Fulton boys
repeat as
sectional
champs
For the second straight year, Fulton won
the overall Section III boys bowling team
title and advanced to the state championships
March 6-7 in Poughkeepsie.
Fulton finished first over Tri-Valley League
powers V-V-S and New Hartford in the overall team standings Feb. 14 at Pin-O-Rama in
Utica. All teams bowled a three-game set followed by 15 Baker games to determine champions.
The Raiders were also the Class A champions. Jondn Tryniski had the top three-game
block for the Raiders with a 650. V-V-S won
the Class B title and Frankfort-Schuyler took
home the Class C/D crown.
This year’s Section III All-Star Team is
made up of the high average bowlers from
the four Section III leagues and the two top
bowlers from the sectional tournament. Fulton bowlers had the top two averages in the
OHSL. But because the Raiders are headed to
states as a team, Connor Harrington of CBA
earned the OHSL spot on the all-star team.
The other league high average bowlers are:
Jamie Cliff of Oswego (CNYCL), Steve Piatkowski of Canastota (Center State Conference)
and Josh Mennig of V-V-S (TVL). Rounding
out the all-star team are Henninger’s Bobby
Moro (726 series) and V-V-S’ Tristan Tormey
(703). Moro and Tormey were the top two individual finishers at sectionals.

Roth, Baker, Faliero, Moran to enter
Empire State Bowling Hall of Fame
by Mike Pettinella
Bowling fans in Western New
York won’t have to drive too far
to witness the induction of professional bowling greats Mark Roth
and Tom Baker, along with amateur
standout Mike Faliero and bowling
industry leader Jack Moran, into
the Empire State USBC Bowling
Association Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony is
scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday,
April 10 at Antonio’s Banquet &
Conference Center, 7708 Niagara
Falls Boulevard, Niagara Falls,
N.Y., (inside the Quality Inn). The
dinner is being held in conjunction with the ESUSBCBA’s annual
delegates meeting, which will take
place earlier in the day.
Tickets are $30 each for the dinner ($270 for a table of 10) and
can be obtained by calling 315-
623-7100 or sending an email to
[email protected]. Seating
is limited so those interested in attending should reserve their tickets
as soon as possible.
Roth, a Fulton resident, and
Baker, a Buffalo native now residing in King, N.C., are two of the
biggest names in the history of the
Professional Bowlers Association.
Originally from Brooklyn, Roth
burst onto the PBA scene with
a cranking, hard-throwing style,
which set the stage for many of today’s players. He won PBA Player of the Year honors four times
– 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1984, and
led the Tour in average in six different seasons, including a then-record 221.699 in 1979.
Roth won a record eight titles
in 1978 and seven more the next
year. He finished his career with
34 Tour titles and $1.6 million in
earnings. He was inducted into
the PBA Hall of Fame in 1987, the
USBC Hall of Fame in 2009 and
was voted No. 5 on the list of the
“PBA’s 50 Greatest Players of the
Last 50 Years.”
Tragically, Roth, 58, suffered a
stroke last June which has left him
partially paralyzed on his left side.
Baker, 55, is still going strong
on the PBA Senior Tour following
a stellar 32-year career on the regular tour – a career that is marked
by 10 titles, including the 2004
PBA World Championship. His
best year came in 1981 when he
captured three titles and broke the
$100,000 mark in single-season
earnings.
“Bakes” has dominated the PBA
Senior Tour since joining in 2005,
winning four Senior major titles
and four Senior standard tournaments, while continuing to compete on the regular tour. He was
named Senior Rookie of the Year
and Senior Player of the Year in
2005, becoming the only senior
player to earn both honors in a
single season.
He won Senior Player of the Year
honors again in 2006 and 2007, an
unprecedented streak in the history
of the PBA Senior Tour.
Baker has earned $1.7 million
as a professional bowler. Elected
to the PBA Hall of Fame in 1999,
Baker was voted No. 42 on the
PBA top 50 list.
Faliero, a West Seneca resident, has an impressive resume
of achievements at the collegiate

Left-hander Lee Burnett, of Lyons, earned the
top seed of stepladder finals at the 51st annual
Post-Standard Masters Bowling Tournament at
Lakeview Bowling Center on Feb. 14.
Burnett (7-0) clinched the top seed with
back-to-back wins over Rick Adams and Steve
Suslik. Burnett, 38, entered the finals with a 215
match-play average. Top prize for the Masters
is $2,500.
Because of publication deadlines, the results
of the Masters finals were unavailable at press
time. Look of a full report on the championship
round at Erie Blvd. Lanes in the next edition of
The CNY Striker.
Qualifying for the one-game stepladder finals
were Burnett, second-seeded Suslik (6-1, 220.2
avg.), third-seeded Cliff Saliba (7-1, 226) and
fourth-seeded Adams (6-1, 223).
Saliba, who won the tournament in 1992 and
2005, is the only former Masters champion
to advance. He is looking to become the first
three-time champion since Andy Melnyk.
Placing fifth and sixth this year was Ray Cyr,
Jr. and 2000 champ Dean Distin. Both finished
in the top six last year. Chris Leonard and Kris
O’Donaghy II took seventh and eighth place.
O’Donaghy rolled a 811 series on Feb. 14 in
match play but Chris Cooper won the Bert Sarno
Award for high match play series with a 813.

Melfi rolls back-to-back 300’s at Rainbow Lanes
Jim Melfi was a one-man strike force Feb. 4 in the Dale Bliss Memorial League at Rainbow
Lanes in Auburn.
Melfi opened with 12 straight strikes for a perfect game on lanes 3-4. In his second game,
Melfi continued to punish the pins as he finished with another 300 game. He rolled another
strike to start his third game to make it 25 consecutive strikes. But in the second frame, he
broke off, leaving a 10-pin.
Melfi started another strike streak by rolling seven in row and was looking at a possible 880
series going into the 10th frame. But in the 10th, Melfi left a 7-pin on his first ball then finished
with a 7-pin on his fill ball to finish with a 858 series.

Joey Petrowski is ready for a PBA Experience.
Petrowski, of East Syracuse, is one of 18
national amateurs selected for the PBA Experience Showdown, a USBC contest where
online voters choose who will get a chance
to bowl on the PBA telecast against the tour
players.
Petrowski, who bowls weekly in the PBA
Experience League at Bowl Mor on Tuesday
nights, must finish among the highest six
vote-getters to receive an all-expense paid
trip to Arlington, Texas.
The six finalists bowl at the USBC International Bowling Center in a six-game qualifier in early April. The top qualifier will have
an opportunity to compete on the televised
PBA Experience Showdown final that will
air April 11.
Petrowski was selected in a random drawing by the USBC for the Chameleon Pattern,
which is used on the pro tour. The USBC notified Petrowski by phone Feb. 2 that he was
a finalist.
“This is an awesome opportunity for me
and I want to try and take full advantage,”
said Petrowski, who has bowled in the PBA
Experience League for the last five years.
To cast your vote for Petrowski, go to
www.bowl.com. Online voting begins Feb.
15 and will run until the end of February.

History of t h e S B A :
The Win Scheding Tournament
By John Savage
Each year on the Thursday prior to Ash Wednesday, an
annual bowling tradition began in 1953 -- the Win Scheding
Pro-Am. Four friends started the tournament as a way to
have fun and also raise money for needy causes. These four
individuals were: Win Scheding, Ed Reddy, Red Parton and
Whitey Brenneman. It was first held at Seneca Lanes, which
was owned by Scheding.
All of these individuals would eventually become members
of the Syracuse Bowling Association Hall of Fame. The Pro-Am
event would pair good bowlers with sportswriters, television
personalities, radio personalities, corporate people, stars from
other sports and many sports-minded people who wanted to
have a good time as well as help local charities.
As the Pro-Am grew, it would eventually move to the 40-lane
Fairmount Lanes. The bowling was free at Fairmount and the
participants would donate money to the designated charity for
that year. Also, the bowlers would only have to pay for their bar
bill, which at times could be extensive. There were all kinds of
raffles that would also bring in a substantial amount of money.
The tournament continued at Strike and Spare Lanes in
Mattydale and has since moved to Flamingo Bowl.
Win Scheding
National Championship ready to begin
The 107th annual USBC Open Championships is set to begin
Feb. 20 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada.
The 2010 tournament will run until July 4 (last day of team
competition).
So far, more than 14,000 teams are scheduled to make the trip to
Reno’s National Bowling Stadium during the tournament’s 136day run. It will be the event’s record ninth visit to Reno and the
sixth time the tournament will be held at the 78-lane NBS.
Women’s Championship in El Paso
The 2010 USBC Women’s Championships will be held in El
Paso. More than 5,800 teams are scheduled to usher in a new era
on the tournament lanes.
For the first time, the 91st annual Women’s Championships will
be held in a convention-center setting. USBC will install 48 lanes
and the world’s largest mobile scoreboard inside the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts
Center, and the tournament will feature three divisions, instead of five, and an all-handicap
format for the first time.

Win Scheding Tournament
The Win Scheding Pro-Am Tournament, one of the longest-running charity bowling events
in Syracuse, drew 116 participants Feb. 11 at Flamingo Bowl. Once again, the Turner’s Club was
well-represented at the 57th annual tournament with 40 entries.
All proceeds from the Win Scheding Tournament, including 50/50 and ball raffles, will go to
the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Elmcrest Children’s Center. Last year, the tournament
donated $1,000 to each of those charities.
The Win Scheding is also held to honor six individuals for their contributions to local bowling:
Scheding, Whitey Brenneman, Bill Reddy, Red Parton, Ed Reddy and Bud VanderVeer. The nonsanctioned tournament was coordinated by Joe M. Paussa and his staff.
Jack Hamlin and Mike McCracken donated the use of Flamingo Bowl for the afternoon.
Championship plaques were donated by Saliba’s Pro Shop. Richie Sposato and Mark MacBain
also donated bowling balls for the raffle.
Dave Demperio posted the high game with a 300.

and amateur tournament levels, including the
championship of the International Eliminator in
2000 (where he won $100,000) and the Greater
Buffalo USBC Masters tourney in 2007.
The former Erie Community College AllAmerican also has several New York State
titles to his credit, including doubles (1984,
2004), team (2004) and Masters (1991). He
has more than 25 perfect games and a dozen
800 series, and has won gold, silver and bronze
medals in international competitions.
He was elected to the National Junior College Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and the
Greater Buffalo USBC Hall of Fame in 2008.
Currently, he is manager of Strikers Lanes in
West Seneca.
Moran, well known as proprietor of Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua, has helped shape
the course of organized bowling over the past
25 years, most notably as a high-ranking officer
with the New York State and national Bowling
Proprietors Association of America.
He was president of the NYS BPA from
1994-96, and president of BPAA national from
2002-04. He also has served as president of
the New York State Bowling Council, Finger
Lakes BPA and Greater Rochester BPA. He
has served on numerous BPAA committees at
the national and state levels.
A certified bowling coach, he has instructed
students at Finger Lakes Community College
and Canandaigua Academy for many years.
His many honors include the NYSBPA Service Award, BPAA Certificate of Achievement,
Canandaigua Rotarian of the Year, and NYS
WBA and Rochester bowling Proprietor of the
Year. He also was the recipient of the BPAA
President’s Medal.
Roth, Baker, Faliero and Moran will join
the other 119 individuals who will be grandfathered in from the former New York State
Bowling Association Hall of Fame to the ESUSBCBA Hall of Fame.

THE P-S MASTERS
NOTEBOOK
Chris Cooper scores
first-ever 800
Chris Cooper now has family bragging rights.
Cooper rolled back-to-back 289 games en route to a career-high
813 series during match play of The Post-Standard Masters Tournament on Feb. 6 at Flamingo Bowl.
Cooper, the son of Jean Cooper, now has the top series in the
Cooper family.
“I’m really excited,” Cooper said. “I finally beat my mom’s high
of 793.”
Chris used two balls during his 800 series. He left a 4-pin in the first game and in the second game
he left a 2-pin. Cooper’s previous career best was 791.
“I was hitting my target and being accurate and making good shots,” Cooper said.
Cooper said he was more worried about winning his first match against Shawn Cook than bowling
an 800 series. Cooper defeated Cook, 813-730.
“I wasn’t really thinking about the score at the time because I was trying to beat the guy I was
bowling,” Cooper said. “It was a tough win.”
Cooper said he had a chance to shoot in the 840 range with a strong third game. But an ill-timed
split cost him.
“In the 10th frame, I can strike out for 268 but I go up and leave a blowout 7-10 and shoot 235
with an open in the 10th,” Cooper said.
Masters Qualifying: Lessons Learned
I bowled in the Masters for the first time in 25
years. I have been a bowler since the late 50’s. I
have kept a 200 average for the last 25 years. I
oiled lanes daily for 19 years (1970’s through the
1980’s at Cazenovia). I had heard of the reverse
oil pattern or reverse block a couple of years
ago but paid no attention to it. For some goofy
reason, I decided to try the Masters again.
I checked the paper Sunday morning to see
how the scores were. I asked a few bowlers
about the lane condition and how they bowled.
The info that I received was that the shot was
around the second arrow (just one board left).
They all said that they didn’t bowl well because
they missed several easy spares.
So Sunday off I go with four other bowlers.
I only own three balls. One is a three-year-old
plastic; another is a 10-year-old plastic/rubber
thing that I assumed liked oil. The last one is a
20-year-old plastic for the 10-pin.
My first three tries on the second arrow during practice I never came up to the head pin. I
moved right and gave it two more tries on the
first arrow. I hit the head pin.
At my age, I usually know that during practice, the ball weighs 25 to 30 pounds. Before I
start, I should move my start position about two
boards left because the arm swing doesn’t hurt
as much as during practice and I usually put a
little more lift on the ball.
Now the tournament starts. But I didn’t move
left. I stayed where I got my two strikes during practice. In my first seven frames, I nicked
the head pin once and missed the head pin on
the right six times. I tried slowing down. I tried
more lift. I switched balls. But I still had not said
“Uncle”. After the 8th frame, one of my friends
said, “Go between the second and third arrow.”
He let me use one of his balls that was supposed
to hook more. The ninth and 10th frames were
practice balls trying to find out where to shoot.
With my first game is over, I hit the head pin
four times (one was a nick).
Game 2 started out with a buried hit and
I left the 10-pin. I did not use my 10-pin ball
and of course, the borrowed ball hung the gut-
by Dick Cargill
ter and went left when it almost got to the 10pin. I got strikes for the next three frames (they
were thin). I was hitting the crack between the
12th and 13th board. The 5th and 6th frames,
again, never hit the head pin. I had missed my
mark and hit the crack between the 11th and
12th board (a one board miss). The 7th and 8th
frames were with more lift (and more speed by
mistake) and I skimmed the head pin. I ended
up with a 190 something. It was now “Uncle”
time.
I decided to concentrate on other nearby
bowlers. The older guys like me were using the
third arrow exactly, stroking the ball and doing
very well. They would string four or five strikes
and then leave a mess. When they did leave the
mess, they had swung the ball one board too far
to the right and the ball floated. I have always
been a stroker so I knew exactly what they were
doing. As I scanned down through the other
bowlers, all were using the second arrow or any
board outside the 12th and were doing terrible.
Everyone using inside the 12th board were doing well.
So, for next year (I will try again), it should
be easier. I do know that for practice, I will be
using the 16th board. I will also be doing everything I can to not let my ball hit the 12th board
or any board to the right. I will also be sure to
concentrate on picking up all my spares using
only those inside 12 o 13 boards. I won’t listen
to other bowlers, and just watch the old-timers
(like me) the strokers. I am assuming that for
the past three years (maybe longer), the reverse
oil pattern has been used. It will be very easy
to tell next year. Start practice on the third arrow and never let your ball hit the 12th board
or any board to the right of it. If the ball hooks
well enough on the 15th board, that is where to
start. If the ball skates (or floats) when it hits the
12th board, then adjust so that it doesn’t happen.
I know now that if I could have bowled three
more games on any of those lanes, I could have
hit 600. But for this year, I will just have to be
satisfied with my 400-something, my first one
in a few years.
Secretary’s Corner
I would like to address an issue that is often misunderstood among league secretaries.
It’s the issue of certification (or as we used to call it, sanctioning). If you are running a
sanctioned league then all bowlers participating in the league must be sanctioned. It seems
obvious I know, but you would be surprised how often this procedure is ignored. When a
bowler is subbing in your league and he or she tells you that they are sanctioned in another
league they STILL need to fill out a new sanction card for your league stating the name
of the league and where they paid their sanction fee. If they have not actually paid in that
league you will receive a letter from the SBA office telling you that you have an ineligible
bowler in your league. I would suggest that all league secretaries read rule # 101a and
101b in your rule book concerning membership requirements. Allowing a non-sanctioned
bowler in your league can result in a forfeit of points or the vacating of award scores.
At the start of each night of league play, take a walk up and down the lanes and look
for people that you don’t recognize. Some teams may bring in a sub and “forget” to tell
you. You may hear something to the effect of “He’s only going to bowl this one time”.
It does not matter. They still need to be sanctioned. If you have any questions regarding
these procedures, please contact either the SBA or the SWBA office.
Just a reminder, please do not wait until the end of the season to turn in your award
applications. If you hold them too long we cannot guarantee you will have in time for
your banquet.
“Hit ‘em good” – Kevin Peirson
High rollers: Gary Rozyczko, of Syracuse, won the Win Scheding Award as the
tournament’s top qualifier with a 769 series. Rozyczko was also the only player to roll an
award score during qualifying with a 300 game. He added another perfect game during match
play in a 773-566 win over Peter Moro Jr.
But Rozyczko’s stay in the tournament was short-lived. He was eliminated in his third match
by his best friend, Dave Gonzalski. It was just the second time Gonzalski and Rozyczko went
head-to-head in a tournament.
“If I had to lose to some one I’m glad it was Dave,” Rozyczko said.
Dean Distin rolled a 300 game in the first round of match play. It is the second straight year
Distin has recorded a perfect game in Masters competition at Flamingo.
“It’s becoming a good habit,” Distin said.
Masters draws big numbers: For the third straight year, the Masters drew more
than 900 entries. This year’s qualifying drew 917 competitors which was four off from last
year. The 8:30 a.m. squad on Jan. 20 drew a tournament-record 123 walk-ins and a total of 189
players walked in overall.
The magic number: The cut-off score to make match play was 616, 10 pins lower than
last year’s cut off score. Four players were tied at 616 and a roll-off was needed to decide
the final two spots. Chris Cook (687) and Frank Bailey (632) won the roll-off against David
Ghezzi (611) and Kristy Moro (596). It was the third straight year a roll-off was needed to
decide the last two match play spots.
Oh brother: There were four sets of brothers who qualified for match play: Josh and
Mike McClusky, Chris and Jeff Cooper, Kris and Nick Goodfellow and Shawn and Chris
Cook. Chris Cooper achieved a career-best series of 813 in his first match against Shawn
Cook. It was Cooper’s first-ever 800 series.
Cefalo still has game: Mike Cefalo, 65, has the distinction of being the oldest
player to qualify for match play. He rolled a 631 in qualifying but was knocked out of match
play after two matches.
Masters champs: Seven champions reached match play: Tom Minnegan (1976), Andy
Melnyk (1987, 1995, 2007), Dean Distin (2000), Cliff Saliba (1992, 2005), Jimmy Zimmerman
(2006), John Kohanski Jr. (1999, 2002) and defending champ Randy Webster.
Minnegan, 63, took a few years off from bowling in the Masters before returning with great
success. Minnegan entered this year with his teammates from the GSL.
“I just didn’t feel like I wanted to bowl in it,” Minnegan said. “It’s a good tournament. It’s
well-handled and well-managed. It’s fun to be here.”
Big scores at Flamingo: Conditions at Flamingo Bowl for the first weekend of
match play seemed to bring out the best in bowlers. One week after 917 competitors could
only scratch out six 700 series at AMF Strike N Spare in qualifying, match play bowlers posted
a whopping 66 700 series in two days, including an 800. Last year there were 48 700 or 800
series at Flamingo in match play.
A rare DQ: A rules violation forced tournament officials to disqualify 17-year-old Mike
Suarez from match play on Feb. 7. For the first time, only bowlers 18 years of age or older by
Jan. 30 were eligible to compete in the tournament. After Suarez won his first match against
Jim Tarby Jr., 672-657, officials discovered the violation. Suarez, who finished in the top 10 of
the Auburn Masters, was DQ’d during his second match.
“It’s unfortunate that Tarby lost but we couldn’t go backward after the next match was in
progress,” tournament director Bill Vangel told The Post-Standard.

The CNY Striker   HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS
VARSITY NOTES
v In a showdown for first place in the Onondaga League, East
Syracuse-Minoa boys swept defending champion Fulton, 4-0,
to win the regular season title Feb. 3 at AMF Strike N Spare.
Joe Boccardo rolled a 692 to lead the way for the Spartans
(50-6), who dethroned needed to win all four points against the
Raiders to take the crown. Joe Erardi helped out with a 633
including a 279 game while Sean Gavan shot a 604 series.
High man for Fulton (49-7) was Dan Wahl with a 697 followed
by Jondn Tryniski with a 624 and Derek Southworth with a 619.
v Cicero-North Syracuse (37-10-1) repeated as CNYCL Nation-
al Division champions this winter. The Northstars finished 24-6 in
league competition to beat runner-up Liverpool by four points.
Junior Derek Joss led the Northstars with a 209 average.
Joss also posted a high game of 280 this season. Seniors Tom
Rogalski (203) and Jeff Chapman (201) also contributed to CNS’ success.
v The Vernon-Verona-Sherrill boys team capped off an unde-
feated season in the Tri-Valley League with a 7-4 victory over
Clinton on Feb. 5 at CAC Clubhouse in Sherrill.
James Neverette rolled a team-high 663 for the Red Devils (14-0, 16-1), who are going for their sixth straight Section
III Class B title Feb. 14. Collin Laguzza (258/628) and Tristan
Tormey (606) bowled well against Clinton.
Last month, Josh Mennig rolled his first career 300 game and
finished with a 721 series to help the Red Devils dispose of Utica
Notre Dame, 10-1. The Red Devils are coached by Dave Hyle.
The V-V-S girls team also defeated Clinton on Feb. 5, 110, as Jessie Hyle led the way with a 210 game and 589 series.
Lizzie Van Slyke helped out with a 230 game and a 583 series
for the Red Devils (9-3, 10-6).
v The Section III girls bowling championships will be held 10
a.m. Feb. 20 at AMF Strike N Spare. The defending champions
are: Utica Proctor (overall and Class A), Camden (Class B) and
Waterville (Class C-D).
The Raiders are looking for their third straight title but the
favorite is CNYCL National Division champion Rome Free.
The Black Knights, led by Olivia Bodley, beat the Raiders twice
this season head-to-head.
Bodley won the Section III individual crown last year. But
she isn’t a one-player team. Other key bowlers in the Rome
lineup are Alexis Zakala, Sarah Foley and Sasha Watts.
Camden (10-2), led by Sabrina Williams, is a contender in
Class B.
v Auburn girls repeated as CNYCL American Division champions with a 29-1 league record. Ashley Tuttle carried a teamhigh average of 171.83 for the Maroons (37-11 overall), who
are coached by Michelle Feldman.
