Cwm Graig Du to Brecon Beacons
From Builth Wells take the A483 to Garth. As you come down the hill into Garth
take the B4519 left for Upper Chapel, continue for approx 2 miles over the cattle grid
on to the Military range. Carry on for 250meters where you come to the Red Kite
viewing point, one of the most picturesque panoramic views over the Irfon Valley.
There is a plaque explaining the make up of the rock formations including forna &
flora, you may also see red kites buzzards at this point.
From there head for Upper chapel on to the Cathedral town of Brecon, from Brecon
take the A470 towards the Brecon beacons just past Libanas turn right on to the
A4215 to Heol senni then to Ystrafellta. Here you may see peregrine falcons red kite
sparrow hawks and merlins there may also be a few hen harriers about, you will see
many of the wild welsh mountain ponies which have roamed for hundreds of years.
This is an old drovers route you climb high then level out following the stream, on
the right is a walled stockade where the drovers kept their sheep at night while they
stayed in the rather cramped accommodation next door, before moving on next day.
You drive through Ystrafellta, which brings you to the breath taking waterfalls where
rivers Mellte, Hepste, Pyrddin and Nedd Fechan plunge over a series of waterfalls,
the highest concentration of falls in Wales. there are different walks here to suit all
abilities. From here head south to the A4059 turn left this will take you past Cader
Fawr down on to the A470 and past the Brecon Beacons, this route is one of the most
stunning scenic routes for wild life & breath taking views. Then make your way back
to Builth Wells.
Abergwesyn Pass
From Beulah which is on the A483, take the right turn after the Trout Inn on to
Abergwesyn. At Abergwesyn turn right for Tregaron, the road is quite narrow but
will have plenty of room to pass.
Where the large rocks almost meet on the left of the valley this is called wolves leap,
in the air you may see red kites, buzzards, tree pipits, redstarts, while the plied fly
catcher enjoys the shelter of the oak woodland You then come to a amazing
broadening of the valley you cross the three Irish bridges, excellent area for picnics.
You then climb rapidly up the renown Devils Stair Case on then around to the left to
Llyn Brianne dam. Just past this is the small hamlet of Ystraffin where the last true
Welsh highwayman Twm Sion Catti’s used to hide out, park in the RSPB Carpark
the walk or should I say climb to Sion Catti’s cave this is only for the keen and hardy
this area Dinas is where the Red Kites when facing extinction, survived.
Carry on to Llandovery take the A40 for Brecon turn at Llwyll & head over the
Military range five miles from here is the mock German village used for training
quite some thing to look at from a distance drive to Tirabad then on to
Llangammarch Wells, which will lead you back onto the A483 to Builth Wells.
