GARNER – The gym at Garner-Hayfield elementary rang with cheers and
applause as fifth and sixth graders
demonstrated their newly learned
engineering skills before an audience
of their peers and parents on Friday,
Feb 27.
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The goal
of the program is to increase student
interest and achievement in those
subject areas.
STEM is a statewide initiative started in 2011 and offered through Iowa
State University Extension Outreach
and the North Central Iowa Region
Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.
Teachers Krista Hopp, (Grades 5/6
science) and Tony Heitland (Grades
5/6 math) were asked to participate.
Tony Heitland said, “The overall

what the solution is.”
Students worked on the project 4
weeks. Engineers from Stellar Industries, Garner, were invited to share
insights about their jobs, and answer
questions from the students.
Working in teams of two, students
developed engineering and problem-solving skills to design two
self-propelled “cars” from common
materials.
Fifth graders worked on cars that
would scoot across the gym floor for
least 10 meters (about 30 feet) using a
balloon inflated to 8 inches diameter
for propulsion.
Cars were made from heavy paper
stock, straws for axles, tubing and
rubber bands. Students received three
different sized tubes to attach the balloon.
“They had to figure out which tube
would make their car go the farthest

and what could they do in addition to
make their cars go farther,” Heitland
said.
Sixth graders made cars that were
bigger and more complex. They were
challenged to figure out how to use
weights and levers to a make a gravity-powered car. The goal was make
their cars go at least 3 meters (about
10 feet), Krista Hopp explained.
Materials for these vehicles included
a plastic coated board for the main
frame of the car and the lever. They
had three different sizes of wheels.
Pennies were used for weights.
“They had to decide which wheel size
to have, how tall the support columns
would be, and how much weight they
needed on their lever,” said Hopp.
“They had a lot of fun with it,” Tony
Heitland noted. “Their first thought
was, ‘This is such an easy project.
We should be able to get done with
this in a couple days.’ When they figured out their car wouldn’t go straight

FOREST CITY – Hancock County
authorities continue to investigate
a shooting incident that occurred
approximately 4:34 p.m. at 2043
River Road, Forest City, Tuesday,
Feb. 24.
According to a press release,
Hancock County law enforcement
responded to reports of gunshots
at the residence. A 26-year-old
female sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound to her leg. She is being
treated at Mercy Medical Center in
Mason City.
Norris Odell Hughes, 28, Forest City, was taken into custody in
connection to the shooting. Hughes
was charged with Felon in Possession of a Weapon. He was taken to
Hancock County Jail. Hughes posted $5,000 cash bond and released
this past weekend.
An investigation into the shooting is on-going, according to David

Garner Chamber
Hosts Ag Breakfast
GARNER – The 8th annual Agriculture Breakfast, hosted by the Garner
Chamber of Commerce and other local businesses, will be held Wednesday, March 18 at the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High School ag room
and auditorium, 7-10 a.m.
An omelet breakfast will be served
from 7-8 a.m, followed by the program in the high school auditorium at
8:15 a.m.
Trent Loos, humorist, and storyteller
on rural America, will be this year’s
guest speaker.
Best known for his radio programs,
“Loos Tales” and “Rural Route” Trent
is a nationwide humorist and storyteller. Speaking on issues ranging
from animal agriculture to food production Loos believes in advocating
for agriculture. Trent has taken on the
challenge of speaking on behalf of the
hard-working farmers and ranchers of
America.
Loos is a sixth generation United
States farmer with a passion for agriculture that started years ago – he had
his first pig when he was just 5 years
old on the family farm near Quincy,
Ill. He established his strong rural
foundation in farming side-by-side
with his father and grandfather. That
strong connection between man and
his God-given natural resources was
the source for all of their farm management decisions. While Trent recalls
walking soybeans with his two role
models, his real fondness was for the
animals.
Those who would like to attend are
asked to RSVP the Chamber of Commerce by Wednesday, March 11.

GHV Board responds to teacher contract proposal
GARNER – The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Board of Education
made their initial response to the 201516 teacher contract proposal from
Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Education
Association. Representatives from the
GHV board and the GHVEA met Feb.
25.
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Management Team accepts the GHVEA’s
initial proposal of 4.5 percent, which
increases first year teacher pay by
$1,378 for a total of $33,500 contingent upon the following items:
•Management seeks to honor the current health care language in 10.1 A of
the current GHEA Master Contract for
all current Garner-Hayfield and Ventura teachers. These teachers would be
grandfathered into this language until
their career at GHV is complete.
All employees hired for the start of
the 2015-2016 school year will receive a fully paid single health and

and they tried two, three, four, five
times…they found out this wasn’t so
simple. They stopped saying this was
a piece of cake.”
As they worked on their projects, students were required to record their
findings and any changes they made.
Heitland and Hopp will collect the
data and have the students fill out a
survey. The data from the project and
surveys will be submitted the North
Central Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council, Iowa State University
Extension and Outreach.
Heitland anticipates the results from
an upcoming Iowa Assessment questionnaire in April should show an increase in student interest in science,
math, engineering and technology
from a year ago.
“Judging by what we did in the gym,
I think people are more excited about
that,” he said.
dental plan. This would eliminate the
75 percent family option in 10.1 A for
all new hires for the start of the 20152016 school year.
•Management seeks to have a designated teacher workday of 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. We suggest this be 4.1 C in the
Master Contract.
•Management seeks to eliminate
partial self-funding due to language in
the Affordable Health Care Act.
The current base salary for teachers
at GHV is $32,623.
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Education Association made their initial contract proposal on Feb. 11. In
addition to the 4.5 percent package
increase, GHVEA also proposed contract language concerning:
•Designated holidays and days off
•Personal leave time
•Per diem pay for teachers who supervise student activities on non-contract days
•Travel time between Garner and
Ventura for faculty who commute between the two campuses during the
day.
•The option to be paid on the 5th and
20th of the month.
•An extended contract for individuals in charge of organizing and coordinating international trips.
Future collective bargaining sessions between the school board and
the GHVEA are now done in closed
session, in accordance Chapter 21 of
the Iowa Open Meetings Law.
Supervisors adopt
FY16 county budget
GARNER – Hancock County supervisors unanimously approved the $12.6
million county budget for fiscal 201516.The new budget will go into effect,
July 1.
No questions or comments were
raised during the public hearing on
Monday, which was attended by county officers and department heads.
The tax rate for FY16 is $3.75344
for urban property and $6.92456 for
rural areas.
“I’d like to thank the department
heads for making it so easy this year,”
said Jerry Tlach, chairman. “You did a
good job.”
Supervisors also set the salaries for
elected officials for the next fiscal
year. The board made no changes from
the recommendation of the Hancock
County Compensation Board in December. At that time the Compensation Board recommended a 3 percent
raise for auditor, recorder, treasurer,
and supervisors; and 4 percent for the
sheriff and county attorney.
The new salaries as approved the
board are: $90,556 for the county attorney, $54,661 for the auditor, treasurer and recorder, $74,858 for the
sheriff and $31,040 for county supervisors.
The board adopted a resolution of
committed monies for future longrange projects. A total $165,000 from
the General Basic Fund will be used
for the following:
•$12,000 for 1-2 to purchase a vehicle for the Emergency Management
Agency
•$60,000 for 2-3 years to update of
Hancock County aerial photography
for GIS mapping
•$60,000 for election machines for 2
years
•$15,000 for tuck-pointing of the
courthouse building for 3-4 years
•$18,000 for maintenance and update of the courthouse for 3-4 years
Barber to retire from
First State Bank
Emilie Jenson
[email protected]
After 30 years in the banking business, Steve Barber, senior vice president of First State Bank in Britt, will
be retiring at the end of the month.
Barber, who has been with First State
since 2010, has also worked for banks
in Tipton and West Liberty in southeast Iowa, and locally, in Kanawha.
Prior to working in the banking field,
Barber had his own accounting business.
“I like to work with numbers,” he
said. “I started as a vacation replacement teller back in 1985 and was offered a permanent full-time position in
the fall.”
Barber said he has liked the variety
and change the banking world brings
to a career.
“Things are constantly changing in
this business,” he said. “from technology to regulations, and changes in the
economy, there is always something
to keep up with.”
Barber said he has enjoyed being
part of the Britt community, and has
served the past several years as treasurer of the Britt Chamber of Commerce on the Board of Directors. He
will continue to handle finances for the
chamber after retirement.
“They have a wonderful community here,” Barber said. “Britt is still a
very active small community with a
very active retail area downtown and
chamber of commerce.”
Barber will remain on the job parttime through March and officially retire April 1. He plans to stay in the area
as well as travel with his wife in their
RV and visit their children and grandchildren.

mixed. Some enjoyed the novelty
of seeing a darker take on the concept, while others were repulsed at
the idea of creating R-rated material
out of something made for children.
Both viewpoints have their merit.
The movie is certainly looking at
the franchise through a lens that it
was never intended for, but is that
a good or bad thing? Can you take
the silliness out of Power Rangers
without undermining the spirit of
the show? Should everything Power
Rangers be limited to the children’s
demographic, or can the franchise
grow up with its audience?
Some franchises have managed it.
For instance, there is a Batman for
everybody. Next year we’ll see Ben
Affleck portray the brooding dark
knight in “Batman v Superman:
Dawn of Justice.” The year after that,
Will Arnett will voice a silly LEGO
version of the character. The 1960s
“Batman” show covered the punches with silly looking sound effects. A
few weeks ago on “Gotham,” a character plucked out their own eye.
As a fan of Kevin Conroy, the one
true voice of Batman, I have been
able to enjoy his work for my entire
life. In 1992 I was the target demographic for “Batman: The Animated Series,” when he first voiced the
character. Today I’m still the target
demographic for his most recent
performance, the upcoming M-rated video game, “Batman: Arkham
Knight.”
So it’s certainly possible for a fran-
chise to transcend its original audience, but does that mean it’s possible
for every franchise? The concept of
Batman lends itself well to a wide
range of demographics, but not every property can transition itself that
easily.
“The Smerfs” may be kid friendly
on the surface, but there are many
aspects of Smerf society that would
be very disturbing if looked through
a more critical lens. Sometimes it’s
better to just not go there.
Even Shankar admitted that his
Power Rangers fan film is something of a parody about Hollywood’s
recent habit of creating “gritty and
realistic” adaptations of children’s
entertainment.
And he’s right, his fan film may
have been an interesting take on the
franchise, but I certainly wouldn’t
want to see anything so dark from
an actual big screen release. I hope
Hollywood takes the correct message from this movie. Bad enough
we already have movies that feature Superman and Optimus Prime
executing their foes in cold blood. I
don’t need to see the Green Ranger
covered in blood after decapitating
Lord Zedd.
Maybe there’s a place for a dark
and gritty power rangers, but that
place might just be the occasional
internet fan film.
Travis Fischer is a newswriter
for Mid America Publishing and is
awaiting the gritty reboot of “Garfield and Friends.”
Legislative session of 2015
reaches halfway mark
The legislative session of 2015 is
approaching the halfway mark. Next
Friday, March 6, is the final day for
bills to come out of committee and
be eligible for floor debate. We call
this week funnel week because it
reminds us of the funnel on top of
a “meat grinder.” We will shove as
much legislation as we can through
the funnel next week. Then, we “will
turn the crank on the meat grinder”
and see how much legislation comes
out by the end of the session.
Of course, the big news this week
is the Senate passed the 10 cents per
gallon gas tax. It goes into effect on
March 1, so expect to see an increase
in prices at the pump. I was a no vote
on this tax. Roads are one of the primary responsibilities of government
and should be funded first before we
build bike trails and offer incentives
for specific programs. Once government’s core purposes are funded,
we can see if there is money left for
the “nice” things. If we need more
money for those kinds of things, taxpayers should know what that money goes toward. In my opinion, we
have deceived the taxpayer when we
say a fuel tax is the only way to pay

for roads.
This week on the Economic Growth committee, we passed
Senate Study Bill 1116, which will
provide a tax credit and other incentives to encourage the production of
bio-chemicals from the byproducts
of bio-fuels production. This sounds
like an opportunity to bring more
jobs and money into Iowa, and I was
glad to support it. It should come to
the floor later this session.
This morning, I spoke on the floor
about how much of ourselves we
could lose and still be “me.” My
point is, we can lose body parts or
functions (sight, hearing, voice, etc.)
and yet be “me.” We were all created by God and should have all the
rights of a person from the time our
chromosomes were first formed until
the time of natural death.
I proposed an amendment (SJR 9)
to the Constitution of Iowa which
says: “The unalienable right to life
of every person at any stage of development shall be recognized and
protected.” Senate Joint Resolution
9 has been assigned to the Rules and
Regulation committee. Please join
me in urging the chairman, Senator
Gronstal, to assign it to a subcommittee and move this bill forward.
I really enjoy hearing from the
people of Senate District 4. I will be
in Estherville on March 7 at 10 a.m.
at the Regional Wellness Center,
along with Representative Gassman.
On March 29, I will be holding three
town hall meetings with Representative Baxter in Wright County at 8
a.m. at the Eagle Grove Library, 9:30
a.m. at the Train Station in Clarion,

Under the Golden Dome Too
By State Representative Linda Upmeyer
House District 54

It’s hard to believe the month of
March has arrived. With the frigid temperatures we’ve been experiencing, I
am looking forward to the first signs of
a refreshing Iowa spring.
Earlier this year, the University of
Iowa President Sally Mason announced
her intent to retire at the end of the current school year. Since the announcement, questions have been raised about
the terms of her employment contract
signed in 2007 and her retirement
package recently approved by the Iowa
Board of Regents.
Upon her retirement, President Mason will become President Emeritus at
the University of Iowa. As laid out in
her 2007 employment contract, during
her first year as President Emeritus,
President Mason is expected to receive
a salary of approximately $315,000
(60% of her current salary), an office
and secretarial support. However, she
will have no teaching or service obligations at the university during this first
“transitional” year. Additionally, at this
time, it is uncertain what duties President Mason will have at the university
in the years following this transition.
Approving such a large and extravagant retirement package with no track
record at the university is irresponsible. Not requiring any level of service, while continuing to pay a public
servant a six-figure salary, is wasteful.
There are better uses of taxpayer dollars. This money should go directly
toward the education of our students,
instead it takes money away from them.
In fact, this money could be used to pay
the tuition and fees for nearly 40 Iowa
resident students during the 2015-2016
school year.
Members of the Board of Regents
have defended President Mason’s retirement package by saying it follows
tradition, noting former University of
Iowa presidents have been given the
same option since 1940. With the retirement of President Mason, the university will have two former presidents
serving in the capacity of President
Emeritus. They are Sally Mason and
Willard Boyd, who retired as president
in 1991. Mr. Boyd remains a faculty
member in the University’s College of
Law.
Compared to Iowa’s two other public
universities, the retirement options in
President Mason’s employment agreement are significantly higher. Neither
President Steven Leath of Iowa State
University nor President William Ruud
of the University of Northern Iowa
were granted tenure when they were
hired for their current positions.
In other news, next week will be the
Legislature’s first “funnel” week, which
is a deadline for legislators to pass bills
out of their respective policy committees in either the House or Senate,
in order to remain eligible for further
consideration. Appropriations, Ways
& Means, and Government Oversight
bills are exempt from the funnel rules.
If you are planning to visit the Capitol in the near future, please feel free to
stop by my office. I’d love to visit with
you. I can also always be reached at
[email protected] or 515281-4618.

Dear Editor,
Please stop the abuse that goes on in
puppy mills. Dogs are living breathing creatures who fill the same pain
that people do. Please be their voice
and stop their suffering at the hands of
uncaring heartless puppy mill owners.
Don’t let them continue to make money by causing suffering to these loving
animals. These people have no moral
conscience.

Net Neutrality scored a big win
last Thursday.
Last week the FCC voted 3-2 in favor of using Title II of the Communications Act to officially declare the
Internet a public utility, giving them
the authority to apply and enforce
the net neutrality regulations that the
courts struck down last year.
This is a huge deal and I really
should go into more depth on the
topic, but this week I really want to
talk about Power Rangers.
Earlier this week a 15-minute
Power Rangers fan film took the
Internet by storm. Of course, “fan
film” may not be the appropriate
term. Produced by Adi Shankar, directed by Joseph Kahn, and starring
Katee Sackhoff and James Van Der
Beek, the short movie had all the
production value and talent of a major motion picture, making it stand
apart from the amateur fan films that
occasionally pop up.
But what really made this movie
the talk of the virtual town wasn’t its
high end special effects or big name
talent. It was the content. Shankar’s
“bootleg universe” of Power Rangers was a far more graphic take on
the concept, at times looking more
like a Quintin Tarantino movie than
a Saturday morning kids show. (In
fact, more than a couple scenes in
the film look like they were directly
inspired by “Kill Bill”)
Filled with blood, drugs, torture,
and death, this ‘realistic,’ for lack of
a better word, applied real world logic to the premise of Power Rangers,
showing what might really happen
if a group of teenagers were drafted
into a war against alien robot invaders.
Reaction to the fan film has been
containing reforms in areas like collective bargaining.
We also want to propose giving Iowa
taxpayers a choice between the current
nine-bracket income tax system or a flat
tax. This will give Iowans the simple
option they have been asking for while
also offering the highest proportion of
savings to low and middle-income Iowans.
I personally sponsored a bill granting
immunity from civil liability for both
non-profit organizations and land owners during clean-up efforts following a
disaster. This is similar to a good samaritan provision in our code for those
who give medical intervention in a crisis situation. It would also cover volunteers as long as they are working for a
non-profit organization. If this passes, it
will be a new section in our law code.
I had the privilege of meeting with
city leaders from Garner and Eagle
Grove at the Capitol this week. The
group visited the Statehouse to discuss
issues concerning their communities
with legislators.
Representative Baxter serves on the
following Standing Committees: Judiciary, Environmental Protection, Public
Safety and Local Government; and also
serves as Vice-Chair of the Economic
Development Appropriations Subcommittee. You can contact Representative

Go Go Gritty Rangers
Since the events of last week, I received a tsunami of opposition from
my constituents against the way the gas
tax bill was pushed through committee.
Many who originally supported this
legislation, emailed me back to express
their dismay and opposition. Above all
else, I want to listen to my constituents.
In the end I voted “No” to the gas tax
increase!
Several amendments were attempted that would have made the bill more
palatable. For example, one of them
would have made the DOT accountable
to the legislature for the way it spends
its share of the new gas tax. I do not
want the “urgent road and bridge repair
funds” going to other causes.
I am already hearing rumblings. We
heard absolutely nothing about “new
construction” in this bill. Suddenly, I’m
hearing that the DOT wants to allocate
some of these funds to complete highway 20 to Sioux City. This frustrates
me! I would rather send those funds to
our County Supervisors to repair secondary roads! I highly respect and trust
my Supervisors! I think our state needs
a Dave Ramsey seminar on prioritizing
spending.
On the other hand, I’m thankful the
gas tax issue is behind us so we can
move on to other things. Expect our
caucus to move on important platform
issues over the next few weeks. You
will be hearing about positive Second
Amendment issues, protection of life
issues and conversation about real cost

Aitchison honored for
teaching excellence
Emilie Jenson

When the staff and students from
West Hancock Elementary School
were called together for a special assembly on Feb. 17, first grade teacher
Pam Aitchison had no idea she would
be the guest of honor.
Aitchison was presented with the
Golden Apple Award by KIMT for her
excellence in teaching.
“I was totally surprised,” said Aitchison. “We were just told we had something special going on that morning.”
Aitchison was nominated by one of
her current students and his mother.
“It is nice to be appreciated,” she
said. “
Aitchison has been a teacher in the
West Hancock Schools for 13 years.
She has a degree in elementary and
special education from Buena Vista
University. She spent nine years as
a special education teacher and has
spent the past four in a first grade
classroom.
“I really enjoyed special education,
but I have also enjoyed having my own
classroom and group of students.”
A typical day in first grade is spent
working with her students on reading
and math skills, and a lot of hands-on
learning.
“We do lots of experiments and
hands-on things to make learning important for the students,” she said. “It’s
good for them to know they what they
learn here they can use outside of the
classroom, too.”
Aitchison said she enjoys seeing the
students learn and thrive throughout
the year.
“They come into first grade knowing some letters and numbers and they
leave knowing how to read,” she said.
“It’s fun to watch them become so independent.”

Farm building fire
Rebecca Peter | The Leader
Garner fire fighters responded to farm building fire about 5:50 a.
m. Monday morning, at 1935 Pine Ave., Garner. A former farrowing
house, which was converted to house several goats and chickens,
was destroyed. According to Mollie Hueneman, the goats were rescued, but five of the six chickens were lost. Firemen were at the
scene until about 9:30 a.m. The probable cause of the fire was a
heat lamp, said Terry Jass, fire chief.
Garner city budget
hearing is March 10
GARNER - The public hearing for
the proposed $6.6 million budget for
the City of Garner will be held 7 p.m.,
Tuesday, March 10 in the council
chambers.
Tax askings for the city are up slightly - $1,306,057 for FY16 compared to
$1,298,645 for the current fiscal year.
The city’s property tax rate will stay
the same at $13.23767 per $1,000 valuation.
The city’s taxable value from FY15
to FY16 increased from $95,246,296
to $96,141,429.
“Financially, we’re strong,” said
Randy Lansing, city administrator.
“Obviously we have concerns yet on
how the rollback on commercial and
industrial property tax, and probably
more so on the multi-residential is
ultimately going to affect our general fund revenues. If we can keep the
housing rolling in town, then the new
values should off-set what we’re losing.”
“I think we can clearly credit Garner’s past efforts to make sure housing
continues to grow, because that adds
value. Every new house adds taxable
value.”
The library remodel/expansion project is included in the next fiscal year
budget, the scope of which will depend on the outcome of the May 4 referendum vote on borrowing $400,000
in general obligation bonds for the
project.
“It’s not going to get done in one fiscal year,” Lansing said. The city budgeted $1,025,000 for the library project for FY16 with the remainder to be
completed in FY17.
The downtown revitalization program will get underway this year. The
city was awarded $500,000 from the
Iowa Economic Development Author-
ity to renovate 14 downtown storefronts. Property owners will contribute $147,142 to the $751,567 project
and the city will chip in $104,425. The
project is expected to take two years to
complete. The FY16 budget includes
$446,711 for the project.
The city will continue to address
flooding issues with the sanitary sewer
system after heavy rains. The council
budgeted $100,000 for sewer televising and sewer slip lining and $8,000
to purchase a large pump to bypass
pumping.
“This last summer we smoke tested
the whole sanitary sewer system. We
found three or four places where we
have cross connections,” Lansing said.
“This upcoming budget has monies in
it to fix those, and then to do a lot of
televising so we can pinpoint where
[problems are] coming from.”
Other projects for the next fiscal year
include:
•Repaint the inside of north water
tower.
•$45,000 for the sidewalk replacement project. The 2015 project will
cover a six-block area from 6th to 8th
Street between State St. and Seymour.
•$171,250 for the housing rehabilitation program.
“We’re going to finish up our housing rehab program,” Lansing said. “We
have four houses done. Three more are
under construction now. We’ll probably do four more in FY15-16.”
The police department plans to purchase body cameras in FY16 at an estimated cost of $4,500. “We’re hoping
to get about half of that paid for by
a grant.” Replacement of one of the
police cars is scheduled for the FY16
budget.

scheduling. The Garner Golf Course
Foundation board is in the process of
determining rental fees, policy, and
other guidelines for the facility.
Mick said one of the critical pieces is
finding someone to manage the opening, closing, and janitorial duties of
cleanup before and after rental events.
“This is a seasonal job and would be
available as scheduled events dictate,”
he said.
In other action, the council:
•Approved a request from Bonita
Pringnitz for the city to remove a large
tree from the street right-of-way at 320
W. 4th.
•Reserved Lots 31 and 33 in Hejlik’s 2nd Subdivision for purchase by
the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura School
District for the industrial technologies
class tech house construction program
for 2015-16 and 2016-17.
•Approved submitting an application for a $5,000 grant to the Iowa
DNR’s Trees for Kids Program to
plant trees and shrubs at Tourist Park,
Central Park and on the grounds of the
Veterans Memorial Recreation Center
in 2015.
Prizes were donated by Corwith

Clinic, Iowa State Bank, K & H Cooperative Oil Co., Klein Insurance Agency, LuVerne Betterment Association,

slips. The slips go into buckets that
are located in the classrooms, office,
and lunchroom. During the assembly
a name is drawn out of each of the
buckets. That person is honored and
gets to take part in some fun. There is
a lot of cheering and clapping for each
student.
This week Mrs. Krauss had the children split up into three teams. A straw
was given to each person on each
team. An adult tossed an inflated balloon up in the air at the same time for
each group. The object of the competition was to keep the balloon up in the
air the longest. The teams found it was
harder than they thought because they
could not use their hands, arms, legs
and so on. They also learned how to
use teamwork to win.

On Friday, Feb. 27, the elementary
students at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne School in LuVerne finished
their week with an assembly in the
gym at 3 p.m.
Debra Krauss gathered the children
and staff to cheer their fellow students
in the ongoing Bucket Filler assembly.
The Bucket Filler assembly works
like this: The staff along with Mrs.
Krauss who teaches the guidance
classes, is focusing on the positives
and character traits of the students.
They report “catching each other doing
something good,” It could be something like helping each other or saying
a kind word to another. The kids seem
to be looking closely, to be able to find
and put another student’s name on the

HAS YOUR CORN FARM
LOST MONEY?
Despite China’s refusal to approve Syngenta’s GMO
seed, Syngenta continued to sell its seed to U.S.
corn farmers. When China banned U.S. corn imports,
the price of corn fell dramatically, and corn farmers
across the country lost BILLIONS of dollars.
We represent individual farmers.
Our team represented over 2000 individual farmers in the Rice GMO claim. We opposed the class
action and secured more for the farmers we represented. Our group of lawyers will continue
meeting with farmers with respect to each farmer’s individual Syngenta claim.

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will
have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil
and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3
boxes. To solve a sudoku,
the numbers 1 through 9
must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once
in each row, column and
box. You can figure out
the order in which the
numbers will appear by
using the numeric clues
already provided in the
boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it
gets to solve the puzzle!

Clear Lake Care Center receives person directed care certification
By Travis Fischer
A change is sweeping the nation
when it comes to care centers. Nursing
homes across the country are striving
to receive certification for Person Directed Care, a new philosophy on how
best to take care of elderly care center
residents.
ABCM Corporation’s Oakwood
Care Center in Clear Lake is among
the latest of facilities to receive their
Person Directed Care certification.
“It’s a lot about having personal
choices,” said Janice McCoy, a social worker with ABCM Corporation.
“Here we do everything we can to
meet your schedule.”
For decades, the standard practice in
nursing homes was one of rigid schedules and procedure. The daily lives of
residents were set to a strict routine,
from when they woke up, to what they
did during the day, and right down to
what foods they ate. Essentially treated more like children than adults.
Likewise, the performances of nurses was judged by how effectively they
kept residents to that schedule, rather
than the quality of care they were able
to give to any particular resident.
“The first time I got in trouble as a
nurse was when I was spending too
much time with the residents,” said
Sheri Weaver-Isvik of the Oakwood
powerment to customer service and
employee learning. While many of the
benchmark requirements were already
being met at Oakwood Care Center,
others took some extra effort to reach.
It took Oakwood Care Center seven
years of work adjusting their policies
and practices before they met all 94
benchmarks.
“It wasn’t quite as easy as we thought
it was going to be,” said Weaver-Isvik.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s so rewarding. We have an excellent team of
caregivers.”
However, the work has paid off.
Oakwood Care Center received their
certification on February 11 and celebrated with a party attended by residents, staff, and other members of
ABCM Corporation, including CEO
Richard Allbee.
“I’m really proud of your team,”
said Allbee. “We’ve come a long way
in this business. It takes a lot of work,
a lot of effort, and a lot of great people.”
Oakwood Care Center is the third
ABCM owned care center to receive
their Person Directed Care certification.
The effort has been appreciated by
the residents at Oakwood Care Center
as well. Residents have been happy
with the freedom to choose their own
meals, set their own schedules, and
decide what activities they want to fill
their days with.
Care Center.
With Person Directed Care, this
methodology is changing. A new emphasis is placed on individual freedom
for the residents and creating a customized level of care that suits their
needs without intruding on their personal habits.
“We’re going away from the medical model of a hospital-like setting and
becoming a home for residents,” said
McCoy.
The process to get certified as a Person Directed Care facility is not an
easy one. There are 94 benchmarks
the facility must meet that measures
everything from relationships and em-
ABCM CED Richard Allbee congratulates Oakwood Care Center for
reaching their goal of Person Directed Care.
“It couldn’t get any better,” said
Hazel Miller, one of the residents at
Oakwood Care Center. “You’re not
tied down by anybody. If you decide
to go downtown, you’re allowed to go.
They’re marvelous.”

CARDINAL
Payton
Stadtlander
by Megan Finley
Tailgating and being a part of the Cardinal Cage are two of Payton Stadtlander’s
favorite high school memories. Payton was born on Nov. 9, 1996, and is the son of
Ross and Angela Stadtlander. Payton has a brother, Drake, and he also has a dog
named Daisy.
Payton has many favorites including
listening to heavy metal music, the color
red, wearing Affliction t-shirts, watching
The Notebook and Orange Is the New
Black, Big Macs from McDonald’s,
synchronized swimming and Amanda
Bynes. Payton’s favorite quote is “Sixty
percent of the time it works every time.”
A fun fact about Payton is that he can
put his foot behind his head. Some of his
hobbies include snowmobiling, sword
fighting, miniature golfing and arm
wrestling. Payton’s biggest pet peeve is
when people steal his shoes.
A celebrity that Payton thinks he most
looks like is Kate Upton. If Payton could
be any animal, he would choose to be a
Liger because they are the most dominant animals. Payton also said that if he could
win a lifetime supply of anything, he would want Chucky Cheese tokens.
Payton’s favorite homecoming memory is senior sweep. His advice to underclassmen is to watch the wall on turn four. Being a successful stay-at-home dad
successfully running his own business is Payton’s dream job. After high school
Payton is most looking forward to getting all the college girls.
While in high school Payton has participated in cross country, basketball, baseball, golf, Student Council, National Honor Society and choir as well as being a
sound and lighting technician. Payton’s future plans are to attend Iowa State.`
Dylan
Brown
by Riannan Kadrlik
The number one thing on Dylan Brown’s bucket list is to travel the world. Dylan
was born on Nov. 17, 1996. His parents are James and Kari Brown, and he has two
sisters, Taylor and Brooklyn. Dylan also has a pet dog named Jasper. Dylan’s dad
is his role model because he teaches him
how to be successful in life and pushes
him to be better.
Dylan enjoys watching Swamp People
and Due Date, listening to country music, cheering on the Chargers, Snapchatting his friends and eating circus peanuts, fresh pineapple and cookie dough
ice cream. Some more of his favorites
include Will Ferrell, Christmas, lime
green, shop classes and football. The
best birthday present he has received is
a shotgun. His hobbies are shooting guns
and fishing.
When Dylan gets nervous, he taps his
pen, and his biggest pet peeve is when
people bother him while he is busy.
Dylan’s dream vacation is to go to Hawaii. If Dylan could win a lifetime supply of anything, it would be Mountain Dew, and Dylan would walk a day in the
shoes of Jason Aldean because Dylan thinks that Jason has an interesting life.
In high school Dylan has been involved with FFA and golf. Hanging out with
people from school is his favorite homecoming memory, and laughing and being
able to hang out with friends is his favorite high school memory. The high school
achievement Dylan is most proud of is that he has never failed a class. His advice
to underclassmen is to be persistent and to never cheat off friends –you will get
caught.
After high school Dylan is looking forward to getting a full-time job. His dream
job is to own a farm and cattle and to become a cattle farmer.
National Honor Society
to Hold Blood Drive
by Tiara Van Gerpen
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura National Honor Society is hosting a blood
drive sponsored by LifeServe Blood
Center on Friday, March 6. NHS members are in charge of set up, clean up,
recruiting students to donate and taking
care of those who have just donated
blood.
LifeServe is offering time slots to donate from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; those wanting to donate must weigh at least 120
pounds and be at least 16 years old.
To sign up, contact an NHS member, Mrs. Kerry Neuberger or Mr. Erik
Jolivette. They will provide you with
a sheet that needs to be filled out and
returned. Students donating for the first
time will need a signature from a parent
or guardian.
Students who sign up to donate are
asked to eat a good breakfast and drink
plenty of fluids before their scheduled
appointment.
Once students have arrived to donate,
they check in, fill out a questionnaire,
go through a mini physical to check
their temperature, weight, and hemoglobin and finally, if healthy, get to donate blood.
After giving blood students are
walked back to a table by an NHS
member and treated to complimentary
juice and snacks to reenergize their
bodies. Those who donate leave with
the satisfaction that their donation has
the potential to save three people.
Mikah’s Musings
School Spirit
by Mikah Millard
School spirit. It’s the backbone to every pep rally, student section and homecoming parade. From the time we learn
the school song in kindergarten to the
day we put on our graduation gowns as
seniors, school spirit has always been
a part of our lives. We stand and cheer
at sporting events, we sing along to the
school song and we always hope that
the game is in our favor. But why?
Personally, I think school spirit isn’t
just supporting the school and its administrators but supporting one’s fellow classmates. School spirit is even
more evident this time of year when
GHV is in the midst of district tournaments in basketball, concerts in choir
and band and even a state competition
in wrestling. The halls of GHV are
coursing with school spirit. Even those
who can’t wait to graduate find it easy
to root for their home team.
While school spirit has a lot to do with
cheering as loudly as you can, it’s also
a way of identifying with your school.
When people from other towns ask
where we’re from, we tend to answer
GHV instead of our hometown. We
have students here not only from Garner, Hayfield and Ventura but also from
places like Mason City, Clear Lake and
Belmond as well. And whether they
walk to school or have a twenty-minute
drive, most will answer “GHV” when
asked where they’re from.
Walking in the same hallways gives
us all a common purpose. We may
not live in the same town or have the
same classes or hang out with the same
friends, but we all have a little love for
the Cardinal mascot whether we’d like
to admit or not. Not just students, but
alumni and community members as
well. School spirit is something that
everyone can participate in, and I think
that’s what makes it noteworthy. So
next time you find yourself bored with
nothing to do, check out the school calendar and see what’s on the agenda.
You never know when the next opportunity to be “loud and proud” will present itself.
CHRONICLE
Hailey
Gilliland
by Sara Hoover
Going skydiving is Hailey Gilliland’s number one thing on her bucket list. Hailey was born Feb. 9, 1997. Her favorite childhood memory is coming to Garner to
visit her grandma.
Among Hailey’s favorites are the movie and book series The Hunger Games,
the TV show American Horror Story,
metal music, Jennifer Lawrence, the
quote “Can’t do it right, don’t do it at
all,” cheering for the Texans, pixie sticks,
Monster, the color red, getting money for
her birthday, kiwi fruit, vanilla ice cream,
life skills, Snapchat and softball, and her
favorite holiday is her birthday.
One fun fact about Hailey is that she
is very flexible. Hailey’s dream vacation
is to travel the world or go to Australia,
and her hobbies are reading, doing hair
and watching movies. She would love a
lifetime supply of pickles.
Hailey’s biggest pet peeve is people
who act stupid. When she’s nervous,
she tends to shake her leg and bounce
her knee. If she could be any animal, she
would be a zebra because you can’t tell if they’re black or white.
Hailey’s role model is Jennifer Lawrence because she is funny and doesn’t care
what people think. Hailey would rather be herself than walk in someone else’s
shoes because she likes “being me.”
Dancing with her friends at the dance is Hailey’s favorite homecoming memory,
and taking western cultures with Grace Hunt is her favorite high school memory.
The high school achievement she is most proud of is not getting into fistfights for
the last two years in school. Stay calm is the best advice she has gotten this year,
and Hailey advises underclassmen to listen to upperclassmen and don’t be rude.
Hailey is looking forward to graduating. Her future plans are to become her
dream job of being a hairdresser and have a family.
Rosie
Kozisek
by Anna Oppedahl
If Rosie Kozisek could win a lifetime supply of anything, she would like to have
BBQ wings. Rosie was born on April 2, 1997, to her parents Barbra and Scott
Kozisek. Rosie has two siblings, Katrina and Jakub, and she has a dog, Rags.
Rosie has lots of favorites that include
reading the book Alice in Wonderland,
the TV show Once Upon a Time, watching Phantom of the Opera, listening to
any type of music, celebrating Christmas
and the color white. Rosie enjoys eating
Whatchamacallits, strawberry flavored
ice cream, star fruit, Kraft food and eating at The Other Place in Clear Lake
(where she also works as a hostess). Vocal is Rosie’s favorite high school class,
and she enjoys watching basketball,
cheering on the Chicago Bears and playing My Talking Tom on her phone. Her
favorite birthday present ever is a Barbie
baking set. “You are enough. You are so
enough. It’s unbelievable how enough
you are” by Sierra Boggess is a favorite
quote of Rosie’s.
A fun fact about Rosie is that she accepts people for who they are. Her biggest
pet peeve is when people lie to her, and her nervous habit is biting her nails. Singing, eating and sleeping are Rosie’s hobbies. Going to New York is Rosie’s dream
vacation, and Christina Grimmie is the celebrity Rosie thinks she most resembles.
If Rosie could be an animal, she would be a bird because “if you’re a bird, I’m a
bird.”
Sierra Boggess is Rosie’s role model because she’s perfect, and Rosie would love
to walk in her shoes for a day, but she doesn’t know Sierra’s shoe size. Dancing
by herself at homecoming is Rosie’s favorite homecoming memory, and speech
contest is her overall favorite high school memory. Being in speech is the high
school achievement of which Rosie is most proud. During high school Rosie has
been involved in choir, speech and the fall and spring plays.
The best advice Rosie has been given this year is “just be who you wanna be.”
Rosie’s advice to underclassmen is to accept yourself and you’ll accept others too.
After high school Rosie is looking forward to attending college at Santa Barbara.
Her dream job is anything in theater or acting.
Tanner
Maas
by Riannan Kadrlik
Get all of your assignments finished and don’t fall behind is Tanner Maas’s advice to underclassmen. Tanner was born on Nov. 26, 1996. His parents are Tim
and Rita Maas, and he has a sister, Felicia, and a brother, Cody. He has two dogs,
a yellow lab named Neon and a chocolate lab named Buddy. Tanner’s favorite
childhood memory is going to England
to see his uncle Pete.
Tanner enjoys reading Diesel Power, watching Gold Rush and Fast Five,
listening to country music, cheering for
the Denver Broncos and Snapchatting
his friends. Some more of his favorites
include Christmas, John Deere, the color blue, Skittles, Rib Crib, strawberries,
shop classes and football. His favorite
birthday present he has ever received
was money. The lyrics “If you can’t
live it down, might as well live it up”
by Brantley Gilbert is Tanner’s favorite quote, and if he could walk a day in
someone else’s shoes, it would be Brantley Gilbert’s because he is Tanner’s favorite country singer. His favorite celebrity is
Willy Robertson, but Tanner thinks he looks most like Jace Robertson from Duck
Dynasty. The Robertson family also serves as his role models because they are
rednecks and talk about Christ, and they are just awesome.
One fun fact about Tanner is that he likes to go to Canada and fish. Getting a nice
truck is the number one thing on his bucket list, and his dream vacation is to go to
Alaska. Tanner’s hobbies are hunting and fishing. When Tanner gets nervous, he
bites his fingernails, and his biggest pet peeve is when someone cuts into his conversation. If Tanner could be an animal, it would be a cheetah because they are fast
and agile. Mountain Dew would be what Tanner would win if he won a lifetime
supply of anything.
Tanner’s favorite high school and homecoming memories are winning everything in a senior sweep his senior year and being a part of the tug-o-war team. In
high school, he has been involved in football and FFA. Being in FFA for four years
is the achievement of which he is most proud.
After high school, Tanner is looking forward to making money and getting a
good job. His future plans are to have a full-time job at Zinpro and to get a nice
truck. Tanner’s dream job is to be a professional hunter or fisherman.
Dane
Neuberger
by Mallory Johnson
The number one thing on Dane Neuberger’s bucket list is to go to see the pyramids in Egypt. Dane is the son of Kerry Neuberger and the late Dave Neuberger
II and has a brother, Derek. Dane was born on Oct. 8, 1996, and has a dog named
Quinn.
Dane’s favorites include the book series Game of Thrones, the television
shows Castle and Game of Thrones,
the movie Training Day, country music,
Tom Cruise, Christmas, the Iowa State
Cyclones, Kit-Kats, Under Armor, the
color red, Buffalo Wild Wings, strawberries, vanilla ice cream, cross country,
Flixster and mock trial. Dane’s favorite
birthday present is cash, and his favorite quote is “All my life, I have always
finished the race” by Louis Zamperini.
Dane’s hobbies are reading, writing,
hanging out with friends and playing
video games.
A fun fact about Dane is that he is good
at doing accents, and his dream vacation
is going to Rome or Greece. Dane’s nervous habit is shaking his leg, and his biggest pet peeve is when people step on his heels while he’s walking.
Dane’s favorite childhood memory is spending lazy days on the boat with his
dad, and his favorite high school memory is getting the lead in the fall musical
his senior year. If Dane could be an animal, he would be a penguin because then
he could be deceptively cute and cuddly. The celebrity Dane thinks he looks most
like is Simon Pegg, and if he could win a lifetime supply of something, it would be
gold.
Dane’s role model is his dad because “he lived his life to the fullest with both
honor and integrity,” and if he could walk in someone else’s shoes for a day, it
would be Gerald Butler’s so he can randomly shout “This is Sparta!”
Dane’s favorite homecoming memory is helping with the float, and the high
school achievement of which he is most proud is getting inducted into the National
Honor Society. The best advice Dane has been given this year is “Be true to who
you are, and do what you love” and his advice to underclassmen is “Seniors are
always right.”
During high school Dane has been involved in football, golf, cross country, drama, speech, band, choir and NHS. After high school Dane is most looking forward
to seeing what the world can offer him and living his life to the fullest. After high
school Dane plans to join the Air Force, and his dream job is getting paid to travel
the world seeing or showing museums. Angela
O’Hara
by Anna Oppedahl
Going to Australia is Angela O’Hara’s dream vacation. Angela, born on Sept
7, 1996, is the daughter of Steve and Robin O’Hara. Angela has a sister, Tamara,
and a brother, Hunter. She also has a cat,
Minion, and a dog, Scooter.
Angela has many favorites that include
the TV show One Tree Hill, the movie
21 Jump Street, listening to any type of
music, the color grey, celebrity Scotty
McCreery and celebrating the Fourth of
July. Angela also likes Texas Roadhouse,
eating Milk Duds and strawberries and
cheering on the Arizona Cardinals, and
her favorite sports are cross country and
track.
Twirling her hair is Angela’s nervous
habit. Angela’s pet peeve is when people
smack their gum. If Angela could be an
animal, she would be a dog because they
are cute, and if she could have a lifetime
supply of something, she would want
Toaster Strudels. Running and reading are Angela’s hobbies.
Being left behind at state cross country her freshman year with Courtney Field
and getting free donuts is Angela’s favorite high school memory, and “senior
sweep” is Angela’s favorite Homecoming memory. Lettering in track and cross
country is the high school achievement of which Angela is most proud. During
high school Angela has been involved in FFA, cross country and track. Angela is
most looking forward to going to college where she plans to study psychology. Her
dream job is to be a psychologist.
Corey
Hauptmann
by Mallory Johnson
Corey Donald Hauptmann’s dream vacation is a trip to the Kanto Region in the
Pokémon universe. Corey was born on Nov. 1, 1996, and is the son of Eldon and
Jennifer Hauptmann and has three siblings: Bradley, Cole and Brooke. He also has
a rat terrier named Lacey.
Corey’s favorites include The Lorax,
How I Met Your Mother, The Little Mermaid, country music, the New England
Patriots, Skittles, Nike, purple, McDonald’s, papayas, cookies and cream ice
cream, study hall, Snapchat and football.
Corey’s favorite holiday is JJ Loschen’s
birthday, and his favorite birthday present is money. His hobbies are weightlifting, sports, video games and Pokémon.
A couple fun facts about Corey are that
he likes carrots and he gives great high
fives. Corey’s nervous habit is shaking
his legs, and his biggest pet peeve is
when people think that Ash is a better
Pokémon trainer than Red. The celebrity Corey thinks he looks most like is a
young Brett Favre, and if he could be an animal, he would be a narwhal because
they are the unicorns of the sea.
The number one thing on Corey’s bucket list is to go to the outback in Australia,
and if he could win a lifetime supply of something, it would be money.
Corey’s favorite childhood memory is going to his brother Brad’s first football
playoff game, and his favorite high school memory is the #support Twitter discussion.
Corey’s role model is Jeremy Gouge because “He puts most of his time into
whatever he can,” and he would walk in Mr. Van Dusseldorp’s shoes for a day
because it seems as if he has most everything figured out except girls, and no one
really has them figured out.
Corey’s favorite quote is when the seniors chanted “Senior Sweep” at homecoming and winter formal, and his favorite homecoming memory is scoring a touchdown in the homecoming game against Osage.
The high school achievement of which Corey is most proud is knowing Colby
Reid, and Corey’s advice to underclassmen is to “run the spread.”
In high school Corey has been involved in SADD, Teen Council, NHS, YIELD,
youth group, band, football, basketball, soccer, track and the strength and conditioning program.
After high school Corey plans to attend college and is most looking forward to

Kamille Kronemann, West Hancock
Alumni, is continuing her running
career at the collegiate level. Kamille
spent last year at Minnesota State
Mankato and participated as a redshirted athlete in open events during
Education. She also a member of the
track and field team. The women’s
team is currently ranked #1 in the
nation amongst all junior colleges.
Kamille has qualified for five events
at the national meet in Albuquerque,
New Mexico on March 6 and 7. Kamille is part of the 4 x 800 meter relay
which is currently ranked # 1 in the
nation. Also Kamille will most likely
be participating in the 800 run where
she is ranked #6 in the nation. She has
also qualified in the 600(16th), and
1000(12th) meter runs and the 4 x 400
relay but will most likely not compete
in all those events. She may run in the
4000 meter distance medle which is
also ranked #1 in the nation. The 4 x
800 team broke the school record only
running the race one time this season.
Kamille has made the all-time top ten
list for Iowa Central for the 600, 800
and 1000 meter races.
GHV has been one of the top girls’
basketball programs in the North Iowa
Conference since Garner-Hayfield and
Ventura joined forces in 2012. Cardinal coach Matt Erpelding is hoping to
see his GHV squad continue that trend
in upcoming seasons as a new era in
conference play begins next year. The
North Iowa Conference will exist no
longer as GHV will join eight other
schools in the western division of the
newly formed Top of Iowa Conference. In this final season of NIC play
the Cardinal girls treated GHV fans to
another season of exciting basketball.
The Cardinals completed the season
with an overall record of 16 – 8. GHV
finished NIC play in third place at 14
– 6 and saw their season end in a regional semi final loss at Clear Lake.
The Cards will need some younger players to step into key roles next
year as GHV will graduate five senior
regulars. Heading the list of seniors is
Emily Spilman. Emily carried a scoring average of 9.8 ppg while leading
the team in three-point shooting with
31 treys. Spilman was a solid allaround player collecting 95 steals, 70
rebounds and 58 assists in her final
season as a Cardinal.
Mackenzie Haag is another solid
senior that will be tough to replace.
Mackenzie scored 5.3 ppg while finishing with 92 rebounds, 79 assists
and 23 three-pointers.
GHV relied on two senior post players in Grace Tusha and Sydney Young.
Tusha scored 6.3 ppg with 122 rebounds while Young averaged 5.6 ppg
with 128 rebounds. Tiara Van Gerpen
proved to be a defensive dynamo for
the Cardinals and was credited with 31
steals on the year.
Erpelding will look to rebuild next
season around two returning starters.
Sophomore Hannah Lau led the team
in scoring, averaging 11.9 ppg while
grabbing 147 rebounds. Freshman
Jillian Heitland gained valuable experience through the year, finishing
with a 6.7 ppg scoring average and 79
rebounds. Also contributing in reserve
roles for GHV were juniors Taryn Carolus and Payton Bamrick.
Each season GHV’s statistical guru
Eric Formanek compiles records for
every Cardinal sport. An abbreviated
version of GHV’s girls’ basketball best
all-time efforts follows.

Cardinal Wrestling Review
Sam Cataldo, Junior
First Team
Payton James, Junior
Second Team
With the addition of three teams to
the North Iowa Conference, earning a
spot on one of the all-conference rosters became even more challenging
for league performers. After finishing
fourth overall in the final league standings, GVH placed three boys being on
the various all-conference lists.
Junior standout Sam Cataldo earned
first team all-conference honors after
his impressive season. Cataldo was
ranked sixth among league players
in the scoring column after averaging 18.65 points per game. Cataldo
finished second overall in rebounding (192) and third overall in field
goal percentage (64%). Sam was also
GHV’s monster-in-the-middle, completing the conference season with 87
blocked shots which was over three
times more than the second-ranked
player in that category.
Another junior, Payton James, was
selected to the NIC’s second team
rosters. James finished the conference
season averaging just over 10 ppg after connecting on 52% of his field goal
attempts. Payton was GHV’s main perimeter threat, ranking fourth among
NIC players in three-point field goal
percentage (48%) and finishing sixth
overall in made three-pointers (44).
Sophomore Johnathan O’Connor
was named to the NIC’s Honorable
Mention squad. O’Conner was one
of GHV’s most consistent shooters,
connecting on 49% of his field goal
attempts, including 41% of his threepoint shots.
In the NIC’s final season of existence, Forest City again earned the
conference title with an overall record
of 19-1. GHV finished with a record
of 15 – 5 while ranking among the top
three spots in many of the team statistical categories.
A complete listing of the North Iowa
Conference all-conference rosters follows.

If the events of the recently completed season are any indication, GHV
wrestling fans should be excited about
the future of the Cardinal program. The
Cardinal squad showed great improvement through the year and with no seniors on the roster next season should
be even more successful.
As a team, GHV finished the year
with a dual record of 18 – 17. While
that mark is just over .500, it is truly an
accomplishment considering the few
dual victories that had been recorded
by the Cards over the past few seasons.
The Cardinal roster filled almost all
weight classes this season and that aspect will no doubt get even better considering the number of underclassmen
on the squad and the growing strength
of GHV’s youth program.
GHV 160-pounder Conner Shaw was
one of the Cardinals’ bright spots of the
season. Shaw finished the season with
a sixth place medal at the state meet
while becoming the program’s single
season top wrestler with an overall record of 50-8. The Cardinal sophomore
was also the team’s top scorer with 308
points while leading GHV with 30 pins
and 104 takedowns.
Cade Baker also competed at the
state meet but was not able to bring
home any hardware. Baker was GHV’s
second leading scorer with 307 points
while finishing the season ranked second all time in wins with a record of
47 – 6 at 170 pounds. Cade recorded
71 takedowns on the season and won
26 matches by fall. Baker will no doubt
return for his senior year motivated to
bring home a medal from Des Moines.
Cardinal junior Connor Smith also
completed an impressive season as
he finished with an overall record of
36 – 15 at 195 pounds. Smith was responsible for scoring 239 points for the
Cards while recording 18 pins and 36
takedowns. Dalton Basinger was another junior who played a major role in
GHV’s successful season. Basinger recorded 11 pins on the year while going
22 – 24 overall.
GHV relied on a strong sophomore
class to fill the roster this season and
that group of wrestlers performed very
well considering their youth. Austin
Case finished 34 – 17 at 106 pounds
while scoring 231 points on 23 pins.
Andrew Dornbier did a solid job of
filling the 120-pound slot. Dornbier
finished 25 – 14 overall with 17 pins.
Colyn Schoneman picked up 15 pins
while going 22 – 13 on the season
while Grady Umbarger scored 10 pins
with a record of 18-22.
Six freshmen were regulars in the
GHV varsity lineup throughout the
season. Tyler Obermann compiled a
5 - 9 record at 113 pounds while Jade
Pringnitz went 6 – 8 at 138 pounds. Anthony Sherwood completed a respectable freshmen season at 138 pounds,
picking up 10 pins while finishing at
19 – 27 overall. Other freshmen that
saw action at the varsity level included
Spencer Formanek, John Hulbert and
Dane Whipple.
It’s been a few years since GHV statistician Eric Formanek needed to make
significant additions to the Cardinal
Wrestling Record Book. A number of
new entries to the book needed to be
added this season. A portion of that record book that lists some of the all-time
best efforts for Cardinal wrestlers follows.

Snow, snow, go away…
Rebecca Peter | The Leader
Don’t put those shovels and snow blowers away yet! Another blast of winter surged through North Iowa on Wednesday, dumping about
4.5 inches of snow on Feb. 25-26. Snow and blowing occurred again on Tuesday. Above: Heather Hook and family (Andrew, K.C., Adyson
and Kalynn) scoop off the driveway of their Garner residence.
