Come Sail Away
If only running a business
could be like going on a
cruise….just get on board
and let someone else steer
the ship and handle the
work. Business owners,
probably consider running
their business more akin to
riding a roller coaster. But
wouldn’t it be nice to
briefly escape by getting on
board a ship filled with
people having fun, as you
all travel together toward an exotic
destination leaving all your worries behind.

2016 Chamber Board of Directors Elected
The following Chamber
members have been elected
to serve as officers on the
Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors for 2016: Melissa
Olsen, KerberRose S.C.—
President; Kristy Hesse, KI
B o nd u e l. —P r e si d e n t Elect; Char Larsen, Premier Investment Services— Treasurer; Kathy

thanks all of our outgoing board members for their years of service and President Kathy Hansen for her leadership. Outgoing
board members include Linda Beversdorf, Dorothy Erdmann,
Jim Feeney, Kay Kristof, Bobbi Jo Ladwig, and Keith
Marquardt.
The Chamber will recognize new and retiring board members at
their 89th Annual Banquet and Awards on Thursday, January
28th.
Newly elected board
members include; Tammy Brzeczkowski, Dynamic Designs
Unlimited; Kristy Hesse, KI-Bonduel; Donna Hobscheid, Coldwell Banker Hilgenberg Realtors; Chad Kary, Results Broadcasting; Trish Kieckhafer, Stone Creations; and Gina Patzer,
Premier Community Bank.
The board is comprised of 15 Chamber members from throughout Shawano County representing the areas of agriculture,
manufacturing, retail/business, tourism, education, government,
and professionals. Seven additional liaison board members represent Shawano County, Shawano County Economic Progress,
Inc., The Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, City of Shawano, The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians,
Leadership Shawano County, and the Chamber Ambassadors.
The Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce is a 420 member
organization that advances economic growth by coordinating
resources and providing networking, promotion and education to
businesses in Shawano and Menominee Counties.
Sally Jo Stevens, Best Western Wittenberg has recently been
elected to the position of president of the Shawano Country
Tourism Council (a division of the Shawano Country Chamber
of Commerce) and will fill the tourism representative position
on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors. The Chamber
At the December meeting of the Chamber Ambassadors the following officers were elected: Scott Parson was elected to a second
term as president; Donna Hobscheid was re-elected vice-president;
and Lisa Meisner was elected secretary.
On a very sad note, we mourn
the loss of a great Chamber promoter, John Gallagher. John
was one of the Chamber’s most
enthusiastic and ardent supporters. He served in many capacities for the Chamber including member, board member,
past president, ambassador,
and volunteer. He also worked
as a part-time receptionist for
the Chamber for over 20 years.
Many times, John was the first one to welcome a new
business and explain why they needed to be a member of the Chamber. His belief was that every business
should be in the Chamber and he worked toward that
goal. He was not afraid to approach any business
owner with a request for participation or a donation
for Chamber events or causes. John’s love and commitment to the Chamber was very evident and we
have all benefited from his hard work and dedication.
John received our 2000 Citizen of the Year award for
all his volunteer activities for community organizations and activities. We will miss his kindness, desire
to be of service, and most of all, his friendship.

Blue Light Exposure
Blue light is emitted from many sources, including the sun, light
bulbs, TVs, computers, tablets and smartphones. There’s some
evidence that blue light can impact the quantity and quality of
sleep. Darkness is a natural cue to our bodies that it’s time for
sleep, but light exposure from various screens after the sun has
gone down can delay sleep. Excessive blue light exposure can
lead to melatonin deficit and disruption of circadian rhythms
which can mean less sleep and poorer quality sleep.
Experts in the sleep field recommend the following:

Be mindful of blue light exposure at the end of the day.

Proximity is an important factor with night time exposure.
Considering utilizing screens that are farther away closer to
bed time.

Use your devices less in the evening. Some studies show
that effect on melatonin doesn’t begin until more than an
hour of exposure.

Consider staying away from devices before sleeping.
Recommended time varies from 30 minutes to three hours.

Impact on sleep, overall, is about more than just the blue
light exposure. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try modifying your lighting and device use, but consider other factors
that may be impacting your sleep.
There are additional options for decreasing exposure to blue
light in the evening. Turning the
brightness setting
down on laptops,
tablets
and
phones can help.
Many phones and
tablets have an
a u t o- b r ig h tn es s
feature to automatically dim the
screen when it is
dark or in low light. Consider using an application that warms
your screen colors depending on the time of day or a screen
protector that filters blue light. Cellcom offers protective filters
for some of its devices.
Cellcom is an innovative
wireless company that provides nationwide service for
its customer base throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, with nearly 70 retail
and agent locations. Cellcom is respected for its long-standing
reputation of delivering extraordinary customer care, being a
strong community partner, and for its renowned network, which

Proposed Overtime Rules Will Result in
Tough Operational Decisions for
Area Employers – Final Ruling
Scheduled for July 2016
Proposed Amendments to the
Fair Labor Standards Act
(FLSA) by the Department of
Labor will heavily impact businesses in lower-wage rural
areas such as Northeast Wisconsin. The proposed amendments will
significantly increase the minimum salaries
which must be met in order for
an employee to be classified as
‘Exempt’. The following categories of white collar exemptions to be impacted by the
proposed amendments:
·
Executives
·
Administrators
·
Professionals
·
Computer employees
·
Outside salespersons
posed amendment will increase the salary basis test to
$970/wk
or
$50,440 annually.
These
proposed regulations
more
than double the
annual
salary
for an employee Melissa Olsen
to be classified
as exempt. In summary, exempt employees currently making between $23,660 and
$50,440 will become eligible for
overtime wages beginning in
early 2016.
The FLSA determines an employee’s exemption status by
analyzing both the primary duties of the individual as well as
the salary of the individual.
Exempt status eliminates the
need for employers to track
hours or pay overtime to the
employees who meet the criteria for exemption. The specific
duties tests for the employee
categories can be found on the
Department of Labor’s website
at www.dol.gov.
Employers should begin considering how these changes
may impact their budget and
staffing resources in the upcoming year. There are some
aspects of the proposal that are
in the process of being clarified
such as whether bonuses, performance pay, or nondiscretionary compensation can be factored into an employee’s salary.
The Department of Labor
should provide further clarification to employers on those topics when they issue the final
ruling. The final ruling will be
announced in July of 2016.
Businesses will have 60 days
after the ruling to make the
required changes .
Currently the salary basis test
requires that white collar exempt employees be paid not
less than $455/week or
$23,660 annually. The pro-
