CHAMBER MEETING
SPONSORS ON PAGES 3&4
Speaker: Daniel Messeloff,
OSBA Certified Specialist in
Labor & Employment Law
Employees are every
company’s “best assets.”
However, there are times when HR and other
employment issues get out of hand, or there does not
seem to be a clear solution for how to address,
manage and resolve employee relations concerns.
This seminar will present an overview of how every
company can manage their employees so their
employees keep in line and comply with the
company’s practices and operations. Beginning with
basic employment policies that every company
should have, we will discuss best practices for
training employees in company policies, disciplining
employees for violating those policies, and, when
necessary, how to discharge employees so as to
protect your company to the greatest degree
possible.

Improvement Corporation, Hurley State Farm, and

When was the last time you worked on your business?
If you’re like most small business owners, you spend the
majority of your time working in your business. Managing the
day to day. Making sales calls. Putting out fires. Serving
clients and customers. All of these activities are critical to the
success of your business, but they keep you focused on what
is happening today – leaving very little time for you to think
about the future.
·
·
·
·
·
Where is your business headed?
What are your biggest assets, opportunities or
threats?
Are you ready for capital?
Do you have the right people on your team?
Do you really know who your customers are and
what they need?
We know. It’s tough to carve out time to think about these
areas of your business with all the demands on you as a
business owner. But if you never set aside time to think
about the path to success, how will you know you’re on it?
The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program is
uniquely designed for business owners like you. It’s an 11week program run by the highly acclaimed Babson College
that will give you the time, insights, and guidance you need
to take you business to the next level.
The program is free but don’t let that discount the value. If
you speak to any of the hundreds of alumni they won’t be
shy to tell you that enrolling was one of the best business
decisions they’ve ever made. And, at COSE, we know strong
small business programming and this is certainly one of the
best out there.
The next class begins in September and the deadline for
application is June 8. If you’re not sure you’re ready to
commit go here to learn more. Completing the application
doesn’t lock you into participating but it does make sure that
you have the option.

We thank them and hope you will consider them
for all your personal and professional needs.

Stepping Stones receives a 4-Star Rating
May 26, 2015 - From the State of Ohio House of
Representatives: Stepping Stones Child Development
Center has been named a Four-Star Step Up to Quality
Center by the Ohio Department of Job and Family
Services Bureau of Child Care and Development.
This prestigious distinction is a fitting tribute to Stepping
Stones, for it has attained a remarkable record of service to
the area. This fine facility has met a number of benchmarks
by offering low staff to child ratios, developing assessment
goals, and incorporating an active parent volunteer group, all
of which improve the growth and development potential of
children. Being names a four-star program is justifiable
source of pride and an outstanding reflection not only on
the institution itself but also on the astute management of
owner, Kandee Robishaw, on its hard working staff and
volunteers, and on the Madison community.
Stepping Stones Child Development Center has enhanced
the quality of life within the surrounding area, and its
generous contributions have gained it the appreciation and
esteem of many. As this worthy facility maintains its
unfaltering dedication to service, it will continue in the
tradition of excellence that has become its trademark. This

Cornerstone IT Named a Top MSP Provider
on CRN’s 2015 MSP500 List
Cornerstone IT, a managed services provider for small to
mid-sized businesses in Northeast Ohio, today
announced it has earned recognition on The Channel
Company’s 2015 CRN Managed Service Provider (MSP)
500 list as a MSP Pioneer 250. The MSP500 is an annual
list of top technology providers in North America whose
leading approach to managed services enables their
customers to improve operational efficiencies, elicit
greater value from their IT investments, and successfully
leverage technology to achieve greater competitive
advantage.
MSP500 was developed to help companies compare and
identify top rated managed service providers, the list
includes the top 500. Cornerstone IT placed among the
MSP Pioneer 250 which recognizes the top 250 MSP
providers who maintain a business model heavily
weighted toward managed services and focused on the
small and mid-size business market.

evolve as more small and mid-size businesses are
realizing the cost-saving and productivity benefits
provided by an MSP model,” says Ray Paganini, CEO.
“To be recognized as a top managed service provider not
only acknowledges our commitment to customer service
and to helping businesses succeed through technology,
but demonstrates the outstanding support of our growing
client base as well,” he adds.

Magnus Breaks Ground on New Plant Lab, Offices and Locker Room
Magnus, otherwise known as Painesville Chamber
member Hardy Industrial Technologies and Hardy
Animal Nutrition, is excited to announce that
construction is underway at our Painesville Township
plant on a new lab, management offices, locker room
and entryway. The significant additions at the
company’s one-of-a-kind production facility should be
completed by late summer or early fall.
Together with other major initiatives, Magnus has
invested $4.5M in just the last year in the 25-acre site
we acquired in 2007, which today develops and
manufactures exclusive products ranging from natural
animal feed ingredients, and natural industrial and
consumer waxes to customized fatty acids, biodiesel
fuel feedstocks and other specialty chemicals.
We create these products by uniquely refining and
repurposing renewable raw materials such as
domestic and tropical vegetable oils, cooking
greases, animal fats and more. Magnus companies
are rethinking oleochemicals in the pioneering way
we transform secondary materials into superior
prime products.
Our new facilities will provide a number of great
enhancements and features, including:
6
·
Technology upgrades to our current state-ofthe-art lab’s ability to meticulously analyze, test
and process incoming raw materials
·
System advances for stringent quality
assurance of outbound natural products during
every step of our manufacturing processes
·
Improved capability for creating benchtop
experiences in the lab that duplicate and
predict actual production methods and
outcomes
·
Streamlined raw materials sampling that
consolidates activities to a centralized area
·
Increased efficiency of inbound and outgoing
tank truck traffic
·
A more secure site with paved parking outside
the plant’s operational area
·
A newly landscaped entryway off Hardy Road
into the facility
·
A formal entrance and conference room for
guests
·
A staff changing room and shower facilities
with individual lockers
·
A new and improved employee break room

Lake County History Center
Partners With Geauga Family Farms
Consumer Reports Names Lake Health
Top Performer in CT Scan Radiation Safety
Geauga Family Farms, a cooperative of 10 certifiedorganic family farmers in Geauga County, is partnering
with the Lake County History Center to host a convenient
pick-up site for Painesville area members of its Community
Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.
Elizabeth Connor, executive director of the Lake County
History Center, said partnering with Geauga Family Farms
to provide a place for co-op members to pick up locally
grown produce is a way to get back to its own roots.
“The Lake County Home was a working farm since 1876,”
Connor said. “This would let us get back to the roots of
what the property was originally used for while allowing us
to reach out and see new faces of people who may not
have visited our site before.”
CSA members may pick up at the Lake County History
Center, located at 250 Riverside Drive in Painesville
Township, Tuesdays between 4 and 6 p.m. during the 20week Summer CSA season. The season will begin in early
to mid-June, depending on Mother Nature.
The CSA model provides a way for consumers to purchase
local food directly from a farm by entering into a contract
with the farmer. CSA members become partners with a
farm by paying up-front for a subscription, or “share,” of
produce that is received weekly during the 20-week
growing season from June through October. By investing
in the farm at the beginning of the growing season,
members provide financial support to the farm when it is
most needed for seeds, supplies, labor, etc.
Members choose a nearby location at which to pick up
their weekly share, such as the Lake History Center or
other new sites this year in Hudson and Beachwood. Other
sites include locations in Middlefield, Lakewood,
Macedonia, downtown Cleveland, Parma and others all
over Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Summit and Trumbull
counties. The produce is picked within 24 hours of
delivery. For a complete list of pick-up sites, or to get a
share of this year’s crop, visit geaugafamilyfarms.org. It’s
easy to sign up online or mail in a print application;
deadline for the summer growing season is May 15. For
more information, e-mail Laura Dobson at
[email protected].
Lake Health is one of 13 top performing hospitals in Ohio
for computed tomography—or CT scan—radiation safety,
according to Consumer Reports. Ratings, released by the
organization March 5, are based on the number of “double
scans” performed and the steps hospitals take to reduce
patients’ exposure to unnecessary, excess radiation.
Last year, Lake Health performed 41,225 CT scans, which
combine X-rays taken from many different angles to
provide cross-sectional images inside the body. These
clear, detailed pictures help doctors diagnose illnesses
and internal injuries as well as monitor cancer and other
diseases. While most patients benefit from the technology,
the increased use of the imaging tool has raised concerns
about the risks of radiation overexposure.
“CT provides unparalleled diagnostic capabilities that at
times can be lifesaving,” explained David Steiger, MD,
chief of radiology at Lake Health. “Although the scans
deliver more radiation than a single X-ray, the information
gathered is so much more valuable than the risk of
exposure involved.”
For example, CT scans can help pinpoint the location of a
potentially fatal blood clot in the lungs. They can also
render three-dimensional images of the heart and
coronary arteries allowing cardiovascular experts to check
for aneurysms and blockages without the need to perform
an invasive catheter angiography. However, Dr. Steiger
emphasizes that the technology should always be used
judiciously. “The golden rule in medicine is that the benefit
of the procedure should outweigh the risk,” he said.
With patient safety a top priority, Lake Health has the most
effective protocols in place to reduce radiation exposure
and minimize risk. “Patients who come to Lake Health for
any type of imaging, whether it’s CT, MRI or X-ray, or an
interventional radiology procedure can feel confident
they’re in good hands,” Dr. Steiger said.

An Invitation to MicroBiz






Is your employee roster small, really small - only one to five people?
Does the buck stop with you?
Are you never off the clock?
When asked who the final authority is when it comes to marketing your business, or planning for next year, do
you answer “ME?”
Do you find yourself wondering if other people working from home or in micro-enterprise such as yours feel
quite so “left out” of the business community?
Do you think that the problems you face or the questions you have are unique?
This new group may be for you.
If you have responded yes, or even maybe, to any of these questions, then we invite you to join MicroBiz.
What is MicroBiz? MicroBiz is a segment of the Painesville and Madison/Perry Chambers of Commerce where owners of
a micro-enterprise with 1-5 employees and who are not answerable to a franchise or corporate office may come
together as a community to discuss a variety of topics. Each meeting will have a speaker whose topic has been selected
by the steering committee members. The mission of this MicroBiz group is to help micro business owners in the
following areas:
1. Profitably grow their business and achieve the business owner’s goals.
2. Provide an environment for group members to share experiences, success stories, lessons learned, learn
about new technologies, and find support from peers.
3. Identify and address the unique issues micro business owners face.
4. Maintain enjoyment as a business owner and enjoy a better work/life balance.
5. Serve as a resource to help promote membership in PACC and MPAC.
Meetings will be held the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 8:00-9:00 AM at the Grove Church, 1697 Mentor Ave,
(at Nye Rd.), in Painesville. The first three meetings and topics are:
 June 17, 2015 - One Page Business Plan - Presented by Larry Lamphier, Wintergreen Associates, LLC
 July 15, 2015 - Merchant Services
 August 19, 2015 - Choosing The Right Business Entity
Please join us for the launch of this fabulous new group on Wednesday, June 17th
at The Grove Church!
To help the steering committee prepare – we ask that you please RSVP the Painesville Area Chamber office at 440-3577572 or [email protected]. We look forward to meeting you!

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE- Behaviors Part I
Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease can begin some 15 years before symptoms of mild cognitive impairment, or long before
the beginning signs of dementia surface.
People with Alzheimer’s often have problems with sleeping or may experience changes in their sleep schedule. Many
people with Alzheimer’s wake up more often and stay awake longer during the night.
A person
experiencing
sleep
disturbances
should have a
thorough medical
exam to identify
any treatable
illnesses that may
be contributing to
the problem.
Individuals may feel very drowsy during the day and then be unable to sleep at night. They may become
restless or agitated in the late afternoon or early evening, an experience often called “sundowning.” In late
stages of Alzheimer’s, individuals spend about 40 percent of their time in bed at night awake and a significant
part of their daytime sleeping. In extreme cases, people may have a complete reversal of the usual daytime
wakefulness-nighttime sleep pattern. Studies have found that sleep medications generally do not improve
overall sleep quality for older adults. Use of sleep medications is associated with a greater chance of falls and
other risks that may outweigh the benefits of treatment. Non-drug coping strategies should always be tried
before medications, since some sleep medications can cause serious side effects. Maintain regular times for
meals and for going to bed and getting up, seek morning sunlight exposure, encourage regular daily exercise,
but no later than four hours before bedtime, avoid alcohol, caffeine and nicotine. Treat any pain, if the person
is taking a cholinesterase inhibitor (tacrine, donepezil, rivastigmine or galantamine), avoid giving the
medicine before bed. Make sure the bedroom temperature is comfortable, provide nightlights and security
objects. If the person awakens, discourage staying in bed while awake; use the bed only for sleep
Discourage watching television during periods of wakefulness.
Non-aggressive Verbal Behavior: Incoherent
babbling, screaming or repetitive questions is
frustrating to the caregiver and family
members, especially as a sign that your loved
one is "losing it."
Non-aggressive Physical Behavior: Pacing,
wandering, repetitive body motions, hoarding
or shadowing represent ways for your loved
one to communication boredom, fear,
confusion, search for safety or inability to
verbalize a request for help or a feeling of pain.
Behavioral disturbances are seen in most
individuals with dementia at some point
in their course. Identification of
predisposing and precipitating factors is
very important. The approach to the
management of behavioral disturbances in
individuals with dementia should be
structured and thorough. Ensuring the
safety of the individuals and others should
be paramount. Addressing the causes of
behavioral disturbances such as comorbid
medical illnesses, polypharmacy, pain,
personal need, environmental factors,
Aggressive Verbal Behavior: Cursing and abusive language can be shocking when
your loved one was previously upright and proper.
Aggressive Physical Behavior: Clearly, physically aggressive behavior such as hitting,
scratching or kicking can be dangerous or life-threatening to the caregiver and care
recipient. Men are twice as likely to exhibit aggressive behavior, especially in the
middle to late stages of the disease, or if they have major depression. The
degradation of different parts of the brain causes aberrant behavior. Other
conditions, such as pain, can also lead to it.
Experts say that all types of behavior are forms of communication. Your loved one is
trying to tell you something even though the disease has robbed them of other ways
(i.e., talking) of telling you. Perhaps your loved one is depressed or in pain and does
not know how to express it in words. Some experts believe that agitation behavior is
"the inability to deal with stress." For the caregiver, the key is to identify whether the
behavior is event-related (a visitor arrives, dinner is served), sudden (unexpected
outburst) or escalates ("catastrophic" spiral of tension and outbursts). Organization
by the caregiver will help a great deal in beginning to combat these behaviors: Modify
the environment to reduce known stressors (e.g., shadowy lighting, mirrors, loud
noises); Note patterns of behavior and subtle (and not so subtle) clues that tension
and anxiety are increasing (i.e., pacing, incoherent vocalization); Dysfunctional
behavior often increases at the end of the day as stress builds and your loved one
becomes tired.
etc. is critical to a successful outcome.
