What a
difference
a month
makes!
Our last
issue
speaks of
just hints
of winter—at
publication, we
got that
White Christmas so many residents wished for! And, so the
gloominess of late fall and the cold, dark rains have succumbed to mountains of brightness, with all the sunshine of
an August afternoon reflecting off the snow. All around town,
we see young and old ready to go out and have some old –
fashioned winter fun. Sleds, snowmobiles and snowmen are
popping up everywhere! Soon, if the cold weather holds up,
ice shanties will pepper the lake and the sound of quiet
laughter will drift back to the shoreline, letting us know all is
well out there.
January 2013
This winter promises to be one of new beginnings, here in
Chaumont—with the re-opening of a renovated restaurant,
The Crescent. We’ll be running a story (in February’s Lyme
Light) about the history of the old Crescent Hotel and what
this new group plans to do to add to the fun on the lake, all
year round.
FROM THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE
Attention Farmers! The deadline is March 1st to get your
application into our office for an Agricultural Land Assessment. The re-eval will take effect with the 2013 tax roll and
agricultural land values are increasing. It will save you tax
dollars to apply for the exemption. You can get the application from our office. You will need to submit a new soil breakdown sheet available from ASCS. If you are in an Agricultural District, you automatically qualify for the exemption. If
you are not in an Agricultural District, you have to show proof
of $10,000 worth of income from a farming operation (or rent
your land to someone who does income qualify for the exemption.) You must also commit your land for an 8-year period, with penalties if the land use changes to non-agricultural
within that 8 year commitment. The parcel must be at least 7
acres. For more information, call our office at 649-2387.
If you enjoy being all warm and cozy in the winter, but want to The deadline for all exemptions is March 1st.

Happy New Year from the Lyme
Town Council, its employees
and your elected officials. 2012
was a very busy year with many
accomplishments. They include
the updating and revision of
many of our town policies by the
town council; many of the policies were written years ago and
did not pertain to the present
times. This took several work
sessions and much time and
commitment by the entire
board. Other accomplishments
were: the building of a new salt
storage barn by the highway
department, the writing of an
industrial wind law by the Planning Board and Zoning Enforcement Officer, and its adoption by
the town council. The Planning
Board and ZEO were also directed to write zoning ordinances for personal wind tur-
bines, solar and biomass systems and they have submitted
them to the town council for
review, revision and ratification.
The town clerk and deputy
clerk have been busy updating
records for dog licenses and
have accounted for many of the
dogs in the town. If you have
not registered your dog, or no
longer have one, please notify
the town office. The processing
of dog licenses is a new addition
to the job of the town clerk. This
was previously performed by the
County and has been passed
down to towns. It is one issue
we will be watching closely. The
town clerks, in all towns, are
now doing all the work, yet the
County still sees some revenue
from it.
The Assessors are continuing
the work on the revaluation process. Four temporary members
to the Board of Assessment
Review (BAR), and two secretaries, will be needed to assist in
the grievance process which is
expected to last about
a month. The four BAR members will be appointed for one
year and will be paid accordingly. If you are interested
in either of these paid positions,
please call the town office.
Recycling at the transfer site is
going well and we thank you. In
case you didn't know, the town is
paid for the recyclables it takes
in, and these revenues are
greatly helping in reducing our
costs. As a reminder, clear or
white trash bags are required at
the transfer site. The employees
at the transfer site have been
directed not to accept trash in
anything other than clear or
white bags. Please remember
they do their best to assist you
and still follow the directions of
the town council. Thank you for
your cooperation.
A cooperation agreement was
renewed with the Lyme Central
School Board, and a meeting is
scheduled with the Village of
Chaumont to discuss and renew
the shared services contract
which expired at the end of No-
vember. We look forward to
working with these boards in an
effort to eliminate duplication of
services and save tax dollars.
The town website,
www.townoflyme.com, continues
to be updated with new information. Additionally, in keeping
with the New York State transparency law, we also have a link
on the homepage which will take
you to the town of Lyme meeting
information website. You can
also access the information website by typing
www.townoflyme.zoomshare.co
m in the address bar. This site
has all the information pertaining
to our upcoming meeting.
As Supervisor, I am honored to
have been elected as the Vice
President of the Jefferson
County Supervisor's Association. The association deals directly with our county legislators
and administrators in an effort to
represent the residents of our
respective towns. I look forward
to the opportunity this appointment will offer.
May everyone have a happy,
healthy and prosperous 2013.

Teens in the Community ~Leta Harp
In partnership with Samaritan’s Purse,
these teens gathered to be a blessing to children in
impoverished countries and locations that are destitute all over the world through Operation Christmas
Child.
These children that will receive the boxes,
have never received a new item, or gift in their lives,
let alone a Christmas present. So the small gesture
of compiling candy, hygiene items, toys, school supplies, small clothing items, and books helped them
learn they could touch lives in a big way.
They packed and wrapped 26 gifts to ship
overseas with the organization and financial support
of River of Life Fellowship church.
The local students
that participated
were: Christian Mott

Ethan Collins (General

we are still going strong.

The Chaumont Presbyterian Church is trying something else new
(remember the "purse auction"?). The 1st and 3rd Sunday of each
month we are having a "kid-friendly" supper meal (not covered-dishjust come and eat) @ 5pm, followed by a short church service. The
service will also be simple and geared toward teaching the children
about church, while not
"dumbing it down" too much
for the adults. In between
these services, "lessons-in-abag" will be available for the
children to take home and
enjoy with their families. These bags will contain
a book or books, and a craft
and/or a related activity to be
used and returned at their
next visit. They will then be
re-supplied and shared with
someone else and so on.....
PURPOSE?
 To allow the children to become comfortable with being in
church
 To feed little tummies as well as minds
 To give parents an alternative to the earlier morning service
 To involve the whole families in hearing the Bible and valuebased children's stories
 To allow the community to grow and change with us
All ages and all family units are welcomed.
Thinking about a New Year's resolution to volunteer to help people more this coming year? The Lyme Lions Club is a great local
organization that can help you with that resolution! We meet the
first and third Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. at the Copley House. Our
club donated $500 to the Chaumont Food pantry in both November and December to help local families enjoy meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as purchased gifts for 10 angels
from the school's angel tree. The Lyme Lions Club will be having
its Annual Weekend Scholarship Breakfasts on February 2 and 3
at the Three Mile Bay Fire Hall to coincide with the Annual Three
Mile Bay Fire Hall Fishing Derby. Also watch for flyers about our
Annual Corned Beef Dinner in March and German Dinner in
April! Please contact Lion Rachel Sprague 783-4032 or Lion

In 2011, The family of Barb Moran began running the Boston Marathon to support our Aunt Barb "Bullet" Moran in her courageous
and determined fight against cancer. A fight that begin at the DanaFarber Cancer Institute in Boston in 1998. In February of 2012,

In honor of her inspiring and unforgettable 51 years, Barb's lifelong
best friend Penny Ruhm will take Boston for Bullet to the finish line
in 2013 to raise money to fund basic cancer research at Dana-Farber.
