“Dude, is this heaven?”…… No man, it’s the
Grapefruit League”, like only Clearwater can. The
Philadelphia Phillies have brought the ‘Magic of
Spring’ back to Clearwater. For the 66th consecutive
year, the Phillies bring their bats, balls, stars and
economic impact to the city.
How fortunate we are to have the second longest
spring training relationship with any Major League Baseball team.
Relationships of this nature take a tremendous amount of effort from both
parties. The Phillies organization is the finest in major league baseball. The
City of Clearwater recognizes that and has always respected the opportunity
to partner with them.
The Mayor, City Council, City Manager and City Staff get it. The construction
of Bright House Field in 2004 signaled the start of a new relationship. BHF
replaced the historic Jack Russell Stadium. The field footprint is the same as
Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Mayor Aungst led the effort to build the
new park and has been supported by Mayor Hibbard and our current Mayor
Cretekos. City Manager Bill Horne and the Head of Parks and Recreation,
Kevin Dunbar have worked tirelessly to insure the Phillies have the best Spring
Training experience in MLB.
This year over $2.5 million in upgrades will be completed at Carpenter Field
which adjoins Bright House. That facility is used 12 months per year as the
rehab center for all Phillies ball clubs.
So what is the bottom line to the community? Over $50 million in annual
economic impact to Clearwater. The Phillies’ philanthropy is also felt at a
very high level in the area. Last year over $200,000 in donations and in-kind
services were awarded to not-for-profit organizations. John Timberlake,
Director of Florida Operations for the Phillies, leads the local staff by example
in his involvement with many not-for-profit boards and this year as Chairman
of Clearwater for Youth. His team members follow his lead by also engaging
with many community activities.
DIVISION PARTNERS
Division Partners have made the decision to financially support the Clearwater Regional
Chamber of Commerce by not only being our largest contributors, but also by offering
their time and talent to our many committees and sponsorships. Their value is
immeasurable as they continue to support our community. Their support enables the
Chamber to continually bring quality events, educational opportunities and leadership.

Hidden Treasures of Clearwater
Humane Society of Pinellas County
By Karen Christensen, VP of Membership Relations
This month I
would like to
highlight the
Humane Society
of Pinellas as
being my hidden
treasure. The
organization is outstanding and
goes head and shoulders above
community expectations to make
sure all animals are treated fairly,
humanely and given the loving
care they so deserve. I have gotten
to know Director of Development
Twila Cole over the last several
years. What a dedicated woman
to our animal friends! Twila and
Executive Director Sarah Brown,
and the entire staff of the Humane
Society, have helped animals from
all over the country.
When they are
needed to help
save animals
who have
been hurt or
abandoned the
Humane Society
of Pinellas is
Hello, my name is there at the
“Come and Get Me!” ready to help
heal, rehabilitate and love those in
need - then get them ready for their
new homes with loving families.
As an animal lover I support their
efforts and so does their Chamber
family. When they were recently
violated by a
horrible breakin, the entire
community and
our Chamber
members,

physically. Luckily no animals
were hurt, which is a blessing. The
Chamber asks the Humane Society
every holiday what their needs
might be for the animals so that our
membership can be supportive.
The Humane Society of Pinellas
is an independent, private 501(c)
3, non-profit organization. Their
goal is to keep pets and people
together while helping to end
pet homelessness in Tampa Bay.
Their funding comes from private
donations only. There is no funding
from any government agency or
from HSUS or ASPCA. They offer
a pet pantry, low cost vaccine
clinic, adoption programs (Pets
For Seniors and Pets For Patriots),
foster programs, Spay and Neuter
incentive programs and coming
soon will be a Pet Surrender
Prevention support hotline for all of
Pinellas County residents.
programs. They have served the
Tampa Bay area over the last 12
months with 1496 adopted pets,
927 families who surrendered pets,
818 benefitted from their free clinic
services and 300 families used the
food pantry to feed their pets. This
organization also holds incredible
and fun fundraisers, Holiday Basket
sales, photos with Santa, Mutt
Strut, Bark at the Ball Park, annual
calendar and so much more.
Thank you for serving our
community since 1949!

Upcoming Monthly
Hispanic Business
Connection Events
(Sponsored by the Clearwater Regional Chamber of
Commerce Hispanic Business Council)
Each month the Chamber hosts a Hispanic/Latino
Networking event. The purpose of this event is to reach
out to the Hispanic/Latino market and provide the
opportunity for anyone interested in connecting with
the fast growing bilingual Hispanic/Latino business
community to meet these business professionals.
Business Resources To Help You
Start And Grow Your Business
At the Chamber we do not only provide our
members with several opportunities to meet new
business contacts and referral resources, but we
can provide business assistance to you through our
partnerships with SCORE, WorkNet Pinellas, Small
Business Development Center and Pinellas County
Economic Development.
One of our new members and a first-time
entrepreneur Ronald Gadsden, a retired US Army
veteran recently started his own business, Postal
Annex in Clearwater. Ronald attended classes at the
Small Business Development Center located at the
Pinellas County Economic Development Center that
helped him create a business and development plan,
tax & accounting procedures, and web & social media
marketing. As he was looking to secure a franchise
business they helped him fine-tune his presentations
and also provided space for him to hold these
meetings. Regarding the assistance he received, Ronald
stresses “the center and IT staff were very helpful
and I owe them for giving me my start.” If you need
business assistance please contact me at: cgermer@
clearwaterflorida.org or call 727 461-0011 ext 233.

Several Not-For-Profit organizations were
represented which also provided them an opportunity
to meet each other with the potential to be referral
resources. The feedback from the participants was very
positive as the information presented is a valuable
resource for them.
Look for future upcoming events that will be
geared to Not-For-Profit Organizations.
Thee Photo Ninja
In January the Chamber was involved in two very large events
in the same week: our Annual Dinner Meeting and a Coast
Guard presentation to the City of Clearwater. We received
recognition for being named a ‘Coast Guard City’ – the only city
in Florida and only the 13th in the entire United States.
The Chamber was very fortunate to have the extraordinarily
talented photographer and chamber member Steven Lee of Thee
Photo Ninja at both of these events to capture moments that
will never be duplicated, but in photo memories that will live on.
His creativity, focus and the way he captures a moment is an art.
Please take the time to visit his website at www.theephotoninja.com
and view his photos from both of these events.
Thank you Steve for sharing all
your time and invaluable talents
with the Chamber.

Philadelphia
Phillies Welcomed
Back for Spring
Training
By Kathleen Peters, VP of Public Affairs
The unofficial start of spring came on
Wednesday, February 29 when the boys of
summer returned to Clearwater with the
official start of spring training. At 1:05pm
the first pitch was thrown - surrounded by a
large crowd of fans here to see their favorite
major league team - as the Philadelphia
Phillies played Florida State University.
Phillies’ Utley taking a Swing!

VOICE OF BUSINESS | www.clearwaterflorida.org | MARCH 2012
The atmosphere was filled with elation as America’s
favorite pastime began the new season. Numerous Phillies’ fans
have been hovering around the stadium for weeks now trying to
get a glimpse of their favorite players. After the game,
the Clearwater Regional
Chamber hosted a
reception to welcome the
team back. This event
is always a memberfavorite with opportunities
to network with a
very diverse group of
professionals, as well as
meet the players and club
managers. Spring training
generates a large economic
impact on the City of
Clearwater, Pinellas
County and the State of
Florida. Our hotels and
Beautiful Bright House Field
restaurants are filled
with baseball fans who are thrilled to escape the bitter cold and
winter in their home state and enjoy their favorite pastime in the
glorious Florida weather and backdrop. Phillies Phanatic
Receives Key to
the City
Mayor George N. Creketos gave the
cuddly green monster the key to the City,
Monday, March 5, 2012 at Pier 60. Before
accepting the key, the Phanatic made a stop
at the Marine Museum to visit “Winter,”
the famous Dolphin and star of the Disney
movie “Dolphin Tale.” On March 4, the
Phanatic made stops at famed breakfast
spot Lenny’s, took a stroll down the beach,
took a ride on the Jolly Trolley, and rode a
Segway down Mandalay Avenue.
We welcome back the Phillies and encourage you to enjoy
the team at the beautiful Bright House Networks Park during
this great 2012 spring training season. Capacity crowd enjoying the Action!

Your Bank Account
Emptied By Cyber
Thieves
Marcy and Scott Daniels –
Successfully Selling in Today’s
Challenging Market
by
By Cathy Germer, VP Business Development Membership Advisor
You own your own business. You worked
hard to build it up. It’s your life to a large
extent, and you spend well over 40 hours a week
building it. Your employees are often like family
(for better or for worse!) They count on you to
be their ‘fearless leader’ in many instances. Over
time you have put enough money aside so that
you have a buffer when times get bad. It sits
in your corporate savings account over at the
bank. You think it is safe. Think again.
Recently chamber member Marcy Daniels of Coldwell Banker
was awarded Top Agent for Coldwell Banker Residential Real
Estate’s Clearwater & Clearwater Beach offices. This is the 11th
year she has received this award. She is also included among the
top Relators in her company’s ‘Top 100 in Florida’ for 2011.
First of all, your corporate money is NOT
INSURED by the FDIC against fraud. Your
personal accounts are, but business accounts
are not insured, except for one bank: JP Morgan
Chase. Every other bank, if cyber thieves hack
into your network, take over your bank account,
and transfer money out of the country, you
are NOT INSURED. Call your bank; they will
reluctantly acknowledge this fact. They are
working on additional cyber defenses, but at the
moment this is the situation.
Now, cybercrime has gone ‘pro’ in the last
5 years. They have lots of resources, lots of
smart people, and they hack into businesses
like yours all day long, using your employees
to get in. How? It’s called ‘social engineering’
which means manipulating someone to divulge
confidential information. Getting a password
out of someone can take just 3 minutes over the
phone, or 3 seconds if an employee clicks on a
phishing email.
Apart from all the IT security measures
your organization has taken, you need one
more additional security layer: People. Your
employees are in urgent need to get trained
so they don’t fall for these scams. Extremely
affordable and something you cannot do
without. It’s called Security Awareness Training,
and every organization needs to do it. KnowBe4
tests your employees for free, so you know up
front the percentage that is vulnerable. The first
thing we recommend is the free Email Exposure
Checks that shows you how many of your emails
are out there on the internet, available for the
bad guys to attack your employees. Go to www.knowbe4.com and fill out the
free Email Exposure Check form.
