In 1848 in what
is now known as
Chagrin
Falls,
Aristarchus Champion built a brick
one-story Greek
revival
building
to be used as a
public library. In
1864, the Chagrin
Falls
Township
Trustees bought
the Library Hall
and converted it
into the Town Hall,
and the building
was
remodeled
into a two-story
Italianate
style
structure in 1875. Henry Church, Jr., who77was the Chagrin Falls blacksmith, created the weathervane that still
resides on top of the roof today.

The north wing was used as the town jail, and the second
story was called The Opera House and used for plays,
lectures, and recitals. The Chagrin Valley Little Theatre
often used The Opera House for its productions until a fire
destroyed the Town Hall in November of 1943. After the
fire, the Town Hall was restored as a one-story Colonial
revival building, and in 1975, the Town Hall was included
in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Town Hall was an important part of the Chagrin Falls
community for 160 years and continues to be vital today.

such as meetings, receptions,
aerobic classes

center

is operated by

Chagrin Falls. The Town Hall will be a staple in the community for years to come.
The early settlers, who came in 1833 predominately from
New England and England, were God-fearing hardworking
people that desired better opportunities for their families.
The natural beauty of the waterfalls and abundant woods
attracted them to the area of Chagrin Falls. In 1844, Chagrin Falls was incorporated, and the waterfalls and dams
were utilized to power factories, mills, and foundries. As
the mill owners prospered, they replaced their early homes
with larger, more impressive ones, and many of the homes
are listed in the Ohio Historic Inventory. To the early residents, education was very important. Classes were held in
private homes until a small
school building was opened
on Main Street. Art was also
valued in the lives of the early
residents, and Chagrin Falls
became known as an art center. The Valley Art Center, the
Chagrin Valley Little Theatre,
and the Chagrin Falls Historical Society all contribute to the
cultural richness of the town
today. Chagrin Falls began as a manufacturing town but
has evolved into a prosperous suburban community.
