H.CON/MA 10/100TX-FX NTU
1 – Overview
U
The H.CON/MA is a 10/100Base-TX-FX Media Converter designed and built to be used
as a Subscriber (CPE) Access Device in FTTx (x = Home, Business, etc) environments.
SFS (Single – Fiber –Strand) versions of the H.CON/MA versions make it a superb
solution for FTTH deployment.
This device is the FibroLAN’s best selling fiber NTU, designed to provide Layer 2 FE
services for Business and Residential customers.
The MA™ (Micro Agent) is an on chip management system enabling the management of
remote access devices eliminating the need of a SNMP agent and IP address.
When the H.CON/MA is connected through its F/O link to a remote Master Unit
(Access Concentrator normally located on the Access Node or Network Center), which is
MA™ enabled and SNMP managed (FibroLAN Metrostar™ and S.CON1M/MA), a
comprehensive set of monitoring and control functions can be implemented from any
management station (normally located in the Master Unit) into the attached remote units
(H.CON/MA) or any FibroLAN device supporting the MA™ technology.
The device supports extended MTU (64 ÷ 1916 bytes).
Four H.CON/MA devices support CWDM wavelengths (1470, 1510, 1530, 1550nm).
The H.CON/MA supports the Offline Configuration Facility (OFC) and Remote Firmware
Upgrade (RFU).
2 – Planning your network with H.CON/MA CPE/NTU
U
This section will guide you through network planning in order to obtain maximum benefit
- in terms of performance and functionality from the H.CON/MA and other network
devices. Typical network architectures are:
A. Access Applications

B. Fiber to the Home configuration (FTTH)
The installation of fiber throughout the network, from the provider to the subscriber
premises, is the only future proof infrastructure design.
The fiber can reach a variety of customer premises, such businesses, schools,
hospitals, and other institutions.
The MMM-01 Management module installed in the MetroStar System will monitor,
control and manage the modules installed in the MetroStar chassis and the remote
H.CON/MA devices. It will report alerts and traps to the SNMP Manager station located
at the Central Node.
MetroStar™ equipped with a management module can be monitored and
managed from any SNMP management station running popular management
platforms (e.g. FibroLAN’s MetroView Device Manager, HP OpenView, SNMPc,
etc)
Note: when the remote device is not MA enabled, the H.CON/MA™ device will
switch automatically to a normal CPE/NTU device mode of operation.

General Description
All H.CON/MA models have identical functionality and performance. Therefore, any
description and features of one model refers to all other types.
The RJ-45 port operates in Auto-Negotiation mode: although primarily designated for
100Base-TX transmission, it also supports 10Base-T transmission. It may operate in
both FDX and HDX modes, depending on the type of device to which it is connected.
The TP port is a shielded RJ-45 port, Auto-Cross, auto polarity, cat.5, and 100m.
The F/O port supports 100Base-FX transmission, set to FDX (Full Duplex) mode.
The conversion process creates a BMD (Buffered Media Domain) allowing
unprecedented functionality and performance. The F/O port will always operate in FDX
even when the TP port operates at HDX.
H.CONMA devices support CWDM wavelengths and may work in a CWDM
environment.
The H.CON/MA does not require setup of any kind (minimizing installation time) and
does not have any external/internal controls.
The device is housed in a compact and rugged metal case, providing strong free –aircooling for extended stable operation and reliability.
The H.CON/MA unit is suitable for desktop, shelf (with the optimal CTF- RM) or wallmount installation (SCH-WM kit).
The H.CON/MA is equipped with a single internal power supply (100 - 240V universal
input), or an optional -48 VDC power supply (PS48) highly overrated to increase the
system’s MTBF. A front panel LED indicates the power status.
8
H.CON/MA 10/100TX-FX NTU
In case of power failure, the device sends an alert signal to the attached MetroStar
module (MCM100-0X, MCM110-0X): "Remote Power Failure" signal.
The remote module will show in its Module status the indication "Fail" under Remote
device Power status.
The LEDs Link/Act for the TP and F/O ports monitors the link and data activity (RX, TX)
of the H.CON/MA device.
The H.CON/MA supports the Far End Fault (FEF) feature.
Far End Fault occurs when the signal detection is logically false on the receive section
of the (incoming path) fiber port. When the H.CON/MA detects a F/O Link Loss
condition, the unit will automatically send a Far End Fault signal to the remote device
(on its outgoing path). The remote device should support the same FEF feature and it
will indicate a Link Loss as well. (Refer to section 6 for more details).
The H.CON/MA supports the Fault Propagation mechanism (FO > TP).
When activated (controllable via the management system only), the H.CON/MA,
sensing a loss of its F/O Link, will automatically cut the attached device TP port link
(refer to sections 12 and 13 for a detailed description).
The H.CON/MA supports the SLE feature. FibroLAN's Subscriber Link Emulation
virtually emulates the subscriber’s device or network connected to the TP port of the
remote device (converter) onto the TP link of the switch/router (located in the Access
Node or Network Center) normally connected to the Master Unit (MetroStar™System,
S.CON1M/MA).
When activated (controllable via the management system only) it senses the loss of
the TP link connected to the H.CON/MA, notifies the Master Unit and cuts off the TP link
connected to the switch/router, which is alerted in real time of the subscriber failure. All
this is performed without disrupting the F/O link, thus ensuring on-going control of
H.CON/MA (CPE) via MA management (see section 14).
Note: when the remote device is not MA enabled, the H.CON/MA™ device will
switch automatically to a normal CPE/NTU converter mode of operation
The Loop-Back test is performed from the attached remote device (MetroStar module
MCM100, MCM110)
Management
If the device’s FO link partner is a Fibrolan’s MA enabled device (MCM100/110 modules
installed in the MetroStar chassis) then the H.CON/MA device can be fully managed inband, including advanced functionality such as rate limiting, loop-back, Dying Gasp and
more functions (refer to section 11 for a detailed explanation)
If the MetroStar™ is equipped with a management module (MMM-01) then the
H.CON/MA can be managed via an SNMP management station or thru Telnet.
A serial connection at the MMM-01 management module permits also local
management of the H.CON/MA device (RS232 terminal CLI management).
The H.CON/MA is managed by the FibroLAN MetroView Device Manager
The update software for the H.CON/MA device can be downloaded using the TFTP
routine.
The aforementioned features make the H.CON/MA a superb and outstanding
device for HTTx environments.
Default Parameters
Following a “Restore device defaults” command implemented through the remote
MA management, the H.CON/MA unit will be set to the following default
conditions: Auto/Negotiation enable, TP port enabled, Upstream bandwidth 100M,
Pause (Flow Control) mode ON, and Fault Propagation (FO>>TP) disabled.

10
H.CON/MA 10/100TX-FX NTU
6 – 100Base-FX Far End Fault (FEF feature)
Usually a “LINK” indication is related to the incoming fiber only: F/O Link ON shows that
the path created by the remote transmitter, local receiver and the fiber connecting them
is operational. However if there is a fault in the other – outgoing - path (created by the
local transmitter, remote receiver and the fiber connecting them) – the indication for
such fault can be seen on the remote device only. (MCM100 or MCM110 modules
installed in the MetroStar System in the below drawing example).
The FEF implemented in the H.CON/MA and in the MetroStar modules close this gap: if
there is a fault in the incoming receive path of the H.CON/MA, then the F/O Link/Act LED
will go OFF on both the local and remote devices. In this way we avoid the possibility of
having a FX Link ON indication at one end, while, in reality one of the F/O data path is
disrupted. Same event will take place if the MCM100/110 module will sense a Link loss
on its receive path. A FEF signal is sent to implement this operation.
The following drawing depicts the FEF functionality.
If any of the H.CON/MA Receive path elements (MetroStar attached remote module
Tx, or the Receive Fiber line, or the H.CON/MA Rx) becomes faulty, the H.CONMA
device will transmit a FEF signal to the remote attached module which will also indicate
a FX Link down condition.

10 – Twisted Pair Cabling connection
The H.CON/MA provides one shielded RJ-45 connector to interface to the twisted pair
link. The port is by default in Auto –negotiation mode.
Forced mode is possible (10/100, FDX/HDX via management when A/N is disabled).
Use a shielded Cable Type 5 or higher grade, up to 100m (330ft) long.
STP cable carries a higher quality of signal and is less sensitive to environmental noise.
The TP port supports Auto-Cross: you can simply connect any device to any port by
using a standard straight or crossed cable. This feature detects and configures
automatically the TP port to the correct MDI or MDI-X configuration.

11 – MA™ Concept and Functions
The MA™ (Micro Agent) is an on-chip management system providing the monitoring
and management of remote access devices without the need of an expensive SNMP
agent module. The MA™ does not require an IP address.
The chip is embedded in both the remote unit, mostly referred to as a CPE, and in the
Master Unit (normally installed in the Node Unit). A unique secured in-band
management protocol allows the two devices communicating between themselves over
the fiber link bi-directionally, therefore both monitoring and management commands
can be remotely performed on the CPE. Control frames are not forwarded to data
ports. The drawing below illustrates the FibroLAN MA™ technology.
When MA™ enabled devices are deployed at both ends of the fiber link, they
automatically learn about each other’s presence and begin providing full remote
management functions within 20 to 30m.seconds from the moment the link has been
established. However, if an MA™ enabled devices cannot complete such handshake
within that time, it concludes that the opposite end device is not MA™ enabled,
subsequently it bypasses its special functions and operates like a standard, straight
forward access device. Therefore there are no interoperability issues between network
devices which have MA™ chips embedded in them and those that do not have.
The following management functions are available for the H.CON/MA device through
an MA™ enabled and SNMP managed MetroStar System:
The H.CON/MA Main Menu includes: Device status and Device control.

H.CON/MA Power Failure (Last Gap)
In case of power failure, the device sends an alert signal to the attached MetroStar
module (MCM100-0X, MCM110-0X): "Remote Power Failure" signal.
The term "Remote Power Failure" in this manual is sometimes referred to
"Last gap" or "Dying gasp" by the industry as well as in the product specifications.
The remote module will show in its Module status the indication "Fail" under
Remote device Power status.

12 – Fault Propagation
The main purpose of fault propagation mechanism implemented in media converters is to allow
real-time notification of any link failure to upper hierarchy devices (e.g. switches/routers with
redundant links) consequently activating an alternate path to communicate with a mission critical
site.
The Fault Propagation includes normally typical bi-directional mechanisms: fault propagates
both from fiber to TP port (FO>>TP) and from TP to the fiber port (TP>>FO).
If the H.CON/MA is connected to a MetroStar module (MCM100 or MCM110), it is possible in
these modules to enable/disable (through management or DIP switches) the FP FO>>TP and/or
TP>>FO mode of operation.
In order to optimize the network, you must first decide what is the critical site needing
redundancy, consequently establish the general direction of fault propagation required, finally
set up accordingly.
The mostly common use is FO>>TP propagation: (at the central site where normally the
MetroStar chassis is allocated) failure of the fiber link will cut the TP link of the router/switch,
which in turn will activate an alternate path to the remote site (in our case: H.CON/MA)
The Fault Propagation implemented in the H.CON/MA device is uni-directional, FO>>TP
enabled by the MMM-01 management module located in MetroStar chassis. The TP>>FO
mode of operation is not allowed to avoid that a user may inadvertently disconnect the
TP port link, or the TP port link failure occurs; in such case the H.CON/MA will disconnect
its Fiber Link port and therefore losing the MA remote control of the H.CON/MA device.
Thus to preserve the fiber link integrity for the MA inband management, the command
TP>>FO is not allowed to prevent eventual disconnection of the fiber link due to a TP link
failure at the H.CON/MA device.
The drawing below illustrates the FP operation
Fault Propagation operation
The LINK TEST mode: it is possible to enable the Link Test in the H.CON/MA unit
(through a management command) by disabling the FP mechanism (FO>>TP)
Set (or remain) in this mode in 2 cases:
• Whenever your network cannot benefit from FP (i.e. alternate route is not available)
• For diagnostic purposes: in this mode each of the link segments (typically 3: TP,
F/O, TP) provides separate and true indication of its integrity therefore the
defective segment can be identified and consequently repaired.
While in TEST mode, the H.CON/MA provides full functionality and run normal traffic, except the
fault propagation is not operational.
18
H.CON/MA 10/100TX-FX NTU
13 – Far End Fault and Fault Propagation
When both the Far End Fault and the Fault Propagation are enabled, the following
events take place when the incoming F/O link to the RX input of the H.CON/MA
device is disrupted.
1. A Far End Fault takes place at the H.CON/MA device
2. The F/O Link/Act LED at the H.CON/MA is shut down
3. Since the FP (FO>TP) is enabled, the H.CON/MA cuts the TP port Link of the
attached device
4. A FEF signal is transmitted from H.CON/MA to the RX of the F/O port at the
MCM100 module which will shut down its F/O Link/Act LED
5. The MCM100 module senses that its F/O link is dropped and the enabled FP
(FO>>TP) disconnects the TP link to the attached device (normally a
switch/router)
6. Same events will take if the MCM100 module installed in the MetroStar chassis
will sense a F/O link failure on its incoming path; the link of the attached switch
TP port is dropped
The drawing illustrates the FEF and FP operations.
19
H.CON/MA 10/100TX-FX NTU
14 – SLE (Subscriber Link Emulation) Feature
If the remote device is another FibroLAN’s MA™ (like the H.CON/MA) and the
Master Unit (FibroLAN Metrostar™, S.CON1M/MA) is managed, the most powerful
SLE feature comes into the picture, further enhancing the network’s resilience.
FibroLAN’s Subscriber Link Emulation virtually emulates the subscriber’s device or
network connected to the TP port of the remote device (converter) onto the TP link
of the switch/router normally connected to the Master Unit (MetroStar module).
When activated (controllable via the management system only) it senses the loss of
the TP link connected to the H.CON/MA, and will cause the Master Unit to cut off the
related TP link of Network device A, alerting in real time the switch/router of the
subscriber failure. All this is performed without disrupting the F/O link, thus
ensuring on-going control of the H.CON/MA via the MA management.
It should be noted that if the TP port of the MetroStar module has failed, the SLE
will cut-off the link of the Network Device B TP port, providing in this manner an
optimal bi-directional safe operation.
Thus SLE has in effect two modes of operation:
• Downstream SLE mode: link failure of the MCM100/110 module TP port will
cause the disconnect of the remote Network device B link port
• Upstream SLE mode: remote MA device link TP port failure (H.CON/MA) will
cause the disconnect of the attached Network Device A link TP port
The SLE may be used independently or in conjunction with the previously described FP
mechanism enabled in the Master Unit and H.CON/MA. When both mechanisms are
activated (FO>TP and SLE) then if the TP link connecting the appropriate module (in the
above drawing the link of the MCM100/110 module) has failed, the SLE will prevail and
it will disconnect the TP (or Fiber) link of the network device attached to the H.CON/MA.
The FP will not intervene and the mentioned event condition remains until the faulty link
is repaired. On the other hand, if the FO link of the MCM100 module (FO port link) is
disrupted, then the FP FO>>TP command is executed and the TP link to the Network
Device A is dropped.
Again it must be emphasized that this extensive set of features is obtained only if MA enabled
devices are installed at both ends of the link.

15 – Troubleshooting
Prior to performing the following procedures, set all FP DIP switches on MCM100/110
modules to TEST (FP disable). Disable FP for the H.CON/MA through the management.
Disable also SLE at both ends. Perform “Reset Module”, “Restore module Defaults”,
‘ Reset device” and “Restore Device defaults” commands via management.

Corrective Action
Check that the power supply cable is firmly
connected to the main power supply and rack
mount power source.
Check that the AC input power source is
between 100 and 240VAC.
Check the various LEDs indications and cabling
TP and F/O links.
Try to replace the suspected H.CON/MA with
another working similar unit.
Check that the connected device is working
properly at 100Mbps or 10Mbps. Check that the
TP connection cable is the right one and well
connected at both ends.
Verify according to section 10 (Twisted pair
cable Connection)
Check that the receive fiber is properly
connected to the transmit port of the remote
fiber device AND the transmit port to the receive
port of the remote device. Verify that the fiber
optic power is the required power on the receive
fiber connector at the H.CON/MA end. Check if
the attached device does support the FEF
feature.
If the FP is enabled at both ends, disable the FP
in both devices (Link test) through management
and DIP switches and check Link integrity.
Check that both ends of F/O link are set to FDX
Check that both sides of TP connection are in
same link mode (10Mbps/HDX, 10Mbps/FDX
OR 100Mbps HDX / 100Mbps FDX).
1. Verify that the F/O Link is active and working
properly.
2. Reset the H.CON/MA by disconnecting its
power cord and reconnecting it. Check if the MA
Active LED is lit.
3.If not, check the H.CON/MA from the MMM01 management module (installed in the
MetroStar chassis):
a. Check the CPE Status (TP and F/O Link
status).
b. You may perform a Reset and Restore
device’s defaults through management.
If the problem persists after carrying out the above procedure, do the following: exchange
suspected H.CON/MA with another H.CON/MA, and check connectivity and mode of
operation. If that has solved the problem, send the H.CON/MA for repair. If the problem still
persists, there is probably some sort of general network failure.
