A twirl, a
shine...moustache magic
in Bollywood
Though
actors have
preferred to look
clean-shaven and groomed,
these days Bollywood heroes
are trying to change the norm
and have been seen
sporting moustache for
their roles
PRIYANKA SHARMA
IANS
HE power of the moustache
is in full flow in Bollywood.
Screen idols are banking on
it to look different on screen
- if Saif Ali Khan has gone
for the zappa, Aamir Khan boasts of
the chevron and Shahid Kapoor the
painter’s brush.
When Salman Khan was seen as
funny cop Chulbul Pandey, sporting a
pencil moustache in the super duper
hit Dabangg, his fans went crazy,
especially those from Uttar Pradesh
where the movie was set.
Another popular actor to be seen on
screen with a moustache is Abhishek
Bachchan in Dum
Maro Dum.
Director
R o h a n
Sippy, who
keeps changing
his facial hairstyle
in real life, has
cast the actor as a
cop in this suspense
thriller that will hit the
theatres on April 22.
Abhishek, who usually has a stubble, sports
a moustache in the movie
to look like a real cop.
Aamir is also taking the
trend forward with his bowshaped chevron on his upper
lip for Reema Kagti’s second
directorial venture.
Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist,
who tries to look different in all his
films, whether it was Dhobi Ghat,
Ghajini or Taare Zameen Par, had
earlier grown a moustache for the
period film Mangal Pandey, but it
failed to impress. So far his new look
for Kagti’s suspense thriller has no
doubt created a buzz.
T
Aamir
Khan
Another Khan, Saif Ali Khan, has
also joined the bandwagon for his role
of a teacher in Prakash Jha’s issuedbased Aarakshan.
“A lot of men do. If you think of a
teacher in a rural town, they have a
moustache. Most Indians would have
it. So it was a demand for the character
and I had to wear it,” Saif, who dons a
similar look in his home production
Agent Vinod, said.
After the stupendous success of
comic caper Yamla Pagla Deewana,
Sunny Doel has turned serious for his
next Mohalla Assi that will see him as
a pandit in dhoti-kurta, moustache
and a small ponytail.
Even Om Puri will be seen with one
in his upcoming film Teen Thay Bhai.
Known for his offbeat roles, Rahul
Bose has also grown a moustache for
an untitled film, which he says “cannot
be named”.
After finishing the shoot, the
actor took to microblogging site
Twitter to talk about it, saying, “My
last day of shoot. Then this moustache comes off. Children can come
out from under their beds. Fervent
pleas from friends to keep the moustache. I was very touched till they
explained it made them look irresistible in comparison.”
Shahid will be seen with a
thick ‘painter’s brush’ for his dad’s
directorial debut Mausam where he is
seen as a pilot.
Neil Nitin Mukesh of Johnny
Gaddar fame, who sports a stubble in
real life, was seen wearing a moustache as an army major in Vishal
Bharadwaj’s 7 Khoon Maaf.
“I really liked my look in 7 Khoon
Maa’, it’s very interesting and different. This is the first time I ever sported
a moustache and I really like it. It was
inspired by my uncle (chacha)
Mohnish Mukesh,” Neil said.
It took almost a year for Vivek
Oberoi to grow a thick moustache for his role in Ram Gopal
Varma’s Rakta Charitra.
Yesteryear dancing star Rishi
Kapoor, who in his heyday preferred a clean shaven look, went
for a complete makeover for Do
Dooni Chaar. He played a middle-class man in the film, and
his role of a teacher required
him to sport a moustache. And
he did so.
In fact Bollywood superstar
Shah Rukh Khan, mostly
clean shaven for his romantic
roles, wore a moustache in
Amol Palekar’s Paheli and
Yash Raj Films’ Rab Ne
Bana Di Jodi.
To make his character more effective in
Omkara, Aakrosh and
Once Upon A Time In
Mumbaai, Ajay Devgn
went for different facial hairstyles for the respective roles
of a criminal, police officer and
underworld don.
Heartthrob Hrithik Roshan
looked elegant with a moustache in historical drama
Joddha Akbar, which also got
him the best actor award.
Action star Akshay Kumar was
first seen with a moustache in
Jaanwar and again in Chandni
Chowk to China.
In the black and white era, some
top notch actors like Guru Dutt, Raj
Kapoor and Pradeep Kumar sported
a moustache. In the 1980s,
Shatrughan Sinha and Randhir
Kapoor had one. But by and large,
the new crop of actors, especially
those in romantic roles, have preferred the clean shaven look.
Now, with the new trend, are Jackie
Shroff and Anil Kapoor twirling their
long kept moustaches in delight?
From left: Vivek Oberoi in Rakht Charitra; Aamir Khan in Mangal Pandey; Shahid Kapoor in Mausam ; Hrithik Roshan in Joddha Akbar and Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Fearsome fangs for a plant eater
Science
guide
RESEARCHERS in Brazil have discovered a 260-million-year-old fossil species with a fearsome array of peculiar teeth: a
set running down the middle of its mouth, and ferocious canines that were never used to eat flesh. The new species, is
a member of the extinct group of mammal-like reptiles called therapsids, the most abundant four-footed species during
the Permian period. The paleontologists who found it in southern Brazil, near the borders of Argentina and Uruguay, are
calling it Tiarajudens eccentricus; their find is described in the current issue of the journal Science. The short-snouted
species also had top and bottom teeth that fitted together, as human teeth do, allowing it chew with ease. Tiarajudens
was herbivorous, and the researchers suspect that its long canines — similar to those of a saber-toothed cat — may
have been used to ward off predators, or by males to fight members of the same species. Male musk deer have similar
canines, Dr Cisneros said. “That’s something we thought modern herbivores invented, so it’s interesting that in this
ancient time, we already had these strategies.”
A race against time
to save ‘oiled’ penguins

R
ESPONDERS to a shipwreck
and oil spill off a remote South
Atlantic archipelago are in a
“race against time” to save
thousands of endangered
penguins that have been coated in crude,
local officials said.
Hundreds of oiled-soaked rockhopper
penguins have been recovered from
Nightingale Island, part of the Tristan da
Cunha archipelago, where a large freighter
ran aground, spilling roughly 1,600 tonnes
of heavy fuel oil into the surrounding
waters, Sean Burns, the islands’ administrator, said in a statement.
The birds have been collected and transferred to the archipelago’s main island,
but rehabilitation efforts have been hampered by a lack of cleaning supplies and
equipment, Burns said. Only one response
ship has arrived on the scene from South
Africa, and the departure of a second, better-equipped ship has not yet been confirmed.
Tristan da Cunha, a British territory, is
one of the most isolated archipelagos in
the world and the journey by sea takes
between four to six days. The islands have

no airport. “A crucial next step is to confirm a second vessel to depart from Cape
Town in the next few days with all the necessary equipment and supplies to clean up
the birds, keep them healthy and hopefully return them to the ocean,” Burns said.
“It will be a race against time,” he said.
John Cooper, an information officer for
a conservation group monitoring the situation, said the captured penguins could
not be fed until a shipment of frozen fish
arrived on the second response vessel.
Andrew Gurr, governor of St Helena,
Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, said in a
statement that the Tristan government “is
committed to ensuring that the ship’s
owners will meet the full cost of any cleanup, damage or subsequent losses arising
from the situation.”
A wildlife expert on the scene suggested
this week that as many as 20,000 rockhopper penguins across several islands
may have been affected by oil, but those
numbers remain a preliminary estimate
and have not been confirmed. Island officials and a wildlife organisation participating in the clean-up did not respond to a
request for comment on the situation.
Other species have also been oiled,
including giant petrels and fur seal pups,
though the penguins seem to be the primary victims of the spill.
The rockhopper penguin is listed as
endangered by the International Union for
the Conservation of Nature, and roughly
40 percent of the known population is
found on the Tristan da Cunha archipelago.

Nightingale Island appears to have
significantly dissipated, potentially lowering the risk for extensive additional oiling
of wildlife, observers said. Most of the oil
within the wrecked vessel, the MS Oliva,
also appears to have already have entered
the sea.
Globules of crude and patches of diesel
continue to be observed floating on the
water and on the islands’ beaches, however, and responders are working to keep
penguins and other wildlife from entering
the water.
Andrew Evans, a correspondent with National Geographic,
captured the devastation in a story, video
and photographs posted online.
“Ecological disaster is not the story I
wanted to send from this place, but it’s the
one that is happening here right now,”
Evans wrote.
“It was a painful and disturbing scene,”
he said. “My only consolation is that the
people of Tristan take their birds very seriously and the entire island is contributing
to the rescue efforts.”

Custom online tailor adds e-commerce
Tech
guide
J HILBURN, a luxury men’s clothing company that specialises in custom clothing, is joining the fray with a new e-commerce component to its Web site that allows men to customise and purchase clothing directly online. The customised
clothing market has been heating up over the past couple of years. And although a number of Web sites offer customised
relaxed clothing, including basic T-shirts, hooded sweaters and sneakers, few are offering high-end custom-fitted clothing. J Hilburn works in a unique way by letting customers pick fabrics, cuts and styles from the site that are then fitted in
person by a “personal style advisor.” The advisor will come to a customer’s office and measure and fit them for the right
style and outfit. The site’s new features move more of the selection process online. As J Hilburn does not require traditional retail space to sell its products, and instead focuses on its Web site and iPhone app, the company can offer these
custom products at much lower prices than a traditional tailor. Some of the company’s custom shirts, for example, cost
between $80 and $100, which includes picking a personalised fabric and going through the custom-fitting process. J
Hilburn, which opened for business five years ago, says it sold 60,000 custom shirts in 2010.
Rayman’s origins, a Nintendo 3DS game.
Samurai hero.
Nintendo’s new world of games:
Three dimensions sans glasses
SETH SCHIESEL
NYT SYNDICATE
N
INTENDO’S new 3DS device is quite
literally like nothing you have seen
before. Have you ever watched fullmotion 3-D video without wearing
those annoying special glasses? Didn’t
think so. With the 3DS you will.
In the guise of a hand-held game machine that
costs about $250, Nintendo has produced a most
astonishing entertainment device. In an age of technical wonders, Nintendo’s only competition in innovating personal electronics is Apple.
Though the DS has sold substantially more units
than the iPhone (about 145 million DS’s worldwide by the end of last year, to about 90 million
iPhones), it generally eludes the attention of the
technology and media elite because so many of its
users are children.
That will change very quickly now. Just about
every child in America who likes video games is
going to want a 3DS. And millions of adults, who
previously paid little attention to their kids’ game
machines, are going to look at it just once
and say, “Wow.”
The 3DS (and 3-D television) simply feels different from 3-D
movies. In a movie theatre the
3-D effect often brings the
sensation that things on
the screen are coming at
you. Like many viewers, I often find
that distracting and unnatural.
On the 3DS and in 3-D television, the effect is
more that of depth, as if the screen were a window
into a reality where your eyes could perceive the
depth and relative position of objects. The big difference, of course, is that with 3-D television, as at the
movies, you have to wear special glasses, which no
one really wants to do for hours on end.
Nintendo has engineered a way for the screen
essentially to beam out those separate images for
each eye without the viewer’s needing any special
eyewear or headgear. You look into the 3-D top
screen on the DS, and it’s like watching a moving
hologram that is under your control. It is simply
magical. (See the sidebar for details on actual game
experiences.)
You don’t have to watch in 3-D — in fact,
Nintendo warns that children under 7
should not use the three-dimensional
effects because their optical systems may
not be sufficiently developed. There is a
slider beside the 3-D screen that adjusts
the intensity of
the 3-D effect
or turns it off
altogether.
The catch is that for the 3-D effect to work, you
have to hold the device (which is roughly five inches
wide) fairly straight in front of your face. If you look
at the screen from an odd angle or from off to the
side, it doesn’t work properly. But that’s OK,
because most people hold an electronic device like
this straight in front of them anyway.
This is why similar technology has not been used
in normal home televisions: most people don’t
watch TV straight-on. Instead they sprawl out on
couches and chairs at all different angles from the
screen. And here’s where it gets really interesting:
in addition to games, the 3DS can play 3-D movies
and streaming video from the Internet. Nintendo
hasn’t announced specific deals yet, but the company demonstrated 3DS versions of films from
Disney, DreamWorks Animation and Warner
Brothers last year.
My understanding is that the core display
technology involved here has been widely
known for decades, just as the core technology behind Nintendo’s revolutionary Wii console was not deeply esoteric.
As with the Wii, the genius that Nintendo
has demonstrated is not so much in basic
technology but in brilliant engineering and
empathy for everyday consumers.
Nintendo doesn’t try to compete with
other companies in delivering “more.”
Rather, it tries, successfully, to be more
creative in imagining unique entertainment experiences that other companies have never thought of.
For Nintendo, it is not a minute too
soon. The Wii is looking long in the tooth, and it
is long past time for Nintendo to at least update
the Wii with high-definition graphics. (The arrival
of Microsoft’s Kinect, which does away with the
controller completely, has also diminished the
Wii’s lustre.) But for all the Wii’s accolades, the
DS has actually proved more important to the
company over recent years. And the 3DS now is
shockingly cool.
Even beyond the 3-D screen, the 3DS is full of
wonderful touches. There are twin binocular cameras on the face of the device so you can take 3-D
pictures; of course, you can see them in 3-D only
on the 3DS itself. You can play music stored on
the removable memory card (included!). The
device includes tilt-sensitive motion controls,
which also function as a pedometer. In sleep
mode, the 3DS counts how many steps you take
while carrying it and rewards you with points
redeemable in certain games based on your physical activity.
You can also configure the 3DS to connect automatically with other 3DS units other people are carrying around you — say, on a school bus or commuter train. Nintendo calls it StreetPass. You can
then automatically exchange avatars with other
users without even turning your 3DS on.I can’t see
any reason that the sort of 3-D technology Nintendo
has engineered here won’t find its way in coming
years into laptops and cellphones. But the key question is always whether fancy new technology is
being well employed in the service of a new sort of
entertainment experience.
With the 3DS, the answer is yes.
In the guise of a hand-held game machine
that costs about $250, Nintendo has
produced a most astonishing entertainment
device. In an age of technical wonders,
Nintendo’s only competition in
innovating personal electronics is Apple.

Eyeshadow for brown eyes
Beauty
guide
IF one learns about what to do with her eyeshadow, she will delight in having found the best her eyes can look, and doing it for herself.
Specifically, eyeshadow for brown eyes is the focus here because over half the population has brown eye colour making it the most common
colour. As a rule, the colour wheel is important when it comes to matching eyes and shadows. It is best to use the colours opposite the colour of
one’s eyes to make them “pop out.” Brown is not too defined on the wheel, so bronzes and greens are used. Light colours highlight and darker
colours add depth and shading to the eyes. Eyeshadow for brown eyes should be darker and blended well. The use of eyeshadow sets about to
copy the natural eyeshadow that most women show due to a natural contrastive pigmentation on their lids. It is important to apply eyeshadow for brown eyes in steps. First, apply the lightest colour to the entire eyelid to the edge of the eyebrow. Use a deeper colour of the same one
to the crease, then patter a highlighter just beneath the brow. One can use shine, shimmer or luminous neutral or brown. Dark eyeshadow is
used in Gothic style, dramatics, plays, and such. They happen to use heavy make up or what is called stage [or cake] make up. It is put on in
exotic colours for stage acts too. Eyeshadow for brown eyes can also get Gothic or very dark and look great because it is those baby browns.

makeup is made from 100 percent micronized
minerals and contains no chemicals that usually irritate the skin.
All mineral makeup products are free of talc,
fragrance, silicones, chemicals, rice powders,

is that it improves the health of the skin and doesn’t contain harsh ingredients.
Mineral makeup is appropriate for all skin
types, including dry and hyper sensitive skins.
It is made from pure mineral elements‚ zinc
oxide, titanium dioxide, etc. that are sterilised
and pulverisedinto a powder, as well as pure iron
which absorbs heat. It’s made entirely from

Mineralmakeup is the only makeup that you
can apply after chemical peel, microdermabrasion or laser resurfing with no risk of inflammation or allergic reaction. It contains ingredients that help to protect your skin by providing
protection from the sun’s UV rays, free radicals
and wind.
Mineral makeup works especially well for
mature skins because it reflects light‚ hide fine
lines and wrinkles.
If your skin is very oily mineral makeup is
perfect for you because the minerals absorb
the excess oil, allow your skin to breathe naturally, and because mineral makeup doesn’t
contain oils and talc it won’t clog the pores.
You can use it to hide blemishes and discolouration‚ it easily covers redness and
evens out skin tone.
The dermatologist recommend mineral makeup to patients who suffer from severe acne,
rosacea, have skin allergies and eczemas because
the minerals heal the skin and nourish it.
Mineral makeup provides long-lasting and
flawless coverage because it absorbs the excess
oils and doesn’t cause sweating. I always recommend using mineral face powder to my clients
because it sets the foundation and allow it to stay
in place all day long, never cakes or creases.

Mushrooms for a healthy diet
Food
guide
IF YOU don’t use up a box of mushrooms right away, they may start to dry up. Don’t toss them out. Mushrooms reconstitute,
and although they won’t look as pretty as firm, moist, fresh ones, they’ll cook up fine. If you’ve got a half-pound — the contents of most boxes packed for supermarkets — cook them in olive oil with garlic and herbs and toss them with pasta, serve
as a side dish, or spoon over fish or chicken breasts.
Mushrooms are low in calories, packed with nutrients, and an excellent source of B vitamins and minerals, including selenium, copper, potassium, phosphorous, zinc and manganese. Mushrooms also contain a powerful antioxidant called Lergothioneine. Throughout Asia, they’re revered for their immune-boosting properties. They also contain more protein than
most vegetables, and their meaty texture makes them a good choice for vegetarians. Shiitake, maitake, oyster and king oyster
mushrooms contain the highest amount of L-ergothioneine, but criminis, portabellas and white button mushrooms are also
good sources. With one exception, this week’s recipes will focus on the most commonly available mushrooms, the kind that
might be shrivelling in your refrigerator right now.

which brings with it the possibility of discovery or maybe even a little

reminded of this every time I pick up a

earthy spice mix whose heat and pungency will vary according to the whim
of the person or company that
mixed it. I have bought a blend in
Kerala, sold in a twist of blue

The essence of garam masala literally hot mixture - is generally

not unusual to find star anise, fennel seed,

magic lies in the looseness of the recipe.
The further north you venture, the hotter
it seems to be. I use a commercial mix,
even though the idea of a rainy afternoon
spent in the company of spice jars and a
grinder appeals.
The most common way of using garam
masala is to add it as a base note with the
onions at the start of cooking. Adding it
early on lays down a deep, almost smoky
backnote of pepper and cumin. A lastminute addition will leave the more
ephemeral notes of cardamom, cinnamon
and clove intact.
Stirring a teaspoon or so of garam
masala into a pan of cooked, buttered rice
on the hob imbues it with a homely, fragrant headnote. I cook white or brown basmati until the water has evaporated, drop
in a thick slice of butter and a teaspoon of

It is sometimes made as a paste by
blending a little coconut milk into the dry

difference.
Last week I used dry garam masala in a
quick chicken supper and in a yogurtbased marinade for titchy lamb cutlets. The
first recipe used the spice blend to soften
and deepen the flavour base I had already
made with more potent spices - mustard
seed, cumin and chilli; the second as the

straight from the grill with a
generous seasoning of salt

leaves.
You need (Serves 4):
6 large chicken thighs
4 cloves garlic
a 50g piece ginger
1 small to medium onion
3 tbsp groundnut or vegetable oil
1 tsp brown mustard seeds
1 tspcumin seeds
2 small hot red chillies
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1 tbsp, lightly heaped, ground coriander
5 medium-sized (600g) tomatoes
100ml water, from the kettle
3 tsp garam masala
juice of one lime
a small bunch coriander
1 tsp cumin seeds
200g strained yogurt
2 tbsp lime juice
3 tbsp groundnut oil
1 level tsp dried chilli flakes
3 cloves garlic
2 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp ground coriander
12 small, thin lamb cutlets
a small handful mint leaves, chopped
1 lime, to serve
Method:
Briefly toast the cumin seeds in a shallow
pan. Put the yogurt into a mixing bowl
and stir in the lime juice, groundnut oil,
toasted cumin seeds and chilli flakes.
Peel and crush the garlic and stir it into
the yogurt with the garam masala,
turmeric and coriander, and salt and
black pepper. Add the chops, pushing
them down into the yogurt, cover, and
leave overnight in the fridge.
The following day line a grill pan or baking sheet with kitchen foil, place the chops,
still with marinade sticking to them, on the
foil. Grill for 3 or 4 minutes until the yogurt

the onion.
Warm the oil in a wok or frying pan, add
the chicken and fry on both sides until the
skin is pale gold. Lower the heat, cover and
leave to cook for 10-12 minutes until it is
almost cooked through. Pierce the thickest
part with a metal skewer; if the juices are
clear, then it is ready. If there is any sign of
blood, continue cooking for a few more
minutes. Remove the chicken to a plate
and discard the oil, but do not wash the
pan (there is much flavour stuck to the bottom).
Return the pan to the heat and add the
garlic and ginger paste, stirring to prevent
burning and to mix in the pan-stickings.
Add the mustard and cumin seeds, finely
chopped chillies, turmeric and coriander
and fry briefly, then add the chopped onion
and leave to cook over a moderate heat, with
the occasional stir, for 5 minutes or so.
Finely chop the tomatoes, losing as little of
their juice as you can. (I find cutting them
one at a time, putting each one into the pan
immediately it is cut, helps.) Add the
chopped tomatoes to the pan, simmering
over a moderate heat and stirring from time
to time. Leave for 5 minutes before pouring
in the water, the garam masala and a little
salt. Bring to the boil, stir, and leave to simmer for a couple of minutes before returning the chicken to the pan. Simmer for 5
minutes until the chicken is hot, then add
the lime juice and chopped coriander, and
serve.

explain that. Unless someone asks me a specific question,”
she told Q magazine.

OLOMBIAN pop star Shakira
pledged $400,000 on Thursday
to help rebuild a school for girls
in Haiti that was severely damaged during the country’s devastating earthquake last year.
The Grammy award winner and songwriter announced the contribution during
a visit to the Haitian capital Port-auPrince, where she danced and sang with
students of the Elie Dubois public school.
“I’m convinced the key to achieve a dignified future for the Haitian people is
through education,” Shakira said.

The school, housed in a nearly 100-yearold building, suffered significant damage
during Haiti’s January 12, 2010 earthquake that killed more than 300,000 people in one of the world’s poorest states.
More than
a year later, its walls and
ceilings show huge cracks
that have forced more than

nearby building.
Local officials said they hope

“I’d like to say to the girls that this is an

the most of it because I’m sure you can

that was to blame.
Franco, who hosted the world’s

his poor reviews and speculation
he was under the influence of

Franco, 32, is best known for his
dramatic roles in movies like 127

Oscar nomination this year, but he
also has taken roles in movies with
plots revolving around marijuana,
such as Pineapple Express.
The ceremony’s U.S. audience of

Letterman said he could
empathize with Franco over the
poor reviews, having hosted the
show himself in 1995. When
Franco asked him about his
experience, Letterman replied: “It
was horrible...I was so bad that
they talked for a while about shutting down the motion picture
industry.”
Letterman then offered Franco
some advice, telling him that initially he would be embarrassed
about the performance, but that it
would eventually wear off.
Franco’s Letterman appearance

A
CTOR Vinay Pathak,
who has gained
appreciable success
with his offbeat films, is
upset that his Chalo Dilli
co-star Lara Dutta’s potential has not been fully
utilised by the industry.
“I am not a commercial
celebrity. It’s a fantastic
opportunity for me to work
with Lara. She is a fabulous
actor, very underused in
our industry. She has done Vinay Pathak
some wonderful roles, but
she is yet to be exploited,” Vinay said.
“I am ecstatic about the fact that we came together to
work on a story and a film that has given ample opportunity to both of us to indulge in what we know the best,”
he added.
But isn’t it an odd pair on screen?
“It’s a story of an odd couple that’s why we have come
together. The story requires such imagery and such characterisation, hence such actors,” said Vinay, who is
working for the second time with director Shahant Shah
after his critically acclaimed Dasvidaniya.
Produced by Eros International in association with Big
Daddy Production, Chalo Dilli is set to hit the theatres on
