Ota City makes efforts to create an
exchange between foreigners and
Japanese living in Ota City to achieve
“Internationalization of Ota City”.
This is done for the purpose of creating
a friendlier atmosphere for foreigners.
Ota City holds cultural exchange
events featuring each regional area in
cooperation with 18 Branches and the
Department of Internationalization
Section of Ota City.
Since Tokyo was chosen to the host
of the Olympic Games in 2020,
the number of foreign visitors will
increase. By hosting an international
exchange, Ota will continue to
promote awareness to welcome
foreign visitors.
Come join the regional activities!

∼ Japanese Seasonal Festivals ∼
In Japan, there are five “Seasonal Festival (Sekku)” events. These include Jinjitsu, Jyoushi, Tango,
Shichiseki, and Choyo. On January 7 (Jinjitsu), Japanese people eat Nanakusa-gayu (rice porridge
containing seven spring herbs). Also, the celebration of girl’s health takes place on March 3 (Jyoushi,
Hinamatsuri Festival). It is traditional to eat Hishimochi (diamond-shaped mochi) and drink Sirozake
(sweet white sake). On May 5 (Tango, Boy’s Festival), people celebrate boy’s health and take baths
with Syobu (blue flag iris). Tanabata Festival (Shichiseki) is an event when people write their wishes
on a strip of paper (Tanzaku) and hang them from bamboo branches on July 7. On September 9, Shoyo
is also called “Kiku-no-Sekku (Chrysanthemum Festival)”; people enjoy drinking alcohol amongst
Chrysanthemums.
Enjoy Japanese seasonal festivals!

Events held in Ota City
It is cold today, but are you doing all right? Keep yourself warm and don't catch a cold.
On the day, we held Japan Day, an event for introducing Japanese New Year’s culture and customs. Many
foreigners joined this event. Oshogatsu (Japanese New Year’s Day) is very important for Japanese people.
What holiday is important in your country? Every country celebrates their special days in original ways. A
variety of events to introduce Japanese culture has been held in various places in Ota. These events create nice
opportunities to meet foreigners, not only Japanese. If you come join these events,
you will be able to celebrate and enjoy daily life in the Japanese culture.
