Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Keynote
Speaker: Donzaleigh Abernathy
Wednesday, Jan. 20 | 7 p.m.
Chandler Ballroom, University Center
Donzaleigh Abernathy was just 7 when she joined her
father, Ralph David Abernathy, in Alabama for parts of
the 50-mile Selma to Montgomery march in 1965. Her
father and his close friend Martin Luther King Jr. were
leaders in the nonviolent civil rights movement that
inspired that march and changed history. Ms. Abernathy
witnessed the growing movement in her family and
home. That upbringing gives her a powerful voice in
today’s discussions of race and equality. An activist,
author, and actor, Ms. Abernathy published Partners
to History: Martin Luther King, Ralph David Abernathy
and the Civil Rights Movement in 2003. She appeared
in the film Gods and Generals, the HBO movies Only
in America and Miss Evers’ Boys, and the TV movie
Murder in Mississippi. She has had recurring roles in TV’s
The Walking Dead, Lincoln Heights, Dangerous Minds,
House, 24, and Amazing Grace. Ms. Abernathy has
worked for the Centers for Disease Control’s HIV/AIDS
Awareness Program, for Amnesty International, and for
Artists for a New South Africa.
