Exercise 1 - madametussaudslespakket.nl
Barack Obama, Justin Timberlake, David Beckham … Where else than at
Madame Tussauds Amsterdam can you stand face to face with all the stars
of yesterday and today? Stars who have influenced our history and will
colour our future!
Madame Tussauds Amsterdam is the ideal destination for a school trip
that’s not only informative but a whole lot of fun as well!
Take a spectacular journey through time with your students. The journey
starts in the Golden Age, with merchant Claas Janszoon telling you all about
the glory days of the Dutch East India Company and introducing you to the
most prominent people from the 17th century. After that, we leap through
time to the present day.
Nowhere else will you meet so many famous faces in one place. From movie
stars to sports heroes, and from world leaders to national and international
artists - Madame Tussauds has something for everyone!
What’s more, Madame Tussauds has gone interactive. Try your hand at
our celebrities’ jobs. Rule the country from the office of Prime Minister
Balkenende, for example, or sneak into the painting next to the Mona Lisa.
If you’re more of a fashion buff, then supermodel Doutzen Kroes is waiting
for you to join her on the catwalk. Perhaps you prefer training your abs with
David Beckham or practise your ball skills with no one less than Ronaldinho
himself. Don’t forget your camera!

This is the Madame Tussauds teaching package, specially developed for
secondary school students.
The teaching material provides a good basis for a school trip to Madame
Tussauds Amsterdam and offers a fun and educational approach to
introducing students to various themes that form part of their regular
syllabus as well as at Madame Tussauds Amsterdam: the Golden Age, art,
the Dutch Royal house and world leaders. Naturally, we also explain who
Madame Tussaud is and how a wax figure is made.
Learning objectives
Students develop themselves on the following points:
After the visit
Madame Tussauds Amsterdam attaches great importance to the opinions
of its visitors. Did the attraction meet your expectations? Were there
elements you found were missing or would have preferred to be different?
And which stars would you like to see at Madame Tussauds if you could
choose?
Please give us your feedback by filling in the brief questionnaire at the
so-called ‘Merlin pillar’ after your visit to Madame Tussauds.
Independently carry out assignments in class
Learn how to work together in small groups
Prepare a simple presentation
Think and work creatively
Your viewpoint is important to us! You are also welcome to e-mail your
feedback to [email protected].
Preparation
The teaching material gives you the opportunity to encourage your
students to participate actively in the lessons. Special worksheets have
been developed for the students for this purpose. The topics covered in the
teaching material fit in well with the subject matter of current school
curricula. You can copy these worksheets and hand them out in class.
The assignments can be carried out before or after the visit to Madame
Tussauds. The teaching material can be used in history class, or for arts and
culture subjects or as project material.
In addition to the education package, our website:
www.madametussauds.nl also provides background information to give
you the opportunity for a more in-depth coverage of certain topics.

One tip when you visit
Why not take a few disposable cameras along to Madame Tussauds
Amsterdam? Your students can then take photos of one another with
their favourite stars.

and/or in magazines or books.
Next, ask them to analyse the
various sculptures, their artists

Exercise 3
Figures can be made from a variety of
materials. At Madame Tussauds, wax is
used, because it is the best material for
making the figures appear lifelike.
Of course, a wax figure also includes other
materials:
Photos - Clay - Metal - Fibreglass
This exercise encourages students to think
about the different materials and to
ascertain how suitable each material is
for copying a specific shape.

Many famous artists have painted self-portraits,
including:
Exercise 1
A self-portrait says a lot about a person. It also shows
the fashions of the time, how people lived and can also
tell us more about important events.
The aim of this exercise is to
encourage students
to compare various self portra
its with different
interpretations. This should lea
d to discussion s about
the selected images. The clothin

ges tures and foregrounds and
backgrounds can reveal
a lot about the per son in the
painting.
Ensure that, when viewing the

The aim of this assignment is to encourage students to discover their own personality.

Marie Grosholtz was born in the Alsace in 1761.
Dr Curtius taught her how to make wax figures.
Her first wax figure was of Voltaire. Word of her talent
quickly spread and Louis XVI asked her to come and
teach at the court in Versailles. Madame Tussaud
decided to go to England in the year 1802. There she
travelled with her exhibition for years.
At the age of 74, Madame Tussaud decided to give her
exhibition a permanent venue in the city of London, at
Baker Street Bazaar.
Marie Tussaud created her final self-portrait at the
age of 80.
Nowadays, wax figures can be admired in cities all over
the world, including Berlin / London / Hong Kong /
New York, Washington, Shanghai, Hollywood and Las
Vegas. The first Madame Tussauds in the Netherlands
was opened in Amsterdam in 1970, after which the
attraction moved from Kalverstraat to the Dam in 1991.
