EXCHANGE
The Exchange is Headed to
the Cornhusker State!
When you think of Omaha, Nebraska, you might think of superb steak, Warren Buffett or
even the College World Series. Those are all admirable characteristics of this Heartland city,
but next February, you are also invited to think of Omaha as a place where you can network
with the largest group of peers, specialists and suppliers in the grain industry.
Exchange 2014, Feb. 22-25 in Omaha is the place to do all of these things. Join GEAPS as
the industry comes together for this
special annual event that can’t be
experienced anywhere else.
It’s a chance to see the industry’s
biggest selection of products and
services, and to further your career
by attending premier education
sessions.
In the following pages, you will
find details about the upcoming
Exchange, including the Opening
Workshop, Sponsorship Program
opportunities and the Expo Hall.
Although the Exchange host
hotel and additional room blocks are
currently sold-out, visit the GEAPS
website for information on other convenient room reservation options.
Food Safety Modernization Act Chosen as
Exchange 2014 Opening Workshop Topic
How does the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) affect your facility, your customers
and the industry at large? Get the answers to these questions and more at the Exchange 2014
Opening Workshop, Sunday, Feb. 23 from 7-10 a.m. in Omaha.
John Mueller, Food Protection Services; David Fairfield, NGFA; and Dr. Angela Shaw,
Iowa State University will present on what is considered the most significant change to food
safety in the United States since the late 1930s. The workshop will include an overview of
FSMA history, followed by presentations by John Mueller and Dr. Shaw.
The Opening Workshop is the annual kickoff
of the Exchange education program and often
one of the most well-attended events of the
show.
To ensure the workshop covers what
attendees want to know about FSMA,
we will be sending out a survey in
November to find out which issues you
would like to see discussed.
All registered delegates to the
Exchange are welcome to attend the
program without extra charge.

EDUCATION
Registration Open Nov. 18 for Preventive Maintenance, Grain
Inspection and Grain Quality Management Courses
Registration opens Nov. 18 for three
GEAPS/Kansas State University distance education courses that begin Jan. 6.
New for 2014, GEAPS 555: Advanced and
Preventive Maintenance for Grain Facilities:
Conveyance Equipment is an advanced
course intended for professionals with prior
experience in grain elevator equipment main-
tenance and those who have completed GEAPS
554: Equipment Maintenance I. Topics include
developing and implementing a preventive
maintenance program; bucket elevator repair
and upkeep for both lower and upper systems;
repair and upkeep of belt, pneumatic, chain
and screw conveyors; conveyance equipment
lubrication; and effective hazard monitoring.
GEAPS 522: FGIS Grain Inspection
Orientation introduces the basics of grain
inspection. Specially developed by the USDA’s
Federal Grain Inspection Service in conjunction with GEAPS and Kansas State University,
it provides participants with a history of
grain inspection and an overview of general
inspection techniques. The lectures will cover
grain marketing and production, the U.S. Grain
Standards Act and other legislation, grain
inspection (including a video inspection-lab
tour), grain quality factors, sampling and the
official weighing program. GEAPS 522 is a
component of the Specialist Credential in Grain
Quality Management.
Updated in early 2013, GEAPS 520: Grain
Quality Management is one of the six courses
required for the Credential in Grain Operations
Management (CGOM). The course examines
the proper methods to manage and maintain
the quality of grains and oilseeds. Students
will learn how to determine the quality and
purity of grains; measure and control moisture
content; select and properly use fans; and pest
control strategies for stored grain. GEAPS 520
is designed for grain elevator professionals
responsible for assessing, managing and maintaining grain quality, including those involved
with storing and conditioning, aeration, drying,
pest control and mycotoxin management.

closes Dec. 17. For more information about the

Volume Discounts Accelerate Learning,
Save Companies Money
In June, GEAPS began offering volume
discounts on GEAPS/K-State distance education courses to companies looking to efficiently
train large groups of grain operations staff in
industry best practices. The new initiative is
proving valuable for companies of all sizes.
Volume discounts for courses are available
in coupon blocks of three sizes. As the size of
the coupon block increases, so do the savings.
“We use the volume discount program to
bring staff to a new level of understanding and
expertise more quickly than would ordinarily
be the case as there are always budgetary
restraints on any aspect of business including training,” said Jim McKerchar, Parrish &
Heimbecker, Ltd.
Volume discounts also help companies
encourage more employees to pursue continuing education and earn their Credential
in Grain Operations Management (CGOM).
“Without it we would have signed up two
to three employees. With volume discounts,
we are putting 11 employees through the
8 – GEAPS In-Grain | November 2013
Credentialing Program,” said Jay Sturtz, a
regional operations manager at Farmers
Cooperative Co.
Pete Mutschler, director of environmental health and safety at CHS, Inc., said the
discounts help him administratively as well. “I
would recommend the coupon idea as a means
of controlling the process and the discount as
a means to encourage participation,” he said.
“The training is tremendously valuable
and delivered in a manner that makes the
system extremely flexible to the student. The
bulk discount allows us to encourage more
employees to participate and get them in the
door. By showing them the advantage of being
in a group, I am able to get more cooperation
from the employees and thus track their
participation,” Mutschler added.
To learn more about volume discounts,
including usage policies, or purchase a coupon
block for your company, contact Rose Miller
at [email protected] or (952) 928-4640. We use the volume
discount program to
bring staff to a new
level of understanding
and expertise more
quickly than would
ordinarily be the case

appreciation night that was complete with
networking opportunities and fun.
The chapter also held a meeting on Oct.
10 at the Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI) in Winnipeg. Dean Diaz, CIGI, gave

included a look at the flour mill, bakery, pasta
plant, malt plant and brewery.

Brighten a Chapter Member’s Day: Show Your
Appreciation for Their Volunteer Service
If you’re a chapter leader, take a moment
to recognize your outstanding volunteers
through two special programs. The Membership Pin Program rewards longstanding GEAPS
members for their loyalty to your chapter.
Members who demonstrate above and beyond
service to the chapter can receive the Chapter
Member of Distinction Award.
Each chapter received information about
participating in these programs in October and
November via email.
Membership Pin Program
Show your appreciation for members
who have devoted their time to your GEAPS
chapter. The GEAPS Membership Pin Program
has 5, 10, 15, and 20 year pins available that
you can give to the special volunteers in your
chapter to thank them for their commitment to
GEAPS. Some chapters give membership pins
to chapter members at their annual holiday
party. Be sure to order now to get them in time.
Please note that only members who
qualify for their respective pin during the
current membership year can receive them.
Membership years are calculated by consecu-
tive years, not by total years. If your chapter
wishes to order membership pins or to receive
a list of those who are eligible this year, please
contact Sam Kukowski at [email protected] or
(952) 928-4640.
Chapter Member of Distinction Award
Nominate the outstanding volunteers in
your chapter to receive the Chapter Member
of Distinction Award. This award is given at
the Exchange to members who have provided extraordinary leadership or service to
their chapters.
To qualify, the member must have provided contributions to excellence in chaptermeeting programming, made achievements in
promoting meetings and in fostering member
participation at meetings or made significant
gains in recruitment of new chapter members.
To nominate a chapter member, complete the
nomination form that was sent to all chapter
leaders in October and submit it to the GEAPS
office by December 31, 2013 at: GEAPS, 4248
Park Glen Rd, Minneapolis, MN 55416; [email protected]; fax (952) 929-1318.
SAFETY AWARDS
Pledge to Keep Your Facility Safe in 2014
with the Safety Awards Program
GEAPS knows how much work, knowledge and skill it takes to keep your facility and
employees safe on the job. For over 30 years,
we have honored facilities with verifiable
records of safety achievement through the
Safety Awards. Take the pledge to reward
your employees’ hard work at keeping their
facility and industry safe this year: enroll your
company in the 2014 Safety Awards Program.
When your facility enrolls in the Safety
Awards Program, you are letting everyone
know how much you value a top-notch, safe
facility. Not only do you honor the employees
who kept your safety program operational
throughout the year; you show the whole
industry that your facility is safe.
Safety Awards are given out annually
at the Exchange. Winners for 2014 will be
honored at the 2015 Exchange in St. Louis,
Mo., Feb. 23-26. The results will be announced
in this publication and posted on the GEAPS
website for the year. Each winning facility will
www.geaps.com
also receive a plaque showcasing their dedication to safety for the 2014 year.
To enroll your facility, complete the application form found on the GEAPS website and
fax, e-mail or mail it back to the GEAPS office
with the appropriate enrollment fee by Dec. 31.
The fee is $95 for facilities employing a GEAPS
member and $140 for non-member facilities.
If you are in the grain industry, but do not
operate a storage facility, you may still apply.
The program is also for suppliers, engineers
and millwrights.
Recognize achievement at your facility
and help GEAPS carry on the grain industry’s
exceptional record of safety. Enroll today!
GO GREEN: GEAPS also offers a more
environmentally friendly award. This certificate-only option is a great way to save on our
natural resources. To participate simply select
