MDDS Launches New Foundation
MDDS is pleased to announce the
creation of the Metro Denver Dental
Foundation (MDDF). This 501©3 taxexempt organization will be operated for
the benefit of and to carry out certain
purposes of the Society. MDDF is
operated exclusively for educational and
charitable purposes to
enhance access to dental
care or services, for
promotion and advancement of dentistry
through continuing
education, scientific
research and the
dissemination of
educational information
to dental professionals and the public.
The existence of MDDF reflects the
continuing evolution and accomplishments of the Society’s educational and
access to care programming.
MDDS leadership will be the guiding
force behind the Foundation. Initially, the
Foundation will be governed by joint
board members including, Dr. Michael
Varley serving as president, Dr. David
Klekamp as vice president, Dr.
Michael Scheidt as treasurer, Dr. Scott
Smith as liaison to the MDDS community access to care committee and Ms.
Terri Gilpin as executive director. The
Foundation will solicit the advice of a
broad advisory committee to help shape
its tenets and future endeavors.
“The formation of the Foundation
gives MDDS new capabilities for becoming more successful in delivering and
supporting innovative dental access and
educational programs,” said Michael
Varley, DDS, president. “The Foundation
is dedicated to supporting goals that have
been at the heart of MDDS’s mission
since 1897 – to provide quality dental
education and to enhance the standard of
care for the public we serve. With the
establishment of the Foundation, MDDS
is well-positioned to build on and
extend its past achievements.”
While MDDS will keep a
focus on developing and guiding
the educational and outreach
models, MDDF will leverage
resources from diverse
sources to create new
programs and enhance existing ones, such as the
Domestic Violence Dental Care Program.
The Society’s Domestic Violence
Dental Care Program (DVDCP), the
primary focus of the MDDF for the next
seven months, was established in 2002
to address the dental health and cosmetic
needs of domestic abuse survivors with
cost-free dentistry to assist in their
overall recovery, self-sufficiency and selfesteem. Since then, the national award
winning DVDCP has seen dramatic
success, with over $160,000 in cost-free
dentistry donated to dozens of patients by
member volunteer dentists willing to
serve the cause. The DVDCP has struck
a chord with funders and advocates
throughout the community, advancing
awareness of disparities in and reinforcing the importance of maintaining oral
health for this population.
“MDDS’s spirit and philosophy will
be very much alive in the new
Foundation. We needed to find the right
vehicle for advancing our communitywide effort to promote dental education
and access to dental care, but with the
same goals, values and collaborative
dynamics that make MDDS and the
Rocky Mountain Dental Convention
leaders in organized dentistry and continuing education, respectively,” said
executive director, Terri Gilpin.
Special thanks to the Colorado Dental
Association, who generously acted as our
fiscal agent during the process of obtaining tax-exempt status, holding $12,500
in grant monies from Anschutz Family
Foundation and Rose Community
Foundation received for the DVDCP.

Paulina’s Promise
On September 30, the first annual
Paulina’s Promise Seminar was held
in Denver. Dr. Dennis Wells kicked
off the event with a presentation on
conservative elective dentistry. Then
the feature presenter, Dr. Bill
Dorfman, provided the attendees
with a presentation discussing different aspects of cosmetic dentistry and
gave insights to ABC’s “Extreme
Makeover.”
We had over 180 dentists and
staff in attendance, as well as 11
vendors.
Paulina’s Promise Seminar is a
charitable event my wife and I have
created to benefit the Heart Institute
at The Children’s Hospital in
memory of our daughter, Paulina.
Our very first event raised
$25,654.60!
This would not have been possible without the support of MDDS.
We would like to recognize the hard
work and enthusiasm of the MDDS
staff who took on this project and
provided invaluable assistance. And
lastly a thanks to all the MDDS
members who attended the
program.
Sincerely,
Gary and Nora Radz
Gary, Mila (the newest addition to
the Radz family) and Nora Radz
welcomed Mayor John Hickenlooper
to this very special event.

Dear Editor:
MANAGING EDITOR
Michelle Cunningham
The generosity of MDDS came in
full force at my request to help the
Katrina Hurricane victims who found
refuge in Denver. I called the office
of MDDS for help in getting some
much needed personal supplies,
toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, bags, etc. Pastor Joseph
Nixon and his staff at Shorter
African Methodist Episcopal
Community Church which is located
in Northeast Denver, welcomed the

tives and helped unload the supplies
numbering over 1,600 items for the hurricane survivors.
Presently, Shorter AME Church is represented at the Lowry Center, by the
senior assistant pastor, Rev. Sheila Johnson. She has been responsible for
fulfilling the multitude of needs of as many residents of the Lowry center as
the church can accommodate.
I was extremely pleased that by a simple call, I had access to a wealth
of supplies to aid the new residents from New Orleans. Thank you to the
Society for filling such a worthwhile need.

Editors Note: Last fiscal year MDDS donated over 25,000 dental hygiene
products to schools and charitable organizations. We are pleased to be able
to fulfill member requests for supplies on a first come, first served basis.
Please consider donating extra supplies to the B.Y.O.B. Toothbrush Drive
at the 2006 Rocky Mountain Dental Convention to help us expand our reach.
See page 9 of the enclosed Convention Supplement for details. A little goes a
long way.
Transitions
Many dentists in New Orleans
estimate that they will not be
able to reopen their practices
for six-months to a year and
will be faced with a reduced
patient base for much longer.
On October 27, 2005, the
MDDS Board of Directors
approved a pledge of $10,000
to benefit the New Orleans
Dental Association in assisting
its members to recover from
the aftermath of Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita. While the
phased re-population of New
Orleans is underway, basic
services are still not fully
restored in most neighborhoods. Residents of the hardest
hit sections of the city, including the Lower Ninth Ward, are
only allowed to briefly check
on their property. This area,
devastated by Katrina and
flooded again when Rita's
storm surge poured over
patched levees, will have to
be rebuilt from scratch before
it can be occupied.
The Louisiana State
University School of Dentistry's
periodontal graduate program
has been temporarily relocated
to the University of Colorado
School of Dentistry. The MDDS
Board pledged an additional
$5,000 to support this effort.

Give Kids a Smile Day represents the largest proactive
approach on a national level addressing the ongoing issue of
access-to-care. Participation is easy because you personalize your
day based on what you want to do and when you are available.
Possibilities can range from large community dental treatment
programs to small educational programs in schools. Any activity that addresses
the oral health needs of underserved children qualifies.
Registration is an online process. Once registered, the Colorado Dental
Association and MDDS are ready to help you find a clinic at which to volunteer, find underserved patients to treat in your office or give you educational
materials for your presentations or office waiting rooms. To register, go to
www.ada.org/goto/gkas. The ADA site is live and waiting for your registration. If you have questions, problems registering or need help locating clinics,
patients or educational materials, call (303) 740-6900 or (800) 343-3010.
9Health Fair – April 22-30, 2006
Please Volunteer — one half day
The mission of the 9Health Fair is to promote
health awareness and encourage individuals to
assume responsibility for their own health. More than 93,000 adults received
health education and screenings during the 2005 event — a three percent
increase from 2004. You can help us reach even more people in 2006. Your
participation as a volunteer dental screener at this event will help to promote
responsible dental health choices that benefit not only oral, but overall health.
We need dentist volunteers to perform simple oral screenings at 9Health
Fair screening sites. Time commitment is one half day. Your involvement
significantly increases dentistry’s profile as caring community partners.
MDDS is proud to be a 2006 sponsor and partner of the 9Health Fair.
Please visit www.mddsdentist.com to download a registration form or
call (303) 488-9700, ext. 3270 to request a listing of site locations or more
information.

The state’s first formal action plan designed to improve the oral health of
Coloradans will provide strategic guidance to government, health professions, education, business and communities on easing the burden of oral
disease in the state. Details of the plan were unveiled October 26 at a breakfast in Denver attended by health care, business and community leaders. The
oral health action plan was developed and released by the Oral Health
Awareness Colorado! (OHAC) coalition, a partnership of federal, state and
local organizations and individuals. Titled Smart Mouths, Healthy Bodies: An
Oral Health Acton Plan to Improve the Oral Health of Coloradans, the plan
includes a set of strategies and activities that will be implemented to address
six key topic areas: promising practices, workforce issues, policy and
advocacy, systems of care, financing and health promotion.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s report
notes that oral disease remains a major health issue for the state.
Details of the oral health action plan can be found on the OHAC website
at www.beasmartmouth.com.
Medicare and Medicaid
Dental Coverage
Access Advantage is currently the only health plan in the Denver-metro area
specifically designated for people who have Medicare Parts A&B and
Medicaid. It is also the only plan that offers its members $500 per year in
dental coverage, which is provided by Delta Dental. Earlier this year,
Colorado Access, a 10-year-old nonprofit Medicaid HMO, launched Access
Advantage in the following counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield,
Denver, Douglas and Jefferson.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2006, the plan will add transportation and podiatry
benefits and expand to El Paso County. For more information, dentists can
contact John Warren, executive director of Access Advantage, at (720) 7445432 or [email protected]. Patients can call Access Advantage
at (877) 287-6767.

Employment Practice
Liability Insurance
By Wendy Heckman
According to St. Paul Travelers Insurance, employment practice disputes have
become one of the fastest growing sources of litigation in the last twenty
years. The U.S. Department of Justice reports that in 2000, there were
21,032 employment civil rights complaints (making up more than half of all
civil rights complaints in the US).
Employment practice issues, from wrongful termination to discrimination to
sexual harassment, affect every business large and small. As an employer
you must be prepared to defend yourself, even against groundless allegations. Such defenses are both time consuming and very expensive, which is
why Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) is an important part of
every business owner’s insurance package.
EPLI covers defense costs and indemnification arising from claims of
sexual harassment, wrongful termination and discrimination. Some business
owners assume these types of claims are covered by a general liability policy
that insures against claims for property damage and bodily injury. It’s important to understand that most general liability policies exclude these types of
employment claims. Small businesses covered by directors and officers
policies may have limited coverage in these areas; however, it probably does
not extend coverage to the business entity.
What You Need to Know About EPLI
Choose an EPLI based upon your organization’s size and financial capabilities. The following will tell you what all EPLI policies will cover as well as offer
suggestions for other issues to consider.
All EPLI Policies:
Cover claims made against your business, the directors and officers of
your business and your full-time employees.

Creating Patient Loyalty
and Patient Referrals
By Larry M. Chatterley and Marie Wuthrich
A recent survey of more than 100,000 patients found that more than 70
percent would switch dentists if they found another dentist that they thought
was better. This is both good news and bad news. The good news is there are
hundreds of patients in your area that are only barely satisfied with their
current dentists. You stand to pick up a lot of these patients if you play your
cards right. The bad news is you stand to lose almost three-fourths of your
own patient base if you are not taking care of them.
Intuits operating values discuss the relationship between businesses and
their customers. These same principles may be applied to the relationship
between dentists and their patients: “Many businesses say their most important job is satisfying the customer. But satisfying the customer is simply the
minimum requirement for staying in business. Therefore, don’t seek to just
satisfy; seek to ‘wow’ them. ‘Wow’ means creating customer enthusiasm and
delight. It means giving customers dramatically more value than they expect
— whether measured by price, performance, quality or service. You know you
are succeeding when you inspire your customers to go out and tell others
about your business.”
Ask yourself again, “How loyal are my patients?” Patient referrals are the
ultimate gauge when it comes to determining the health of a practice. So how
“wowed” are your patients? More importantly, how can you “wow” them
now?
Start with your staff. If you do not, cannot or will not “wow” your staff,
what incentive do they have to take care of your patients? Ask them to rank
you and your relationship with them on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the
best). How do you rank as a boss? A dentist? A human being? If you score
less than 10, ask what you can do to improve.
Next, check with your patients. Ask patients to respond to this simple
question anonymously and in writing:
On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely are you to refer a friend or family member
to our office? (With 1 being not at all likely and 10 being extremely likely.)

Thick Skinned
By Lawrence E. Howes, MBA, CFP®
The US stock market has come nearly full-circle in the last four years. Beginning with
a major plunge after the tragedy on September 11, the once irrationally exuberant stock
market was prone to be a lot more timid and tend to retreat at the slightest hint of
terrorist activities. Markets, like most human activities, become desensitized to recurring bad news over time and, given the passage of time, it comes as no surprise to me
that the stock market would have such a sanguine reaction to the bloody events in
London on July 7. In fact, the Dow was up by the end of the day and there was a significant rally the remainder of that week. I don’t believe that market participants were
celebrating terrorist events. They were simply looking for better news elsewhere.
I see this new thick-skinned attitude as part of the wholesale change that is taking
place in the US equity markets. Publicly traded companies and their stock prices are
being held to a much higher standard. Organizations, with what appears to be shady
activities that were rationalized by management as “good for the shareholders,” like
Enron and WorldCom are being punished in the media and the marketplace by having
the price of their stock beaten down.
There are many reasons for this tough market environment. However, I believe the
most influential is that this economy is at the end of a 25-year war against inflation and
that war was won. Inflation is a kitten that has been replaced by low relative prices and
the shadowy figure of deflation. Whenever General Motors reduces it prices to regain
sales and tells its dealers that 2006 prices will be lower than those of 2005, you have
deflation and a company that is fighting to be in business in 10 years...
So what? Lower prices are good for the consumer. What is wrong with deflation? My
answer is nothing is wrong with deflation as long as US consumers keep buying. When
they stop buying we have a different problem known as a recession, which is a subject
for a later writing.
For now, the economy has high prices for assets with low inflation and low interest
rates. I believe that low inflation and low interest rates will be with us for the foreseeable future. When you have a low interest rate environment, the economy tends to have
high valuations on things that are sensitive to interest rates. Some examples that come
to mind immediately are bonds and real estate. Both of these assets are very highly
priced. Bond yields are low because the prices are high. Home prices are high because
the interest rates on mortgages are low. So moving forward from here, these assets are
going to grow very slowly, if at all.
The message is subtle. Stock prices will hopefully finish in positive territory in
2005. It is likely that 2006 will have similar sideways activity and it is reasonable, if
not likely, that a 10-15% stock market correction is in our future just to keep everyone
on their toes. If we have such a correction, it is likely that the market will recover very
quickly.
The economy is performing well. Unfortunately, the stock market will at best give us
some meager returns. The days of unfettered stock market glory are behind us. Ahead
is slow growth with many bumps in the road.
Exploring Dentistry:
The Next Generation
Careers in Dentistry Explorer Post 296 activities are underway for 2005/06.
Under the direction of Jennifer Garza, DDS, MS, students ages 14–20
enrolled in our mentoring program are invited to participate in seven dentalthemed meetings, all featuring hands-on experiences. Activities, including a
tour of the new University of Colorado Lazzara Center for Oral and Facial
Health at Fitzsimons, bite mark identification with Dr. John McDowell, making
mouthguards and more, are planned through February 2006.
This program would not be possible without the partnership of the
Colorado Dental Association, the support of Biolase and our volunteers who engage and amuse the students with their insight and
encouragement. Please stay tuned to the May/June issue of the Articulator
Magazine for a complete summary of this year’s events.

○ Other considerations? Depending on your business, you may wish to find
a broader coverage policy that covers part-time, temporary and seasonal
employees as well as independent contractors.
Cover civil judicial proceedings and most cover arbitration and administrative proceedings.

○ If the size of your organization warrants, you may want to consider a
policy that will cover claims that are made prior to the actual filing of a
grievance (e.g., an employee demands a monetary sum or suit will be
filed).
Cover claims made by current full-time employees.
○ Do you employ many part-time or temporary employees? What about
applicants for employment (think discrimination) or former employees
(wrongful termination)? Depending on your answers, you may want to
look for a policy that covers these types of claims.
Cover claims of workplace harassment and wrongful termination.
○ Some policies also cover negligent hiring claims, invasion of privacy
claims, defamation and emotional distress claims. We suggest looking for
the most comprehensive policy.
When looking for any insurance company, we recommend that you don’t buy
solely on price — often those discounted premiums mean less coverage. That
low premium won’t be quite the bargain if the carrier cannot pay for its claims.

Teeth Treats for Halloween . . . Special thanks to members Dr. Makala
Bannister and Dr. Jeff Hurst for joining MDDS at The Children's Museum of
Denver's annual Trick-or-Treat Street event on October 29 and 31. Our interactive brushing demonstrations were a big hit with children and parents alike.

Creating Patient Loyalty
Continued from page 4
If the average score given is an 8 or below, you are at risk of losing more
than 70 percent of your patients. You need to find out how and where to
change. You might follow up by asking: What is one thing you would like to
see us change or do differently?
On the other hand, if your average score from patients is 9 or above, then
you must be doing something right. Find out what it is so that you can do
more of it. Ask: What is the one thing you appreciate most about our practice,
i.e., what keeps you coming back to see us?
The best path for profitable growth lies in a practice’s ability to get loyal
patients to become their public relations department. Once you have reached
a point where a majority of your patients have become “advocates” of the
practice, you will begin to see growth and prosperity in your practice.
Practice success is a function of defining and exceeding patient expectations; it is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.
Inspire your patients to tell others about you.

M D D S Articulator
Donald S. Sherman, DMD, a clinical
instructor, Department of Diagnostic
Sciences and Patient Services, at the
Boston University Goldman School of
Dental Medicine, will present this
informative and entertaining two-part
course.
The morning lecture offers a multimedia presentation to help dentists and
their staff understand and use digital
imaging to improve communication with
patients and greatly improve documentation of clinical treatment records. This
course will show you how digital
cameras, digital x-ray equipment, intraoral cameras and scanners can all create
dental images.
The afternoon workshop is for
dentists and staff who would like to have
a hands-on experience with Windows
based imaging software that can be used
to simplify image management and
image correction for personal and professional use. You will be required to
use your own notebook computer.
Learn how to name and track patient and
personal images, and to apply simple
image adjustments and cropping.
See Calendar of Events above for
details. The fee is:
Workshop* and lecture — Dentists
$215/attendee; Staff $99/attendee
Lecture only — Dentists
$115/attendee; Staff $69/attendee
*Prerequisite: If attending the
workshop in the p.m., participants
MUST attend the lecture in the a.m. (no
exceptions).
Detection of Oral Cancer with
OralCDx: A Hands-On Seminar
Even if you have attended an OralCDx
lecture in the past or already use brush
biopsy in your practice, this program is a
must! New ADA billing code and patient
scripting, hygienists’ use of the brush
biopsy and Delta Dental’s coverage will
all be discussed during this informative
hands-on seminar.
Presented by Dr. Greg Ingalls,
examination technique by dentists and
hygienists, the clinical appearance of
oral precancers and relevant updated
demographics emphasizing recent trends
in oral cancer, including the rising rate
of oral cancers in young patients with no
risk factors, will all be discussed.
As a result of attending this course,
dentists will be able to apply a protocol
within their offices encompassing examination of all patients, detection of small
red and white oral spots, and appropriate
evaluation of such spots using the
OralCDx brush biopsy test. Finally,
billing and reimbursement procedures
will be reviewed.
See Calendar of Events above for
details. The fee is $25 for members and
staff; $35 for non-members and staff.
Contact Caron Notarmuzi, MDDS
Education Director, at (303) 488-9700
for further information or to register for
these events.
