The minster commended BLC’s
role in ensuring food security.
He also stressed the need for
BLC and the ministry to work
together to establish more local
companies engaged in meat
selling.
BLC Chairman Zainal said the
company

He
added
the company is

He also expressed his
readiness to cooperate with
the companies that would be
established after the lifting of
the subsidies, to facilitate the
slaughtering process according
to local regulations.
The decision to lift meat
subsidy was earlier postponed
for a month after Prime Minister
HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman

Cotopaxi volcano: Ecuador
villages evacuated
Latacungua
Ecuador’s president Rafael
Correa said yesterday
he will declare a state of
emergency as the Cotopaxi
volcano rumbled to life
and prompted evacuation
orders in several villages
threatened by landslides.
Cotopaxi volcano started
to stir Friday, registering
several small eruptions and
angrily shooting plumes of
dust and ash eight kilometres (five miles) into the
sky.
By declaring a state of
emergency - also called
a state of exception in
Ecuador - the president
can access resources and
deploy military personnel
to aid communities affected by the volcano’s activity.

The Pakistani family has
been fighting for more than 15

which (late) Syed Jafar Ali, the

He came to Bahrain in 1955
and worked as a chief engineer

There are many other

Civil Defence personnel yesterday put out a fire which broke out at a cold store in
Daih. No injuries were reported. An Asian man serving in the outlet escaped when he
saw smokes coming out the panel board. “I disconnected the electricity connection as
soon as the smoke was seen, but later the panel board exploded,” he said
to meet the requirements of the
Reform Project spearheaded
by His Majesty King Hamad
bin Isa Al Khalifa and the
Economic Vision for Bahrain,
2030, in order to be prepared to
be future leaders.
Organised by RAP in
collaboration with Tamkeen
and a number of institutions,
the camp seeks to immunise
youngsters and youth against
the scourges of crime and
delinquency, motivate them
to get prepared for the future,
seize opportunities and meet
the challenges, he said.
It also aims at training
participants to be disciplined,
self-reliant and altruistic, foster
community partnership and
consolidate relations between
the state institutions and society
and youth, he added.
Launched in 2009, the
summer camp embraces
Bahrain
youngsters
and
provides them with the required
sciences and cultural capabilities
in order to be effective members
in their society, he noted.
He pointed out that the
camp consolidates Community

important principles stressed by
the Interior Ministry, through
fostering the values of loyalty
to the leadership, assuming
responsibility and building a
strong personality.

Ritu has a penchant for

Cakesbypassion in 2013 in Saar.
In an exclusive interview
with DT News, Ritu shared
everything
about
her
fascinating business.
P
How did you get involved in
cake-artistry?
Back in 2015, when I was
in Canada, I got hooked to
a couple of TV shows on
cake-making.
I
started
experimenting myself and
everyone encouraged me to
further my interest. In 2008,
I made a themed cake for my
daughter’s birthday, and from
then on, there was no stopping.
What is the process of making
a cake design from start to
finish?
If making for a client,
the process begins with
discussion on the occasion
and the amount of time I
get. The theme for birthday
is different from that required
for a graduation party. Then I
work on the shape, size, colour
and overall design. Also, the
time for drying is different for
different fondants, so I have to
manage the steps of making
accordingly. Then comes the
actual baking part, and finally
the finishing work with all the
design elements.
Where do you find inspiration
for the floral decorations on
your cakes?
Florals are tricky as the
thickness and finish differ
for different flowers. To me,
inspiration comes in the
process of making. I made
the first floral cake for my
husband for Valentines Day
in 2013.
What encouraged you to
make cake-making a business?
I don’t think of it as a
business, to be honest. The day
that happens, I think I will
stop making cakes as I do now.
I take orders only when I am
excited about the client and
the design and I don’t see it
as a job. Most of my cakes are
made as gifts for friends or
their children.
Also, I don’t use prints,
which considerably lowers the
price, unless the client asks
for it, so my cakes are “real”.
They look amazing and taste
great. I don’t compromise on
the quality of ingredients and I
can honestly tell you that is my
success secret!
Can you share some tips for
making beautiful designer
cakes, while staying on a
budget?
That depends on the
budget and the design. One
must realize the main cost of
custom-made cakes is not in
the ingredients, but the labour
that goes into it. A lot of hard
work and detailing is done to
make Princess Elsa figurine
with her blue eyes and long
hair, or to bring the naughty
look on the Minion’s face.
Sometimes I have to redo a lot
if perfection is not attained.
Do you have an all-time
favourite design, or are you
still working on your best
cake?
I would like to believe that
I am working on my best cake
because I feel that I am just a
beginner. Whenever the client
opens the box, and then hugs me
with happiness, that becomes
one of my favourite works.

REMINISCING THE GLORY
OF PAST IN MODERN HUES
Young artist Salman Mubarak Alnajem made his mark with an innovative painting style

he three-storey house
located in a tranquil
environment in Isa town is
under renovation now. So, the
lift is yet to start working. This
artist’s studio is located on
top of the house and his living
room is at the ground floor.
It is uphill task to climb three
floors amid unbearable heat.
But his love and dedication for
painting pulls him towards the
studio throughout the day. “I
visit this studio at least four to
five times a day,” said 22-yearold Salman Mubarak Alnajem,
a well-known artist in Bahrain.
Salman has turned this
studio into his workroom
since he came here from
the UK, after finishing his
graduation in Interior Design
under University of the Arts
London. He has already
received admission to pursue
master’s degree at London’s

interview, we have to explain
about it. They consider our
overall achievements in the
field of art,” he said.
He was so into drawing and
painting since he was a child.
As he grew up, the little hobby
evolved itself to become
something more serious. This
was given special attention by
his mother who encouraged
him to go ahead in the field of
painting.
By the time Salman
reached 16, he started taking
painting seriously. When he
entered into International
Baccalaureate (IB) course at
Bayan School in Isa Town, he
chose art as his main subject.
This is where his real tryst
with painting began. After that
painting became his life.
His first art exhibition was
held about six years ago at
Al Riwaq Gallery in Adliya.
During the exhibition, many
senior artists of the Kingdom
recognised his talent and
patted his back. “Many senior
artists told me that my art
is totally a new breed which
is new in Bahrain. This
was because my style was
completely different from
others,” Salman said.
Afterwards, he took part in
more than 10 art exhibitions.
Out of them, three were at
international levels. Moreover,
he was the youngest ever to
participate and win a prize
in the 40th annual Fine Arts
Exhibition held at Bahrain
Museum.
Currently he is preparing for
two international exhibitions.
The first exhibition will be held
on September 18 at Serbelloni
Palace in Italy, where the
Milan Fashion Week takes
place. The second exhibition
would be in November in
Washington.
Most of his paintings
revolve around the theme of
importance of individuality.
“It is nothing but the ability
of a person to freely express
himself/herself raw without
succumbing to the fear of
judgment or conformtness,”
he said.
In the meantime, Salman
tries to pay enough attention
to glorious past as he is
concentrating on the issue of
modernising the significant
past. “Culture is an important
element. I want to modernise
it. I want to work with the
future, taking into account the
glorious past,” he said.
Apart from painting, Salman
is also designing a women’s
bracelet called ‘#JIRI2A’ that
is due to launch soon. The
bracelet embodies two themes:
Modernising traditions and
adding significance to the
insignificant.
Salman has high ambitions
in the field of art. After
finishing his masters in
London, he wants to establish
himself at the global level.
“The more I am recognised
internationally, the more the
arts of Bahrain and Bahrain
in general will be recognised,”
said Salman, who uses yellow
line at the bottom of his every
painting as his signature.

for bars and coins. Looking ahead,
there are encouraging signs moving
into what are traditionally the busiest
quarters for gold buying in India and
China.
Overall jewellery demand was
down 14 pc to 513t, from 595t in 2014
due to falls in consumer spending in
Asia. In China, slowing economic
growth and a rallying stock market
led to a 5pc fall in demand to 174t.
In India, the heavy unseasonal rains
in Q1 and drought in Q2 impacted
rural incomes and affected gold
demand. In addition, a dearth of
auspicious days for marriages in
Q3 meant that wedding-related
demand was unusually slow,leading
to a fall in jewellery demand of 23pc
to 118t. Overall, if we look at the
picture for the first half of this year
in India, jewellery was down 3pc to
268.8t from 276.1t (H1 2014). The
US remained steady,with jewellery
demand up for the sixth consecutive
quarter by2pc(26t). In Europe
demand was also up,with Germany
up 7pc and the UK and Spain both
growing by 6pc.
Global investment demand was
down 11pc to 179t from 200t in
Q2 2014. India was the main driver
of the fall, down 30pc to 37t, due
to uncertain price expectations and
a buoyant stock market. This was
countered by a rise in Chinese bar
and coin demand, up 6pc to 42t.In
Europe, fears of a potential Greek
exit from the eurozone saw retail
investment in gold reach 47t, a rise
of 19pc compared to last year. The
US also saw strong demand, with
retail investment increasing by 7pc.
Of particular note was the huge burst
of activity in June, when bullion coin
sales by the US Mint hit a 17-month
high.
Elsewhere,Central
banks
continued to be strong buyers of
gold. Net official sector purchases
totalled 137t, with Russia and
Kazakhstan the biggest purchasers.
Although a year-on-year fall of 13pc,
buying increased by 11pc when
compared with the first quarter of
this year. It is the 18th consecutive
quarter where central banks were net
Gold demand and supply statistics for Q2 2015
• Overall demand was
down 12pc in Q2 2015
to 915t compared to
1,038t in Q2 2014.
• Total consumer
demand – made up of
jewellery demand and
coin and bar demand
– totalled 715t, down
14pc compared to Q2
2014.
• Global jewellery
demand was 513t,
down 14pc compared
to the same period
last year, due to falls
in China, down 5pc to
174t, as well as India,
down 23pc to 118t.
The US and Europe
saw continued growth
with the US up 2pc to 26t, and Europe up 1pc to 15t.
• Total investment demand was down 11pc to 179t,
compared to 200t in the same quarter the previous
year. Demand for bars and coins saw a 15pc drop to
201t from 238t the previous year, as the sector was
affected by an expected increase in US interest rates
and a continued shift towards other asset classes,
notably equities. ETFs saw outflows totalling 23t, lower
than the outflows of 38t seen in the same quarter last
year.
•
Central bankscontinued to be strong buyers of gold,
accounting for 137t in Q2 2015, slightly down on the
equivalent quarter last year, but up 11pc compared
to the previous quarter. It was the 18th consecutive
quarter where central banks were net purchasers.
• Year-on-year quarterly mine production increased
3pc to 787t in Q2 2015, against 763t in Q2 2014.
Recycling levels were down 8pc year-on-year to 251t
compared to 273t in Q2 2014, resulting in total supply
falling 5pc to 1,033t.
purchasers of gold.
Total supply was down 5pc to 1,033t,
as an increase in mine production of
3pc to 787t in Q2 2015 was offset by
declining recycling levels - down 8pc
to 251t. The indication for H2 2015
is that mine production will slow as
the gold mining industry continues
to manage their costs and optimise
operations in the face of challenging
markets.
Alistair Hewitt, Head of Market
Intelligence at the World Gold
Council, said:
“It’s been a challenging market
for gold this quarter, particularly in
Asia, on the back of falls in India
and China. The reverse is true
for western jewellery markets, as
increased economic confidence led
to continued growth in consumer
demand. It is fair to say that
investment demand for the quarter
remained muted given the continuing
recovery in the US economy and
booming stock markets in India and
China during the quarter.
Jewellery market prospects look
healthier for the remainder of the
year with the upcoming wedding and
festival season in India. In addition,
falls in the gold price have historically
triggered buying in price sensitive
markets and we are already seeing
early indications of this across Asia
and the Middle East. Conversely,
sharp falls in Chinese stock markets
have shaken the largely consumer
investment base and we are seeing
early indications of interest in
buying gold again - all illustrating
the unique self balancing nature of
gold demand and the diverse drivers
which underpin it.”

20th March - 20th April
Now is not the time to prove
to people that you are the boss.
They would surely tighten up and
move to the defensive side of the tracks.
You are much better off taking a sensitive
and nurturing approach on a day like today. Focus your fire internally and use it to
drive your own engine.
LEO
20th July - 20th Aug
The more you let your ego and
fantasies swell today, the more
friction you will encounter with
other people. Others are not going to be
fooled, nor are they going to want to deal
with fluff and frivolity. You might consider
letting someone else take the lead while
you focus more on your energy internally.

to heart. Other people may see things about
your current situation that you do not.

YOUR STAR TODAY
TAURUS
20th April - 20th May
This is a favorable day for you to
deal with intimate and sensitive issues. You will find yourself in comfortable situations that allow you to express what
you really believe. There is no need to hold
back, because people will have a greater understanding of what it is that you are feeling.
VIRGO
20th Aug - 20th Sept
The hard work and detail-oriented planning you have done lately is
really starting to pay off. The key is to
maintain your sensitivity and look to where
you can be of service to others. The nurturing side of you is feeling the need to express
itself in a helpful manner. Follow your heart
today, and be respectful of your emotions.
CAPRICORN
20th Dec - 20th Jan
For some reason you may not
feel like you are in tune with the
situation you find yourself in today.
Try not to get too pushy when it comes to
your opinion about how things should be
done. Honor other people’s perspectives
and approaches. It may be hard for others to
commit to things the same way you can.
GEMINI
20th May - 20th June
There is a very heavy atmosphere around you that you
might feel stifling. Situations are
cropping up that are urging you to think
on a practical level in regard to your emotions. You will find that things go much
smoother if you slow down and think
about a situation before you proceed.

far from your bedroom today,
and that is fine. Take this opportunity to stick close to home and get things
done around the house that make you feel
like your energy is an important part of the
atmosphere. Be soft and gentle with your
words and actions. Just take it easy today!
AQUARIUS
20th Jan - 20th Feb
Try not to be too competitive
today. The more you try to drive
your point across, the more it will be
met with stubborn opposition. This is a better day to sit back and observe the situation.
Emotions are running high, and people are
not necessarily acting in a rational manner.
Save your ammunition for something else.
CANCER
20th June - 20th July
Just when you thought that the
whole world was turning on you,
things start to come back around.
You will find that you don’t need to hide
inside your shell. In fact, the more you let
your true spirit emerge, the more allies
you will gain. Your ambition to rule your
world is becoming an attainable goal.
SCORPIO
20th Oct - 20th Nov
Things are on the upswing for
you today. People are finally
coming around to seeing things
from your perspective. There is no need
to doubt yourself for any reason. Look in
the mirror and know that the person you
see is capable of accomplishing anything.
Your powerful emotions are your allies.
PISCES
20th Feb - 20th Mar
Sink into a soft and gentle rhythm
today in which you flow with everything around you. Ease your mind
about any worries that might have cropped
up recently. Your subconscious knows the

and intuition. These are your specialties. You
don’t need to be concerned about a thing.

I did a search on the various school
systems around the world and matching the
skill set required from students by the time
they reach university level, and in conclusion:
l The persistent gap in the middle east
can be closed by introducing new models
of teaching
l From my research I find that the
German system of Rudolf Steiner is the best
suited and will give the students the ability to
own 21st century skills
l We can save two years from our
students’ lives so when they graduate they
can be on the same footing as their western
counterparts
l We will have better return on our
education investment.
Our children deserve better.

he summer break is a good
opportunity to know more
about Kingdom of Bahrain, you
can do various educational visits
to enjoy the site and in the same
time learn some new things.
Given below are some places you
may like to visit this summer:
Arad Fort: Arad Fort is a
15th century fort and one of
the more important historic
monuments of Bahrain. It is
located on Muharraq Island
near the airport. During its
history, it served as a base
for various foreign occupiers
of Bahrain, including the
Portuguese in the 16th century
and the Omanis around 1800.
The square shape with big
circular towers at the corners
is typical of the local military
architecture. Besides beach
rock, (coral limestone) mainly
palm tree wood was used for
construction; nearby wells
provided for fresh water. This
fort controlled the navigation
between a small island and the
main Bahrain Island.
Bahrain Fort: Bahrain Fort (or
Qala’at al-Bahrain in Arabic) is
a 16th century fortress built by
the Portuguese during the times
T
when they dominated trade
routes in the Indian Ocean. This
fort is one of several built in
Bahrain and around the Arabian
Gulf to protect these trade routes.
It has been nicely restored and
is open to visitors. Just outside
the fort is a partially excavated
ancient settlement from the
Dilmun civilisation, which goes
back at least 2000 years. In 2005,
the Bahrain Fort and the Dilmun
excavations were added to the
UNESCO World Heritage List.
Barbar Temple: The Barbar
temple is 5000 year old and the
ancient sites in Bahrain centre
round the Dilmun societies
centuries ago. The ruins of the
Barbar Temple date back to the
third millennium BC, to the days
when the god Enki was in high
esteem as the god of water and
Earth and sometimes creation
itself. The Temple is a small
cluster of stone wall foundations.
There are three temples roughly
500 years apart, built on adjacent
foundations. Archaeologists
would love it, but the common
person would get bored in 5
minutes.
Make your summer vacation
a fun learning moment and
discover the culture, people,
trade and history of Bahrain.
Invite your friends, classmate
and even family members to
make it more meaningful.
Summer doesn’t mean we need
to have a break from learning
and it’s all about fun. Why not
have both? Enjoy!

The event that announced
the tie-up was attended
by senior officials of UAE
Exchange, Jet Airways, special
invitees and the Media.
Tim Evans said Market
fundamentals “remain
soft” with most observers
concluding the market will
become even more glutted
in the period ahead.
US oil producers added
two more rigs to 672 for
the week ending August
14, according to Baker
Hughes, in a sign that
oil production will likely
linger at high levels despite
lower crude prices.
Adding to the downward
pressure has been a “clearly
bearish” outage at a BP
refinery in the Midwestern
state of Indiana, depressing
crude demand, said Andy
Lipow, head of Houston
consultancy Lipow Oil
Associates.
Also
Friday,
the
Department of Commerce
confirmed that it approved
crude exports from the US
to Mexico in exchange for
an unspecified “similar”
quantity of Mexican crude,
a senior administration
official said.
Lipow said the move
could lead to the export
of 100,000 barrels of crude
from
heavily-supplied
areas of the US and would
be “supportive” of prices.
The policy could also be
“another crack in the wall”
to permit oil exports, he
said.
But Matt Smith, director
of commodity research at
ClipperData, said Friday’s
rise in US prices was
primarily technical rather
than a response to news of
the US-Mexico oil swap.
However, a full-fledged
lifting of the US oil export
ban would be impactful,
he added.
“It is a newsworthy
development but it’s not
necessarily a price mover
at this point,” Smith said.

The green light for the deal,
designed to stop Athens from
defaulting on its huge debts
and crashing out of the euro,
came hours after Greece’s
parliament voted through the
agreement after a bitter allnight debate.
A third of MPs in Tsipras’
radical-left party Syriza
rebelled against him and he
only managed to win the
vote with opposition help –
prompting fresh expectations
that he will be forced to call
early elections.
But Tsipras insisted the

“The

‘Looked into the abyss’
Syriza swept to power in
January on a wave of public
anger against steep tax rises,
spending cuts and reforms
demanded by Athens’ creditors
– the EU, European Central
Bank and International
Monetary Fund – in exchange
for two previous bailouts.
Critics accuse Tsipras of
caving to blackmail from
the creditors in agreeing
to more painful reforms in
exchange for badly-needed
cash. European Commission
head Jean-Claude Juncker said
Athens had come perilously
close to tumbling out of
the eurozone and into the
unknown, but six months of
fraught negotiations had paid
off.
“Together, we have looked
into the abyss. But today,
I am glad to say that all
sides have respected their
commitments. Greece is living
up to its ambitious reform
commitments,” he said in a
statement after six hours of
gruelling talks in Brussels
Friday.

it rose last week after China

Modi lashes out
‘CORRUPTION, A TERMITE’
New Delhi
rime Minister Narendra
Modi warned yesterday that
corruption was eating away at
India “like a termite” as he used
an independence day speech
to pledge his commitment to
eradicating graft and poverty.
In an address from Delhi’s
Red Fort, Modi sought to
silence
growing
doubts
about his leadership after key
reforms stalled in a rancorous
parliament session dogged
by allegations of corruption
involving some of his top
lieutenants.
Modi also warned against
the “poison” of communalism
in a wide-ranging speech that
lasted for more than an hour.
But it was his comments
on the dangers posed by
corruption that drew most
attention,
including
his
admission that the problem
went right to the top.
“I want to reaffirm that
this nation will get rid of
corruption. We can rid the
country of corruption, we have
to start from the top,” said
Modi.
“Corruption is like a termite,
it spreads slowly, reaches
everywhere, but it can be
beaten with timely injections.”

of millions of people still
mired in poverty in the
world’s second most populous

Power for villages
The right-wing premier, who
has been accused of being
too close to big business,
portrayed himself as a
champion of the poor by
promising to help farmers and
lower-caste dalits, formerly
known as untouchables.
Modi set a 1,000-day
deadline for every village in
India to get electricity, urging
state governments which
are responsible for power to
ensure every community is
finally linked to the national
grid.
“Even after so many
decades of independence
there are 18,500 villages in
India which do not have
electricity,” he said.
“I appeal to the states and
all other stakeholders to
connect these villages with

mopping
his brow on a swelteringly
hot day, Modi said he had

people to open bank accounts

“The poor are at bottom of
the pyramid of development
and we have to strengthen the
base of the pyramid. If they
are empowered, no one can
stop us,” Modi added.

Morsi, who was toppled

Morsi was detained without

He had faced no legal action

Lindaweni opened up a 6-2

Saina clawed back at 9-9 and

the interval, Saina increased
the gap to 15-12 but the Indian

a wide shot by the Indonesian
gave Saina a 18-16 lead.
Egged on by a vociferous
crowd, the home girl kept
fighting but a ferocious return

Lindaweni next found the net

pocketed it after her rival again
hit wide.
Lindaweni struggled with her
