Message
John Hartman has established
a reputation across Canada
and abroad for his large scale
landscape paintings. His early
work was animated by both
the mythical and the mundane
stories of the painted locales.
Most recently Hartman has
been painting aerial views
of cities, presenting them as
living organisms entwined
with the natural terrain of their
geographic sites.
Hartman’s studio is in
Lafontaine at the south end
of Georgian Bay and each
summer he makes small
landscape paintings in the
islands surrounding his camp,
south of Britt, on the eastern
shore of the Bay.

31st Season of Firsts
We begin the fourth decade of the Festival of the Sound
with a season of firsts:
•The first Festival performance of Bach’s Mass in B minor,
our most ambitious production ever!
•The first performance of a Beethoven Symphony by
the Festival Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of
James Sommerville.
•Family Fare: the first time we have repeated portions of
our Friday evening gala concerts for a family audience on
Saturday – six-piano concert on July 17 and five-harp
concert on August 7. And they are free!
•The first time the Elmer Iseler Singers have performed
Gilbert and Sullivan – the Pirates of Penzance on August 8.
The Glory of the Cello
Outstanding cellists perform the greatest works for their
instrument. Meet Denis Brott, Artistic Director of the Montreal
Chamber Music Festival, Michel Strauss, Professor at the
Conservatoire de Paris, Coenraad Bloemendal, born in
Amsterdam and now performing in Canada, Yegor Dyachkov,
a young Russian/Canadian virtuoso, Chloe Dominguez, a rising
star from Montreal, Marc Johnson, retired after 35 years with
the Vermeer String Quartet, Roman Borys of the Gryphon Trio,
Adrian Fung of the Afiara String Quartet (and his alter-ego
rapper 8W), Jacob Braun, new cellist with the Penderecki String
Quartet, Rolf Gjelsten of the New Zealand String Quartet, Julian
Armour of the Chamber Players of Canada and young cellists
Emmanuelle Beaulieu Bergeron and Sybil Shanahan.
Harp Heaven
Canada’s leading harpists gather this summer to honour their
teacher. On August 6, Judy Loman, formerly principal harpist of
the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and teacher of all the others,
is joined by principal harpists Jennifer Swartz of the Montreal
Symphony, Elizabeth Volpé Bligh of the Vancouver Symphony,
1.866.364.0061
705.746.2410
Nora Bumanis of the Edmonton Symphony and Celtic and
traditional harpist Sharlene Wallace in most of the best
repertoire for harp. Erica Goodman, the Festival’s long-time
resident harpist, is heard three times between July 23 and 28.
Chopin Celebrated! – July 22 to 24
Janina Fialkowska hosts a festival of music by her favourite
composer, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth
of Chopin. She is joined by André Laplante, Angela Cheng,
Jan Lisiecki and Glen Montgomery in the solos, chamber works
and concertos of Chopin and his contemporaries.
Schumann Celebrated! – August 4
When he encountered Chopin’s Variations on La Ci Darem
La Mano, Robert Schumann wrote “Hats off, gentleman, a
Genius!” Schumann, also born in 1810, composed some of the
greatest masterpieces of Romantic music. The Festival of the
Sound celebrates his own genius in a full day of concerts,
including The Schumann Letters, a musical biography sharing
the story of the love and tragedy of Robert and Clara Schumann.
Music from the Inside Out
The Festival’s series of free lectures, interviews and open
rehearsals gives you opportunities to better appreciate the
music being heard. Join Jeffrey Stokes’s Overtures introducing
Chopin, Bach and jazz and Conversations with Keith Horner,
inviting you to get to know the performers in a series of
personal interviews.
Island Queen Cruises
Enjoy Georgian Bay sunsets as the cruise ship Island Queen
takes a wandering three-hour route through the wild and rugged
beauty of the 30,000 Islands, a region recently designated
by the United Nations as the Georgian Bay Littoral Biosphere
Reserve. These cruises blend wonderful music with
breathtaking scenery. Performances are on the lower deck
of the Island Queen and can be heard throughout the ship.

Canada
Weekend
The weekend begins with the second in
our Family Fare series of free concerts for
listeners of all ages. The Graham Campbell
Quartet explores popular TV and film themes
in the jazz style. The Gene DiNovi Trio takes
you back to his favourite street, Broadway,
with a side trip to Scandinavia. Two big bands
make the Jazz Canada Weekend even more
exciting. Hear jazz standards and original
tunes on Saturday evening with the Dave
Young Big Band and music of the Swing Era
on Sunday evening with the Toronto All-Star
Big Band. On Monday, Latin fever takes over
the Island Queen with the music of Sinal
Aberto, vibrant, exotic and full of energy.
Pianist Gordon Sheard and Rio natives,
vocalist Luando Jones and percussionist
Joelson David “Maninho” Costa, are joined
by Dave Young and Terry Clarke in an
exciting new quintet that brings a jazz
approach to classic Brazilian songs.
Special Events
Canada Day Cruise — July 1
Celebrate Canada’s birthday with the Shores of Newfoundland,
a “down east” band that specializes in the music of the
Maritimes and Newfoundland. The evening ends on a festive
note as the Island Queen returns to the harbour and drifts for
the fireworks display – a Canada Day tradition since 1991.
Classic Primadonna — July 25
Nearly thirty years after the first Primadonna show at Stratford
Summer Music, Mary Lou Fallis joins original cast members,
James Campbell and Suzanne Shulman, and long-suffering
pianist-collaborator, Peter Tiefenbach, to recreate the best from
past shows, along with brand new material. Reserved seating
at tables in the Charles W. Stockey Festival Performance Hall.
Dessert and coffee are included in the ticket price.
Jazz Tea at Manitou — July 27
Sheila Wise invites us into her home on the grounds of the
Inn at Manitou to indulge in the wonderful tradition of Afternoon
Tea. Tickets are limited so order early.
Inn at Manitou Gala — August 3
The Inn at Manitou, one of Canada’s finest resorts, is nestled
on the shores of Lake Manitouwabing. This elegant evening
includes a full-course, haute cuisine dinner with wine. Guests
then adjourn to the Tea Room for an intimate recital of the
music of Schumann, Chopin and Bizet. Patrons receive an
income tax receipt for a portion of the ticket price.
Baroque on the Boat — August 6
The Festival Winds enjoy their annual romp on the
M.V. Chippewa, this year presenting Baroque repertoire.
This somewhat off-the-wall group of players is very serious
about music and always fun to be with, the perfect combination
for a morning on Georgian Bay. Only fifty tickets are sold,
so order early.

Afiara String Quartet
The all-Canadian Afiara String Quartet (Valerie Li and
Yuri Cho, violins; David Samuel, viola; and Adrian Fung, cello)
is the graduate resident string quartet at The Juilliard School
in New York, where it serves as teaching assistant to the
celebrated Juilliard String Quartet. The quartet’s 2009/10
season includes performances at the Library of Congress,
Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie
Hall, the Mooredale Concert Series, the Montreal and Ottawa
International Chamber Music Festivals and the Festival of
the Sound. Formed in 2006, the Afiara String Quartet takes
its name from the Spanish “fiar”, meaning “to trust”, a basic
element vital to the depth and joy of its music-making.
The ensemble is committed to education and connecting
with diverse audiences. Bringing urban elements into its
outreach activities, the ensemble bridges the gap between
Haydn and hip-hop.
Adam György
Adam György was accepted to the Béla Bartók Conservatory
as a prodigy in 1994, at the age of 12. In 1998 he won the
National Youth Piano Competition and, two years later,
Hungary’s Pianist 2000 award at the age of 18. He was
accepted at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest
in 2000, graduating in 2006, and is currently doing his doctoral
studies there with a state scholarship. In 2005 Adam was
invited to the Steinway Artist community, a signal honour that
places him in the company of the greatest pianists of all time.
Adam György tours the world, delighting audiences with his
virtuosity, his charm, and his improvisations on well-known
melodies, all of which invite comparisons to the incomparable
Franz Liszt. His appearance at the Festival of the Sound marks
his Canadian debut.

Charles Stockey loved young artists
and often expressed his desire for them
to perform in the acoustically wonderful
concert hall that he helped to build.
The Festival of the Sound chooses the
RBC Stockey Young Artists each year to
honour this wish.
RBC Stockey Young Artists are
generously supported by:
The RBC Foundation supports arts and
culture through the RBC Emerging Artists
Support Project because of its belief in the
power of the arts to enrich lives and enhance
communities. Over 30 projects across
Canada help young artists bridge the gap
from the academic to the professional world.
The Festival of the Sound’s RBC Stockey
Young Artist program supports exceptional
young musicians in their transition to
professional careers.

Essence
of Austria
Harmonizing
music, wine
and cuisine
Join us
for a special fundraising
event full of Austrian charm, Monday, July 19 at
the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing
Arts. The evening begins with cocktails and
hors d’oeuvres, served in the atrium and enjoyed
on the waterside deck if the weather is fine.
Our host is Jerry Horner, wine connoisseur and
retired violist of the Fine Arts String Quartet.
Adding to the ambience of the evening will be a
menu with traditional Viennese flavours. Jerry
Horner will introduce Austrian wines that he has
chosen to complement every course. Enjoy
conversations and laughter with friends old and
new and raise a glass to the Festival of the Sound.
No evening in Vienna, the city where music is
in the air, would be complete without wonderful
music. More composers have made their homes
in Vienna than in any other city. Moshe Hammer,
Guy Few, Mark DuBois, James Campbell,
Suzanne Shulman and the New Zealand String
Quartet will choose from the works of Léhar,
Strauss, Kreisler and Mozart and will delight you
with their performances.
A tax receipt for $75 will be issued for each
ticket sold. Wine with dinner is included in the
price of the ticket. The dress code is “Parry
Sound Elegance,” ranging all the way from black
tie to smart casual. Seating is reserved at tables
for eight. (It is not necessary to purchase the
whole table.)

Starring Role
In 2009 the Festival of the Sound
celebrated its 30th anniversary, one
of its most successful seasons ever.
In a year of economic instability,
box office revenues, individual,
corporate and government support
and volunteer-generated income
all remained strong. The volunteer
energy that makes the Festival unique
is as important as ever with the
Festival’s success very much based
on “strength in numbers.” Thirty years
of building strong relationships have
resulted in an organization that is
now looked upon as one of the most
respected arts presenters in the nation.
To present world calibre concerts at
affordable ticket prices, the Festival
Board raises two dollars for every
dollar generated at the Box Office.
All contributions are gratefully
received and are eligible for a tax
receipt. With a donation of $25 or
more, you become a member of the
Festival of the Sound; receive a
pre-Christmas mailing with special
offers on passes and merchandise,
our newsletter Soundings, early
mailing of the season brochure and
listing in the souvenir programme.
The Festival Board offers contributors
of $250 or more tickets to their
concert of choice.

Grades 4 to 6 in thirteen area schools
enjoy six concert experiences, some
of which have included the True North
Brass, a woodwind quintet, a jazz
ensemble and the Toronto Symphony
Youth Orchestra. Prior to each of
these concerts, the musicians visit
every school, getting to know the
students in an informal setting,
demonstrating their instruments and
preparing them for the concert.
Then all 700 children come to the

listen to the musicians, now their
