Customer Pricing and Licensing Guide: Symantec Backup Exec™ 12.5 for Windows Servers
Licensing agents and options
Backup Exec agents and options enhance and extend platform and feature support for Backup Exec environments.
Whether the need is to protect critical Microsoft applications or non-Microsoft operating systems, Backup Exec 12.5
for Windows Servers has an extensive portfolio of high-powered agents and options to scale and grow a Backup Exec
environment.
Symantec Backup Exec agents and options
Every Backup Exec environment requires at least one Backup Exec media server, which is the server attached directly to a disk or tape storage
environment. Each Backup Exec 12.5 media server license includes the following:
• Continuous Protection Server (CPS)—allows administrators to continuously capture and back up data changes to allow administrators to
restore data to any point in time
• Advanced Open File (AOF)—backs up open files during a backup job
• Intelligent Disaster Recovery (IDR)—tape-based system recovery
• Five Desktop and Laptop Option (DLO) licenses—offers complete data protection for desktops and workstations (Additional units can be
purchased.)
Then, based on the environment, additional agents and options can be added to each media server license. See below for a complete summary
of agents and options:
Option/Agent Features
NEW! Backup Exec
12.5 Agent for
VMware Virtual
Infrastructure (AVVI)
Backup Exec Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI) delivers comprehensive data protection to an unlimited
number of VMware virtual guest systems
AVVI provides comprehensive backup and recovery for virtual systems and legacy physical servers through a single
console with support for both disk and tape storage environments
Integration with VMware Consolidate Backup (VCB) maximizes backup and recovery performance
Granular data recovery for VMware infrastructures saves time and lowers cost
Benefits
AVVI supports and integrates with all key VMware technologies, including VCB, VirtualCenter, VMotion, VMware
Converter, ESX/ESXi, and VMware Tools, eliminating setup complexity.
Included Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) provides the ability to restore individual files and folders inside of
a guest virtual machine without restoring the entire guest virtual machine. (GRT is available for Windows guest
machines only; GRT for Linux OS guest machines is not currently available due to a VMware limitation.)
AVVI permits backups to be done without physically installing a Backup Exec Remote Agent inside of guest virtual
machines or on the ESX host server, for agentless backup.
Simply activating the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure license key on the Backup Exec media server makes all
integrated backup and recovery capabilities available.
Licensed
Per ESX host in the environment
What’s included
Unlimited* deployment of Agent for Windows Systems (AWS) and unlimited* deployment of Remote Agent for Linux
and UNIX Servers (RALUS) for restoring granular files to guest operating machines
*These unlimited agents are restricted to use in that particular ESX Server host’s virtual machine only.
Note
Granular recovery of application data such as Exchange emails, SharePoint objects, and Active Directory objects
requires the installation of the applicable application agent at time of backup. The application server will need to be
backed up individually using traditional methods as well. For example, if there are three Exchange Server VMs and
two SQL VMs, three Exchange Agents and two SQL Agents will need to be purchased.

One agent delivering affordable data protection to an unlimited number of Microsoft virtual systems per host
Comprehensive backup application for virtual systems and legacy physical systems through a single console
supporting disk and tape storage environments
Benefits
Performs backups of all online and offline guest virtual machines on a Hyper-V host system using Microsoft Volume
Shadow Snapshot (VSS) technology, without installing an agent inside of guest virtual machines

Licensing Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers
Overview
Effective with the release of Backup Exec 12.5, all Entitlement Certificates sent via email will include live activation
license keys as well as the quantity of entitlements. This global change applies to new purchases; upgrades from versions
prior to Backup Exec 12.5; and cross-upgrades to all Backup Exec 12.5 core license products, agents, and options for
both Windows Server and Windows Small Business Server. Backup Exec customers will no longer have to go through the
additional step of going online to the license portal to register their serial numbers in order to get their license keys to
activate the product. This change reflects Symantec’s ongoing customer-first commitment to ensure that the customer’s
usability experience is the very best it can be.
• First-time Backup Exec customers who have purchased a maintenance contract will need to go to the licensing portal
(https://licensing.symantec.com) to register their serial number, activate the support contract, and supply their
technical contacts to Symantec.
• Backup Exec 12.5 Box (License in a Box) products (with or without maintenance) will ship with live keys included in the
box. Customers who purchase Box products with maintenance will need to go to the licensing portal to activate their
support contract.
Backup Exec can be purchased through a certified Symantec reseller or direct through the Symantec Online Store. The
