Our school introduces a new learner attribute to students every other
month. This month, our attribute is to “Encourage Diversity”.
Throughout the month, students will develop vocabulary associated
with this attribute.
Some example statements associated with the Encouraging Diversity
attribute are:

Positive aspects of learning are reviewed regularly in assemblies, on
announcements and in classrooms.
Parent Advisory Council
Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings take place once each month in the evening. The date for the next meeting will be June
16 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. All parents are welcome! Come and join in; participate in your children’s school. Childcare and snacks
are provided.

We would like to congratulate the following classes who attended the Festivale de theatre on May 30:
Mme Donas, Mme Berndt, Mme Jenna, Mme Wigness, Mme Viaud, Mme Muraca and Mme Hunter,
and Mme Kirby’s classes.
During the month of May, SSES students participated in a very successful Skip for Heart event. The
students raised approximately $8 600 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation! The Shuswap Elementary
School Skipping Team kicked off the fundraiser with a demonstration of exciting skipping tricks. At
the end of the month, the campaign culminated in a school wide skipping event where SSES classes
participated in a variety of fun skipping stations lead by the students in Mme Graf's class and several
grade 6 helpers. Great job SSES students! Thank you to Mme Graf for organizing this!

We are EAGLES!
Our school’s new behavior matrix and attribute matrix are posted in
the front hallway. Come and join us for our assembly to be a part
of our learning about these.
As students are seen demonstrating positive behaviors and attributes
outlined in our matrices, they may receive a GOTCHA to recognize
their success.
Check out the new GOTCHA wall in the hall by the office!

The Board enjoyed a presentation from Principal Law and eight students from Savona Elementary
School on ‘Mind and Movement’ Yoga.

The Board approved the 2016/2017 Annual Budget Bylaw.

The Board recognized and presented a Long Term Service Award to Vice Principal McVittie for his years of service
with the school district.
The Board enjoyed a Student Voice presentation from four students who attend Valleyview and Sa-Hali Secondary
Schools. The students were accompanied by Vice Principal Stoudtz.
The Board enjoyed a presentation from Teacher Erin Khelouiati and Maureen Hegadoren on the First Steps Program
partnered by Interior Community Services, School District No. 73, and the Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops.
The Board approved Superintendent deBruijn’s report on Forest Fires and Continuing School District Operations.
The Board received an update from Superintendent deBruijn on the 2015-2016 K-12 Regular Enrolment Compliance
Audit.
The Board received a report from Superintendent deBruijn on Dry Grad Activities 2016.
The Board approved School District No. 73 participating in a Pilot Project with the Ministry of Education and the
Ministry of Health: Data Transfer.
The Board received an update from Superintendent deBruijn on the changes to the Graduation Program and
Assessment.
The Board received an update from Secretary-Treasurer Stretch on Capital Plan Submission projects and new reporting
procedures.
The Board approved revised Policy 709.2 Educational: Aboriginal.
The Board received Notices of Motion on the following policies:

Football
Congrats to the Flag Football Team who finished the season with a 2-1-2 record. Thank you to Mr Orteza for lending
his support on the sidelines and to Mme Francis for coaching the season.
Intramurals
Over 40 mostly eager students have been participating in the Intramural Ultimate Frisbee League Tuesdays and Fridays
at Lunch. The final will happen on June 10th.
Math Group:
Mme Hughes and her students would like to sincerely thank Dr. Richard Taylor, of TRU, for working with our math
group every second Tuesday morning this year! We have enjoyed his games, fun strategies and inspiration! Merci
beaucoup!
BOKS:
The primary students of École South Sa-Hali would like to sincerely thank Linda Stride, of the City of Kamloops, as
well as her wonderful team, for offering such a great morning program earlier this year! We have really enjoyed the
morning exercise!
One-to-One Reading:
Many thanks to Nancy Palson, Asuka King, Sarah Gjaltema, Natassja Berry, Taylor Watts, Robert D'Amours, Marg
Montalbetti, and Avelean Loerke for their contributions to our One-to-One reading program at École South Sa-Hali this
year. It is the second year of this program in our school and we look forward to many more years! If interested in
volunteering next year, please contact Mme Nancy at [email protected] or Mme Hughes at [email protected] and
they will put you in touch with our parent volunteer coordinator in the fall. Our volunteers are asked to fill out a form at
the office.
Welcome to Our New Principal Monsieur Jameel Azziz:
M Aziz is an experienced educational leader having worked in Manitoba and various parts of British Columbia, in the
K-12 sector as well as post secondary. He is a former President of the BC Principal's and Vice Principal's Association, as
well as a former President of the Canadian Association of Principals. His 25+ years of experience will serve the
students, parents and community of South Sa-Hali well. He is looking forward to beginning his tenure this August.
Announcement from Mme Hughes:
Mme Hughes is very happy to announce that she and her husband are expecting a baby this October! Mme Hughes
plans to start the year with us before her maternity leave, so we will see her in September.

The Internet has become a part of our daily lives. The alarm on your cell phone wakes you up in the
morning, you can read about what's happening around the world (as it's happening) and you figure out
your plans each weekend by chatting with your friends on social media sites during the week.
However, all we seem to hear about are the negative sides of the Internet: people being bullied, ripped
off, meeting people who aren't who they say they are etc. It's important that we realize that the Internet,
social media sites and all of the other tools we use online aren't the issue – it's the way some people
choose to use these tools.
As a youth, educator, parent or police officer, we all have a role to play in ensuring that our online
experiences, as well as the experiences of those around us, are positive ones.

School Parking Lot Reminders
Our staff parking lot is located near the South Sa-Hali
Elementary School’s front entrance. This parking lot is for
staff use and for people to access parking for persons with
disabilities only.
Please use our lower drop off parking lot for all other drop
offs and pick ups. The upper parking lot is small and uses a
single entry and exit. It is not safe for students and families to
be driving in and out. As well, it affects parking lot use for
persons with disabilities and for staff to access their
workplace.
Please note:
• The lower drop off lot has been designed for
efficiency and bus drop off. It is a two-way entry
from both sides of our drop off lot.
• Please respect the stop signs and bus drop off area
signs and the sign regarding no student drop offs in
the staff parking lot.
• At the east end entry stop sign, please do not turn left
but proceed around the drop off loop.
