Dear Friends of the Chagrin Valley,
We are looking forward to Memorial Day weekend. It’s not only the unofficial start of summer, but also
BLOSSOM TIME!
The Chagrin Valley Jaycees, along with our generous sponsors, are honored to have you as our guests for
the 60th annual Blossom Time Festival. In this copy of the 2016 Blossom Time program, there is a hidden
picture game for kids (If you can find them all, you are eligible for a SPECIAL PRIZE!), along with lots of
information about the events throughout the Chagrin Valley during this exciting weekend.
This year’s festival theme is the “Wild, Wild West”, complete with floats, rides, bands, and much more. We
will begin on Thursday at dusk with the 30th annual Heinen’s Fine Foods Blossom Time Balloon Glow,
where balloonists light up the evening sky with a stunning display of colors.
Throughout the weekend, there is lots of great music sponsored by B’laster. Take a look at the complete
music schedule and I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. While enjoying the music and perhaps
dancing up an appetite, you can try some of the many local culinary delights at the Superior Beverage Taste
of Chagrin, next to Triangle Park. The fine food is available Saturday and Sunday from late morning until the
park closes.
IN CLEVELAND HEIGHTS
Sunday is a fun-filled day. Its starts bright and early with the 40th Annual Motorcars Blossom Time Run,
sponsored by Motorcars Honda and Toyota in Cleveland Heights, University Hospitals, and Lyndall
Insurance. This is a unique and challenging 5.25 mile course for all ages and is considered one of the
premier races in the state. Please be sure to sign on up and join me in a great challenge!
The fun continues on Sunday afternoon with the 60th Annual Blossom Time Parade, proudly sponsored by
Willoughby Supply. Gather with your family, friends, and neighbors as you watch homemade floats, custom
sports cars, and other themed attractions mosey down East Washington Street to South Franklin Street.
The volunteers of the Chagrin Valley Jaycees are committed to serving the needs of the entire Chagrin Valley
community. Between fun events such as the Lighting of the Greens in Chagrin, the Chili Brew-off, Octubafest,
and Blossom Time, we aim to help make this area a great place to live, work and raise a family. We do this
by supporting such worthy causes such as Womensafe, Ho-Mita-Koda, CASA for Kids, Santa’s Hideaway
Hollow, Chagrin Safety Town, Bainbridge-Russell Safety Town, and many, many more local charities, year
after year.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every member (along with their families) who
volunteer their time and energy. Their support, along with the support of the Chagrin Valley community, is
invaluable.

We wish you a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. Thank you for supporting your community, our
sponsors, our volunteers, and our ongoing partnership with local charities. Between the 30th Balloon Glow,
the 40th Run, and the 60th Parade, we hope you’ll enjoy a combined 130 years of Blossom Time fun!

Best of theme parade contest
Last year the CVJC Blossom Time Committee awarded the first annual award for the best
themed party during the Blossom Time Parade. Congratulations to the 2015 Winners Tom
and Sally Florkiewicz of 230 East Washington!
This year the Chagrin Valley Jaycees will once again be honoring the best-decorated or
themed yard party during the annual Blossom Time Parade on Sunday afternoon May
29th. Who has the best Blossom Time parade party in the Chagrin Valley? This has been a
contested argument for years and now is your chance to prove that it is you!
This year’s blossom theme is The Wild West; just imagine how you can incorporate this
year’s theme into your party plans!
ride
No need to register or complete an entry form. Just plan on decorating your home or
business along the parade route and you are eligible to be the winner. The yard or party
decorations consistent with the theme will be judged by the Blossom Time Chairman during

Rachel & The Beatnick Playboys - Rachel Brown
and the Beatnik Playboys are a delicious musical
anachronism – Americana music of today that seems
like it could have come from a time when milk came in
glass bottles and doctors still made house calls. Powered
by singer-songwriter Brown’s multi-octave voice, fed by
guitarist Dave Huddleston’s tasty licks and harmonies,
decorated by the smooth grooves of string bassist Bill
Watson and drummer Roy King, the band journeys through
the musical landscape of country, jazz, blues and gospel
on a trip you want to take over and over.
Thursday May 26, 8:30 - 10:30
Underworld blues band - Based in Cleveland, Ohio, Gaetano’s
Underworld Blues Band combines traditional blues with rock, funk,
jazz and reggae in a fun, danceable style. Members are Gaetano
(Tom) Letizia on guitar and vocals, Mike Delia on drums and vocals
and Larry Keller on bass and vocals. All three are 30 year veterans
of the Midwest blues, rock and jazz scenes. The Underworld band
won the Cleveland Blues Society City Wide Memphis Challenge in
2015 and has performed all over Ohio as well as several shows in
Memphis, Tennessee on legendary Beale Street. The band’s first
CD, “Voodoo Doll & Other Blues Lessons” is highly acclaimed by
all the blues publications and available on Itunes, Amazon and all
digital formats. www.underworldblues.com

This year Motorcars, University Hospitals, and Lyndall Insurance will host the 40th Annual
Motorcars Blossom Time Run. The 5.25 mile rolling (and some not so rolling) hills course
runs through Chagrin Falls, Bainbridge, and Bentleyville. While runners enjoy the beauty
of the Chagrin Valley they are cheered on by residents along the way. The Motorcars
Blossom Time Run, one of the biggest in Northeast Ohio, and a Blossom Time tradition,
draws approximately 2000 participants each year. Come down to the Village to see the
9:00 a.m. start at the intersection of Bell and Main Streets, then walk to South Frankiln
Street to take in the finish and the Taste of Chagrin.
Along with the Run is the 1 mile Fitness Walk. Walk participants line up behind the runners
and start at the same time then are shown where to turn off the main course to the finish.
Immediately following the run is the Kiddie Run. The Kiddie Run starts at the finish line
on South Franklin. Registration is held at the Intermediate School Gym on Philomethian

Blossom Time Parade
On Sunday, May 29, WILLOUGHBY SUPPLY and the Chagrin Valley Jaycees will present
the Annual Blossom Time Parade, celebrating its 60th Anniversary. This event is
traditionally the climax of the Blossom Time Festival. It has become one of the finest and
most colorful parades in Ohio. This celebration was held annually in Chagrin Falls prior to
World War II, and was revived by the Jaycees 60 years ago with much success. Bands,
floats, fire engines, marching units, antique cars and clowns from all over the state of
Ohio have been among the featured attractions in past years.
Previous years’ parades have charmed an estimated 60,000 spectators, and an even
larger crowd is expected for 2016! We cordially invite you to help make this the most
memorable in its history! Enjoy this year’s parade theme of: Wild Wild West!
2015 Blossom Time Parade
Grand Marshal
One of the annual highlights of the Blossom Time festival is the Willoughby Supply Blossom Time
Parade, which takes place the day before Memorial Day. Each year, the Chagrin Valley Jaycees select
someone as the Grand Marshal for the parade. You’ll see the Grand Marshal riding in the parade right
behind the fire departments, police departments, and military. Over the years, the Jaycees have been
honored to welcome a Senator, Congressmen, local dignitaries, celebrities, and other deserving people
as the Grand Marshal.
The 2016 Grand Marshal is Larry Morrow, a name familiar to many native Clevelanders. Larry is a
legend in Northeast Ohio, having manned the broadcast booth of a number of local radio stations over
a career that spanned 4 decades. Following four years of DJ-ing at radio stations near his native
Detroit, Larry broke into the Cleveland airwaves at the legendary WIXY-1260 AM in 1966, just as the
station was starting to grow. In the years that followed, Larry helped promote many major musical
acts in the Cleveland market, including groups from the British Invasion and Motown.
Larry continued his accomplished Cleveland radio career at WWWE, WERE, and most recently WQAL
as the host of the morning drive from 1985 until 2000. In that time, Larry became well-known for his
affection for his adopted hometown, being named “Mr. Cleveland” by former Mayor George Voinovich.
Larry has had the honor to introduce 4 United States presidents during their visits to Cleveland and
acted as the emcee for Cleveland’s bicentennial celebration. Larry was also the first of only two Ohio
broadcasters to be nominated to the prestigious Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago.
A former Marine who served in Korea, Larry traveled to Vietnam in 1969, serving on a confidential
mission from the government through the Pentagon and to record holiday messages from American
servicemen overseas so loved ones back home could hear their
voices – still one of his career highlights. A longtime resident
of South Russell, Larry has been married to his wife Rosary for
over 40 years. Currently, he stays busy as Adjunct Faculty and
Teacher of Executive Communications at John Carroll University
and as a marketing director for a local flooring company.
Congratulations to Larry Morrow as Grand Marshal of the 2016
Blossom Time Parade!

Bill is the originator and organizer of the Blossom Time Balloon Festival. This year, Captain
Billy will fly the ‘Ugliest Duckling’. The design is a variation on the ‘Ugly Duckling’ theme.
Bill became interested in ballooning in 1985 and was licensed in 1986. In 1987, he
helped organize the local effort for the Great Balloon Lift for Farmers and received the
1988 NOBPA President’s Award for his work. Bill enjoys competitive ballooning events,
having participated in 10 US Nationals, finishing 16th a number of years ago. He has
also participated in all 4 of the US Team Championships in Battle Creek, Michigan, with
a 2nd place finish in 1997, and has crewed for 2 world championships. Bill’s most
memorable ballooning event was the 1988 Trans-Australian Challenge -- an 18-day event
that spanned the continent from Perth to Sydney. At a recent safety seminar, noted safety
aeronaut, Dr. Dennis Helmuth, singled out Bill as a role model to other balloonists for his
innovative landing techniques.
Craig and his wife Peggy are back for another year at the Blossom Time Festival. This year
Craig is in charge of the event. He won here in 2007. He has competed at rallies in Ashland,
Ohio, Meadville, Pa., Canton, Ohio and Statesville, NC. Craig is a past-president of the Northeast
Ohio Balloon Pilot’s Association. Craig feels it is a great honor to compete and to have won on
his own turf in Chagrin Falls. Several years ago, during our sponsor flight, Craig enjoyed landing
in his own neighborhood. Having a rally in his hometown gives him the opportunity to share
the experience with many friends in the area. He and his crew are always active participants in
the parade. It is a tradition that makes Chagrin Falls stand out among the other balloon rallies
they attend. He especially enjoys flights that take him over downtown Chagrin. The view is
breathtaking and the sound of the falls can really be heard even way up in the balloon. His goal
this year is to fly safe, have fun, and be as competitive as possible.

Jim became interested in ballooning in 1990, the year he moved to Bainbridge. That Memorial
Day weekend the Blossom Time balloons flew over his home several times. He has been
crewing for Bill Cloninger since 1999 and in 2007 trained for his pilot’s license in the Heber
Valley at the Balloon School in Park City, UT. One of his most memorable flying experiences is
the beauty of that valley at 2000 feet.
Eric’s first trip to the hot air balloon nationals was at the age of 10 months, when he rode
in a cardboard box with his 10 month old cousin in the back of a VW bus. Unfortunately,
you won’t see the VW bus at Blossom Time, as some time later, Paula Wasson, Eric’s mom,
inadvertently set it on fire.
Another memorable experience was flying at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in
2010, 2012, & 2014 with 500 other balloons. He will be flying there again this year. Part of
his joy in ballooning is all the people he can share his sport with. This past winter he shared it
with his wife’s son and his family in the desert area of Ocotillo Wells, CA.
As you can guess, Eric comes from a ballooning family. His father, Terry, was a pilot, and he
taught Paula and Eric, as well as Paula’s brother Chris and friends Craig Lucas and Eugene
Kenyo how to fly. Terry and Paula were also very involved with the Blossom Time Balloon
Festival in the past.
Under the instruction of Bill Cloninger and Ken Kus, Jim received his commercial license in
December of 2011. He moved to the Burton area, near the center of his local flying area, late
in 2012, and has been very busy since retiring in the spring of 2014.
Eric continues to keep it all in the family, since his wife, Sneha, is the crew chief and his sister
Deidre, her husband Brian, and their kids, Jack, Peter, and Drew will be crewing. This year
he again brings his racing balloon to the event.

Chris is no stranger to hot air ballooning. Ever since he was a toddler, Chris has been a
balloon enthusiast. As soon as he was old enough, he started his pilot training under the
instruction of Bill Cloninger. In August of 2003, Chris passed his flight exam and received
his hot air balloon pilot license. He then purchased his first balloon, Sky Berry, in 2005.
Chris has been nick named “Captain Berry” for being the captain of a flying strawberry. His
crew members also have their own berry themed names. Even though Chris flies a giant
strawberry he is actually allergic to them. Did you know the average strawberry has 200
seeds? How many seeds can you count on Sky Berry?

Welcome Gene back to the Blossom Time Balloon Festival. He got his start
in ballooning in 1991 when he began crewing for local pilots, Terry Wasson &
Craig Lucas. He began lessons and received his private pilot license in 2001.
His crew consists of his wife Lauren, daughters Kate and Brooke, and friends
Tim White, Jane Gundlach, and Mark Shaw.

Pat got his start in ballooning crewing for Debby Young. He later received his lessons
from Debby and received his private pilot license in 2001. He’s been flying when
he can, which was hard when you have to borrow a balloon to fly. In 2015 he got
a balloon from Debby Young, and has been flying a little more regularly. His crew
consists of his wife Valeri (Debby’s daughter), and daughters Marissa and Roylynn,
along with others.
Aerostar AX 8
Ken’s interest in balloons began in 1979. Not knowing that morning flight meant sunrise, he
went to a balloon rally, arriving at 9:30 to find all the balloons had already gone. Since then,
he has accumulated over 30 years of ballooning experience and was a commercial pilot for
RE/MAX Realty. He has won several balloon competitions and has flown in Kenya, Africa
with Bob Zanella. He crewed for Mike Emich’s Hydrogen Gas Balloon launch in 1985 and
the Earthwinds attempt in 1992. He has also flown in Mexico and in several events around
Ohio, including two long jumps with a maximum distance of 121 miles. Ken has taught high
school science, worked for Goodyear Aerospace for 25 years, and retired in 1991. He is now
self-employed as ‘Job Jar Man’, doing handyman work of all kinds and flying hot air balloons.
He and his wife Dian are welcomed back to Chagrin again this year.

Ken is a local pilot who has logged over 400 hours as Pilot in Command. He was
the 2000 NOBPA Rookie of the Year and won the NOBPA Club Championship in
2003 & 2008, helped by a win here in 2008. He also enjoyed participating in the
BFA Longjump Competition in 2003 & 2004, flying at altitudes up to 12,500 ft
and covering 188 miles in 4 hours. Ken is self-employed and works as a service
contractor in the northern Ohio area.
Luke received his pilot’s license in August of 2006. Since then he has flown in
a number of balloon events and has over 200 hours as Pilot-in-Command.
ADE RZ7 AX 7
Dan has been flying balloons since 1980 and has logged 1300 hours. He is a
commercial pilot and in the past has flown for Re-Max, car dealerships, and other
businesses. He is also a past NOBPA Board member. A few years ago he had the
opportunity to fly in New Zealand.
His crew chief, Allen Caddell, is also a pilot. His other crew members are his
daughters Annie and Emma. Emma is a pilot as well. Dan, Allen, and Emma built the
balloon Dan is flying for this event.
