Kerry gets set to celebrate Culture Night
The third Friday in September each year has
become an important date in the Irish arts and
culture calendar. Culture Night, which takes
place across the whole country, has been created
to give everyone an opportunity to explore and
experience arts and cultural events in their local
area free of charge.
Kerry will be well represented again this year with
events taking place across the county in Killarney,
Listowel, Tralee, Kenmare, Castleisland, Dingle,
Killorglin, Ardfert, Ballinskelligs, Ballyferriter,
Ballybunion and Waterville.
“Culture Night is a great initiative and what better
way to something new and get the whole family
out to enjoy the quality of cultural activity that
happens right across the county.’’ Cathaoirleach
of Kerry Cllr. Pat McCarthy told the Outlook.
Culture Night Kerry in Kerry is sponsored by Kerry
County Council and the Department of Arts,
Heritage and the Gaeltacht. There is something
for everyone and all events are free of charge.
The countywide programme includes visual arts,
music, dance, film, workshops and performances
for all ages, so there’ll be plenty to entertain and
experience on the night wherever you are from
6pm- 11pm.
Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Kerry County
Council said “Kerry County Council values the

Kristian becomes 51st Irish person to swim the Channel
Kristian O’Donovan, from Derrylea,
became only the 51st Irish person to swim
the English Channel last week with an
impressive time of 13 hours, 48 minutes.
Kristian, the co-founder of Tralee based
company Flúirse Education Solutions
reached the Continental European coast at
Cap Gris-Nez after a gruelling 13 hours and
48 minutes of non-stop swimming.
Real-time GPS tracking on board Kristian’s
pilot boat, Gallivant, allowed family, friends,
neighbours and hundreds of people
worldwide to track the swim route in detail
to mainland France. Kristian grew up in
Tralee, attending Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí.
As a teenager he swam competitively with
Kingdom swimming club in Tralee. Later,
Kristian spent many summers working
as a Life Guard in Ballybunion Beach and
previously Rossbeigh Beach, where he met
his wife Muireann. Hundreds of messages
of best wishes and congratulations came
flooding in online to Kristian’s Facebook
page, where each step of the swim
was documented, while Kristian’s wife
Muireann, and children Rían (12), Seodhla
(9), Aoibhin (7), Iarla (4) and Senan (2)
watched nervously from their family home
in Glenbeigh. It was a double celebration
for the family, with Kristian’s eldest Rían
winning gold in the Community Games
Spikeball Final in Athlone the previous
day. When asked about his next challenge,
Kristian explained, “It’s back to the office
now, there’s plenty of work to catch-up on
back at Pitman Training”. However, it was
his son Rían who left us with the best quote
of the day, which was texted to the crew to
show to his Dad mid-swim: “Good luck Dad,
but I’ll beat your record some day!”

Ginger Wins the Nose of Tralee
Ginger the rescue Dog who was voted The Nose of
Tralee with the 2014 Rose of Tralee Maria Walsh
and minder pic Joe Hanley
Ginger, a Tralee dog, has won the 2015 “Nose of
Tralee” pet contest with the support of the entire
county of Kerry and a staggering 15,000 votes in the
national competition. Her owner, Stacey Wallace, said
that Ginger won a free professional photo shoot with
David McAuley Photography, plus a €200 Pet Sitting
Voucher from Pet Sitters Ireland.
The Nose of Tralee pet contest is run by Pet Sitters
Ireland, a company that allows pet owners to have
their pet looked after in normal homely conditions
if they’re away or unable to look after their pet for
a short period of time. It is the second year that the
contest has been run. Open to all kinds of pets, the
contest involves animal owners in the 32 counties in
Ireland allowing their pets to compete and represent
their county.
Speaking to the Outlook, Stacey said: “The main
reason we got involved with Pet Sitters Ireland is
because of Ginger’s rescue story and we wanted her
to represent Kerry this year because she was a dog
that has been affected by cruelty.” Ginger is a very
special dog as she is known as a “Rescue Girl” who was
found back in December 2012 at a local pitch. “The
boys playing soccer there fed her and rang the Animal
Welfare Clinic about a stray dog that was loose and
needed help.”
Stacey continued: “Wendy from Animal Welfare Tralee
decided they wanted to help her, but because of
her situation the dog was so nervous she had all the
classic signs of abuse and was petrified. She wouldn’t
come next or near anybody so Wendy had to
eventually sedate her to catch her and then took her
to Veterinary Surgeon Eugene McGrath who checked
her out. When they examined her they could see she
had all the signs of being abused by somebody and
maybe dumped. In March 2013 I adopted her.” Stacey
has now set her sights raising as much money and
recognition as possible for Animal Welfare Kerry for
the next 12 months.

TRALEE AWAITS TIDY TOWNS DECISION
WITH BATED BREATH
Judging in this year’s Tidy
Town’s Competition has now
come to a close for another
year. The Judges in the national
competition
visited
Tralee
recently and their decision will
be waited anxiously.
This year, another Trojan effort
was made by Tralee people to
ensure the town was spick and
span and awash with hanging
baskets and flowers.
The outdoor staff of Tralee
Municipal Authority, members
of Tralee Tidy Together, Inspired,
the Kerry Islamic Outreach
Centre, Team Bramble, the
business community in town,
the Tralee Chamber Alliance and
Anne Connolly and her team
are among the unsung heroes
and heroines who have been
out every night collecting piles
upon piles of litter and ensuring
that the town is always tidy.
Hopefully their efforts and
the efforts of so many people
involved in various estates in
town will not be in vain again
this year.
Tralee has had a wonderful run
of success in the competition
which is sponsored by Supervalu,
winning gold over the past two
years.
Let’s hope that the County Town
can go on and receive a third
gold medal in a row when the
results are officially announced
at the end of September.
Tralee is our county town and
is a great place to live. It is
important to keep the town tidy
at all times.

Republic of Ireland Soccer manager Martin

to celebrate the opening of the new facility
which was built with the assistance of a euro
200,000 grant from the Government.
The recent controversy involving FAI CEO
John Delaney and outgoing FIFA General
Secretary Sepp Blatter came to mind as Mr
Delaney, who has special links with Tralee,
quipped that “I got five million off Blatter, if
we had sent John O’Regan we’d have got ten
million!”
Martin O’Neill, in his remarks, paid special
tribute to the Kerry team that recently

tireless efforts have ensured that the Clubs in
Kerry will now have a facility where they can
play games during the deepest of winter.

STRICTLY top class dancing
by the Rockies By Adrienne McLoughlin
In Tralee’s Festival Dome last Saturday night
the curtain came down on the 5th annual
Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser for Austin
Stacks Hurling and Football Club’s second pitch
development at Connolly Park. When this event
was first held in the Brandon Hotel in 2011 who
was to know how popular this event was to
become over the subsequent years, as Austin
Stacks made this unique fundraiser their own
as an event sometimes borrowed by others, but
never equalled or surpassed.
The introduction of Jackie O’Mahoney as
choreographer was to prove to be a major
factor in the success of “Strictly” and also the
transition to the Festival Dome at the end of the
Rose of Tralee Festival week was a favourable
factor.
The evening began with an opening dance,
which was performed by all the couples. Six
couples took to the floor in the first half:
Danny Leane and Joan Lowe - Mambo; Lorraine
Lynch and Tadhg Meehan - Jive; Tricia Higgins
and Ger Breen - Tango; Jill Hannon and Trevor
Houlihan - Quickstep; Patrick Kelly and Claire
O’Brien - Rumba; Michael Hogan and Amelie
Quenson - Samba.
During the interval, there was opportunity to
vote for performers at the ballot boxes, while
entertainment was provided by Tenacity
School of Performing Art and the Light Opera
Society Tralee, the latter performing some
items from their forthcoming production of Les
Miserables.
Anyone with hunger pangs headed to the
hospitality area for Terrys Butchers famous
burgers and hotdogs.
The excitement and tempo of the competition
was increasing with the resumption of dancing.
Couples in the second half were:
Debbie Guerin and Maurice Quilter - Salsa;
Sean Lyons and Annie Locke - Viennese
Waltz; David Heaslip and Frida Dema -Lindy
Hop; Fiona O’Connor and Kevin Boyle - Paso
Doble; Jonathon Culloty and Laura Flaherty
- Showdance; Mairead Hurley and George
Savage - American Smooth.
The entertainment at the second interval was
also well received, and was performed by

Transport Services Under attack
Transport services across Kerry are being threatened
by the operations of state sponsored companies, amid
concerns that private transport suppliers will soon be out
of business. That’s according to Indepentend TD Michael
Healy Rae
“Local transport operators providing school collections
and connectivity services to communities across Kerry
may soon face extinction as the tendering of the Kerry
Flyer allows the state-sponsored service to acquire
transport contracts from hard-working operators at a far
lower cost.” He told the Outlook
“Many of these local transport providers have been
operational in their communities for a number of decades and are concerned that the
bus and taxi services that they offer will cease to exist within twelve months. Parents
of school children availing of the services provided by local operators are concerned
that the disruption to the transport routine, coupled with the removal of the personal,
comfortable nature of private operators, will be damaging to vulnerable children and
commuters with learning difficulties”.
The tender process “essentially ignores” the outstanding knowledge of the area and
customer service provided by local operators, with the criteria for tender focusing on the
size of the vehicle and the cost of transport. The state support for the Kerry Flyer allows
the company to undercut private operators, despite many workers dramatically dropping
costs in order to continue providing their service, often to their financial detriment.
FF initiative to benefit
Kerry sports clubs
Certain sports
clubs in Kerry
can
now
apply for an
exemption to
commercial
rates under a Fianna Fáil plan that has
been initiated in a new law.
Local sports organisations which have a
bar on their premises are now able to apply
to have their commercial rates reduced so
that they would only apply to the licensed
premises and not the full sports grounds.
Applications are being accepted up to
Tuesday, September 15th.
John Brassil (Pictured above) has welcomed
progress on the Fianna Fáil initiative and is
urging all clubs in Kerry to check if they
can avail of the reduced rates.
Councillor Brassil commented: “At the
moment, clubs with licensed premises
must pay commercial rates on all of their
premises despite the fact that the vast
majority of their space is used for sporting
and voluntary purposes. This unfairly
penalises clubs that have bars and I am
delighted that the Government has seen
the merits in this common sense measure
and included it in the Valuation Act 2015.
16
27.08.15
“The Valuation Office is now placing
adverts in newspapers highlighting the
fact that sports clubs can now apply to
have their commercial rates reduced if
they have a bar on their grounds. Many
sporting organisations have been hit
by cuts to funding by Government and
they’re finding it hard to keep going.
“In order to get the benefit of this partial
exemption in commercial rates sports
clubs need to be registered under the
Registration of Clubs Act, complete an
application form and supply supporting
documentation on or before September
15th next. The application forms and
full details are available online from the
Valuation Office at www.valoff.ie, by email
at [email protected] or by phone,
01-8171033.
“This is really positive initiative for clubs in
Kerry and across the country. Our sports
clubs are part of the very fabric of our local
communities and we should continue to
support them as best we can. Legislative
changes such as this can have a really
positive impact and I’m pleased to see it
being implemented,” concluded Councillor
Brassil.
Lispole GAA
receive Grant
Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin, has received
confirmation from Minister of State for Gaeltacht
Affairs, Joe McHugh that he has sanctioned a
grant of €7,514 for Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Lios
Póil, to enable the club to install a fire alarm
system and emergency
lighting so that the facility can be used as an
Irish-language college. Deputy Griffin is
welcoming the news and
says the funding will
benefit both students of
the Irish language
and the Club.
People living
in Fear
The HSE Community
Care Services in Kerry
have issued several
hundred notices to
vulnerable recipients
of vital Home Help
throughout
the
County within the past
forthnight giving notice of severe cuts to Home
Help Hours. Independent TD Tom Fleming has
highlihghted
“This is a repeat of a similar exercise in April that
deprived many Home Help recipients of essential
Home Care time in that episode of slashing Home
Help Hours that in many cases were already
drastically cut in previous HSE reviews of the
service.” He told the Political Outlook
Deputy Fleming stated that he has been
contacted by several recipients of this vital
service who are fearful of the consequences of
any further reductions that are proposed in this
latest initiative.
“Many of these are living alone and in a lot of
instances in remote rural areas.”
Fleming has called on meetings of the concerned
public throughout County Kerry.
“Due to the Dail recess and also absence of any
Local Authority and Health Board Forum in August
there is wide spread fear that unwarranted drastic
cuts will go ahead impeded and without any
proper consultation or debate.”
Deputy Fleming stated this latest manoeuvre
is false economy by the HSE as the Home Help
service is by far the best value on a cost benefit
basis provided by the HSE, and it ensures people
have a reasonable quality of life in their own
homes and in their own communities.

ISLAMIC EXHIBITION BRINGS CROWDS
TO BRANDON: The Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Tom
McEllistrim, and Chief Superintendent Patrick
O’Sullivan were among the guests at the third
annual Islamic Cultural Exhibition which was
held at the Mount Brandon Hotel on Saturday

the positive role members of the Islamic Faith
can play in Tralee and the event was again
well supported with plenty of interested
visitors coming and going all day. Guests had
an opportunity to have their names written in
Arabic Calligraphy, a rare and wonderful art.
One of the main organisers of the event,
Dr Riswan of the Kerry Islamic Centre, was
delighted with the success of the day. Dr Kahn

LOW FIELD MASS COMMEMORATES
TRALEE DYNAMOS GREATS: A special Mass
will be held at the Low Field in Tralee this Friday
evening to celebrate the success story that is
Tralee Dynamos FC.
The Mass, which will get underway at 7pm,

The club was founded by Fr Bernard O’Farrell
OP who saw the opening for a soccer club in
the town. They played their early games in the
West Limerick Desmond League.
Many Tralee characters including the late Jim
‘Slug’ Bailey, and the late Frank Hennessy played
for the club.

In an interview in 1985, Frank Hennessy spoke
of the difficult early years of the club as many
members had to choose between playing
soccer and playing Gaelic Games. According to
Frank Hennessy, the club managed to survive
despite many obstacles being put in its way.
The success was due to the determination of
the players and the club officers.
Other well-known names associated with Tralee
Dynamos include the legendary Michael ‘Fox’
O’Connor, well-known Sports Reporter Tommy
Conroy and his brother Noel, Willie Hobbert,
John E Barrett, Jimmy ‘Wa’ O’Connor, Gerald
‘Clobber’ Fitzgibbons, John O’Sullivan, and of
course the one and only Tim Counihan, a man
whose name is synonymous with the club.
The Club has enjoyed enormous success on the
field and is currently one of the most successful
clubs competing in the Kerry District League.
In 2009, another exciting chapter for the club
was written when it merged with Kingdom
Boys FC ensuring the club now has a very
strong youth section.

IMPORTANCE OF FESTIVAL TO LOCAL
BUSINESSES RECOGNISED: The importance
of the Rose of Tralee Festival to businesses
locally was underlined again this week when
John Drummey, Head of Communications
with the Rose Festival, estimated that between
€7million and €8million was spent in the Tralee
Town area by visitors to the Festival.
Meanwhile, one Tralee publican underlined the
importance of the Festival to those involved in
businesses in the town.
Tralee publican Gary O’Donnell, who runs
Bailey’s Corner and O’Donnell’s Bar and

his pub thanking the Festival by stating that “it

FERRIS ACCUSES GOVERNMENT OF LACK
OF ACTION ON HOUSING ISSUE
Sinn Fein TD for Kerry Martin Ferris has strongly
condemned the Government over what he
termed as ‘inaction in relation to the current
housing shortage’.
Deputy Ferris was commenting after one Tralee
auctioneer this week claimed that for the first
time in over 40 years in business he had no
property to rent in Tralee.
In a statement issued to the Tralee Outlook,
Deputy Ferris stated that he had a number of
people who classified themselves as homeless
calling into his office this week. Deputy Ferris
added:
“It is heart-breaking to see the amount of
homeless people calling to my office every
week looking for assistance. That number has
been steadily increasing. Five more homeless
people called to the office in Tralee this week.
They were drained, feeling hopeless and
needing assistance. The situation is a damning
indictment of Fine Gael and the Labour Party’s
time in office”.
“We have a housing crisis of unprecedented
proportions. It is not just an issue in Dublin. It
is a national crisis. It is an emergency and the
government seem either incapable or unwilling
to do anything meaningful about it. They focus
on fancy PR exercises rather than taking any
real action”
“Sinn Féin has been calling on the government
to introduce rent controls. We also need to
build social housing as a matter of priority”.
“In government, Sinn Féin would invest €1
Billion from the Strategic Investment Fund to
build an additional 6,000 new homes in 2016.
We would meet the housing crisis head-on.
There is a way of dealing with the crisis in an
effective way”.

“We need a government with the political-will
to implement genuine solutions. I would like to
know what they would say to the five people
alone who came to my office this week?” “The
approach of Fine Gael and the Labour Party has
been utterly disjointed and ordinary people
here in Kerry are paying a heavy price.”

Margaret’s Ramblings
THE POSITIVE IMPACT THAT NATURE HAS
ON THE BRAIN:
Go out on a
walk,
basking
yourself
amid
trees, grass and
all that nature
has to offer, in
your lowest of moods, or on your most stressful
of days as nature has the magical ability to
comfort you, especially in times when you need
it most.
* Spending a day at the park or going on a hike
can make you feel incredibly energized, not just
mentally, but physically too.
* Walking in nature can improve your memory
by up to 20% and has the ability to reduce
acute stress.
* Nature has the ability to improve your sense
of focus.
* Walks through nature have a plethora of
mental-health benefits, including that of
decreasing depression and alleviating moods
and gives you the additional benefit of exercise,
which also alleviates mental health issues.
* A walk in nature will prevent you from
brooding and help boost your creativity.
IF HUMANS NEVER EXISTED, WHAT WOULD
THE WORLD LOOK LIKE?
Researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark
decided to work out projections of how
mammal species would be faring if humans
had never existed. Using natural distribution
and knowledge of the ideal climates for
existing species they believe that there would
be a lot more biodiversity and a lot more
undomesticated mammals roaming around
the world if we weren’t around to impede and
exterminate them.
As it currently stands, Africa is the continent
that boasts the most biodiversity though the
researchers found that the multitude of larger
animal species has little to do with Africa having
the best climate for these animals. Instead, the
prosperity of animals in the region is reflective
of the continent having the least human impact
on these species. Because African countries
have been slower to industrialize and have
learned to coexist with the animals rather
than exterminating them, Africa is reflective of
what the rest of the world might look like had
humans not taken control.
According to projections, if humans weren’t
around, both South and North America would
boast the most different kinds of large mammal
species on the entire planet, especially in the
central parts of these continents. Europe and
southern Asia would be the home of many
animals including elephants and rhinoceros
due to existing migration patterns.
There are still some areas that would be short
on mammal diversity even without human
interference. Places like northern Russia and
northern Canada are just too frigid to be
inhabitable by a variety of species and Australia
and the islands of Southeast Asia are too
inaccessible for species that originated in other
areas to make it to these islands.
24
27.08.15
Obviously, this world without humans is purely
hypothetical, but if we want to do a better
job of allowing animals to thrive, perhaps we
should look to Africa as an example of how
not to totally destroy biodiversity. Rather than
eliminating or blocking out any animal species
that might remotely intimidate or pester us,
we could develop policy and social attitudes
that respect natural coexistence. We could also
commit to not claiming every bit of land for our
own needs.

1798 - United Irishmen and French forces

SURPISING USES FOR CUCUMBERS:
1 - They Can Reduce Cellulite
and Wrinkles - Take a couple
of thickish slices and
rub them along the
area you want to
treat for a few minutes.
This works because
cucumber contains a photochemical which
tightens collagen and firms up the outer layer
of your skin. This reduces the appearance
of visible cellulite. It can also be effective on
wrinkles, so use them as part of your regular
moisturising routine.
2 - They Can Make Your Stainless Steel Shine
Again - If you are looking for a ‘green’ way to
shine your stainless steel taps and pots, rub a
thick slice of cucumber over the area you want
to clean. It will remove any signs of tarnish and
leave the surface shiny and new. And as an
added bonus, it won’t harm your hands while
you are using it.
Email: [email protected]
3 - If you want a quick and easy facial you can
make at home, then slice up a generous amount
of cucumber pieces and boil them in a pot of
water. Remove the pot from the heat when it
has boiled, place a towel over your head and
lean over it, allowing the steam to hit your face.
The natural chemicals inside the cucumber
will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated,
while your skin will look great.
4 - They Can Polish Your Shoes - Rub a slice over
the shoes to leave them glistening, and as an
added bonus the cucumber provides them
with water repellent properties as well.
WHALES ARE DYING OFF THE COAST OF
ALASKA AND NO ONE KNOWS WHY:
Since May, 11
fin whales, 14
humpback
whales, one gray
whale and four
unidentified
cetaceans
have stranded
around the islands of the western Gulf of
Alaska and the southern shoreline of the Alaska
Peninsula. The uptick is nearly three times the
average for the area. Last year, there were only
five whale strandings for the entire year. There
were also six dead stranded whales reported
along British Columbia’s north coast in the
last few months, which is a significant increase
above annual seasonal numbers for that area.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) officially declared the
deaths an “unusual mortality event,” triggering
an investigation into the cause of the mass die
off.
CALIFORNIA IMPOSES STRICTER STANDARDS
ON SHOWERHEADS:
New rules approved by the state’s Energy
Commission last week will change the current
showerhead flow rates of 2.5 gallons per minute
to 2 gallons per minute by July 2016.
By July 2018, showerheads must meet a rate
of 1.8 gallons per minute, the nation’s strictest
standard for one of the biggest residential
indoor water uses.
When the new nozzles fully replace the current
models—the commission estimates that could
be realistically accomplished by 2028—as many
as 38 billion gallons of water, 20.2 billion cubic
feet of natural gas, and 1,322 gigawatt hours of
electricity could be saved each year.
FINALLY THIS WEEK: A little girl was talking
to her teacher about whales. The teacher said
it was physically impossible for a whale to

a very large mammal its throat was too small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed

it was physically impossible. The little girl said
“when I get to Heaven I will ask Jonah” The
teacher asked “what if Jonah went to hell?”. The
little girl replied “then you ask him”.

The CAO route isn’t always the best one for
people to continue in education. Some may
not be ready for higher education while others
may not have secured a CAO course offer or,
perhaps, are unhappy with the offer they
received. The PLC route provides an attractive
alternative to higher education and has
established a niche link between second level
and third level. Colleges of Further Education
have sprung up throughout the country to
offer PLC courses leading to awards at Level 5
(Certificate) and Level 6 (Advanced Certificate)
from Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI).
A PLC course is ideal for a person who has
completed the Leaving Cert and needs
further vocational education and training to
enhance her/his prospects of employment or
progression to other studies. A PLC course is
perfect for a mature student, who may not have
completed the senior cycle but is considered
to have the necessary competencies to benefit
from the programme. It’s also tailor made for a
student who has completed the Leaving Cert
Applied (LCA) or who didn’t achieve sufficient
points in the Leaving Cert for entry to a CAO
course
PLC courses are full time, mainly one year,
programmes of general skills education,
vocational training and work experience. The
courses are an end in themselves, leading
directly to employment in many cases.
Increasingly, they are used as an alternative
entry route to third level education. This year,
more than 16,000 applications to the CAO were
from students with a PLC qualification. This is a
very healthy development as it provides young
and not so young people, with an alternative
route into third level. Another attraction of
PLC courses is their availability nationwide at
nominal cost in Colleges of Further Education.
The PLC courses cover an extensive range
of options in areas such as Business and
Secretarial Skills, Computer Skills, Art, Craft and
Design, Multi-Media, Child and Community
Care, Sport and Leisure, Tourism and Catering,
Theatre and Drama.
Through the higher education links scheme
(HELS), the PLC courses provide an alternative
route into CAO courses. This year, over forty
higher education institutions including
universities, institutes of technology and
private colleges are offering a variety of
courses to PLC graduates. Entry is based on
a scoring system for PLC awards achieved at
Level 5 and Level 6 on the National Framework
of Qualifications (NFQ). Full details about
the scoring system are available on the QQI
website, www.qqi.ie. There isn’t a centralised
application system for PLC courses. Each PLC
college looks after its own application process.
Entry requirements normally consist of Leaving
Cert standard and satisfactory performance at
interview. Mature applications are assessed on

their lives’ experiences. PLC colleges usually
accept applications from early spring but they
will still accept applications for any courses that
have vacancies. Contact your local PLC course
provider or access all the relevant information
on www.qualifax.ie.PLC students may apply
to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) at
www.studentfinance.ie or www.susi.ie for a
means tested maintenance grant. All full time
PLC courses are free from tuition fees. PLC
students are required to pay registration fees
up to a maximum of €150. The Department
of Education and Skills also imposes a €200
levy on PLC students. Exemptions apply to
medical card holders and a number of other
categories.
Shocking statistics from Student Universal
Support Ireland (SUSI), the awarding authority
for college grant applications show an alarming
decrease in the number of applicants along
the western seaboard qualifying for grants. The
statistics provide an astonishing insight into the
punitive grant eligibility criteria employed by
SUSI on behalf of the Department of Education
and Skills (DES). In Kerry, for example, the
number of grant recipients was down 10%
in 2013/2014 compared to 2011/12, the year
before SUSI was launched.
The maximum standard non-adjacent (45km or
more from home) maintenance grant is now as
little as €3025 after a series of perennial savage
reductions. The standard maximum adjacent
(less than 45km from home) maintenance
grant payable is a paltry €1215. SUSI’s means
testing of grant applicants is now so restrictive
and inflexible that sixty out of every hundred
college students may be ineligible for any
financial aid in 2015/2016. In addition,
reducing the gross annual income levels for
grant eligibility to €39,875 has made a mockery
of the ever increasing cost of living. This year,
the student contribution is increasing to a
prohibitive €3000, which will force thousands
of young people to quit college or prevent
them from ever getting to college in the first
place. The Irish League of Credit Unions “2015
Third Level Education
Study,” published last
week, has established
that it requires at least
€12,000 per annum
to maintain a child
in college away from
home.
Education
Minister Jan O Sullivan
would do well to
assist the student
body and their cash
strapped
parents
by
immediately
implementing
the
following financial
reforms: - 1) abolish
the €3000 student contribution; 2) increase
the annual income level for grant eligibility
to €40,000, NET (not gross); 3) increase the
maximum standard non-adjacent (45km or
more from home) maintenance grant to €5000
and the maximum adjacent (less than 45km
from home) maintenance grant to €2000.
As the 2015 Leaving Cert cohort moves on,
schools reopen to prepare for the next cycle of
exams. In the next article, I’ll explain how good
planning and consistent work will lead to exam
success in 2016.

RATHMORE & DISTRICT
CREDIT UNION
In 2015, many families will see their child
or children off to college for the first time,
others will see their children return. For many
families, this can be an extremely stressful
time, as the cost of third level education
continues to spiral having a huge impact
on family budgets and household spending.
Rathmore & District Credit Union would like to
remind their members that the credit union is
here to help and have this week launched a new
Student/Education Loan at 5.1% APR* which
can help families in the Rathmore area cover
these costs. According to 2015 ILCU research
in the Republic of Ireland, 94% of parents are
supporting their children financially through
college. These parents are contributing an
average of €453 per child per month to cover
college related expenses. 72% of parents
supporting their children through 3rd level
education struggle to cover these costs. 44% of
students now live away from home compared
to 32% in 2013, paying an average of €346 in
rent. Parents are saving for an average of 8 years
to put their child (children) through college.
Lorcán McLoughlin (pictured), Marketing and
Development Officer from Rathmore & District
Credit Union said: “The significant cost of third
level education puts phenomenal pressure
on both parents and students starting or
returning to 3rd level education this year. The
student registration
fee combined with
monthly rent and
bills, books and
materials, food and
day to day expenses
are a significant
financial burden to
many families.”
Lorcán added: “We
are keenly aware of
the huge financial
burden which 3rd
level
education
places on students
and their families in
the Rathmore area.
Rathmore & District
Credit
Union
is
available to support
both parents and students as they prepare for
the academic year. We offer a very competitive
student and education loan rate of 5% We
encourage anyone who is looking to finance
their education or who simply want some
advice on planning ahead or budgeting to
call into Rathmore & District Credit Union and
speak to a member of staff. Planning ahead
where possible is the best way to prepare for
these expenses.”

Rising Motor Insurance Prices
by Conor Faughnan
For the Irish motorist the big issue of 2015 is rising
motor insurance prices. We are seeing a year-onyear increase of about 20% for ordinary drivers
with ordinary insurance risks. Anyone who has a
non-standard risk for any reason could face an even
bigger increase and may struggle to get a quote
as new business. Two of Ireland’s bigger insurers,
Axa and Allianz, announced recently that they are
not quoting new business for older cars which is a
symptom of a bigger problem (although there are
still options, including AA, for those with 15 year old
cars).
There are a few reasons why this is happening, some
valid and some frustrating. Firstly there is more
traffic out there. Last year AA Roadwatch warned of
32
27.08.15
the busiest traffic season in years and so it proved.
More traffic means more exposure and hence,
more collisions. More worryingly, though, the cost
of settling those claims is going up. Personal injury
awards are increasing and so are legal costs.
There is also an element of correction going on for
previous under-pricing. It is no consolation now, but
Irish motorists were collectively getting insurance at
a price that was below cost for a few years. That was
never sustainable.
Another big reason is fraud which we have estimated
adds about €40-€50 to the cost of every policy in the
country. While we have had fraud in good times and
bad it is particularly frustrating now as prices go up.
Conor Faughnan, Director of Consumer Affairs at AA Ireland
We can ill afford the increase in the cost of living and
we certainly can’t afford to pay good money in order
to pay for the cost of chancers and fraudsters.
The AA wants the government to take the whole area
of fraud much more seriously and we have a number
of proposals to tackle aspects of it. No doubt, there
will be much more on that in the coming months.

Lotto: This week our Lotto draw took place on Monday August 24th.
Results will be in next week’s notes. Next week’s Lotto draw will take place
this Sunday night August 30th in O’Dwyer’s Bar. Lotto tickets are available
from the usual outlets or any club officer.
Juvenile Academy: Training commenced last Friday after a month’s
break and the lads that turned up showed enthusiasm and zeal throughout
the hour long session. It was great to see that they practiced their skills
at home during the holidays as these were evident in the way they took
to the drills during training. We would like to welcome into the fold, Lisa
Rowan, daughter of former St. Pats star forward, PJ. We hope to see even
larger numbers next week.
U-14s: Our u14’s played against the Mitchel’s on Tuesday night in the final
of the central league but unfortunately it wasn’t our night. We started off
well with a point from Fergal O’Brien from a free after Tomas o’ Sullivan
was fouled. We held possession for a good period of time in the first half
but didn’t capitalize on it. Patrick Dowling hit the crossbar and Darragh
Moriarty kicked the ball short into the goalies hand. With great saves in
goals from Ian McCarthy and fantastic defending by Cathal Fitzgibbon a
well worked ball from Nathan Rowan allowed Danny Greaney the chance
to pop the ball over the bar. However things rapidly changed and Mitchels
took control of the game scoring 2 consecutive goals and a point. Our
backs Niall McCarthy, Damien Quirke, Ciaran O’Donoghue, Brian Teahan,
Martin Savage and Cathal Fitzbibbon were under constant pressure for
the remainder of this half while dealing with wave after wave of Mitchels
attacks but they never gave up. Our midfielders Ali Gardezi and Fergal
O’Brien fielded some great ball and passed it into our forwards Darragh
Moriarty, Tomas O’Sullivan, Patrick Dowling, Luke O Carroll, Nathan Rowan
and Danny Greaney. We saw 2 points from Fergal and one from Danny
but just before the half time whistle Damien Quirke who was powerful in
defence blocked the ball but it deflected allowing Mitchels to add another
goal to their score sheet. Half time score Mitchels 3-5 St. Pats 0-5. Changes
were made in the second half
seeing Samuel Abubaker,
Cormac Lynch, Gavin Doody,
James O’Sullivan and Tadgh
Kerins come into the game
but unfortunately Mitchels
were too good on the night.
Mitchels totally dominated
this half but our boys never
gave up and Ali, Patrick, Fergal
and Cathal added to our score
sheet to make the final score
Mitchels 7-9 St.Pats 1-10. A
big thank you to the mentors

his craft in ironwork. A very popular display
of vintage cars, tractors and agricultural

reminded all of the happy and simple life in rural
Ireland in times past. The Dog Show was again
one of the highlights of the afternoon. The
Falconer with his Birds of Prey was also a great
attraction. Each year one of the most popular
events on the programme is the instrumental
music and singing provided by a very talented
group of young musicians from the parish.
This year they performance was exceptional.
The attendance included many visitors from
outside the area who thoroughly enjoyed the
afternoon’s entertainment. The entertainment
in the Marquee was outstanding none more so
than the Currow Dancers who entertained all
present with a half set and a brush dance. Our
own Shane Kenny who was recently selected
as Rose Escort of the Year attended as did

Minister for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan
T.D. Sean Hurley of Kerry Radio also attended
and highlights of the day can be heard on his
County wide Programme on Sunday August
30th. The Spa-Fenit Community Council wish
to express their sincere thanks to all who
contributed to making the day an outstanding
success. They also acknowledge the generous
contributions of their sponsors without whose
support it would not be possible to run the
event. Finally they would like to thank all who
supported their draw and all who attended in
such large numbers. This is a source of great
encouragement and will be a motivating factor
in organising an even bigger and better event
next year.

CAMP ANNUAL SHEEP FAIR: Camp
Annual Sheep Fair falls on Friday, 18th
September. One of the biggest social
events in Camp every year, as always there
will be Sheep, Horses, Donkeys and fowl
for sale at the roadside in Camp Cross.
Camp fair is a tradition dating back to Lord
Ventry’s Ram Auction in the early 1900’s,
when he owned a hill farm in Beheenagh
which carried 1,000 ewes. The highlight
of the day for the sheepfarmers of West
Kerry is The Sheep Show, categories will
be published in next weeks notes ! We
would appreciate if winners last year
would please return perpetual trophies
and cups to Daly’s Bar in the next week.
Music in the pubs in the evening and
mutton pies a speciality to all local
fairs will be on offer all day. Don’t miss
Camp Fair, a great start to the All-Ireland
weekend ! Some sheep were adorned in
Kerry’s, green and gold one year at Camp
Fair !
OBITUARY: The news of the death of Eileen
Joyce (nee Flynn) Araglen, Castlegregory
on the ‘eve of Castle Pattern was received
with great sadness. Always at the pattern
all of her life, Eileen’s family and friends
missed her dearly on the day, a special
annual social event for the people of the
locality. A large congregation attended
the requiem Mass on Monday morning
celebrated by Fr. Michael Hussey and
assisted by Fr. Gene O Donnell and as the
cortege left St. Marys Church for Killiney
Graveyard where Eileen was laid to rest,
Castle and Camp Darts teams led by Gerry
Flynn formed a guard of honour as a mark
of respect to Eileen, who was a very skilled
team member ! Eileen is survived by her
husband Sean, sons Sean and Joe, sisters
Hannah and Kitty Mai, daughter-in-law
Claire, brother-in-law Padraig, nieces,
nephews, relatives and friends. Ar dheis

MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: The Kilmoyley/
Abbeydorney Minor combination exited the
Championship last Saturday evening in Lixnaw
against Lixnaw. Conditions were slippery as
there was heavy showers before the game. The
home team had a good start with a goal in the
first minute which put the pressure on our lads.
Half time score was Kilmoyley/ODorney 0-6 to
Lixnaw 2-06, but our team were working hard
and trying hard for a goal but it never came.
Lixnaw were first to open scoring in second
half and it was points exchanged between
both teams when David Egan hit the net for
our team, but at that stage it was too late to
catch up with the home team when they went
on to score a third goal. Final score Kilmoyley/
Abbeydorney 1-12, Lixnaw 3-16. PANEL – Sean

I’d like to let you know about the next round

early September. The course is called the
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course
(MBSR), running in both Killarney and Tralee. It’s
an 8 week course based on the work of Dr. Jon
Kabat- Zinn. The course is quite structured and
there are materials that come with it to support
the development of your practice. It does
require some commitment from participants
but people generally get into the swing of it
and find the support of the group invaluable.
There is a lot of variety in the programme and
a good mixture of practice and discussion and
input.†This†MBSR†course runs for 8 weeks and
includes a full day on a week end ( a total of 27
hours). Here’s the link to the web page where

KERRY SURVIVE STERN TEST TO QUALIFY FOR THE DECIDER
kerry 0-18 tyrone 1-11
by: KERRY O’SHEA
Kerry survived a stern test from
the men of Tyrone to qualify for
another All-Ireland final and make
it just their third win over the Red
Hands in Senior Championship
football. Those
who
were
expecting a dour defensive type
of game were in for a surprise as
both teams served up an exciting
game of football in very testing
conditions before an attendance
of 53,000 at GAA headquarters.
Tyrone’s record of having conceded
just two goals in the All-Ireland
Senior Football Championship this
year remains intact while at the
same time they held Kerry goalless.
Apart from their goal which was
from a penalty, they created a few
other goal-scoring opportunities
and must be considered unlucky
when one shot went whizzing just
above the crossbar. Two more goal
chances were prevented through
the excellence of goalkeeper
Brendan Kealy.
Both Colm Cooper and Kieran
Donaghy were very closely watched
throughout but nonetheless all
of the Kerry forwards scored; an
outcome which must have pleased
manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice.
Kerry showed great character
in coming back strongly after
Tyrone had scored a goal from a
penalty late into the game. This
was a big talking point among
fans afterwards as was the
contributions of Paul Geaney and
Barry John Keane when introduced
in the second-half.
Tyrone were more than a match
for Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s side and
for long periods of the game there
was little between the teams.
The Tyrone defence certainly
made things very difficult for the
Kingdom, given the fact that Kerry
were unable to create a decent
goal scoring opportunity all day.
But between the 64th minute
and the end of the game, Kerry
kicked for home and a run of four
points from Anthony Maher, Paul
Geaney (2), and Barry John Keane
effectively sealed victory for the
Kingdom.
Kerry suffered the loss of Marc
O’Se through a black card in the
16th minute of the first half and
survived this particular upset due
no doubt to the solid performance
of Fionn Fitzgerald who came
on in place of the An Ghaeltacht
veteran.
Darren McCurry opened the
scoring for Tyrone with two quick
fire points, but Kerry responded
with three from Johnny Buckley
to take the lead for the first time.
Ronan McNabb levelled for Tyrone
with a fine score but Kerry hit
back with a splendid score from
Stephen O’Brien.
Tyrone goalkeeper Niall Morgan
converted a great free in the 15th
minute after Connor McAliskey
was fouled. McAliskey landed a fine
score of his own in the 26th minute
but Kerry responded with two
points from James O’Donoghue
Donnnchadh walsh shoots for an important score against tyrone on sunday.

a kingdom in unity: kerry during the national anthem, before they do battle with tyrone.

leave the score a 0-7 to 0-5 in
favour of Kerry. Tyrone refused to
surrender and scores from Mark
Bradley and Mattie Donnelly had
the teams level coming up to
halftime, but Kieran Donaghy with
a great effort secured possession
and made no mistake to leave
Kerry with a 0-8 to 0-7 interval
advantage.
SECOND HALF
Mickey Harte’s side were back on
level terms within two minutes
of the resumption as Connor
McAliskey landed his second point
of the game.
Tyrone were hit a blow within
minutes of the resumption when
Colm Cooper made the most of
two poor Niall Morgan kick outs to
give Kerry the lead.
Paul Geaney, with his first point of
the afternoon in the 39th minute,
made the margin three, and at this
stage, it looked as if Kerry would
pull away.
Teams and Scorers
Kerry: Brendan Kealy; Paul Murphy;
Marc O’Se; Shane Enright; Jonathan
Lyne; Peter Crowley; Killian Young;
David Moran; Anthony Maher (0-1);
Stephen O’Brien (0-2), Johnny Buckley
(0-3), Donnchadh Walsh (0-1); Colm
Cooper (0-2), Kieran Donaghy (Capt)
(0-1), James O’Donoghue (0-4, 3f, 1,45).
Subs: Fionn Fitzgerald for O Se (bc, 16);
Paul Geaney (0-3, 0-1f ) for Donaghy
(HT); Bryan Sheehan for Moran (55);
Darran O’Sullivan for O’Brien (60);
Aidan O’Mahony for Crowley (62); Barry
John Keane (0-1) for Walsh (64).
But Tyrone stuck doggedly to their
task and Darren McCurry, who
had an otherwise quiet afternoon,
pointed.
Kerry hit three points in a row from
Donnchadh Walsh and James
O’Donoghue (0-2, both frees) to
take a 0-14 to 0-9 lead with 52
minutes gone.
Colm Cavanagh kept Tyrone in the
hunt with a well-worked point.
Then, all of a sudden, Tyrone were
handed a lifeline when a penalty
was awarded after Barry Tierney
was fouled inside the area.
Peter Harte coolly converted the
subsequent spot kick and then
Mark Bradley levelled for the Red
Hands with his second of the
game. It was anyone’s game once
more.
However, Kerry came up with the
right answers and a run of four
unanswered points eventually
earned them a place in another
All-Ireland final.
Tyrone: Niall Morgan (0-1); Aidan
McCrory; Ronan McNamee, Cathal
McCarron; Ronan McNabb (0-1), Justin

Johnny Buckley fires over his three

his first Man of the Match award

ball that he really impresses as
he hounds the Tyrone’s players in
possession and becomes a general
nuisances as he slows down the
counter attack.

Having survived a drowning on
the terrace of Fitzgerald Stadium,
Donal Barry was well prepared
for the downpour as he watched
the game unfold from Hill 16
hidden deep under the cover of
Red hand supporters.
Standing on the highest point
of the Hill just moments before
throw in the tension rises. Having
battled the elements while the
minor game came to an inevitable
conclusion with space a plenty and
a Kerry win, the “squeeze” comes
on as late supporters who have
survived the elements from both
sides push up along the empty
standing spaces scouting the best
vantage point. The early talk in
the terrace is of David Moran as
the rumour that he will not play
gathers pace as the team parade is
well scrutinised.
Moran parades and that talk is put
to bed as Maurice Deegan launches
the ball into the air for one of the
only times that all midfielders
will battle for a ball as both sides
favour the short kick out. It is
something that is bemoaned by
Kerry supporters while Tyrone
fans are happy to concede it is an
area they are second best to Kerry
but their inferiority complex ends
there as they have come to win
and the first 3 minutes of the game
for a Kerry fan are uncomfortable
as a swarm of white invade the
“Hillside”. A quick point, followed
by a brilliant block by Marc O’Se
and then a mis kick that leads
to a Tyrone wide. The pressure
is on but Kerry contain the early
burst and things settle a little as
James O’Donoghue and Kieran
Donaghy drift further away from
the attacking Hill end.
First talking point arrives with
Marc O’Se’s black card. Tyrone
fans are knowledgeable in these
things and are in no doubt, while
most Kerry’s fans worry that O’Se
will indeed end his involvement.
It take a few seconds and he is
gone. His replacement leads to
a quick debate as those with
money on Aidan O’Mahony learn
not to second guess the manager
as Fionn Fitzgerald arrives on the
scene. Kerry plug away into a lead
but Tyrone finish strong and with
time almost up its level. Star plucks
a ball from the skies and fires over
a point and we retreat into wet
huddles as the €10 ponchos are
still putting up a brave battle as wet
hands try to find a dry pocket with
the programme long surrendered
to the wet at this stage.
No need to consult the programme
for the second half as the Tralee
Star is replaced by the Western
Star Paul Geaney and his impact is
immediate. Kerry go on the offence
and now the pride begins to shine
as Kerry supporters – the little of
them that are on the hill begin to
find voice. As we prepare for the
fight back. There surely will be one
as we nervously look at the watch
as 56 minutes of the encounter
has elapsed. David Moran makes
way for Brian Sheehan. It is a tough
day for Moran who is by passed by
the style of the game as opposed
to any effort he has made. Kerry
lead 0-14 to 0-9 as O’Donoghue
fires over a free. Just as long as
we do not concede a goal, we are
out of here for sure. Shane Enright
loses another one of his nine lives
as Deegan flashes yellow and
not black. Most Kerry fans nod in
agreement with the Ulster folk.
Still we talk too soon. Minutes
later Tyrone get a penalty. From
the hill, the signal comes from the
ref and the roars of the old Canal
end. Once the real home of Kerry
fans. Harte makes no mistake and
a Bradley point has it level. It has
surely gone from us now as Tyrone
fans become a willing 16th man
for their hero’s. The whitewashed
sheet with “No one likes us” gets a
showing but it is quickly used for
shelter again. A Maher point and
a McCann miss gives us back our
hope, Geaney fires over another
smart effort before the Gooch
is nearly sent into the hill with a
tackle that shakes ever core in the
body. It is not until later viewing
that we see how bad the tackle is.
Geaney pops the free and we are
able to believe again, before we
know it we are into two minutes
of stoppage time. Tyrone need a
goal. Morgan free is a poor effort
flies well wide. It’s time for Tyrone
to surrender and like a blot from
the blue Barry John Keane kicks
a point to put Kerry four points
ahead and its where we would
stay as the journey back to the
car begins but that’s a story for
another day.

Electric Ireland Minor Football Semi-Final
Foley the Star man as minors dispatch Derry
Kerry 1-11 Derry 1-06
Captain Conor Geaney may have
been the star for Kerry coming into
this year’s All-Ireland semi-final
but fellow corner-forward Michael
Foley hit 1-3 for the reigning minor
champions in their five-point win
over Derry.
The Spa clubman got the vital
goal in the second half for Jack
O’Connor’s men as they fought
back after Conor Maunsell slotted
a freak goal for Derry.
Goalkeeper Billy Courtney was left
red-faced as the ball looped over
his head and Derry were level after
33 minutes.

But it was a well-deserved win for
Kerry who were the better side at
Croke Park and will go on to defend
the title they won for the first time
in 20 years last term against either
Tipperary or Kildare on September

20.
Geaney, who is a cousin of seniors
Paul and Michael, was still a
major asset and has now hit 2-23
in just five games in this year’s
championship – he slotted 0-05
today.
Meanwhile Derry’s wait goes on; it
is 13 years since they last claimed
an All-Ireland minor crown.
They trailed 0-06 to 0-03 at halftime and couldn’t reduce the deficit
after the break with substitute Niall
McAtamney’s late goal disallowed.
Both sides struggled to deal with
the greasy conditions but initially
it looked as though Kerry would
run away with it.
They took a 0-05 to 0-01 lead inside
13 minutes but Derry packed out
their defence and fought their way
back.
Geaney kicked Kerry into the
lead in the second minute when
he won a free and tapped it over
from 45 yards out. Michael Foley
hit a quick-fire second as the Kerry
forwards looked too hot to handle
and Andrew Barry slotted a third
after a patient build-up.
Derry flooded back in numbers
and AFL potential recruit Conor
Glass was used as an extra-man in
defence, as was Tiarnan Flanagan.
Flanagan was one of three changes
from the spirited win over Longford
three weeks ago while another one
of those, Francis Kearney helped
Derry find a way back.
First Sean McGuigan got his name
amongst the scorers with a curled
effort from his left boot but Kerry
extended their lead through
Geaney, again from a free, and a
John Mark Foley point in the 13th
minute.
That gave the Kingdom a 0-05
to 0-01 lead but when Geaney
failed to convert a possible goal
opportunity Derry grew into the
game.
Glass was deployed more around
the middle and they used the
route one option to find Kearney
in at full-forward.
Kearney pointed their second
after 21 minutes and McGuigan
doubled his tally for the day with
a free.
Kerry had not scored in 14 minutes
until John Mark Foley potted a
monster effort from distance and
that gave them a 0-06 to 0-03 lead
the break.
Derry made the ideal start to the
second-half when Maunsell had
the ball in the Kerry net after three
minutes.
It was just a speculative effort from
the Derry corner-back but it left
the scores at 0-06 to 1-03. Geaney
replied with a free and his first
from play but a massive score from
Kearney kept Derry in touch.
However Derry only had two more
scores for the remainder of the
game while Kerry’s experience as
All-Ireland champions showed.
Mark O’Connor, who was part
of last year’s winning side, was
introduced off the bench and
when Foley slotted their goal in
the 38th minute they pushed on
for victory.

TG4 All Ireland LGFA Semi-Final
Ladies looking to create their own history
29th August 2015
Kerry v Cork. 6pm
At the Gaelic Grounds Limerick
Referee: Colm McManus
Kerry face a familiar foe on Saturday evening
in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick as for the
second time in three years Cork pose the road
block between them and an All Ireland final.
Kerry come into the game as reigning Munster
champions having already defeated Cork in a
manner and style that suggests they will the
confidence to do so again but few thing pan
out that way as they have learned to their
disappointment in the past so will the losses in
the past have a bearing
Manager Alan O’Neill feels not “I don’t think
so. Both teams have a good few changes from
then and on Saturday; I think neither side will
be using that as a crutch. A lot of water has
flown under that bridge”.
O’Neill is a firm believer that hard work reaps it
rewards and has seen the work increase across
the year.
“We have worked incredibly hard. The tempo
at training has been of a very high quality and
even though I have said it in the past, I think the

strength in depth of the current squad is good.
We have nearly another generation of players
all fighting hard for a place and they really push
the more established players. At times nearly
more than a competitive game. It really is the
basis for our good form”
Still the confidence in the camp is tempered
with the opposition who arguably have been a
massive obstacle for Kerry in recent years.
“Cork are All Ireland champions and great
champions and role models for the sport as a
whole. Last year they won RTE sports team of
the year, they are the team we aspire to be,
I think getting to their level, and being able
to compete speaks volumes for our girls and
their efforts. Which go largely unrecognised at
times”
Kerry v Cork is live on TG4 at 6pm on Saturday
evening .
Garvey’s County Senior Hurling Championship
Lixnaw v St Brendans
Saturday August 29 In Abbeydorney at 6pm
Ref: Cathal McCallister (Cork)
Last year’s winners and the winners from 2013 will provide all the
action needed to provide a classic in Abbeydorney on Saturday
evening. Lixnaw have arrived to the semi-final without too much
trouble having dispatched Ballyheigue and Causeway while St.
Brendan’s form has been unpredictable. A loss to Abbeydorney,
followed up by a win over Ballyheigue and Causeway have them
at this juncture. Expect John Egan and Mike Conway to lead the
attack for both sides.
THE ST BRENDANS TEAM
Kilmoyley v Ballyduff
Sunday, August 30In Abbeydorney at 6pm
Ref: Jason Mullins (Limerick)
It is Groundhog Day for the hurlers of Kilmoyley and Ballyduff
as they meet each other at the same stage of the competition
that they did last season. Kilmoyley emerged winners on that
occasion. Ballyduff have had plenty of highs and lows along
the way. An opening defeat to Causeway was followed up
with an extra time win over Crotta before they survived a scare
from Abbeydorney with the concession of 3 goals. Meanwhile
Kilmoyley have had their own excitement in getting to this stage
as they too encountered Crotta and needed a replay and extra
time to defeat them in a game while they cruised to the semifinal with a win over Abbeydorney. Having won 46 titles between
them pride will certainly be a factor on Sunday.

Austin Stacks
(By Martin Collins)
STRICTLY COME DANCING: Read News desk
for full details.
SENIOR FOOTBALL: We are due to travel to
Foilmore on this Saturday evening (29th Aug)
to play the local side in round 9 of the Co.
League. Throw in at 6pm.
WELL DONE: to the Kerry Minors and Seniors
(including our own Jack Morgan, Ferdia O’Brien
and Kieran Donaghy) on their semi final wins
in a very wet Croke Park last Sunday. It means
that, for the second year in a row, both teams
advance to their respective finals. Only twice
before did this happen – both teams advancing
to successive finals at the same time – the first
away back in 1931 and 1932 and the last time
in 1979 and 1980. And on those two occasions
the Kerry Seniors went on to do the four-in-arow (1929-1932 and 1978-1981).
JUNIOR B FOOTBALL: Our B team are due to
travel to Rathmore on this Friday (28th Aug) to
play the local side in round 1 (quarter final) of
the Co. Championship (The Molyneaux Cup).
Throw in at 6.45pm with extra time if required.
However, as we write, there is a possibility that
the fixture may be changed.
Then on Monday evening (31st Aug) we are
due to play St. Pats in the 5th and final round
of the Town League. The game in Blennerville
starts at 7.30pm.
U21 FOOTBALL: Spa 3-10; Austin Stacks 1-13.
We travelled to Spa (Killarney) last Tuesday
week (18th Aug) for the opening round of the
U21 Club Championship (Cup Section) but two
late goals by the home side saw them advance
to the next round while we, together with the
other seven first round losers, must be content
to compete at the quarter final stage of the
Shield competition. These quarter finals are
now in doubt ,however, as there were five walkovers out of the eight first round games in the
Cup last week.
MINOR FOOTBALL: In the Central League we
have two more rounds to play – a round 4 game
at home to Laune Rangers and the 5th and final
round away to Milltown. No new dates have
been fixed for either game as we write.
CONGRATULATIONS: to six super Rockies
who were in celebratory mode of late – Mike
Carmody from Connolly Park turned 80 recently
and two former Club footballers -Tim Tiger
Slattery and his wife Anne (nee Naughton)
celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary.
And then, last week, another former Club
footballer, Kristian Donovan went and swan
the English Channel, landing on the French
side close to midnight last Monday week (17th
Aug) – seemingly the 51st Irishman and only
the second Kerryman to do so. Current Club
footballer, Nicholas Gogarty, was one of the
Rose Escorts during this year’s Festival. And
then to crown it all on Friday last (21st Aug)
Marina Barry was deservedly named as one of
the ten greatest Women GAA Players of all time.
Marina, of course, is the winner of 10 All Ireland
SF medals with Kerry. Congratulations to all six

Girls Academy: well done to all our little
Rockettes who performed so well in our U10 &
U8 challenge game last Thursday night V Kerins
O’Rahillys. Great nights football had by all and
many thanks to KOR for the invite. We did not
train last Sunday morning due to the Kerry game
but football returns this Sunday at 11am to
Connolly Park (note change of venue) when we
will welcome Ballymacelligott’s U10 & U8 girls. U6
football will also take place in Connolly park this
Sunday.
U12 Girls - Training has recommenced for
this age group - every Thursday at 4.45pm in
Connolly Park and at 11am on Sunday mornings
in Caherslee.
U14 Girls - will kick off their North Kerry League
this Sunday with an away game V Abbeydorney
at 12 noon.
Senior Ladies - Mary Jo Curran Cup - we will
play Finuge St. Senans in Connolly Park at 7pm
this Wednesday evening (Aug 26th).
Best wishes to our own Laura Rogers and
her Kerry team mates who will take on Cork this
weekend in the All Ireland Semi Final.
Big thanks to all who organised, participated
and supported Austin Stacks Strictly Come
Dancing 2015 - what a fantastic night in the dome
we were treated to.
U14 FOOTBALL: U14 Central League Final: we
retained our Central League Div 1 title after a
hard fought win over Laune Rangers in Currow
last Monday. After fifteen minutes of end to end
action the sides were level 5 points apiece with
our scores coming from Conor Myers 3, and 1 each
from Joe Bastible and Padraic Linnane. A much
improved second quarter started with a long
range free from Sean Quilter, a left legged point
from Myers before three goal chances in three
minutes with Joe Bastible firing into the bottom
corner. Conor was again unlucky when he flicked
the ball onto the crossbar and Jordan Barry took
the paint off the post with a cross goal shot but
Padraic Linnane found the net after a fabulous run
through the Rangers defence. Two more Myers
points had us ahead 2-10 to 1-7 at the break.
Rangers then threw everything at us but when
David Oba was ‘Black Carded’ after Gearoid
Hassett had rounded him in the second minute
of the half things looked ominous. Jordan Barry
took the No.1 jersey and on came Liam Nolan. A
purple patch from Killorglin with 4 in 5 minutes
had us on the ropes but a Liam Nolan goal gave
us a much needed lift and with Dara Barry Walsh,
Captain Eoghan Carroll and Padraic Linnane
superb in defence we pushed on. Craig Teahan
and Luke Chester had by now steadied the back
line and in the final quarter we outscored Rangers
2-4 to 3pts with Joe Bastible and Conor Myers
both finding the net and Nolan and Quilter both
pointing twice. In midfield both Leon Shalemba
and Sean Quilter did well with Daniel O Rourke
as always taking on the whole halfback line and
taking some heavy knocks in the process. Cian
Purcell and James Fernane supplied some lovely
passes and worked hard. Adam Curran was his
usual tenacious self mopping up any loose ball.
This was p robably the best performance of the
year in a year of so much success but Laune
Rangers are a top side at this age and1 we will
have plenty more finals against them in the
years to come, hopefully! Captain Eoghan Carroll
received the Division 1 trophy and as quiet as he
is he still managed a fine speech !! Leon Shalemba
was awarded the Man of the Match after a lung
bursting performance. Thanks again to the Central
league committee and Damien McCarthy for all
the calls and texts. Final Score Austin Stacks 5-15
Laune Rangers 2-14.
Next up is the Town Championship over the next
three Wednesdays when we are away to Churchill,
home to Strand Rd and away to Na Gaeil.
U6 U8 AND U10 FOOTBALL: The U10 group had
an enjoyable and eventful trip to play in Kildare
last Saturday. Well done to all and especially the
mentors who looked after the gang.
Action for these three age groups continues at
5.35PM on Thursday in Connolly Pk and at 11AM
on Sunday in Cahersiveen.
The Rock U9s are also gearing up for a big

Junior League Group 1 Final Strand
Road 1-07 Rathmore 1-09. This game was
played in Legions grounds in Killarney on Friday
evening last. Strand Roads first score came after
4 minutes and was a well taken point by Mark
Boysie O’Sullivan. Strand Roads discipline was
relaxed and they gave away some frees which
Rathmore capitalised on. Seánie Walsh scored a
fine goal on the 14th minute and it was looking
good for Strand Road but Rathmore quickly
came back with one of their own and despite
points from Declan Quill and Boysie we went
in at half time trailing by 4 points. Strand Road

going against us. An audible gasp was heard

Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Minor Football
Championship Quarter Finals
The cream of the county’s Minor Footballers will
be on view on this Wednesday evening when
the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Minor Football
Championship Quarter Finals are down for
decision with a 6:30pm throw-in time as follows:
Dingle, who can call on the likes of county player
Conor Geaney, put their county title on the line
when they take on East Kerry in Fossa, Spa with
Mano of the Match from Sunday’s encounter,
Michael Foley in their ranks, have home venue
against Shannon Rangers, another East Kerry
outfit, Dr Crokes play Kenmare District in Lewis
Road and the J.P. O’Sullivan Park in Killorglin is
the venue for the meeting of two District Board
sides, Mid Kerry and St Brendans.
Extra time will be played in the event of a draw.
Credit Union Senior Football League
With just two rounds of the Credit Union
Football League to go, competition for the
promotion and relegation places is hotting up
and a number of back games in all Divisions
over the next couple of weeks will have a major
influence on the League Tables before those
final two Rounds.
In Division 1 this weekend, Kerins O’Rahillys are
home to Waterville and St Michaels Foilmore
are home to Austin Stacks and these are two
vital games for the South Kerry sides who
are battling for survival at the bottom of the
Division.
In Division 2 last weekend, Templenoe, despite
conceding five goals, defeated Tarbert by
1-18 to 5-2 and go top of the table as a result
leapfrogging Rathmore, John Mitchels and
Spa who are a point adrift on 13 points. Spa
made their push for promotion last weekend
when they defeated Glenflesk by 4-15 to 2-16
in a high scoring game. With two games left,
and just two points on the board, Tarbert look
certain to drop to Division 3 next season.
In Division 3 this evening, Listry defeated
struggling Beale by 1-11 to 0-9 a result that
could see Listry, who have another game in
hand this weekend against Ballymacelligott,
pushing for a promotion place. Beale on the
other hand stay on 4 points at the foot of the
table though they do have a game in hand
against Ardfert to come. This weekend also sees
third placed St Pats play An Ghaeltacht.
In Division 4, the big game last weekend was the
meeting of table toppers Ballydonoghue and
fellow promotion hopefuls St Senans and that
game ended in a high scoring draw, 0-17 each.
Dromid Pearses also defeated Cromane by 2-11
to 1-12. Those results mean that Ballydonoghue
stay top on 14 points, followed by Scartaglen
on 11 and Dromid and St Senans in joint third
on 10 points, however, St Senans do have a
back game this weekend away to Cromane. The
Mid Kerry side, who are on five points in the
drop zone, will need to pick up points from that
game if they are to avoid the drop.
Castlegregory also play Dr Crokes this
weekend.
In Division 5 the game between Moyvane and
Tuosist last weekend was conceded by Tuosist
and that puts Moyvane into third place in the
table on 12 points behind Renard (14) and
Valentia (13). This weekend Asdee play Duagh
and Knocknagoshel play Valentia.
Round 10 of the League is fixed for the weekend
of September 27th.
Novice Football Shield Quarter Finals
The Novice Football Shield Quarter Finals have
been fixed by the CCC as follows:
On Sunday 30th August, Clounmacon play
Beale, on Sunday 6th September, Fossa play
Valentia and on September 13th Sneem/
Derrynane play Cromane. First named teams
have home venue with throw-in for all games
at 2pm. Moyvane are already through to the
semi finals.
Under 21 Club Football Championship
The U21 Club Football Championship got off to
a rather inauspicious start during the past week
with just three games played out of the eight
scheduled; Spa beat Austin Stacks, Dr Crokes
defeated Emmets and Desmonds defeated
Glenflesk. So Laune Rangers, Dr Crokes,
Moyvane/Tarbert, Legion, Lispole/Castle/
Annascaul, Desmonds, Spa and Knock/Brosna
go forward to Round 2 with the four winners of
Round 2 qualifying for the quarter finals against
Group “A” opponents – these were deemed to
be the stronger teams - namely John Mitchels,
Kerins O’Rahillys, An Ghaeltacht and Dingle.
The Draw and fixtures were due to be made at
Tuesday evening’s CCC meeting. Extra time will
apply where necessary in all games.

The August meeting of the County Committee
will take place in Austin Stack Park on Monday

(By Mike Roger O’Sullivan)
Parnells Club Day: Parnells will host a
number of Blitzes on Saturday the 12th of
September in John Mitchels Gaa grounds. Under
6 and 8’s will host local teams, 10am to 11am.
Under 10 North Kerry Blitz, 10am to 12noon.
Under 10 & 12 Camogie Blitz 12noon to 2pm.
Under 16 eleven a side Invitational blitz, 11.30
to 2pm. We need all players available on the day
and parents to please come out and support the
children. More Details to follow soon.
Under 8s Blitz: Parnells were delighted to
send 2 teams of 9-a-side to the under 8 blitz
in Abbeydorney on Saturday. The was a great
chance for our players to get experience and all
of the boys and girls got ample game time over
the course of 3 games for each team. This was
a major blitz, with 2 teams from Abbeydorney
as well as other visiting teams from Crotta,
Ballyheigue, Kilmoyley, St. Brendan’s Ardfert,
Lixnaw. Across our 2 teams, we played 6, won
3 drew 2, lost one. So overall a great day out.
Our thanks to the organisers for this excellent
opportunity.
Under 12/10 Camogie League: A busy
Saturday morning in Caherslee for our girls, as
we faced off against all 3 of the other members of
the Kerry Camogie league, in matches between
10am and 12:30 pm. We had a great turnout of
14 players and Causeway who brought a large
travelling panel, gave us a chance to field 12
girls in the opener. This game time is invaluable
and the mentors could see the development
and continuing improvement in the girls due to
the recent Croke Park blitz and the very useful
game last week in Causeway. We faced a stiff
challenge again in our second game against
KillArd, but the home players were undaunted
and went through in the opening minutes to
score the first goal. By the time the final game
against Killarney came around, there were a
lot of tired legs, but showing great character,
our girls had saved their best for last. In a
thrilling encounter there was never more than
a goal between the teams and Parnells showed
great spirit and ability in scoring 5 well earned
goals, to finish just one score behind at the
final whistle. If this panel keep improving at
this rate, they have a very bright future and
the parents and mentors gave them very well
earned praise for their efforts throughout the
3 games. Lining out for Parnells on the day we
had Caoimhe Donnelly, Anna Kerdzaia, Clodagh
O Sullivan, Shona O’Connor, Roise O’Donnell,
Rachel Sergeant, Aoife O’Sullivan, Ailisha
Daughton, Danielle Griffin, Caoimhe Lyons,
Emma McCluskey, Labhaoise Mansfield, Jessica
O’Loughlin, Saoirse Maloney.
Under 14 boys County League:
Our under 14 boys face St. Brendan’s Ardfert in
Caherslee this Tuesday.

Round 7 of The World Series ...... Round
7 and the penultimate round of Our World Series
of Swims took place last Wednesday evening in
brisk conditions. A southerly wind and an out
going tide made for a choppy swim. A new
course was taken courtesy of the wind having
blown the buoys out of place. 52 swimmers
took to the water accompanied by 14 Kayakers.
All the swimmers were conscious that time was
running out to gain points and it made for a
very competitive swim. However there were
some swimmers tired from an 8km swim in
Caragh Lake the day before and others were
saving themselves for The Killarney Hardman.
In any case there were some exceptional swims
with Michael OConnell Jnr winning Grp A and
setting the fastest time. Group B was won by
John Gilmartin and Group C was won by John
Quilter. All prizes were very kindly sponsored
by Fitzgibbon Interiors.
Swimmer of the Year: Michael OConnell
Jnr and Siobhain Griffin are now tied at the top
of the table with 19 points but closely followed
by Donal Fitzgibbons, Maura Hayes and Niamh
Murphy. Any one of these five swimmers can
now win The Swimmer of The Year for 2015 and
it should make for a very competitive final race .
There are 1st , 2nd and 3rd places in each group
up for grabs so it is still all to play for ! Michael
OConnell Jnr leads Grp A , Siobhain Griffin leads
Grp B and Catriona Kelly leads Group C after a
great season of swimming.
Donation: The club would like to sincerely
thank Martin Moore for his very kind donation
of a kayak to the club .
English Channel: Congratulations to Tralee
man and Club member Kristian ODonovan who
swam The English Channel earlier this week . A
great feat . Kristian is now the the second Club
member to have completed the swim. Rosie
Foley being the first. Kristian is also the first
Tralee person to have completed it.
RIP: The Club would like to express their
sincere condolences to the family and friends
of Edmond Moriarty who passed away recently.
Edmond used to be a regular fixture & character
at Lockes Beach in the summer evenings. Rest
in Peace.
The Gerald Walsh Memorial Swim: The
final swim of the season takes place on Sun 13th
of Sept where all positions will be decided . It
will be followed by the traditional BBQ.
Blennerville to Fenit Swim: This has now
been pencilled in For Sat the 5th September.
And finally: Our Annual Prizegiving and
Social takes place on Saturday 26th September
in The Meadowlands Hotel. A full sit down meal,
Prizegiving, a live band and dancing into the
night ! Please support this great night out and
all swimmers and friends are invited from the
masters and tri club as well. Tickets available
from ant committee member for €35.

Agony for Kerry Juniors:
All Ireland Junior A Championship Final
Carlow 0.14 Kerry 0.3. Carlow had too much
artillery for Kerry as they bounced back from
last year’s final defeat to garner the Liberty
Insurance All-Ireland junior A title. Limerick
broke their hearts last year but on this occasion
Mark Brennan’s side made no mistake, as they
always held the upper hand. Brennan, who
captained Carlow hurlers to a Christy Ring Cup
final success, has worked the oracle with the
county camogie team this year and their fitness
was very much in evidence in the second half.
This was a meeting between Kerry a Division 3
team and a Divisions 4 league champions and as
expected, it was the team operating at a higher
level that came out on top. Kerry more than
held their own in the first half though and while
their three points came from Sara Murphy frees,
they would have been in a stronger position but
for the excellent defensive work of Aine Ryan,
Grainne Nolan and Kate Nolan. Carlow led by
0-5 to 0-3 at the interval but were on the back
foot immediately from the throw-in. Crucially
though, Niamh Doyle made an important save
and from juncture, Carlow held the upper
hand. Eleanor Treacy, Michelle Nolan and Ciara

Massive Day for Moda:
The
Kerry
Cycling
Clubs
County
Championships, expertly hosted by the
Sliabh Luachra CC, saw the riders tackle
various numbers of laps of the 6.8km circuit
based in Gneeveguilla village. It all built up
to the seniors race over 9 laps which saw all
those present witness a superb display of
solo riding by Moda Kingdom Endurance’s
Denis Dunworth. Using all his time trialling
experience he jumped clear in the second lap
and took the chequered flag with 55 seconds
to spare to take the Michael Blackwell Cup.
It was a great day for the Moda team as the
filled the top three places with John Brosnan
and Eddie Barry following Dunworth home.
This also gave Moda Kingdom Endurance
the overall team prize and the Breen Family
Trophy. To make it even better Moda’s George
Doyle continued his great form that saw him
medal on the national stage last week. He
was the first A2 rider home and doubled
that as also taking the Over 40’s County
Championship title. In the A2’s iBike’s Ronan
O’Shea was second and the unattached John
Blackwell third who was also 2nd in the over
40’s followed home by Gerry McCarthy (Tralee
Manor West). The top 3 in the A3’s were Ciaran
Slattery iBike, Pierce Boland of Tralee Manor
West and Killarney CC’s Keith Lyne.
Tralee Manor West’s Oran Pierce beat his clubmate Killian Tierney to the Junior title while
Laura Jane Nelson was crowned the Ladies
Champion.
The over 50’s was won by Tom Daly, O’Leary
Stone Kanturk with Colin Lacey, Chain Gang,
second and iBike’s Tom Barrett third.
The underage results saw Killarney’s Patrick
Galvin win at u12’s ahead of Kanturk’s Ronan
Leahy and Kieran Commane from Kingdom.
In the u14’s Kanturk CC took the top two spots
with Tom Moriarty and Tom O’Connor with
Kieran Coggins third.
Cian Smailes of Tralee Manor West was the
top u16. Patrick White of iBike was second and
Thomas Dore of Kanturk third.

The story of a
Professional
Athlete
2015 World Rowing
Championships
We are only a step away from competing at
the 2015 World Rowing Championships in
Aiguebelette in France. Not only that but
also a stroke away from securing Olympic
qualification places. It is important to point
out that in rowing it is not the rower but the
boat that qualifies. This means that people
competing in Rio may be different from
those who qualified the boats day one. This
ensures that the boats are filled with the best
athletes. As a result it creates a competitive
and challenging environment which
promotes growth and self-improvement.
After the entries for the championships
closed, FISA, the World Rowing Federation
announced that a record of 1,300 athletes
from 77 countries will be lining up to race at
this year’s most prestigious rowing event. In
total there will be 129 places available for Rio
Olympic Games and 24 places for Paralympics
Games. Competition goes from 30th of
August to 6th of September with racing
spread across 27 boat classes comprising
of 14 Olympic, eight International and five
Para-rowing boat classes.
I’m racing in the international category in
the Women’s Four event. We will compete
against crews from USA, China, Germany and
Great Britain. Currently, we are coached by
Sean Casey, who competed and medaled in
the Men’s Four event at several international
competitions and raced at the 2008 Olympic
Games in Beijing. The Killarney man is
looking after us since the establishment of
the crew and we made a great progress since.
It is very beneficial especially for aspiring
Olympians to have someone with his rowing
experience coaching us. It is not only the
technical aspect of sweep rowing that
matters but sometimes the simplest advice
can make a difference of getting through a
Rep or a Semi-Final, especially if someone
has experienced the challenges associated
with racing themselves.
I’m departing for France on Wednesday, the
26th of August from Dublin and I’m racing
on Wednesday, the 2nd of September at 9am
(Irish time) with the final being scheduled for
Friday, the 4th at 10:50am (Irish time). Keep
your fingers crossed!

with Gold medals.
Our gymnastics also did well bringing home a

Ted Creedon hands over the Agritime reigns to Aisling O Brien
Radio Kerry journalist
Aisling O Brien has
been announced as
the new presenter
of
the
station’s
dedicated
farming
programme Agritime,
which is broadcast
every Thursday 7 to
8pm. She takes over
from Ted Creedon
who retires from the
Aisling O Brien
radio at the end of
August after 20 years
as the presenter and producer of Agritime. Tralee
native Aisling joined the Radio Kerry news team in
2008. Over the past seven years she has become a
familiar voice on the station, winning a Justice in
Media award in 2010 and the PPI National Radio
Award for Best News Story in 2011. She also has a
wealth of programme experience on shows such
as Talkabout and In Business. Her first Agritime
show will be broadcast on Thursday, September
3rd.
Agritime is Radio Kerry’s award-winning farming
programme which covers important issues
affecting the sector in Kerry. Representatives of
farming bodies, at both local and national level,
industry related specialists and government
agencies all contribute to the show which also
features detailed up-to-date
reports on livestock, prices from
marts and factories and a weekly
advisory segment. The show has
been sponsored by Kerry Group
since it first went on air.
Radio Kerry General Manager, Fiona Stack,
thanked Ted Creedon for all the years of work
on Agritime and a variety of other Radio Kerry
programmes. She said, “he leaves hard shoes
to fill, and we wish him health and happiness in
his retirement”. Speaking about Aisling’s new
appointment she added, “we know that Aisling is
going to do great in attempting to fill those shoes
and take on a new challenge”.Anyone wishing
to contact Aisling in relation to the Agritime can

IFA PRESIDENT BACKS FBD
The IFA President Eddie Downey
said FBD Holdings remains a very
solid business and as the only Irishowned insurance company is very
important to Irish farmers and its
customers. He said he backed FBD’s
focus on strengthening its insurance
service to farmers, small and medium
businesses and consumers and in
so doing restoring the business to
profit for its loyal shareholders and
customers. Mr. Downey said that
farmers, shareholders and customers
are rightly very disappointed that
FBD has found itself in such difficulty
as a result of market conditions, new
solvency rules and the business
strategy pursued in the past. FBD has
served famers and loyal customers
well over the years. As a board
60
27.08.15
member, I am confident that the
measures the company are putting
in place will both strengthen its
finances and restore profitability.
Mr. Downey said that farmers can
have confidence in FBD’s ability
to meet claims and to continue to
provide competitive premium rates
going forward. He said, as a result of
inflationary claims pressure that the
Government has to intervene and
review the level of costs and awards
in the insurance sector to ensure that
insurance remains affordable for all
our citizens. It is also clear that the
necessary changes must be made at
all levels of FBD to restore confidence
and get the business back to
profitability as soon as possible,
Eddie Downey concluded.

Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine.
