Sultans of String

Or at the Chamber of Com-
The long-awaited return of another favorite, we are so glad the Sultans could squeeze us into their crazy schedule. 2010 and
2015 JUNO Award nominees and “Canada’s ambassadors of musical diversity”, Sultans of String thrill their audiences with
their global sonic tapestry of Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms, and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz, celebrating
musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity. Fiery violin dances with rumba-flamenco guitar while a funk
bass lays down unstoppable grooves. Acoustic strings meet with electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound, while
world rhythms excite audiences to their feet with the irresistible need to dance.
With their new release, Subcontinental Drift, they serve up a blend of ragas, reels, and rumbas with sitar master Anwar
Khurshid (featured in the Oscar-winning Life of Pi and Love Guru). Fusing the virtuosic talent of Anwar Khurshid adds to
their truly global and mesmerizing sound.
“Virtuoso playing…. An exuberant and infectious sound… Powerful and moving…The Sultans are simply an awesome musical
group!” - Mike Hill, Artistic Director, Mariposa Folk Festival
“Energetic and exciting music from a band with talent to burn!” -Maverick Magazine UK
“You get the feeling this is Strunz & Farah or Willie & Lobo or Gypsy Kings taken to the next level of the game, sometimes all
at once… a sure bet to notch a JUNO and any other award winning hardware to come its way.“ -Midwest Record, Chicago
Tuelo & Her Cousins are a New York City-based band who share a kindred love for
music that rocks the soul. Formed by singer/songwriter Tuelo Minah in 2013, the
band continually plays to packed houses at some of New York’s most famed institutions including The Apollo Music Cafe, Tavern on the Green, the Metropolitan
Opera, and Lincoln Center. Their unique take on rock and roll combines driving
beats and catchy hooks with Tswana-Bushmen rhythms to tell dreamlike tales of
struggle and triumph. No matter where they play, the cousins always get audiences
singing, clapping, and shaking their bones to the call of Tuelo’s booming voice.

Tuelo Minah is Tswana from South Africa. Since moving to New York City several
years ago, she has sang backup for Paul Simon, Hugh Masekela, Lebo M (Lion King
composer), and Angelique Kidjo. As a member of Angelique's band, she can be
heard on two of her most recent albums, Djin Djin and OYO. Tuelo has performed at
Central Park Summer stage, Carnegie Hall, Late Night with David Letterman, the
Brooklyn Academy of Music, and many other venues in and around the city. As a
soloist she has performed with renowned Ethel String Quartet, the South African All
Stars, and Juxtapower South African Song and Dance.
Though her songs are primarily in English, Tuelo often breaks into her native tongue,
Setswana - blending African melodies with American soul in a way that puts her
unique and powerful voice on prominent display. Along with her musical cousins,

MADISON COUNTY TOURISM ELIMINATES MEMBERSHIP DUES
New “Partnership” Structure Will Give the County’s Tourism-Related Businesses Better Access to Promotional Opportunities
Madison County Tourism, the county's official tourism promotion agency, has eliminated membership dues and is now
encouraging in-county tourism-related entities to become official “Partners.” Restaurants, lodging properties, shops, attractions
and events that become Partners with Madison County Tourism will have the opportunity to be featured in the organization’s
promotional efforts plus those of I LOVE NEW YORK and the Central New York Vacation Region.
Partners will be able to participate in applicable promotional efforts, such as Madison County Watchable Wildlife, Brew Central and the NYS Haunted History Trail. Partners will also receive listings in the Madison County Travel Guide and on
www.madisontourism.com. In addition, Partners will gain access to promotion by the state Division of Tourism and their iconic
I LOVE NEW YORK campaign, which includes a listing on www.iloveny.com, a potential appearance in their travel guide and
public relations promotions.
“Madison County has a wonderful story to tell, and we want to tell all of it,” said Dr. Joan Johnson, President of Madison
County Tourism. “To do this, we’ll need all of our tourism-related businesses to partner with us to ensure that they’re part of our
coordinated campaigns. This will make our county even more appealing to visitors and, in doing so, it will also help these businesses tap into the economic engine that is tourism.”
Johnson noted that visitors spent nearly $84 million in Madison County in 2014, referencing data provided by Tourism Economics. According to Johnson, this spending generated $5.7 million in local taxes, which saved the average Madison County
household $383 and sustained nearly 2,000 jobs in the county.
Businesses seeking to partner with Madison County Tourism must only fill out a brief profile form, which is available at http://
madisontourism.com/partnership.
For more information, call Madison County Tourism at 684-7320 or email [email protected].
