Strong Tradition
The Blue Hose have a tremendous
coaching tradition with some of the finest
coaches in the profession having spent some
time in Clinton, S.C.
In fact, one of the premier coaches
in the history of college basketball began his
head coaching career at PC.
Norman Sloan coached the Blue Hose
from 1951-55 after a stellar playing career
at North Carolina State. Sloan guided PC to
an 89-41 mark in his time as the Blue Hose
mentor, leaving the school to take over at The
Citadel.
The Citadel was just one of three
more coaching stops for Sloan after PC as he
also helmed the Florida program twice and
the NC State program.
During his time as the coach at his
alma mater is where he truly made a name
for himself as he led the Wolfpack to three
ACC titles (1970, 1973 and 1974) and one

National Championship in the 1973-74 season. NC State en route to their national crown
defeated UCLA in the semifinal round of the
NCAA Tournament to end the school’s sevenyear National Championship run.
Sloan, who was known as “Stormin’
Norman,” finished his coaching career with a
won-loss record of 627-395.
Lonnie McMillan, who brought the TFormation to the South in football as the Blue
Hose head football coach, showed his overall
coaching prowess as he led the Blue Hose
men’s basketball program to 128 wins during
his time in charge.
Before leaving to take over the Furman
program and lead it to new heights, Butch Estes
acquired 92 wins as the head coach of the Blue
Hose and led the 1983-84 Blue Hose squad to a
25-6 mark.
Greg Blatt left PC with the highest winning percentage in program history, leading the
Blue Hose to an 89-35 record during his time
which left him as the only head coach in school
history with an all-time winning percentage
over .700 at .718.
Now in his 20th season in charge of the
Blue Hose basketball program, Gregg Nibert
has become the standard by which all other
Blue Hose head coaches will be judged in the
future.
Nibert is the only coach in program history to lead the school to over 300 wins (332)
and he is the first Blue Hose mentor to coach a
PC men’s basketball squad at the NCAA Division I level.
Norm Sloan uses a chalkboard to illustrate a
play to a Blue Hose men’s basketball player
during the 1952-53 season.
