MEET THE KC COACHES
ZACH LOLL
Athletic Director & Women’s
head Basketball Coach
"Kaskaskia College is proud of our student athletes' success both
academically and athletically. This past year we had three teams
named NJCAA Academic All-American teams – Baseball,
Volleyball, & Women's Golf. We also had several individuals
named as Academic All-Americans.
I am excited for the 2008-2009 basketball season. Each team has the competitive spirit it takes to be
successful in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and Region 24. We have high expectations of our young
athletes. We expect them to have success not only athletically, but also success as students. We strive for
academic excellence with all of our athletes. The athletic department is striving to improve daily. We are eagerly looking to
the future to build the athletic department and make it a “class act”. We are glad to have you at the game and hope you will
return.”
In his seventh season, Loll led the Blue Angels to a 16-14 record. “I will
look to improve on last year. I am looking for the returning sophomores
to provide leadership to the freshmen class. We look forward to the
challenging schedule ahead of us especially in the Great Rivers Athletic
Conference and the culmination of the season at the Region XXIV
Tournament.”
“After spending two years at Southwestern Illinois College and working
with NJCAA Hall of Fame coach, Jay Harrington, I hope I can take the
knowledge from him and make our athletic department one of the
nations finest. In my years as an assistant, I have had the pleasure of
working with several outstanding coaches including: Mike Juenger,
Head Women’s Coach Southwestern Illinois College, Todd Sturgeon,
Head Men’s Coach University of Indianapolis, and Jim Dudley, Head
Men’s Coach Lake Land College.”
Loll also played for NJCAA Hall of Fame coach John Spezia. Spezia is
the former Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at
Danville Area Community College. Since retiring from DACC, Spezia
has spent time at Scottsdale Community College as an assistant coach.
He is also an active member of the NJCAA basketball coaches
association. Late this past summer Coach Spezia accepted the Head
Men’s Basketball Coaching position at New Mexico Military Institute in
Roswell, NM.
“I often draw upon the experiences as a player and assistant with this
outstanding group of coaches. Loll graduated from Danville Area
Community College with is associate’s of science degree. I then
transferred to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and
graduated with a B.S. in Kinesiology. Then I went on to Eastern Illinois
University to begin my graduate degree and my collegiate coaching path
as an assistant at Lake Land College.
I would like to personally, thank you for your attendance and support of
the Blue Angels and Blue Devils. We look forward to your continued
support and attendance at sporting events for all the teams.”
Loll resides in Centralia with his wife Andrea and twin sons Blain and
Cooper.

University in St. Joseph, Missouri in 2004.
KASKASKIA COLLEGE INDUCTS NEW CLASS
CENTRALIA - The 2008 individual inductees of the Kaskaskia
College Athletic Hall of Fame all brought something different to the
table. One was a pioneer in helping the school get women’s sports
under way. Another went on to receive a doctorate in psychology.
One returned to Centralia to launch a highly successful coaching
career. Another chronicled KC athletic activities for years as a
member of the local media and later was an instructor at the school.
The team that was recognized recently was - the first at Kaskaskia
since 2001 - brought acclaim to the college by setting records at the
national level. “It’s exciting to get the Hall of Fame going again and
to recognize people that have made contributions to the athletic
programs at the college,” said KC athletic director Zach Loll. “It’s an
outstanding group of Inductees joining another outstanding group
already in the Hall.”
This year’s inductees are the late Mary Ann Bohbrink, Dr. Shelvy
Haywood Keglar, Craig Freels, Bill Niepoetter and the 1963-64 Blue
Devils basketball team.
Mary Ann Bohbrink: Women’s athletics programs as a whole were in
their infancy when Bohbrink coached Kaskaskia’s volleyball and
softball squads in their initial season of competition in 1975. A year
later, she also became coach of the Blue Angels basketball squad.
“She was very good at getting us to work together and have fun,” said
Becky Wessel of Carlyle, who, along with Stephanie Fahrner and
Cathy Lambdin - all members of Bohbrink’s first teams at the college
- accepted the Hall of Fame plaque on her behalf. “We all came from
different high schools and didn’t know each other very well. But we
became close as a team, and a lot of that was due to her.” While
Kaskaskia currently offers basketball, golf and soccer as women’s
sports with tennis and cross country to possibly be added in the
future, none of it could be possible without the contributions of
someone such as Bohbrink. “It’s neat to see how much it [women’s
athletics] has grown,” said Wessel. “It would have been fun to have
all that when we played, but we’re still glad we had an opportunity
to participate. “As a student worker for her [Bohbrink], I know she
was very serious about getting equality for our programs.”
Dr. Shelvy Haywood Keglar: An All-Southern Illinois College
Conference in basketball both seasons at Kaskaskia, which he
attended from 1966-69, Keglar was also named team captain as a
freshman and sophomore while also garnering all-state honors in
leading the squad in scoring, rebounding and assists. “Shelvy led not
just by talking but by example. He was a winner,” said former KC
coach Chuck Mundell. “He was a hard worker.” After helping lead
the Blue Devils to third and fourth places in state, Keglar continued
his basketball career at Arkansas State University as the team’s
captain, where he later served as freshman coach and graduate
assistant before going into the service, where he earned All-Army
honors and was player/coach for the Fort Sam Houston Rangers.
After tryouts with the San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers, he
completed his doctorate and founded the Midwest Psychological
Center in Indianapolis, where he became president and director.
“Kaskaskia College was a conduit for me,” said Keglar, a graduate of
Centralia High School. “It was my connection to the real world.” A
son, Stanford Keglar, was a fourth-round draft choice of the NFL’s
Tennessee Titans after starring at Purdue and now plays linebacker
for the Titans.
Craig Freels: Former Kaskaskia tennis coach Jim McKee remembered
the first time he saw Freels - long before the Centralia High graduate
became a standout for the Blue Devils. “He and Nancee Weigel (a
future professional) would always be at the courts at Fairview Park,
constantly working on their strokes,” said McKee. “Craig was just a
very good all-round player.“He could serve well and had great court
sense. He knew where to be at all times and was also very good at
returning serves.” Teaming with Kenny Abrams to form a potent
doubles combination during the 1971 season, the pair qualified for the
National Junior College Athletic Association finals at Ocala, Fla., and
were consolation champions. Along the way, the duo won the Region
IV tourney, which at the time included the entire state as well as
part of Indiana. Freels went to star at Eastern Illinois University and
came back to his hometown as a teacher and coach. Next spring, he’ll
be in his 31st season as head coach of the CHS boys tennis team.
“There’s no better feeling than to have a kid come up to you and say
‘Hey, coach ...,’” said Freels.
Bill Niepoetter: In 1957 he became sports editor of the Sentinel and
held the position for 22 years, during which time he covered
countless sporting events at the college. One of the highlights was
following the 1963-64 Blue Devils, whose rapid pace of play and
high-point totals made them a fan favorite. “The one thing I really
remember is the one when I took a picture of the scoreboard at the
end of a game,” said Niepoetter. “It looked as though it had ended in
a tie - but Centralia Junior College, the forerunner of Kaskaskia] had
scored an even 100 points more than the other team. “To this day, I
still think about how incredible that was.” A graduate of Sandoval
High School and former professional baseball player, Niepoetter is
also a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame and
the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame as a journalist, the Nokomis
Baseball Hall of Fame as a player, and the Clinton County Baseball
League Hall of Fame as an umpire. He also served as president of the
Illinois Associated Press Sports Editors Association and formerly was
a journalism instructor at KC.
1963-64 Blue Devils: Coached by Chuck Mundell and led by the
nation’s top scorer in Russell Coleman, the Blue Devils - composed
primarily of local players - went 28-3 and finished eighth in the
NJCAA national tourney at Hutchinson, Kansas. While averaging 118
points a game during the regular season, the Blue Devils generated
much of that offense from their defense. “They were not only my best
offensive team but my best defensive team,” said Mundell. “We
weren’t very big, so we knew we were going to have to be able to
press, and shoot the ball, and we worked on that.” “I received a lot of
honors and recognition,” said Coleman, who was an NJCAA AllAmerican that season. “But I couldn’t have done any
of it without these guys [his teammates]. We were a team.” The
roster also featured Jerry Hampleman, Maylee Vaughn, Darrell Stein,
Don Duncan, Dan Ferrari, Don Bates, Wes Killion, Dave White, Skip
Heinrichsmeyer, Tilford Hord, Jim Fletcher, Joe Stark, Paul Downey
and Dave Bollinger.

As the Kaskaskia College Sports & Wellness Campaign continues
to raise funds to support athletic programs at KC, a new men’s
soccer program as well as, tennis and cross country programs will
be added venues for athletics.
The new women’s soccer program began this Fall. Coach Joe
Basch has been successful in molding this group of athletes into a
competitive team. Kaskaskia College looks for the women’s
program to grow and compete as the program moves forward.
Men’s soccer will begin in the
Fall of 2009 with newly hired coach
Bernie Johnson of Centralia.
Johnson graduated from Mater Dei
High School in 1982. He then went
to Belleville Area College and played
one year of baseball before
transferring to Kaskaskia to finish
his junior college baseball career. He
is also a graduate of Kaskaskia.
Johnson’s soccer experience is vast
as he started a high school club
soccer team in Centralia in 1991 and
coached there for 3 years. He later
started the Centralia High School
Program as he served a varsity head
coach for one year. Johnson then
served as an assistant coach for the varsity squad at Mater Dei High
School and later was named head coach at Carlyle High School. He
is currently the head coach for the Salem High School varsity
soccer team as they begin their inaugural season. Johnson has also
coached junior high club teams in Centralia for nearly seven years
and was one of the original activists who began the Little Egypt
Soccer Club in Centralia and U18 head coach for the last three
years for their club program. Johnson is excited for the
opportunity to coach at the collegiate level. “I am ready to begin
recruiting for the Fall 2009 team and getting the KC Program off to
a good start. I am honored to get the opportunity to coach soccer
at Kaskaskia College and to be part of starting a brand new men’s
team.”
Along with the addition of men’s soccer, KC has also begun
construction on a new state of the art soccer field that will be used
by the teams for competition beginning the Fall of 2009. According
to KC Athletic Director, Zach Loll, “Kaskaskia College believes
that soccer will be a great addition to the athletic department and
the growth of the college. Soccer is a growing sport not only
among high school athletes, but also at younger ages.”
Kaskaskia College has been fortunate to have a privately
owned group, Prairie Creek Apartments LLC, build new
apartments across the street from the college has been a great
addition for KC student athletes. This housing allows students
easy access to the college for classes, academic assistance, and
practice sessions. The developers look to expand the project in the
future to accommodate even more students from Kaskaskia
College. It will be a partnership that will be a great addition to the
expansion of KC being a comprehensive college. For more
information, please call 618-532-4138.
Kim Potthast has now completed
her first season as head coach of the
Kaskaskia College Blue Angels Volleyball
Program and in her first season, the team
finished 18-19. This is one of the most
successful seasons for KC in over 15 years.
Kim is now in the process of recruiting
her first class for the 2009-2010 season.
The Kaskaskia College Blue Angels Softball Team is looking
forward to a very exciting year. Coming off a 17-26 record from last
year, the Blue Angels are looking to compete at the top of the Great
Rivers Athletic Conference in 2009. The Blue Angels lost seven
players due to graduation last year, but have a strong returning
sophomore class of four starters and one non-starter. The Blue
Angels have 12 talented and hardworking freshmen that will step
up and compete at the highest level. It will be an exciting year for
the Kaskaskia College Blue Angels softball team.
The KC Blue Devils will start the 2009 season under new interim
head coach Mitch Koester who feels the strength of this year’s team
will be their depth and experience. The Blue Devils have several
players who can play multiple positions and help accrue win.
Returning pitchers Logan Mahon, Stephen Hefler and Scott
Pedersen all had great years as freshman and Coach Koester is
looking to them for a strong spring season. Sophomores Wade
Koester, Wes O'Neill and Dillan York each return on the infield and
the experience of playing every day last year will only make them
better. Sophomores Bo Kinder and Dayton Spears return in the
outfield to add even more experience. These sophomores along with
a freshman class that has a lot of talent should add depth and
compete in the GRAC.

FORMER STUDENT ATHLETE CREDIT SUCCESS WITH KC
Lance Rabenort graduated from Okawville High School in 2004 and began taking
classes at Kaskaskia College in August of 2004 when he received an Academic
Scholarship. While at Kaskaskia, he was a member of the Blue Devils basketball
team and was also involved with Academic Leaders as well as assisting in several
community service activities as a volunteer through KC athletics.
“I chose to attend Kaskaskia College for several reasons. First of all, I wasn't sure
what I wanted to pursue professionally. KC gave me a solid foundation
academically along with time to change my major to Business. Kaskaskia also gave
me the opportunity to play two more years of basketball. I had the opportunity to
play with and against some great players and made some great memories.”
“My experience at Kaskaskia was so positive due to the people that I was
surrounded with. I had great coaches, teachers, teammates, and friends who truly
cared about my achievements while in college. Lance graduated from Kaskaskia
College in 2006 and transferred to the University of Illinois where he graduated
two years later with a degree in Business Finance.
Lance agrees that Kaskaskia College gives students out of high school a great opportunity to make a smooth
transition into the college venue. “I loved my two years at the University of Illinois, but the size of many of these four
year schools cannot match the personal feeling one receives at Kaskaskia. While at KC I had two more years to
mature, figure out my educational path, and I also had a great time playing basketball two more years.”
Lance currently has an entry level position at a consulting and auditing firm for community banks in the St. Louis
area. “KC helped me prepare for my current job by giving me a well rounded business background. I took several
accounting, economic, and math classes that help me to this day.” Lance’s mother, Donna (Reichmann) also attended
KC as well as his cousin Shane Schuessler who also played basketball at KC. According to Lance, “We are all proud
to say we are alumni of Kaskaskia College.”
PROUD ALUMNI OF KASKASKIA COLLEGE
When Cindy (Hanke) Hoffmann graduated from Carlyle High School in 1991 and began her
college career in August of that same year at Kaskaskia College, little did she know that her
path would remain at Kaskaskia. Cindy attended KC on a basketball scholarship and began
her education and career in Radiology.
“I was raised on a farm a few miles north of Kaskaskia College. My father, Roger Hanke,
brought me to a few basketball games over my childhood years because he enjoyed watching
the collegiate games and local players continuing their basketball careers.” Hoffmann adds
that during her senior year in high school, she was contacted by former KC’s women’s
basketball Coach Marialice Jenkins about continuing to play college ball at KC. She adds
that she was impressed by Coach Jenkins and was excited about the opportunities Kaskaskia
had to offer.
“The entire two years I spent at Kaskaskia College was a positive experience. I had so many different experiences
between classmates in the radiology program, radiographers at the clinical affiliations, teammates, and Coach
Jenkins. All the experiences have had an impact on my life and have provided me with great opportunities. Playing
basketball at the collegiate level was an opportunity I was not willing to pass, especially since I was able to have a
scholarship to pay for my education. This was an opportunity for me to receive an Associate in Applied Science
Degree and be able to find employment in the medical field as a radiographer after two years.”
Hoffmann graduated in 1993 from the KC Radiology Program. As a student she also had the opportunity to be a
member of the Radiology Club and was also a student worker. She is currently the Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Program Coordinator at KC and has now been a member of the KC staff for 12 years. She is also proud to say that
her sister Caroline Tate, brother Tim Hanke, and husband Steve Hoffmann are all KC graduates.
Hoffmann adds that completing an A.A.S degree in Radiologic
Technology from KC prepared her for employment at St. Anthony’s
Hospital in Effingham. While at Effingham, she was asked to attend a
three month Sonography course in Mobile, AL. She adds, “Starting as a
radiographer was just the beginning step that eventually led to having
the opportunity to learn Sonography.”
While working part-time for KC in the Radiology Technology Program
as a lab and film critique instructor she went back to school to obtain
her Bachelor of Science Degree in Workforce Education and
Development from SIU-C. “I began seeing the need for Sonography
instruction in our rural area and the radiology program director and I researched the need for a Sonography
program in our area and in 2000 the first one-year certificate program began.”
“KC has provided me with opportunities I never could have imagined when I walked through the gymnasium in a
cap and gown in 1993. As a faculty member and past graduate of KC I feel it is a vital organization within the
community in which it serves. KC has made several changes in many aspects of the college setting. The addition of
the Health Professions & Career Building, the Life Long Learning Center, The Sports and Wellness Campaign, the
establishment of the Kaskaskia College Sports Association are only a few of the changes occurring to enrich the
community and the value of education in which it provides.
Hoffmann has also obtained her Master of Science in Education Degree. “Kaskaskia College was my beginning and
prepared me for all the opportunities which presented over the past fifteen years. I am very proud to say I am an
alumni of Kaskaskia College.”

KASKASKIA COLLEGE SPORTS ASSOCIATION
KASKASKIA COLLEGE SPORTS ASSOCIATION
The Kaskaskia College Sports Association was established in July of 2003 to help support the Kaskaskia College Athletic Department. The
goal of the Sports Association is for all student athletes to reach their potential both academically and athletically. The Kaskaskia College
Sports Association serves as the fundraising arm for the KC Department of Athletics. This association dedicates itself to building friends and
helping to support athletic scholarships; new, improved, and expanded athletic facility needs; and to assist the athletic department to achieve
excellence.
The Sports Association plans to increase community awareness of the outstanding student-athlete successes, improve the relations between
the KC Athletic Department and the community with which the college interacts and to provide the support which will ensure the high
quality and future growth of the Athletic Program.
Since its existence in 2003, the KCSA has raised nearly $250,000 through membership drives and fundraisers. It has successfully attained
over 25 corporate sponsors and 250 memberships annually.
SPORTS & WELLNESS COMPLEX
The purpose of the Kaskaskia College Sports and Wellness Complex Campaign is to provide the students and citizens within Kaskaskia
College's District with a high quality recreational facility that will provide new and diverse recreational opportunities for residents within
District 501.
The College is committed to providing facilities that are functional and attractive to potential students and offer the best opportunity for
success. Providing competitive facilities is key to recruiting the best student-athletes to be part of the College’s intercollegiate athletic
program. Instructional programs will also benefit from this complex, including physical education and wellness classes for both credit and
non-credit offerings. This complex will provide enhanced recruitment opportunities through camps for children and teens. It will ultimately
be a tremendous asset within the College District by offering public and private recreational events, thereby providing a quality complex for
many groups.
There are many ways that you can get involved in KC Athletics through the KCSA and the Sports and Wellness Complex. For more
information, please call Cathy Karrick at 618.545.3182 or email [email protected].
