15 June 2009, 50% of
your total fee, including food and accommodation costs, will be retained.
If you cancel after 15 June 2009, your
entire fee, including food and accommodation costs, will be retained.
These rules apply irrespective of the
reasons for cancellation. Please, arrange
a travel cancellation insurance.

Maaltijden
Het festival verzorgt het avondeten in de Jaarbeurs. Voor de

van uw verblijf. U kunt ook zelf

Inschrijving
Schrijft u zich vóór 1 november
2008 in, dan heeft u de garantie
dat u kunt meedoen aan een van
uw drie keuze-ateliers. Bij de
indeling van de ateliers wordt
gelet op een goede balans tussen
stemsoorten, nationaliteiten
en leeftijd. Hier geldt niet ‘wie
het eerst komt, het eerst maalt’.
Begin maart 2009 hoort u in welk
atelier u bent ingedeeld.
In principe is inschrijven na 1
november 2008 mogelijk. De
keuze aan ateliers zal dan echter
beperkt zijn, en accommodatie
kan niet worden gegarandeerd.
U kunt zich inschrijven via de
festival website. U schrijft zich in
als koor, als groep of als individu.

Annuleringsvoorwaarden
Betaling
Uw inschrijving is alleen geldig
na betaling van het voorschotbedrag van € 110 per persoon
(€ 95 vóór 1 november 2008). Dit
moet uiterlijk 1 april 2009 op de
rekening van het festival staan.
Daarna ontvangt u een rekening
voor het resterende bedrag, dat
uiterlijk 15 juni 2009 betaald
moet zijn. Bij uw inschrijving op
de website wordt u doorgelinkt
naar een beveiligd gedeelte, met
daarop verschillende mogelijkheden voor electronisch betalen
(o.a. bankoverschrijving en

Si vous souhaitez goûter à
l’atmosphère du festival, vous

‘discovery atelier’ ou un séminaire pour chefs de chœurs, en
participant au Chant Commun
et en assistant aux concerts du
festival programmé ce jour-là.
Les participants à la journée
achètent la ticket (journée) le
matin; ils doivent organiser euxmêmes leur hébergement et leur
restauration.
Hébergement
Pour l’hébergement, le festival
propose les options suivantes :

Vous avez besoin d’un hébergement au moins jusqu’à la nuit

spéciaux pour le festival. La

Restauration
Les dîners sont organisés par le
festival à la Foire Expo d’Utrecht,
à proximité de la salle où se déroulent les concerts du soir. Pour
le midi, vous pouvez choisir entre
un repas chaud cuisiné servi dans
un lieu unique et un panier repas
à emporter. Vous devez réserver
vos repas à l’avance au moment
de votre inscription; vous choisissez une formule pour toute la
durée de votre séjour. Vous pouvez également choisir d’organiser
vous-mêmes vos repas.
Le dernier petit-déjeuner est
prévu le jour de votre départ. Le
premier déjeuner est celui du
samedi 18 juillet et le dernier déjeuner est celui du jour précédant
votre départ. Le premier dîner est
prévu le vendredi 17 juillet et le
dernier dîner est prévu la veille
de votre départ.
Partitions
Les partitions d’ateliers ne sont
pas incluses dans les frais d’inscription. Vous pourrez acheter
les partitions nécessaires, dans
l’édition souhaitée, auprès de
l’éditeur du festival, dont les

Nous garantissons à tous les
participants qui s’inscriront au
festival avant la date limite du
1er novembre 2008 une place
dans l’un des trois ateliers
choisis. La répartition dans les
ateliers n’aura pas pour seul principe le « premier arrivé, premier
servi » ; la répartition prendra en
compte différents éléments pour
favoriser un bon équilibre des
pupitres, des origines géographiques, des tranches d’âge, etc.
Vous serez informé début mars
2009 de l’atelier dans lequel vous

êtes affecté.
Il est possible de s’inscrire audelà de la date limite, mais avec
un choix d’ateliers restreint et
sans garantie de pouvoir être
hébergé par le festival.
Il est très facile de s’inscrire sur
le site Internet du festival. Vous

en groupe ou en individuel. Vous

Règlement
Votre inscription ne sera validée
qu’après paiement de l’acompte
de 110 euros par personne (95

tard le 1er avril 2009. Ensuite,
vous recevrez une facture vous

Annulation
En cas d’annulation avant le 30 mars
2009, votre acompte ne sera pas remboursé.
En cas d’annulation entre le 30 mars

Tageskarte
Wenn Sie nur einen Teil des
Festivals besuchen wollen,

oder wenige Tage vorbei schauen
und die Discovery Ateliers oder
ein Chorleiterseminar, das
Offene Singen und die täglichen
Festivalkonzerte besuchen. Als
Tagesteilnehmer können Sie sich
am Morgen des jeweiligen Tages
einschreiben. Sie sind selbst für
Ihre Unterkunft und Mahlzeiten
verantwortlich.

Als Unterkunft für das Festival
haben Sie die Wahl zwischen:

Anmeldung
Jeder Teilnehmer, der sich bis
zum 1. November 2008 für das
Festival anmeldet, erhält garantiert einen Teilnahmeplatz in
einem der drei Wunschateliers.
Die Verteilung der Teilnehmer
auf Ateliers und Unterkünfte geschieht nicht nach dem
Motto „wer zuerst kommt, malt
zuerst“, sondern basiert auf
einer Kombination verschiedener Elemente, die eine ausgewogene Stimmverteilung, eine
geographische Verteilung und
Altersbalance erlaubt. Anfang
März 2009 werden wir Sie über
die Zuteilung zu den Ateliers
benachrichtigen.
Anmeldungen nach 1. November 2008 sind möglich, aber die
Wahlmöglichkeiten zwischen
den Ateliers werden kleiner und
eine Unterkunft kann nicht
mehr garantiert werden.

Teilnahmegebühr und muss bis
zum 1. April 2009 bei uns eingegangen sein. Danach erhalten Sie

• Bei einem Rücktritt von Ihrer Teilnahme

Hands
Gastfamilies
Ruim 3000 deelnemers zullen
gedurende tien dagen ergens in
of buiten Utrecht moeten kunnen
slapen. Misschien bent u een van
de velen die één of meer deelnemers een gastvrij onthaal kunnen
bieden. Uw gasten hebben alleen
een bed nodig en een dagelijks
ontbijt. De overige maaltijden
krijgen zij op het festivalterrein.
Gastfamilies ontvangen een vergoeding van 10 euro per persoon
per nacht.
Vrijwilligers
Voorafgaand aan en tijdens het
festival zijn er veel vrijwilligers
nodig in de organisatie: gastheren
en gastvrouwen om de internationale koren te begeleiden, mensen
