Iowa Central Softball
2009 SEASON OUTLOOK
Tritons take lots of question marks, talent into 2009 season
If you were to look up the word “young” in a dictionary, the 2009 Iowa Central softball team picture might just appear there. Gone is the class
that won 104 games, finished ranked in the top five of the national rankings twice and set every softball record that appears in the Iowa
Central media guide. Here is the class that comes in as one arguably the most talented that has worn the blue and white and looking to
make its mark at Iowa Central.
Iowa Central, fresh off consecutive 52-win seasons, will take the field this season with 15 freshmen and only four sophomores. However, that
has not given the program an excuse to lower its expectations.
“We had a tremendous season last year,” said fourth-year head coach Rick Sandquist. “However, we still have higher goals as a program. The
bar has been set for this program and we expect to continue to play to the level we have established for ourselves. ”
Iowa Central returns National Fastpicth Coaches Association Second Team All-American Kit Daugherty and Honorable Mention AllRegion XI outfielder Britney Carlson as well as Hannah Jones and Ashley Nelson as the only sophomores to mix with the freshmen
talent on the roster.
Coach Sandquist thinks there is no reason this team can’t duplicate the results of the past two seasons, it just depends on how they approach
each game.
“We preach to our girls about coming ready to play every day,” said Sandquist. “Anyone can beat you on a given day, so we need to make
sure we come to the field and play our hardest every time.”
Pitching
The newest and most vital addition to the Triton rotation won’t even appear in the circle this season. First-year pitching coach Mandy Hacker joined
the Triton coaching staff this summer and brings big game experience to the Tritons. The Midland, Texas, native pitched for Blinn Community College
and led them to the NJCAA DI National Championship game before she moved onto NCAA DI North Texas.
Coach Hacker has been working with a very talented but young rotation this fall and winter to prepare them for the season. Ashley Nelson is the
lone returner for Iowa Central. She appeared in 18.1 innings over 11 games. She had a 1.15 ERA with a 1-0 record on the year.
A trio of freshmen will look to get their footing in the circle this season. Christina Bradley, a three-time, 3A All-State selection, had a very impressive
fall season for Iowa Central. As a prep at Saydel, she led the Eagles to their first ever State Softball Tournament appearance.
Mattie Sellers is another freshman who will contribute in the circle. The Des Moines East prep enjoyed a stellar career for the Scarlets as she
was won four straight CIML Metro championships and the 2006 4A State Championship. She was a three-time, 4A All-State selection as well.
Sellers, a versatile player, will also see time at first base and the outfield this season.
Rounding out the freshmen trio is Boone prep, Cola Danna. Danna came on very strong at the end of the fall season. She showed an ability
to throw strikes and pound hitters as the fall went along.
No rotation has been set as all four girls have shown great improvements and each have their own individual strengths. Look for all of them
to see significant time in the circle.
Outfield
Don’t expect to see many similar outfield combinations for the Tritons this season. Several players have shown that they could be a valuable
asset for Iowa Central this season and they will all get a chance to play there.
Lone sophomore Carlson will lead a pack of several freshmen in the outfield. Carlson was used mainly as a defensive replacement early in
the 2008 season, but came on strong late as she posted a .365 batting average with four doubles and three home runs. Carlson also stole
15 bases and was only caught once.
The only freshman who actually played outfield in high school is Humboldt prep Alex Clough. Clough, a First Team, 3A All-State selection at
Humboldt HS, has shown a natural ability in the outfield and at the plate.
Several freshmen that were former infielders will look to earn time in the outfield this season, namely Eagle Grove speedster Ashley Willard and
Washington HS standout Brittany Stout. Willard made the move to the grass early this fall and did an impressive job. The slapper’s speed on the
bases translates to the outfield where it has worked to her advantage. Expect Willard to remain in the outfield and appear at the top of the Triton’s
line up the spring. Stout brings a contagious intensity with her every time she steps on the field. She has taking a strong liking to the outfield and
was one of Iowa Central’s best hitters at the end of the fall.
Another infielder-turned-outfielder is Manson Northwest Webster prep Hali Dencklau. The former second baseman was one of the Tritons top
hitters this fall as she added some real power to her bat seemingly overnight.
“We talk about swinging hard and hitting the ball with authority,” said Sandquist. “This fall in the middle of a game it just clicked for her. She
started hitting the ball hard with some real results.”
Three other freshmen will split time between the infield and outfield. Lara Reese, from Rohnert Park, Calif., impressed this fall with her ability to play consistently in both the infield and outfield. Her steady bat gained power as the fall and winter workouts progressed as she was
one of the top hitters on the roster. Reese will rotate between shortstop and outfield this season.
“Lara has a smoothness to her game that not many people have,” said Sandquist. “Nothing seems to surprise her and she seems to take
everything in stride. You can tell she’s played a lot of softball.”
Former Interstate 35 HS prep, Staci Ritchey, is another infield-outfield hybrid on the roster. Ritchey, a former left-handed shortstop in high school,
has made a smooth transition to first base. At nearly 6’ tall, Ritchey has developed into a very reliable target a first base. However, she has been
working in the outfield because of her strong arm. She will split time at first base as well as time in the outfield.
Also expect Sellers and sophomore Daugherty to see action in the outfield this season.
As always, the decision on who gets the nod in the outfield will come down to who is swinging the hottest bat. Coach Sandquist doesn’t expect
to settle on just three girls to roam the outfield this spring. With the talent and ability of each of these girls to play just about anywhere well,
they will have plenty of options.
“All of these girls have the potential to crack our line-up,” said Sandquist. “They will all get a shot and I feel comfortable with almost
any combination we put out there.”
Infield
The infield is where there will be the most new faces this season. All four infield spots will be held by freshmen to start the year off, but just
like in the outfield, it probably won’t be the same four girls every game.
Brittany Martin had a wildly successful fall cemented her spot at third base and the middle of the Triton batting order. Daugherty will also see
some time at third base this season.
Iowa Central Softball
2009 SEASON OUTLOOK
The middle infield will consist of a four girl rotation. Stephanie Graziani, from New Castle, Penn., will play primarily second base for the Tritons.
The speedy lefty is a dangerous slapper at the top of the batting order and played solid defense this fall. Joining her at second base is Fort
Dodge Senior High prep Jackie Birnbaum. Birnbaum played great defense this fall and has made vast improvements with the bat.
The rotation at shortstop includes another FDSH prep, Courtney Vaughn. An excellent defensive shortstop, Vaughn has also taken giant steps
to improve her bat. She will rotate with Reese, who will also spend time in the outfield.
The rotation at first base will be between Sellers and Ritchey, who will also see time in the outfield. Joining them at first base will be FDSH
prep, Kenzie Scharf. Scharf saw some time at first in the fall while she wasn’t catching.
Catcher
If you are looking for returning All-American third baseman Kit Daugherty, you’ll have to look a little closer. Daugherty will be donning the
catching gear for the Tritons this season. Daugherty made the move this fall with fantastic results. Her strong arm and athleticism behind
the plate will hopefully neutralize opponents’ running attack. Daugherty will also see time at third base and in the outfield.
“Kit has made a very difficult move look fairly easy,” said Sandquist. “Now that she has the ability to play three positions, our line-up is that
much more flexible. It gives us chance to put the best nine in the game at all times.”
Sophomore Hannah Jones will be looking to split time with Daugherty this season. Jones was one of the Triton’s most reliable bunters last
spring and she has made a vast improvement in her defensive game over the fall and winter.
Two freshmen joining the fold are Scharf and Andrew HS prep Courtney McNally. Both will see action this spring. Both have made great
improvements to their quickness behind the plate and their consistency with the bat.
Offense
To call Coach Sandquist’s offensive philosophy at Iowa Central aggressive is an understatement. Look for Iowa Central to stick to the
recipe of lots of speed and power again this season. One new addition to this year’s squad will be natural left-handed batters. In the past
the coaches have had to convert fast right-handed hitters into slappers, a process that takes two years to see results. This season they
have the luxury of Willard, Graziani and Clough who come in as fast slapper. Staci Ritchey comes in as a lefty but not a slapper. Ritchey
and Jones also will be able to add some pop from the left side of the plate.
Look for Daugherty and Martin to supply most of the power for the Tritons this season as
they are expected to sit in the middle of the order to help bring the speed around the
bases. Coach Sandquist feels this could be a very imposing back-to-back combo for Iowa
Central this season.
“Kit was an All-American last season and she made a lot of improvements to her swing
as the season went along,” said Sandquist. “Now that she has a season of college softball behind her she should be ready for another great year. Martin came in as a onedimensional hitter and we have got her using the whole field. I really expect big things
from both of them.”
Several other Tritons will compete for spots in the order. Reese and Stout each had very
strong fall seasons at the plate. Stout was the Tritons’ hottest hitter in the annual fall World
Series and Reese continued to add power to her swing. Dencklau also developed a powerful
stroke this fall and she looks to continue that into the season.
The jack-of-all-trades, Sellers, will also be counted on in big spots in the Triton Line-up. She
has worked extremely hard in the offseason to tune up her swing. Look for her to be near
the middle of the order.
If Carlson can reproduce her numbers from the last half of the 2008 season this season,
she will also be able to do some damage in the batting order.
From top to bottom Sandquist thinks he should have a very solid line up. The luxury of
being able switch defensive line ups without affecting the offensive line up should help
the Tritons’ cause this season.
“We are all very excited as a program for this season to get started,” said Sandquist. “We
have had some good teams in the past who have made their mark at Iowa Central, this
class is ready and eager to make their own.”

COACHING STAFF
Rick Sandquist
Head Coach
Entering his fourth season as head softball coach, Rick Sandquist has his program where he wants it, with a target on its back.
After a posting a 38-16 overall record in 2006, the program exploded onto the national scene in 2007 with a 52-13 overall
record, an ICCAC championship and finished as the fifth-ranked team in NJCAA Div. II. Last season Sandquist led the Tritons to
a 52-10 campaign and finished as the fourth-ranked team in the nation. In three seasons Sandquist has an overall record of
142-39 (.784), a conference record of 44-14 (.758) , three NJCAA All-Americans, one NFCA All-American, an ICCAC Championship
and a Region XI Runner-Up finish.
Sandquist is no stranger to Iowa Central athletics. Prior to taking over the Triton softball program, he the headed the Triton
baseball team from 1987-1988 and again from 1996-2002, posting a 498-267 record in his nine years at the helm. From 19962002 his teams went to five World Series which included two National Runner-Up finishes and two fourth place finishes. He

runners-up finish in the NJCAA National Championship held in Claremont, Florida pitching in every game of the tournament.
Hacker was selected NJCAA Academic All-American, NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete, and All Academic Team. She finished
her playing career at the University of North Texas where she was part of the Inaugural season in 2003. She received her
Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at North Texas. She then went on to receive her Master of Science in Forensic Science
at National University. Hacker also works as a housing coordinator on campus.
Josh Sandin
Assistant Coach
Josh Sandin enters his second year as an assistant coach for the softball team. Sandin, and Iowa Central alum, was a member
of the Sandquist-led baseball program in 2002, Sandquist’s final season as the coach, and 2003. In his two seasons at Iowa
Central, the Tritons went to the NJCAA Division II World Series twice, earning a fourth place finish in 2002 and finished as
National Runner-Up in 2003. After his two years at Iowa Central, he went to Central College in Pella, Iowa, where he graduated
with a degree in general studies and lettered twice in varsity baseball. After college, Sandin worked in the athletic department
at Sonoma State University for one year as the assistant sports information director. In his time there he was the main contact
for a softball program that qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament. Sandin’s responsibilities as assistant softball coach
will be will catchers and outfielders. Josh lives in Fort Dodge with his fiance Chelsea.
Julie Rasmussen
Assistant Coach
Julie returns to the Tritons with first-hand experience of playing under Coach Sandquist and a new last name. As Julie Sprunger,
she served as the emotional and vocal leader of the Tritons in a two-year span that saw the Tritons win a school record 104
games. She is volunteering with the team as she finishes her degree in Radiology Technology. Julie will help primarily with the
outfielders. She graduated from Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Ind., in 2005 with an Associates Degree in
Business Management in 2005. She also played soccer for two seasons there. Julie lives in Otho with her husband, Tyler, whom
she married in the summer of 2008.

2008 SEASON REVIEW
Another year, another redraft of the record book.
In a season that saw very little down turns, the Iowa Central softball program leapt to new
heights in 2008. The Tritons won 52 games for the second year, tying the record for most wins
in a season that they set in 2007. The 52-10 overall record is the best in program history. The
Tritons received their highest ever national ranking when they reached No. 2 in the Ringor/
NJCAA Division II National Softball Poll on April 23. Iowa Central finished the season ranked
No. 4, the highest it has ever finished a season.
As far as offense goes, it was the best year ever for Iowa Central. The Tritons batted .374 as
a unit, scored 442 runs, cranked out 630 hits, belted 53 home runs, hit 32 triples and stole
156 bases, all new records.
Sophomores Sam Waters and Kelsey Lunn left a collective dent in the record books as well.
Waters set single-season records in at bats (207), runs (75), hits (97), triples (9) and stolen bases
(52). She batted .471, one point behind the single-season record Lunn set, hit 13 doubles, six
home runs and had 44 RBIs. Waters leaves Iowa Central with six career records; batting average
(.455), at bats (413), runs (148), hits (188), triples (15) and stolen bases (100).
Lunn also got some serious ink in the records books as she set single-season records in batting
average (.472) and doubles (28). In 2008 Lunn had 91 hits, 11 home runs and 61 RBIs as well as
a .992 fielding percentage at first base. She will leave with career records in doubles (48) and RBIs
(123), she also ranks in the all-time top-four of each offensive category for her career.
The two offensive powers of the season were mirrored by Kylee Jones on the mound. The ace of
the pitching staff left with six single-season records; wins (22), innings pitched (182.2), complete
games (25), shutouts (8), strikeouts (146) and earned run average (1.49). On top of those records,
Jones leaves with career records in wins (41), innings pitched (341.1), complete games (44),
shutouts (14), strikeouts (154) and earned run average (1.49).
Other records setters in 2008 included Hailey Beneke, Kylie Allen and Kit Daugherty. Beneke
set the single-season record for winning percentage by pitcher as she went 11-0. At the plate, her six home runs put her at 20 for her career,
a new record. Beneke also set the single-season record for home runs in 2007 with 14. She also drew 42 walks, a new career record.
Allen set the single-season mark for hit-by-pitch with six. Allen posted the second-most sacrifices in a season with eight in 2008. Combined with
her single-season record of nine in 2007, Allen has a career record with 17. Also during the season, she held the record for triples with eight, but
that record was broken by Waters later in the season.
Daugherty, only a freshman, did not set any career records in 2008, but will threaten to break some in 2009. Daugherty led the team in home
runs (13) and RBIs (64) in 2008. Her 64 RBIs are a single-season record. She is in the top five all-time for single-season batting average (5th,
.408), at bats (3rd, 201), runs (3rd, 66), hits (4th, 82), triples (3rd, 6) home runs (2nd, 13) RBIs (1st, 64) and stolen bases (3rd, 31).
Iowa Central had five players finish the season with a batting average above .400 and had six more with batting averages above .300. On
the bases, Iowa Central had six players with more than 10 stolen bases, two with more than 30. Iowa Central finished with a 156 stolen bases
and held opponents to 19.
The Tritons were good in close ball games and blowouts in 2008. Iowa Central won 34 games by five or more runs, 16 by eight or more, 10
by 10 runs and one by 15 runs. 23 of the games ended early due to the eight-run mercy rule that ends the game when one team is ahead
by eight or more after the fifth inning. However, the Tritons also found a way to win the close ones too as they compiled a record of 11-3 in
one-run ball games. Another impressive record the Tritons had this season was their 17-1 record while playing at Triton Field. It is believe to
be the best home record ever for the program.
March 5 was a memorable day for head coach Rick Sandquist as he notched hits 100th win as a softball coach and 600th career win. Number
100 came in a 1-0 win over then No. 3 Lansing CC and No. 600 came in a 10-2 win over Henry Ford CC that evening. The wins came on the team’s
annual spring trip to Florida. He now has an overall career record of 640-303 (.678) and a career softball record of 142-39 (.784).
In total, Iowa Central broke nine team records and 14 individual records in 2008. The sophomore class graduated as the first to ever win 100 games in a
career (104-23). As a unit, they own every team record and 19 of 20 individual records. On top of that, they held a GPA of 3.45 on for this season.
Headlined by five First Team All-Region selections, the Tritons had an impressive showing as all nine of the Tritons regular starters earned recognition.
Kylee Jones, Amanda Phillips, Kelsey Lunn, Kitty Daugherty and Sam Waters each received first team honors. Marla Jackson, Amy Sandquist and
Kylie Allen were named second team and Britney Carlson, Hailey Beneke, Julie Sprunger and Melissa Pagel were honorable mention. Waters
became Iowa Central’s first two-time NJCAA II All-American as she earnd Third Team honors and also won the Adidas Golden Spike Award as the
nation’s top base-stealer. Daugherty was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Second Team All-America
Two members of the class, Waters and Lunn, continued their careers at the NCAA Division I level and three others, Allen, Phillips and
Jones, continued at the NAIA level.
