Measuring Academic Progress
Westfall High School welcomed four new teachers
Westfall Middle School (WMS) is using MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) to gain
understanding of each student’s academic level. This gives teachers the power to help individual students excel. MAP is a computerized adaptive assessments tool that makes it possible for
teachers to meet their students’ needs, one child at a time.
Twice during this school year and as each new student enters WMS, an on line MAP assessment will be given to gain students’ ready to learn levels focusing on math. Students’ ready to
learn programs are available within twenty-four hours. Student reports are generated to identify strengths and needs to allow students to be placed in enrichment and intervention periods.
The program allows the WMS staff to meet with students to strengthen academic progress
beyond the instruction in daily core math classes.
MAP assessments provide details, actionable data, about where a child is on their unique
learning path. Ready to learn student learning targets are provided in the individual student
reports. This new testing environment engages students without the traditional paper pencil
test. MAP dynamically adapts to a student’s responses as they take the test.
-Answer a question correctly and the test presents a more challenging item
-Miss a question and MAP offers a simpler item
In this way, the test narrows in on a student’s learning level, engaging them in content that
allows them to succeed. MAP dynamically adapts to a student’s responses – as they take the test.

What do WMS students think? “It gives me an opportunity to try a harder question. That
doesn’t happen with paper pencil tests.” “ We like taking our tests on the computer. It’s more
challenging.”
Westfall High School welcomed four new teachers to the staff for the 2012-2013 school year.
Each of them brings a wealth of perspective and knowledge to their new positions.
Matt Carson is a graduate of Wilmington College. He is a resident of Hillsboro, and come
from the school of Leesburg-Fairfield, where he served in the roles of teacher, basketball coach,
and athletic director in the last five years. I am an avid Ohio State football fan, and in my free
time enjoy watching them along with the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, and Ohio State
Men’s basketball. He also enjoys playing golf and umpiring baseball in my free time. Mr. Carson
is excited to be at Westfall High School and is looking forward to starting the school year. He
will be teaching world studies.
Sara Blake is a proud graduate of Cincinnati Christian University, where she received her
undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance in 2008. Post-graduation, she went on to complete
additional studies in music education at Ashland University. Most recently, she began work on a
graduate degree at Capital University, through the Conservatory’s Kodaly program in secondary
choral music education. She began her teaching career at Central Crossing High School, where
she earned many accolades and awards throughout the two years that she served as the director
of the show choir, “Excelsior”. Mrs. Blake is looking forward to her first year as the Choir
Director at Westfall Junior and Senior High Schools. She currently resides in Ashville, with her
husband and beloved golden retriever. Mrs. Blake will be heading up the vocal music department.
Ms. Anne Kleinhenz is in her fourth year teaching high school science. This past year she
taught at Jefferson Township in Dayton. Before that she taught in Lake Havasu City, Arizona
(home of the London Bridge). Her interests include photography, the environment, and coaching shot put and discus. Ms. Kleinhenz is looking forward to this coming school year and can’t
wait to get to know all of her new students. She will be teaching physical science and earth science.
Mr. Wil Breyer is a new intervention specialist at Westfall High School. He will also be coaching varsity wrestling and middle school football. Mr. Breyer grew up in the small town of Oxford
Michigan where he participated in football, wrestling and baseball. He was an all-state football
player and a wrestling state champion. He received a scholarship to the University of Michigan
where he earned his
undergraduate degree is
in physical education
and health. He earned a
masters degree in special
education from Grand
Canyon University. Mr.
Breyer currently lives
with his brother and his
dog, Teddy, in Columbus.
He is looking forward to
a new and exciting life
here at Westfall High
School.

The homecoming banners were made
by the elementary classrooms. This
activity was organized by our newly
forming student council. The winning
banner was Mrs. McClelland’s 1st grade.
2nd place went to Mrs. Wippel’s 5th grade
Westfall Elementary Provides Volunteer Training
Westfall Elementary Title teachers for Reading and Math recently trained 40 volunteers on
how to support student learning. The volunteers were comprised of parents, grandparents and
high school students recommended by their principal or guidance counselor. In conjunction
with the volunteer trainings, three sessions of make it/take it occurred throughout the day and
evening. In the sessions attendees were able to make games and manipulatives to help learners
at all elementary levels in developing skills and concepts in math, reading and language arts.
This event was planned and carried out by Mrs. Gaus, Mrs. Counts, Mrs. Sharrett, Ms. Cole and
Mrs. Stadt, WES title staff.
Cara S. Riddel
Superintendent
homeroom. Mr. Dollison’s fifth grade
homeroom was the People’s Choice
winner. The student council leaders took
the banners to the football field for the
homecoming game and hung them
around the fence.
The end of the first quarter is quickly approaching. Occasionally, we hear of a student who
needs a “little extra help” with their school work. Parents can often feel frustrated when seeking
help for their children. I am pleased to say that Westfall is now offering a solution. Westfall will
begin providing after school tutoring to Westfall students for free. This service will be offered at
each building for elementary, middle and high school students. Building principals will be
scheduling these after school study tables for three days each week during the weeks when
school is in session. Each session will last up to two hours. This is a great way to help students
succeed. It is our hope that parents will take full advantage of this opportunity. For more
information, parents should contact the building principal, guidance counselor, or dean of
student at their child’s school. At Westfall, we recognize that parents are our most important
partners in education.
