Newsletter For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14 Are you getting used to saying “primetime” instead of “Elderlife” yet? I know it’s going to take me a while. Last month, our events taught us a lot about the history of Cleveland. Our first event included a trip to Merwin’s Wharf, where we learned the history of the Flats. It was a beautiful day and we had a great meal. It’s great to see how our city of Cleveland is becoming quite the place to be! At the September’s Federated Forum, we found out at one time, Cleveland was a pretty dangerous place. Rebecca McFarland, a Cleveland historian, gave her presentation on the life and times of Eliot Ness, a noted law enforcement icon. He did so much for Cleveland and it was so sad to find out he died penniless. One another note, remember to check out our Bulletin Board in Fellowship Hall next time you are at Church. Marie Powers and her sister Anita Colitti did their magic again and showed how creative they are. Thank you Marie and Anita! At some of the primetime functions coming up we will have pictures left over from past bulletin boards that you can take home. Thank you to Bill Mason and Claudia O’Brien for taking these great photographs! Better get those walks in before it gets too cold. To stay active in these colder months come join our great crew of walkers out at the Family Life Center weekdays from 8:00 am-9:00 am. It’s a great way to get your day going! God Bless, Dolly Herschel primetime@fed Coordinator The two lovely sisters who decorate our bulletin board: Marie Powers and Anita Colitti. Fall Worship Schedule Federated Church has returned to their regular Sunday schedule and now offers family worship services at 9 am and 11 am. We hope to see you there! 2 October, 2015 ÑÜ|Åxà|ÅxSyxw Newsletter Health & Wellness Initiative by Duncan E. McVean, B.S., R.Ph. M.S., M.B.A., Ph.D Health & Wellness Initiative Chair Last month, I encouraged you to get immunized. Since that time, I learned that my 52 year old daughter who lives in Camus, WA, had recently recovered from Whooping Cough. Yes, she had had Whooping Cough, in spite of the fact that she had been immunized as a child against pertussis. Her physician said that she should have received a booster shot after 30 years. So, I recommend to you that the next time you visit your personal physician you discuss your immunization history and check which ones are now in need of boosters, and which ones require an annual re-immunization. Also, if you haven’t already done so, be sure to get the vaccine for pneumonia (Prevnar 13) and the vaccine for Shingles. - Duncan E. McVean South Africa Trip in November – Are you Interested? Dolly Herschel and Rev. Mark Simone are organizing an adult trip to South Africa. This will be 1/3 mission, 1/3 cultural exchange and education and 1/3 leisure trip. Travel dates are around November 9-21, 2015. We will fly from Cleveland to Cape Town, and do most of our major work in Port Elizabeth. Near Cape Town we will see the wine lands, visit the Cape of Good Hope where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, and go to the Addo Elephant Reserve. We will travel by bus along the Garden Route to Port Elizabeth, one of the most beautiful drives in the world due to the many miles along the Indian Ocean. We will work with the students of the Human Dignity Center and we may be able to build a small house or two. This is an adults-only trip, not a youth trip, open to any Federated member or friend. The approximate cost, inclusive of airfare, will be around $3500. If interested, please contact Mark Simone, Students at the Human Dignity [email protected] or Dolly Herschel at [email protected] or Center in South Africa 440.247.6490. It’s going to be fun! A farewell to friends; May God welcome them with open arms. Recognition of those primetime members who have passed away during September. The Federated Church 440.247.6490 Joan Raymond Phyllis Patton 3 Chagrin Documentary Film Fest Dunham Tavern Wednesday, November 4 — 11:15 am. Friday, October 9 — 11:15 am. Other shorts include: “Culinary Cleveland,” a glance at local food and drink innovations; “Hidden in Plain Sight,” discovering The Cleveland Cultural Gardens; and “100 Years of Sparks - The Story About The American Fireworks Company,” the history of the Sorgi family and the Hudson business they founded in 1902. The festival has been named as one of the top 50 “Film Fests Worth the Entry Fee” by MovieMaker Magazine. After the program, we will walk to Gamekeepers Taverne to enjoy a delicious lunch and dessert. Please join us! NOTE: We will meet at Chagrin Valley Little Theater, NOT the FLC. Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group – 4th Tuesday of the month, 6:30 pm, Bell Street, Lounge Federated is hosting this monthly meeting which is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. The group is designed to provide emotional, educational and social support for caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s. They encourage caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical and emotional health, as well as optimally care for the person with dementia. Drop in to the group or call 1.800.272.3900 for more information. 4 We will travel to Dunham Tavern Museum, the oldest building still standing on its original site in the city of Cleveland. Once a stagecoach stop on the BuffaloCleveland-Detroit post road, the 1824 home of Rufus and Jane Pratt Dunham is now a designated Cleveland Landmark. Additionally, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1974. In stark contrast to the cityscape that surrounds it, the museum and its gardens offer a glimpse of history and insight into the lifestyles of early Ohio settlers and travelers. Cleveland landscape architect, A. Donald Gray purchased the home in 1932 restoring the 19th century architecture and replanting the orchard. Amazingly, this residence has survived through Euclid Avenue’s rise and fall. Stagecoach stops to car dealerships, Millionaire’s Row to urban renewal . . . Dunham Tavern has remained. We’ll stop for lunch at Michaelangelo’s in Little Italy on the way! Where: Dunham Tavern Museum Time: Meet at the FLC for 11:15 am departure. Back at 4:00 pm. Federated Forum Monday, October 12, 2015 Gather at 1:30 pm for refreshments Program at 2:00 pm Bell St., Fellowship Hall Speaker: Jungle Terry Jungle Terry has been educating and entertaining audiences for over 25 years. He and his “friends” will be providing us with an exciting performance at Federated Forum. His “friends” consist of 12-15 animals of all types which he and his children have raised from babies. Jungle Terry has been working with animals all his life and gives performances at special events such as company picnics, parties, and demos at libraries and schools. We will explore the mysteries of the jungles and discover things about the creatures that inhabit them. Learn more about these animals during this hands-on session. Environmentalists all over the world have been working on ways to protect our environment and the animals in it. We need to gain a better understanding of the animal kingdom and of what can be done to help preserve animal life. COME AND JOIN US FOR FUN AS WE GO ON SAFARI! The Federated Church 440.247.6490 Volunteering — By Gloria Terlosky They say love makes the world go around. But I have to add to that statement by saying volunteers keep it moving in the right direction. Companies and organizations could not function as well without their volunteers. They are everywhere, in hospitals, churches, animal rescue, airports, schools, government and assisted living facilities. The list goes on and on. I personality have been a life long volunteer. My volunteering has taken me to battered women shelters, cancer treatment centers, handicapped facilities, animal rescue centers, and churches. For the last ten years I have spent time volunteering at Light of Hearts Villa in Bedford in their Cozy Corner Shop. But this week at Light of Hearts Villa was a little different. All the volunteers at the Villa were treated to a special volunteer appreciation luncheon. After lunch we were asked to go outside and form a line, we were each handed a small triangular shaped box. Inside we were told was a surprise. We were told to make a wish and pull open the tab on the side of the box. As I pulled the tab and the box opened up, a beautiful orange and black monarch butterfly few out and soared above our heads. I can not fully express in words the feelings the other volunteers and I had. Some laughed, some cried, some were amazed. It was breathtaking with a touch of natures magic, full of beauty and grace. Our spirits and emotions along were being carried on those wings. So if you see a monarch butterfly around your yard, their journey (I like to think) started at Light of Hearts Villa where volunteers are shown they are literality and figuratively appreciated in the highest possible regard. If you find yourself feeling a little down and need a purpose or a change in your life, get out there and start volunteering. I guarantee it will change your life for the better and you might just help someone else have a better life as well. Get out of your cocoon and like the butterfly, you will have wings to soar. The sky is the limit! Cozy Corner Shop accepts clean and slightly used donations (household items, clothing, jewelry, books, knickknacks etc.) and sells them to the public. The revenue received from these donated items goes right back into the Villa’s Benevolent Fund for its residents. All donations can be dropped off at the reception desk. The public is always welcome to come and shop. If you have questions, call 440.232.1991. Hope to see you at the Villa! - Councilwoman Gloria Terlosky 5 Ongoing primetime@fed Offerings . . . For hygienic reasons, they are discarded after use so there is always a need for more. The sewing consists of simply closing a seam. The fellowship often includes some yummy treats.
