Hokkaido
Honshu
Hokkaido is renowned for its wildlife,
spectacular scenery, hot-springs and
delicious seafood, and where open
roads make for comfortable driving or
cycling. Enjoy outdoor activities such
as skiing, hiking or bird watching in one
of the many national parks. Sapporo is
host to the internationally acclaimed
Snow Festival in early February.
TOHOKU
THE ALPS
NOTO PENINSULA
Comprising of six prefectures; Akita,
Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi and
Yamagata, Tohoku is certainly off the
beaten path and home to some of the
best scenery in the country, away
from the crowds. A very rural part of
the country where the pace of life is
slow and laid-back, combined with a
variety of delicious food, friendly locals
and spectacular scenery, Tohoku will
definitely reward those who venture
here with their own unique Japan
experience, often not possible in the
usual tourist areas.
If you should venture to Matsumoto,
you will not fail to notice the dramatic
backdrop to the castle – the Japanese
Alps. Covering the Hida Mountains,
the Kiso Mountains and the Akaishi
Mountains, these towering ranges
include several peaks exceeding
3,000 m (9,843 ft) in height. The main
attraction of the area is the TateyamaKurobe Alpine Route, allowing the
chance to witness the magnificent
scenery of the Tateyama Mountain
range; part of the Chubu Sangaku
National Park. The up-to-20-meterhigh snow corridor is a highlight during
spring, while summer and autumn
attract hikers with alpine flowers and
autumn colours.
The Noto Peninsula makes up the
northern half of Ishikawa Prefecture,
extending about 100 kilometers into
the Sea of Japan. The peninsula is
known for its coastal scenery and
its rural atmosphere. Because the
area’s public transportation is limited,
exploring the area is best done by
rental car, which allows visitors
much more freedom in exploring the
region’s attractions. The peninsula’s
two main centers for tourists, Wajima
City and Wakura Onsen, provide a
relaxed atmosphere different from
other cities in Japan.
NISEKO
Being in the coldest region of
Japan, Niseko has some of the best
snow powder in the world. Already
increasingly popular with foreign
tourists, the promise of some of the
best tracks in the world continues to
lure those in search of winter fun.
SHIRETOKO
‘The end of the Earth’ or ‘sir etok’ in
the language of the native people
of Hokkaido, the Ainu. As the most
remote region in all of Japan and
arguably the most scenic, Shiretoko
was designated a World Heritage
site in 2005. Numerous hikes, lakes
and mountains, not to mention the
abundant wildlife and nature will be
sure to please those in search of the
outdoors – a hiker’s paradise.
TOKYO
Also formerly known as ‘Edo’, Tokyo
is an incredibly vibrant and bustling
city. Exuding futurism, but also not
forgetting its past, there is something
for everyone in the city that never
sleeps. Aside from its world-famous
image, Tokyo also covers some
remote islands in the Pacific Ocean
known as the Ogasawara islands. Only
accessible by a 26-hour boat ride, this
is about as far away from mainland
Japan as you can get. The Ogasawara
are an ideal destination for those
wanting the ultimate in seclusion,
peace and quietness.
HAKONE & MOUNT FUJI
With views of Mount Fuji and some
of Japan’s finest scenery, Hakone
National Park can be explored on a day
trip from Tokyo, whilst an overnight
stay provides an opportunity to
experience the famous onsen and
stay in a traditional ryokan. Mount
Fuji is synonymous with Japan, and
was recently awarded UNESCO World
Heritage status as a cultural heritage.
Travelling to Hakone to view this
majestic mountain is a must for first
time travellers to Japan.
NAGOYA
Nagoya, the fourth-largest city, is a
major centre for the manufacturing
industry, notably Toyota Motors.
Nagoya is also the birthplace of
Japan’s most famous Samurai clan, the
Tokugawa. The clan’s legacy can still
be seen at Nagoya Castle and at the
Tokugawa Art Museum.

TSUMAGO, KISO VALLEY
Tsumago is an original post town on
the Nakasendo, Japan’s first highway
between Tokyo and Kyoto. This
fascinating village has a protected
status to preserve the traditional
culture, with TV aerials and electricity
poles hidden. Hiking some of the
Nakasendo will be like you’ve walked
back in history hundreds of years.
MATSUMOTO
As the gateway to the Japan
Alps, Matsumoto has a wonderful
atmosphere with a strong Samurai and
merchant history. Matsumoto Castle
dates back to 1595, and is one of four
castles designated a National Treasure.
The narrow streets of Nakamachi, a
former merchant district, are now filled
with galleries, craft shops and cafes.
TAKAYAMA & SHIRAKAWAGO
Also known as “Little Kyoto”, Takayama
retains much of the atmosphere of
old Japan with its rows of temples,
traditional shops and wooden houses.
Shirakawago and Gokayama, both
listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites,
are famous for their hands-in-prayerstyle architecture – gassho-zukuri.
KYOTO
As the ancient capital for over 1,000
years, Kyoto needs no introduction.
The city harks back to an era of days
gone by. Temples, tea ceremonies and
geisha are just a few of the things
that cement Kyoto’s place at the
heart of Japanese culture and history.
The city is known for its pursuit of
culture in the forms of art, craft,
theatre and architecture.
NARA
Dating back as early as the 8th
century, Japan’s first real capital has
several UNESCO World Heritage sites,
including Todaiji Temple and its hall
of the Great Buddha. The protected
deer in Nara Park enliven this historic
destination, which is only a short train
ride from Kyoto.
MOUNT KOYA
The first temple was founded on
Mount Koya over 1,000 years ago.
Staying at one of the temple lodgings
offers a unique opportunity for
tourists to experience Japanese
religious life. The journey from Osaka
by train and cable car also offers
spectacular mountain views.
HIROSHIMA & MIYAJIMA
As the first city in the world to be hit
by the atomic-bomb, Hiroshima has
redeveloped itself as a thriving city.
Visit the world-famous Atomic Bomb
Dome and Peace Memorial Park and
museum. A short train ride away is
Miyajima Island’s Itsukushima Shrine,
famous for its ‘floating’ torii (gate); one
of the most picturesque sites in Japan
Shikoku
Kyushu
Although connected to Honshu
by the Seto Bridge, mountainous
Shikoku remains a mysterious travel
destination for those seeking a
holiday away from the crowds.
Shikoku is home to samurai, emperors,
religion, legends and stories of old.
There is plenty of hidden yet beautiful
scenery to be discovered on this
island, including the scenic Iya Valley
and its Kazura Bridge; dating back to
the 12th century. Samurai residences
and farmhouses, mountains and
onsen, including one of Japan’s oldest;
Dogo, said to be around 3,000 years
old, and the first-century Konpira
Shrine will give a sense of awe and
wonder, and will reward travellers who
venture here.
Historically, Kyushu was an important
entry-point for foreign influence
through Nagasaki; the second site of
the atomic-bomb strike in World War II.
Nearby Fukuoka has grown to become
the island’s biggest city. Kyushu’s
dramatic volcanic landscapes provide
many fabulous onsen. Onsen towns
such as Yufuin, Kurokawa and Beppu
offer various types of onsen, including
mud baths and sand spas alongside
incredible scenery. Pottery lovers
will delight in exploring the famous
pottery kilns around Arita, Imari and
Karatsu. Kagoshima is home to one of
the most active volcanoes in Japan and
the Kirishima mountain rage – great
for outdoor adventurers. Neighbouring
Miyazaki is home to the beautiful
Takachiho Gorge, and one of the bestknown legends of Japan; the Sun
The Okinawan Islands
Goddess Amaterasu. The Emperor of
Japan is said to be a direct descendant
of Amaterasu. Further north again will
bring you to Kumamoto with its castle
and close proximity to the stunning
Mount Aso – one of the world’s oldest,
largest and active caldera. Perhaps
predictably nearby, the scenic, secreted
and beautiful secluded onsen town of
Kurokawa is an ideal place to relax or
even stay for a night.
Okinawa consists of a string of
islands to the southwest of Japan;
2½-hours by plane from Tokyo or
Osaka. Historically famous for its
involvement in World War II, Okinawa
also offers a unique cultural and
outdoor experience in stark contrast
to mainland Japan. The tropical
weather, clear oceans and blue
lagoons are perfect for diving and
snorkelling; whether on the main
island or one of the outer-lying islands
such as Miyako or Ishigaki. Iriomote
Island is covered in rainforests,
making it great for exploring the
mangroves, rivers and beaches.
Simply put, visitors who travel
here will be able to explore the
furthermost reaches of Japan in
secluded, tropical surroundings.

ONSEN
Onsen (hot springs) are a quintessential part of Japanese culture.
After a long day of walking, skiing or snowboarding, or whilst taking
in some spectacular scenery; experiencing an onsen is something not
to be missed.
RYOKAN
A ryokan is traditional Japanese-style accommodation. Originating in
the early 17th century in order to serve weary travellers along Japan’s
ancient highways, these historical inns are still very much a part of the
accommodation industry today, offering high levels of ryotei (service).
Guests sleep on futons on tatami floors, and can taste some exquisite
kaiseki (Japanese cuisine). Depending on the grade of ryokan, it is
possible to stay in rooms with private onsen.
CASTLES
Commonly known as the military nobility of historical Japan, the way
of the samurai (bushido), and the number of historical buildings and
monuments remain an integral part of Japanese culture today. Amongst
the many castles of great importance during the samurai era, notable
ones can be found in Matsumoto, Himeji, Hirosaki, Matsue, Hikone,
Matsuyama, Kochi and Inuyama; with a structure dating back to 1537.
Reconstructions of other famous castles appear in Nagoya, Osaka and
Kumamoto, whilst ruins can be found throughout many towns and cities.
MATSURI
Celebrating myths and legends, deities, customs and superstitions, a
Japanese festival is a must-see. These festivals can go on for days at
a time. Parades of colourful floats, portable shrines, dances, and some
incredibly good stall food mean that festivals are definitely at the
heart of many towns and cities throughout Japan, and indeed, Japanese
culture itself.

Highlights
TEA CEREMONY
A tradition originating in China, chado (the way of tea) is a tradition
with its roots in Buddhism. The serenity, stillness, and tranquillity of
a tea ceremony will transport you back to an era of times gone by. Tea
ceremony is an art form requiring meticulous skill and years of training.
Partaking in a tea ceremony will reveal to you a more spiritual side to the
Japanese way of life.
GEISHA & MAIKO
Synonymous with ‘Japan’, Geisha, and their apprentices, Maiko,
symbolise a Japanese tradition that is distinctly unique. Playing musical
instruments, singing, dancing, playing games or pouring drinks, Geisha
and Maiko are firmly embedded in the authentic Japan and acquire
their status through years of training. It is still possible to catch a
glimpse of, and even spend an evening in the company of these elegant
entertainers in the historical and cultural heart of Japan, Kyoto.
SHINKANSEN
Japanese transport is one of the most efficient transport systems in the
world. The entire country is connected through a vast network of highspeed bullet trains. Clean, efficient and fast; travelling by shinkansen
is by far the most convenient way to travel around mainland Japan. For
further information, see page 19.
SUMO
The traditional and most famous Japanese sport of Japan with its origins
in ancient times as a performance to entertain the Shinto deities. Its
traditions and rituals with a religious background, such as the symbolic
purification of the ring with salt, are continued to this day. Visiting a
sumo stable to see the wrestlers practice or watching one of the six
annual sumo tournaments can be an unforgettable experience.

Adachi Museum, Matsue
This tour starts with a three night stay in Tokyo where you will visit the
Imperial Palace Garden and a Bonsai Museum. A day trip to Hakone includes
Onshi Park where you can get spectacular views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi
during clear weather.
On Day 5 we take an internal flight to Matsue, or ‘water city’. During your stay
you will visit the Adachi Museum, known for its beautiful Japanese gardens
and landscapes, and Matsue Castle; one of the few remaining original castle
structures. After a tranquil city stay we proceed to the cultural capital,
Kyoto. En-route, we stop in Okayama to visit its famous castle and also visit
Korakuen - one of the three great landscape gardens of Japan.
Your Kyoto stay will be unforgettable - filled with cultural experiences and
garden visits. A visit to Tenryuji - one of the best-known Zen temples is
followed by a visit to Saihojij Temple (whenever possible). Famed for
its absolutely stunning moss garden and Buddhist ceremonies;
a truly tranquil and exclusive haven you will not fail to be
moved by the beauty and quietness of this place. You will
also see the world-famous Golden Pavilion, a Japanese
rock garden and partake in a traditional tea ceremony.

DAY 7
TAKAYAMA – SHIRAKAWAGO – KANAZAWA (B, L). Today’s tour starts with a visit to the
Takayama morning market. Head to the World Heritage site of Shirakawago with a guide by
local bus where you will be able to see this famous folklore village.
Proceed to Kanazawa in the afternoon.
Stay for 2 nights in Kanazawa.
DAY 8
KANAZAWA (B, L). Explore Kanazawa with your guide. Visit Kenroku-en Garden one of the
top-three gardens in Japan, Enjoy a Tea Ceremony experience before visiting a Bukeyashiki
Samurai House and the old town.
DAY 9
KANAZAWA – KYOTO – NARA – KYOTO (B, L). Your main suitcases will be sent on ahead to
Osaka (1-person, 1-suitcase). Please keep a small bag for your Kyoto stay.
Travel by train to Kyoto. Upon arrival in Kyoto you will proceed to Nara with a guide by local
transportation and visit Todaiji Temple (Great Buddha) and Kasuga Shrine.
In the afternoon, return to Kyoto and enjoy a walking tour of Kiyomizu temple and the Geisha
district of Gion.

ESSENTIAL JAPAN
This semi-escorted tour will start
with a morning tour of Tokyo. The
tour starts with a visit to the Meiji
Shrine dedicated to the spirits of
Emperor Meiji and his wife. Visit the
Imperial Palace East garden and
Tokyo’s oldest and most famous
Buddhist temple; Asakusa Kannon
Temple. Travel on to Mount Fuji and
Hakone National Park where you
can see active sulphur vents. Stay
in a hot-spring hotel and relax in an
onsen. Kyoto and Nara will enable
first-time travellers to feel and
experience the ‘old’ Japan.

London – Tokyo. Depart London on a
non-stop flight to Tokyo.
DAY 2
Tokyo. Upon arrival at Haneda Airport
you will be met by an English speaking
assistant who will help you board a
reserved taxi to your hotel. Stay for
3 nights.
DAY 3
Tokyo. Morning sightseeing tour of
Tokyo by coach, including Meiji Shrine,
Imperial Palace East Garden and
Asakusa Kannon Temple. Afternoon
free.
DAY 4
Tokyo. Free to explore Tokyo or you
may take an optional tour.
DAY 5
Mount Fuji & Hakone (L). Depart
Tokyo on a coach with a guide for
Hakone, visiting the 5th station of Mount
Fuji. Enjoy sightseeing in the Hakone
National Park, including a cruise on
Lake Ashi, Hakone Ropeway, and Mount
Komagatake. Stay overnight.
DAY 6
Kyoto – Nara – Kyoto (L). Transfer
with an assistant by bus to Odawara
and travel on to Kyoto by bullet train.
After lunch, take an afternoon tour to
Nara by coach, including Nara Park,
Todaiji Temple; famous for its Great
Buddha, and Kasuga Shrine. Return to
Kyoto and stay for 4 nights.
DAY 7
Kyoto (L). Full-day sightseeing tour
of Kyoto by coach, including Golden
Pavilion, Nijo Castle, Kyoto Imperial
Palace / Kitano Tenmangu Temple,
Sanjusangendo Hall, Heian Jingu
Shrine and Kiyomizu Temple.
DAY 8-9

Sitting just above the Kanto
region, lies Tohoku – the most

Certainly an area less travailed,

Tohoku is relatively devoid of
foreign tourists and therefore
an ideal place to experience the
every-day, rural Japan. Tohoku
is home to some truly beautiful

scenery. The best way to see
it is by car, and the below tour

comprising of six prefectures, the below tour incorporates two, but of
course, you can visit more if you so wish.
Arrive at Memambetsu and drive
to Shiretoko, a national park and
a very remote region; about as
far away from civilisation as you’ll
get in Japan. Drift ice (in season)
and the five lakes of Shiretoko
amongst the many hiking trails and
abundant nature and wildlife make
for some spectacular scenery.
Essentially a farming
community, Tono lies in valley
surrounded by mountain
ranges. Many of Japan’s
mythical folktales originate
in Tono, many of which have
been told from generation to
generation and are still told
to this day, including that of
Old Tales Village, Tono
the infamous ‘Kappa’ (water
goblin). Glimpses of such tales that a popular throughout Japan can be
found at the ‘Old Tales Village’ museum and the Tono City Museum.
You can rent a bicycle for a good way to see the village and nearby
surrounding areas, or you can drive to even more rural areas and
explore. Regardless of where you go, you can experience ‘Tono Time’
in some of the most beautiful countryside of Japan.
Heading out west through the countryside, you will arrive at
Lake Tazawa, situated near the centre of eastern region of Akita
Prefecture and near Towada-Hachimantai National Park. At a depth
of 423 metres, it is the deepest lake in Japan. Set in a beautifully
serene and tranquil setting, Lake Tazawa is the ideal place to relax,
visit nearby beauty spots or visit nearby hot-spring areas such as
Nyuto Onsen.

Drive on to Kawayu Onsen, a
quiet town sandwiched between
Lake Kussharo with its volcanically warm sand, and Japan’s most
beautiful lake; Lake Mashu. Holding second place for the best water
clarity in the world, there is an island located in the middle of the lake,
known as the ‘Isle of the Gods’, adding to the mystery and tranquillity
of this haven. The scenery here is simply breathtaking and you will not

wilderness. Kawayu is set at the edge of Akan National Park where

Sounkyo is situated at the foot of Mt. Kurodake. The giant gorge is
over 24 kilometres in length, and is part of Daisetsuzan National Park.
The onsen areas are surrounded with stunning landscapes. The gorge
contains lots of waterfalls, including the Ryusei (shooting-star) Falls
and Ginga (Milky Way) Falls.

Ski
Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture, has a stunning
blend of unique heritage and modern Japanese culture set
amongst beautiful beaches and natural beauty with a subtropical climate most of the year. Most of the islands, including
Okinawa-Honto, Miyako and Ishigaki can be easily accessed
from Tokyo and Osaka, as well as other areas in Japan.
Often overlooked as a ski destination, Japan has a multitude
of high-quality slopes and powder. With world-class resorts
such as Niseko and Furano in Hokkaido, Hakuba in Nagano
and Naeba in Niigata being just a few amongst many others;
Japan will not disappoint even the most serious skiers and
snowboarders.
MIYAKO
Miyako-jima is situated in the Pacific Ocean about 300 kilometres
to the southwest of Okinawa Main Island. This is the place to go if
you are after a white sand beach holiday in Japan. Water activities,
including scuba-diving and snorkelling are possible, in addition to
abundant marine life and beautiful coastline. The islands surrounding
Miyako are also within easy access via bridges. Numerous beaches
mean that you’ll never be short of sun and sand, and if you use a
rental bike or car, exploring this island is easy and rewarding.
ISHIGAKI (PART OF THE YAEYAMA ISLANDS)
Ishigaki-jima is the main island of the Yaeyama archipelago. From
mountains to coral reef and clear blue waters, Ishigaki will have
something for everyone. Aside from its beaches and typical waterbased acitivities, Ishigaki and nearby Taketomi (amongst
other islands) retain their old Okinawan culture
which is markedly different to that of
mainland Japan. Houses with red tiled
roofs and transportation by waterbuffalo are examples of this. Interisland travel is by short journeys
on ships, meaning that each
island can be easily done as a
day-trip from Ishigaki.

Located in the coldest region of Japan, Niseko

world. Already increasingly popular with
foreign tourists, in particular from Australia,

Japanese inn (ryokan) for one or two nights during your tour. This experience
is one far-removed from Western-style hotels. In a ryokan you will be looked
after from the moment you are greeted at the entrance in a more intimate
fashion, receiving the highest levels of service and delighting in the best local
food available. Whether you stay in a modern ryokan-hotel, or a traditional
ryokan, all rooms are Japanese-style, and a traditional dinner and breakfast is

towns such as Lijiang; one of China’s (if not Asia’s) most pristine and scenic areas.

DAY 1
Beijing. Meet and assist at the airport and transfer to your hotel in Beijing for 4 nights.
DAY 2
Beijing (B, L, D). Visit Tiananmen Square and the famous Forbidden City; the Chinese Imperial Palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. It now houses the Palace
Museum. For almost 500 years, it served as the home of emperors and their households, as
well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government. Visit the Summer Palace;
a luxurious royal garden for royal families to rest and entertain in the evening, enjoy a Peking
Duck dinner.
DAY 3
Beijing (B, L). Take a tour to the Badaling section of the Great Wall, and walk along the ‘Sacred
Way’, a road to the ancient burial grounds of the Ming Emperors; decorated with stone statues
representing the path that the Ming Emperors would take to Heaven. Attend a workshop and
witness Jade stone being carved. On the way back, photo stops will be made at the 2008
Olympic Stadium, also known as the ‘Bird Nest’ and the ‘Water Cube’ (Aquatic Center).
DAY 4
Beijing (B, L). Visit the Temple of Heaven; a complex visited by the Emperors of the Ming
and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. Visit a
pearl factory and enjoy an authentic Beijing experience in a pedicab as you tour the hutongs
(narrow streets and alleys) in the city´s Shichahai neighbourhood. Watch culture come alive
through the stone drums located in front of each gate, and see the layout of traditional Beijing
courtyards. You will even have the unique opportunity with a guide to briefly meet with a local
family to see how they live their daily lives.

XI’AN
A capital city through 10 dynasties, a total of 73 emperors and one of China’s
oldest cities, Xi’an is the root of Chinese civilisation and retains many relics
of its rich and colourful past. It will be of great interest to those with a keen
interest in the history and archaeology. See the magnificent Terracotta
Warriors, the tomb of the first Emperor of the Qin dynasty, and the Banpo
Neolithic Museum.

Dragon Mountain and home to unique housing made from a unique stone called ‘monkey
head’ – a combination of stone and mud.
DAY 3
Lijiang (B, L). Private full-day excursion to the Tiger Leaping Gorge and the first bend
of the Yangtze. The dramatic Tiger Leaping Gorge is home to very scenic hiking routes
through quiet villages and farmland with spectacular views of the surrounding areas. Visit
the first bend of the Yangtze River – a place where Tibetans once came to trade with the
local people and a historical crossing point for armies, now attracts many who visit for the
beautiful scenery on their way to the Tiger Leaping Gorge. See the bustling small market
town located nearby.
DAY 4
Dali (B, L). Private transfer by car from Lijiang to Dali
(3 hours one way). Set between the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake, Dali is famed for its
traditional architecture and minority cultures. Stay 2 nights in Dali.
DAY 5
Dali (B, L). Full-day excursion to Dali ancient town, including a boat ride on Erhai Lake.
Erhai Lake (Ear-Shaped Lake) located between the Cangshan Mountains and Dali, is the
seventh-largest lake in China. Surrounded by villages and temples with islands in the middle
comprising of little temples, the crystal-clear waters of the lake against the backdrop of the
Cangshan Mountains make Erhai Lake a beautiful sight to behold. Visit Xizhou village and the
local market – this old town is unique for its well-preserved Bai architecture. Historically, it
was a military fortress of Nanzhao Kingdom and a temporary palace of the King of Nanzhao.
The houses here show the unique Bai national characteristics in their painted roofs and
pillars, upturned eaves, and “dougong” systems (double bow-shaped brackets on columns
supporting upturned eaves).

Kunming (B). Fly from Dali to Kunming or ‘Spirit City’, where you will be met and transferred

located at Taiwan’s southern tip, with 37 miles of coral-rimmed shoreline along three sides of
the park providing its main attractions. Stops will be made at Oluanpi light house, Maopitou
coastal scenic area and Kenting forest recreation area. Travel on to Taitung and Longpan Park.
DAY 4
Taidong (Zhiben Hot Springs) - Taitung - East Coast National Scenic Area - Hualien (B).
Today will be the exciting East Coast National Scenic Tour. The East Coast National Scenic
Area, known as “Taiwan’s last unspoiled land”, stretches 170 kilometres down the east coast
of the island. Weathering, erosion, and accumulation have produced a wide range of landforms
here. The tour will stop at Xiaoyeliou, Sanxiantai, Stone Steps, and a marble factory showroom.
In the late afternoon, proceed to Hualien for an overnight stay at Taroko National Park.
DAY 5
Hualien - Taroko Gorge - Taipei (B). A full-day visit to Taroko National Park. Visit Taroko
Gorge, an exceptionally beautiful, narrow raving created by the Liwu river which has cut deep
into the mountains of solid marble. A road carved into sheer walls of rock rewinding its way
past forested peaks and cliffs towering thousands of feet above it, while hundreds of feet
below a river roars past gigantic marble boulders. Passing by the Tunnel of Nine Turns, Ci
Mu Bridge, stops will be made at Swallow Grotto, Changchun Temple, Shakadang Trail and
Qingshui Cliff. Continue back to Taipei and arrive at around 18:00.

DAY 1
Seoul. Arrive in Seoul at Incheon International Airport. Transfer independently to your downtown hotel (pay locally). After check-in, the remainder of the day is at leisure. Stay for 3 nights
DAY 2
Seoul / Korean Folk Village (B). Join a full-day city tour of the metropolitan city of Seoul,
where old meets new in modern South Korea. Established by the founder of the Joseon
Dynasty in 1392, the capital of the Republic of Korea has a population of more than 12 million
people. Seoul is a city of incredible contrasts which, despite its immense size, make it one of
the most fascinating cities in the world. It is the heart of Korea’s culture and education as well
as politics and economics.
The tour starts with a visit to Jogyesa Temple; Seoul’s centre of Zen Buddhism. Visit Gyeongbokgung Palace (Palace of Shining Happiness) - the main palace during the Joseon Dynasty
where you can witness the Royal Guard Changing Ceremony (an alternative site is visited on
a Tuesday). Visit the National Folk Museum of Korea; the collections display complete items
from every region of Korea which illustrate all aspects of traditional life. You will then pass
by the ‘Blue House’ (Presidential Residence); before visiting either an Amethyst or Ginseng
Centre. After lunch, visit Changdeok Palace (alternative site on Monday), another royal palace
originally dating from 1412 and home to many former kings from the Joseon Dynasty, which
was beautifully restored in 1991. Visit the heart of Seoul and wander along the alleyways of
Insadong and its Art Street; a place of culture, crafts, antiques, souvenirs and gift shops.
The day ends with a visit to Namdaemun market in the shadow of Namdaemun gate; the
oldest wooden structure in Seoul. The market comprises of over 5,400 small shops selling all
manner of goods.
DAY 3
Seoul – Panmunjeom and the DMZ (B, L). A full day tour to the armistice village of
Panmunjeom where the agreement ending the Korean conflict was signed in 1953, and the
scene of many international headlines in recent years. The day includes the Korean Border
Line and the Demilitarized Zone (D.M.Z.) including the Freedom House, the Conference Site,
the Bridge of No-Return and the Joint Security Area. As one of the last relics of the Cold War,
the DMZ attracts a great deal of public interest, and is a popular destination for travellers
visiting South Korea. The DMZ and its surroundings contain many interesting historical sights
and pristine untouched natural surroundings. Most tours will take visitors to an observatory,
one of North Korea’s infiltration tunnels, a military base, and right into Panmunjeom, the Joint
Security Area in the middle of the DMZ where negotiations between the two sides are held.
From this observation platform, North Korean military personnel are visible, and so are the
highlights of Gaeseong and the Geumgangsan Diamond Mountains.
The tour starts out by taking the Freedom Highway to the Imjingak Tourist Resort where you
can visit Memorial Altar, Freedom Bridge and the Unification bell. After a traditional Koreanstyle Bulgogi lunch, visit the Unification Bridge for a passport check, after which, you will
arrive at United Nation Command Security Battalion “Camp Bonifas”. After a detailed slide
briefing, you will transfer by military bus to the Joint Security Area, Freedom House Military
Armistice Commission Building, and ‘the Bridge of no return’.

Taipei – Sun Moon Lake. Depart from your hotel and travel to Sun Moon Lake, located
in the middle of Taiwan and situated 762 meters above sea level in the lofty mountains of
Central Taiwan. The tour will stop at the famous Wenwu Temple or Literature Warrior Temple
dedicated to Confucius as ‘Master of Pen’ and to Kuan Ti as ‘Master of Sword’, Peacock
Garden, Holy Monk Shrine and Tse-En Pagoda. After touring round Sun Moon Lake, proceed
to your hotel for check-in, enjoy the spa and
hot-spring bath at the hotel.
Sun Moon Lake – Foguangshan Monastery – Kaohsiung (B). Visit Fo Guang Shan Buddhist
Monastery, the most famous Buddhist sacred place of southern Taiwan. Here you will learn
about Buddhism during the monastery walking tour, and there will be a chance to taste
Buddhist vegetarian lunch (at your own cost) and communicate with some of the monks and
nuns during the visit to the Main Shrine, Great Buddha Land where you will find a huge Buddha
statue. You will then travel to Kaohsiung City, which is the second largest city of Taiwan. The
tour will take you to Former British Consulate, Love River and Lio Ho Night Market.

PASSPORT / VISA REQUIREMENTS
Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the expiry date of your visa, for which you will also need one blank page. At the time of writing,
a standard 30-day visa cost approximately £30 plus an administration fee. Some areas of China remain restricted, and you will need an additional
permit from the Public Security Bureau (PSB). Because the visa system for China can be quite complex, we recommend that you contact the Chinese
embassy for further information.
HEALTH
Medical care outside major cities can often be sub-standard. For travel to some parts of China, vaccinations or certain medication is essential.
LANGUAGE
English is not widely spoken in China. Outside the large cities, English is almost non-existent. English is often better at youth hostels than at top-end
5* accommodation. Particularly for independent travellers, a simple phrasebook with written sentences in Mandarin is strongly suggested.

Your Financial Protection
When you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight
inclusive holiday from us you will receive an ATOL
Certificate. This lists what is financially protected,
where you can get information on what this means for
you and who to contact if things go wrong.
We, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL
Certificate, will provide you with the services listed on
the ATOL Certificate (or a suitable alternative).In some
cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to
do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL
holder may provide you with the services you have
bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to
you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances
the alternative ATOL holder will perform those
obligations and you agree to pay any money
outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to
that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree
that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint
an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be
entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or
your credit card issuer where applicable).
If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL
certificate, are unable to provide the services listed
(or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL
holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the
Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment
to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme.
You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit
you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims
which you have or may have arising out of or relating
to the non-provision of the services, including any
claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card
issuer where applicable).You also agree that any such
claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that
other body has paid sums you have claimed under the
ATOL scheme.
3) Booking and deposit
To make a booking you must complete and sign the
booking form and pay a deposit according to the cost
of your tour (per person):

Full payment is required if you are booking within
eight weeks of departure.
Bookings may be made direct to our office or through
your local travel agent. If you book through a travel
agent, upon receipt of your money your travel agent
will provide you with an ATOL receipt, which gives
the relevant details of your booking. Within 7 days of
notification of the booking to us by the travel agent we
will send them an ATOL Confirmation Invoice, which they
will immediately pass on to you. When you buy an ATOLprotected flight-inclusive holiday from us you will receive
an ATOL Certificate. This will detail where you can get
information on what this means for you and who to
contact if things go wrong. No contract for the provision
of the holiday exists between you and us until we have
sent out our confirmation invoice so that if, for reasons
such as unavailability, we are unable to accept your
booking, our liability to you will be limited to refunding to
you the full amount of any money you have paid.
All flights booked will be in Economy class and all
accommodation booked will be in the standard
rooms of the respective property, unless specifically
otherwise stated on the confirmation and invoice.
4) Payment
You must pay the balance of the price of your holiday
at least 56 days (8 (eight) weeks) before departure;
otherwise we shall be entitled to cancel your booking,
in which case we will retain the deposit. Payments
made by credit card are subject to a 2% surcharge
(non-refundable in case of cancellation).

5) Changes by you
If, after our confirmation invoice has been issued,
you wish to change your travel arrangements in
any way, for example your chosen departure date
or accommodation, we will do our utmost to make
these changes but it may not always be possible. Any
request for changes to be made must be in writing
from the person who made the booking or your travel
agent and reach us at least 56 days prior to departure.
You will be asked to pay an administration charge
of £40, and any further cost we incur in making this
alteration. We may have to treat any alterations
requested less than 56 days before departure
as cancellations and new bookings, so that the
cancellation charges referred to below will then apply.
6) If You Cancel Your Holiday
If you wish to cancel your booking, you must notify us
in writing. The following charges will apply; effective
from the date we receive your notification:

a) If we change or cancel your holiday
This brochure is prepared in advance of the holiday
season; therefore some changes to the holiday
arrangements may occur. If changes occur prior to
your bookings we will inform you of these prior to
issuing our confirmation. In some cases changes occur
even after bookings have been confirmed and we
therefore reserve the right to make changes at any
time. If the change is minor, we will inform you or your
travel agent as soon as possible but we will have no
other liability towards you. Occasionally we may have
to make a significant change to your holiday after
confirmation and we therefore reserve the right to do
so. A significant change will include a change of UK
departure point, a change of flight time more than 12
hours, a change of accommodation to a lower price or
classification as detailed in this brochure. If we have
to make a significant change we will notify you as
quickly as possible and you may then either: a) accept
the change in which case the contract will be varied
to incorporate the change; b) take another available
holiday from the brochure at its advertised price; or
c) cancel the holiday completely in which case we will
refund all monies paid to us. Please see the below box
stating the compensation payable to you, should we
have to advise you of changes within 56 days of your
departure date.
Please note that the small group guided tour
advertised on pages 8 & 9 require a minimum of
at least 2 (two) participants. Please enquire at the
time of booking. If the required minimum number of
participants is not met, we will notify you no less than

No compensation will be payable and we are unable to
offer refunds of any additional costs.
Some of the excursions included in the holiday
packages require a minimum number of participants.
Please enquire at the time of booking. If the required
minimum number of participants is not met, we will
notify you no less than 14 days before the day of
departure, and refund any monies paid to us for
the corresponding portion of your trip. Since these
are optional excursions, any cancellation would not
constitute a ‘significant change’.
b) Force Majeure
We may have to cancel or change your holiday in
exceptional circumstances like war, civil unrest,
terrorist activity and its consequences, natural or
nuclear disaster, fire, or adverse weather conditions.
In these circumstances we will not pay you any
compensation as these are beyond our control.
8) Complaints
If you have a problem during your stay, please inform
the accommodation provider immediately, who will
endeavour to put things right. You should also try to
find a solution whilst you’re there. If your complaint
is not resolved locally, please follow this up within 28
days of your return home by writing to us at our office
address, giving your booking reference and all other
relevant information. Please keep your letter concise
and to the point. This will assist us to identify your
concerns quickly and speed up our response to you. If
you fail to follow this simple procedure we will have
been deprived of the opportunity to investigate and
rectify your complaint whilst you were on holiday, and
this may affect your rights under this contract. Please
bear in mind that we are only liable to compensate you
in line with these booking conditions. Any dispute or
claim arising out of this contract that can’t be settled
between us can be referred by you to ABTA arbitration
or court (see clause 12).
9) Prices
The prices in the brochure were correct at the time
of going to print (October 2015) using exchange
rates quoted in the ‘Financial Times Guide to World
Currencies’.
Whilst we reserve the right to increase or decrease
prices of any of our tour holidays, once you have made
your booking and we have issued our confirmation
invoice, we guarantee that the price of your holiday
will not be subject to any surcharges. We will always
inform you, before accepting your booking, of any
changes to the tour price. You should, however,
note that if you amend any details of your booking
after it has been confirmed you may be subject to an
amendment fee as detailed under “If you cancel your
holiday” or “Changes by you”.

and other suppliers, unless proper performance is not
achievable due to:
a) Matters which are the fault of you and/or other
members of your party;
b) Unforeseeable or unavoidable circumstances which

the provision of these services to be performed;
c) Any unusual and unforeseeable circumstances
beyond our control, the consequences of which we
could not have avoided by exercising all due care;
d)An event which either we, or the relevant supplier,
even with all due care could not have foreseen or
forestalled.
Our liability as set out above is limited to the lesser
of: (i) (except in the case of personal injury) twice
the price of the relevant holiday; or (ii) the amount
laid down in the relevant international Conventions
such as the Montreal Convention or the Warsaw
Convention. In the case of claims for personal injury
(including illness or death) subject as above, we
only accept responsibility for the negligent acts
and/or omissions of ECT’s employees or agents and
also of our suppliers and sub-contractors whilst
acting within the scope of, or in the course of their
employment. Our liability is limited in accordance
with conditions of carriage of the relevant air and sea
carriers. Copies of these conditions of carriage are
available from our offices on request.
If the contract we have with you is not performed
or is improperly performed as a result of failures
attributable to a third party unconnected with the
provision of the services, or as a result of failures
due to unusual and unforeseeable circumstances
beyond our control, the consequences of which could
not have been avoided even if all due care had been
exercised, or an event which we or our suppliers,
even with all due care, could not foresee or forestall,
and you suffer an injury or other material loss, we will
offer you such prompt assistance as is reasonable in
the circumstances..
11) Data Protection
To make your booking we will need to use information
you have supplied to us, such as full name, address
and dietary requirements. Please be assured that
we have measures in place to protect the personal
booking information held by us. This information will
be passed on to the relevant suppliers of your travel
arrangements. The information may also be provided
to public authorities such as customs or immigration
if required by them, or as required by law. Certain
information may also be passed on to security or credit
checking companies.
12) Jurisdiction
The contract arising from any confirmed holiday
booking is to be interpreted under, and is subject
to the laws of England (and Wales). Our Terms of
Business are also governed by English Law and the
jurisdiction of the English Courts. We both agree to
submit any dispute or claim under it or connected
with the holiday to the English Courts or other legal
system within the United Kingdom. However, if you
live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can bring
proceedings in your local court under Scottish or
Northern Irish law, as applicable.
10) Our liability to you
We accept full liability for the proper performance of
our obligations under any agreement entered into
with you for the provision of a holiday featured in this
