in 1835. The County
Courthouse, built in 1841,
is on the National Register
of Historic Places and
survived the fires of 1848
and 1870 which destroyed

were farmers. In the 1830s,
growth of the community
was aided by the opening
of the Ohio and Erie Canal,
which helped transport
agricultural products to
distant markets.
