BETWEEN THE LINES
ANDRUS TRANSPORTATION NEWSLETTER
S
eptember has been a blur, I
wanted to take a breath and tell
each and every employee at Andrus
Thank you!!! We continue to do
well. There are a few things I
would like to report on in the way
of Andrus News. The first is Truck
Driver Appreciation. We had a
great time making burgers and dogs
for drivers in
all the terminals. I think
all in all we
served well
over
600
meals. Shaun
Daniels in Fontana has caused us to
step up our game, as he served ribs
one day. So look forward to next
time. I realize there were many
who did not
get through to
participate in
the
meals.
For that, your
dispatchers
will be getting me a list of who did
not, so we can get you a little something. Also, the drawings were fun
as well. I want to thank all those
who participated in the cooking,
cleaning, and all else. Truck drivers
Rock!!!!
Secondly, we are finally closing on
a new yard in Vegas. It is a great
property and we are really excited
about it. It is half-mile from Clearwater and only one mile from the
Cheyenne exit. We will fix up the
bathroom/shower, do minimal grading, and it will be set. Remember,
we are only able to continue to improve here at Andrus with all your
great efforts.
Thank you so much!!

WHAT CAME FIRST THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?
B
ear with me, because
while this may seem like a
strange analogy for a
safety article it is one that has
crossed my mind many times
during accident interviews and it
crossed my mind again this
week.
During a recent interview, we
asked the driver how he felt he
was doing overall as a driver at
Andrus. He was very proud of
his on time delivery record and
the quality of his work. Granted
up until this point in time, we
were as well. There had been a
few minor issues along the way,
all parking lot type issues as was
this one, but this one was not so
minor. Please remember that an
accident does not have to happen on a highway or in traffic to
be a major or costly accident.
So, as it relates to a driving record, here is the question. Does it
matter or does it not? In a parking lot or dock situation there is a
history of accidents, though they
might be considered minor, and
everything else the driver accomplishes is perfect, DOES THAT
MATTER?
Is one part of the job more important than the other? The answer is YES it matters and in the
grand scheme of trucking YES
one is more important than the
other. SAFETY is always more
important.
When you have a CDL it means
you are in a professional classification of a driver and thus the
expectation is that you are a better driver than the average driver
that holds a Class C license.
How do you become and stay a
safe driver? What are the things
a driver has to do to become and
stay a safe driver?
Most of you would agree that
when you started driving you
were taught procedures on how
to inspect equipment, most of
you learned quickly that in parking lots and docking areas you
needed to be extra cautious to
avoid backing and stationary accident situations. You did certain
things to make sure you did not
have an accident. You got out
and looked or asked for help. If,
in fact we learn these actions as
new and inexperienced drivers to
keep us safe and out of accidents
why then is then that drivers with
many years of experience and
knowledge have these types of
accidents on almost a daily basis? No one really likes the answers but we are all very aware
of what they are. Call it complacency, laziness, arrogance or any
number of words that come to
mind. In our industry any action
that takes place that includes any
of these descriptions can result in
embarrassment, damages and
tragedy.
As we go forward into the winter
season you will face even more
obstacles that will make your daily work even more intense.
Please remember the lessons you
have learned over the years of
your driving careers that have
made kept you safe.
Can you be described as a good
or great driver by delivering on
time and getting great miles if
you did not inspect that last trailer that you picked up and there
was a flat tire that started a fire
while enroute to your delivery?
So.....Which does come first
the Chicken or the Egg?

A
s many of you may know,
our current medical and dental plans will be coming up for renewal on December 1st. As such,
our next Open Enrollment period
is scheduled to run from November 1st through November 30th.
Any Andrus plans selected will
have an effective date of December 1, 2015
This past year we were fortunate to
have been able to offer a variety of
plans to choose from. We are currently receiving quotes and negotiating new ideas for this upcoming
year. As usual, this has proven to
be yet another difficult undertaking. The Affordable Care Act
(Obamacare) continues to change
the rules periodically, which in
turn has made the renewal of many
of our current plans challenging.
Our goal is to continue providing
plans that are affordable for the
employee and that are considered
compliant, so that those enrolled
may be shielded, from taxes and
penalties at the end of the year.
W
e want to know how we
can improve. You have
recently been asked to provide us
with an email address.
The reason
for the request is simple.
We
have asked
an outside
company to
Sadly, again this year, it may be
costly to insure a spouse and/or
dependents. Obama will have a
hard time convincing me that
there’s anything ‘Affordable’
about his Act. So, yet again as
well, we want to encourage you to
investigate other options, such as
Obamacare plans and their subsidies that may be available to your
family. While your cost, for an
employee only plan here at Andrus, may be manageable, you may
be able to save considerably by
having dependent children and/or
your spouse covered elsewhere.
Andrus is dedicated to providing
assistance to help you explore your
options. The “Obamacare” Open
Enrollment, for plans that would
be effective on 1/1/16, will also
begin on November 1st.
When our Open Enrollment starts,
we will have enrollment packets
available at our offices and in all
of our terminals. Also, you may
obtain them on-line and even by
email.
conduct a survey to help us understand where we can improve.
The more drivers that participate
will obviously give us more information. This survey will be taking pace the third week in October
and there will be a fast turnaround
on the results. If you have not
done so please supply us with an
email address so that your voice is
heard. Your participation will be
We encourage everyone to get a
packet and select their plans as
soon as possible.
Do not assume that you will be
able to continue your current coverage uninterrupted and, finally,
please remember that it is the employee’s responsibility to assure
that we receive all properly completed applications within the
Open Enrollment period.
Thank you for all you do for us
and we will always do our best to
provide valuable benefits to you.
As more information becomes
available, we will be notifying you
through the appropriate channels.

CHELSEA DEVEY—DIRECTOR OF CUSTOMER SERVICE
M
y name is Chelsea
Devey and I started
working at Andrus in 2008 and I am
the Director of Customer Service.
My husband, step-daughter and I
moved to Saint George from Salt
Lake City to follow my husband’s
dream of owning his own restaurant.
Most everyone in the St.

were the WACC Champions that
year and went to the National Championships where we placed 9th out of
160 teams! I have loved St. George
since my college days and I was
happy to move back here in 2008.
My career in transportation started
in the Aviation Industry, working
for a private jet charter company in
Salt Lake. I love to travel and have
found myself working for companies where I can do that. When I
started here at Andrus I was a CSR
Assistant, then moved to covering
Northern California and Reno, then
some of our National Accounts. I
was also the CSR Lead for about a
year and then promoted to Director
in 2011. I have a couple accounts
right now that I still maintain, Coca
Cola being the busiest.
I went to college at Dixie
State here in St. George, UT and

In the 7 years that I have
been with Andrus, I have had the
wonderful opportunity to visit our
great customers across the West, and
I can tell you they LOVE ANDRUS.
I have travelled to Northern California, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Southern California and the feeling is the
same; our customers admire the dedication and reliability of a carrier our
size. I have an incredible amount of
respect for the hard work, long
hours and demanding job that our
Drivers have. Our drivers deserve
acknowledgement all year long for
the job they do
every day. If you
are ever in the
Saint George office, please come
say “Hi”, I love
putting faces to
names.
NATE GOLDRUP— BROKERAGE
y name is Nate Goldrup. I
was born in California. My
father was a writer for MGM Studios in Los Angeles, CA at the
time. He wrote for both TV and
Motion Pictures. He didn’t have
any interest in raising his family in
California, even though he knew it
would make it more difficult to be
a writer here in Utah. We moved
to Utah in 1978. I grew up in
West Jordan, UT and attended
Cottonwood High school. I pursued a career in the Fitness field
where I was a certified Personal
Trainer for a short period of time.
I was married back in 2003 and
have two beautiful girls (does anyone ever say anything different
about their kids)? My girls are ten
and thirteen years old.
I began working in the Logistics industry in 2013 with Interide
Logistics-later bought out by XPO
Logistics. I’m now here at Andrus, working as a freight broker.
I enjoy the work. It’s fast-paced
and even crazy at times. I really
appreciate the
management
here at Andrus. This is
one company
where I can
say that and
mean it.
