October 2015
The 24th Family Medical Supply Business Fest was another
wildly successful event for the Dunn Chamber. The 2015 expo
experienced another sold out year for exhibitors with 70
different business’ participating. Kudos to Chairman Terry
Whittenton and the committee on another job well done. New
this year was the Presentation Corner — 11 exhibitors
requested 15-minute time slots to demonstrate a product or
service. Our Volunteers, made up of Ambassadors and
Members, were a big help in manning the drink booths,
entrances, Prize Wheel booth, and driving the carts provided
by Murray Custom Carts. In excess of 1000 visitors enjoyed
free food, great gifts, and prizes. Most importantly, everyone
present learned more about our local businesses and
service-providers. Congrats to the winners of the 5-$100 bills:
Judy Page; Dick Phillips; Journey Ruggles; Clara Tart; and
Susie Tart. Congrats to the winners of Exhibitor Giveaway—
two pairs of Christmas Gala Tickets—Harnett Woods Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center and Warren Eye Care.

Walgreens was named 2015 Retailer of the Year by
North Carolina Retail Merchants Association. A significant
reason they stood out this year is the breadth and depth of
its community involvement and its focus on student
development—for instance its partnership with all three
Schools of Pharmacy, including Campbell University.
The North Carolina Retail Merchants Association offered
this Scam Alert in their recent newsletter, regarding Google
- "With the increase in the participation in the Get Your
Business on The Map Program, there have unfortunately
been an increase in telemarketing scams aimed at small
businesses. Google will NEVER call you unless you
request a call. Google does not charge for inclusion in
Google Maps. Be wary of invoices for services received -especially if no one in your business remembers
purchasing those services. Make sure to perform due
diligence on any financial transaction. Watch out for parties
calling and selling services claiming to have a special
relationship with or claiming to be Google. Often, these
parties are telemarketers that are not affiliated with Google
and are trying to leverage the Google brand to sell your
business some type of online service. Keep in the mind the
following: Google does not place robocalls. Google does
not call to 'verify your listings' unless you have requested a
call on your google account. Google does not charge for
inclusion in Google Search or Google My Business."

A delegation representing the Dunn Chamber attended the NC Business &
Economic Development Summit hosted by the entire NC Congressional delegation,
headed by Congressman Richard Hudson, in Washington, D.C. Sept. 8-9. Governor
Pat McCrory welcomed his fellow North Carolinians; USDOT Secretary Anthony
Foxx began the days top of Transportation. A Transportation Leadership Panel then
followed; NCDOT Secretary Nick Tennyson recognized Rooms To Go and Godwin
Manufacturing in his remarks. Then an official briefing was given by all of the
NC Congressional members, during which affordable health care, banking
regulations and tax implications and their impact on small business, fracking, the XM
Bank and internet Sales Tax were all mentioned as concerns. All were concerned
about the long term ramifications of the Iran Agreement.
The overwhelming concern was around growing our economy and job
creation. Many spoke about the difficulties in getting loans for entrepreneurs. And
that entrepreneurism is at an all time low, at less than 30%. Congressman George
Holding stated Congress has passed a Small Business Tax Relief Bill—however he
was sure it would not pass the Senate due to gridlock. Congressman Mark Meadows remarked that the state needs to work
together to create jobs and to lesson the impact that too many regulations has had on businesses and jobs. Congressman David
Rouzer reiterated our need to be more business friendly—to grow our economy and to restrain spending in order to lesson our
debt situation. Following the days sessions, the delegation had dinner and conversation with Congresswoman Ellmers and some
of her staff.
Wednesday, Sept. 9th’s sessions included remarks by Mike Sommers, Chief of Staff to Speaker of the House John
Boehner, who commented his office knows that people are frustrated by the lack of accomplishment in the government. US
Senator Thom Tillis noted one of his main concerns is in regards to EPA regulations that could restrict economic growth in the
state. US Senator Richard Burr remains optimistic about our state and the nations economy. As a global economy some pitfalls
remain with the Corporate Tax, regulations, and our energy needs. He does believe that higher education is one of NC’s
greatest assets. US Representative Paul Ryan spoke about the need to shrink our government overall and to reform the welfare,
health care and prison systems.
Pictured, from left to right: Kim and Jim Schmidlin; Congresswoman Renee Ellmers; Brandon and Hope Tyndall; Tammy
Williams; Heather Lawson and Phyllis Norris.
On Sept. 10 a Cake Cutting ceremony was held at LEE'S SHOES to
help kick off their 45th Anniversary celebration. To start things off Chamber
President Hope Tyndall welcomed attendees to the festivities citing long ties
between the Lee's business and Dunn.
Reverend W.A. Cox of Second Baptist Church of Dunn gave the
invocation. Mayor Oscar Harris congratulated the Lee's on 45 years of success
and wished them 45 (and more) years of continued prosperity. County
Commissioner Abe Elmore congratulated the family on doing just what a
business should do—prosper. Heather Reed, daughter of Elrod and Joyce Lee,
spoke on behalf of LEE'S SHOES graciously thanking everyone for supporting her family's store throughout the years. She also announced that LEE'S
SHOES has officially begun offering select styles for sale online at
www.leesshoesofdunn.com. Make sure to stop by the store located at 203 N. Wilson Ave for your shoe and boot needs. Don't
forget they now carry a wide variety of dance apparel and shoes.
Pictured, from left to right: President Hope Tyndall; Elrod Lee, Heather Reed and Joyce Lee, of LEE’S SHOES; Mayor Oscar
Harris: Commissioner Abe Elmore; and Rev. W.A. Cox.
On Sept. 17, a Ribbon Cutting was held to celebrate the
expansion of the Lady Bugs in the Attic store to a second space.
Owners David and Mindy Wright, along with Suzanne and Charles
Royal, incorporated the unit next door into their thriving antiques
and primitives gift shop. President Hope Tyndall told of her sons
love of the Button Machine. Friend and local pastor Charles Royal
gave the invocation asking for guidance and a light to show the
path to success. City Councilman Billy Barfield thanked the couple
for choosing downtown for their business, and when faced with
the need to grow, made the decision to stay. Make sure to stop by
109 N. Wilson Avenue, to see all that they have to offer. Buy a candle — they are the best!
Pictured, from left to right: President Hope Tyndall; Charles and Suzanne Royal, and David and Mindy Wright, of Lady Bugs;
Councilman Billy Barfield; and Dal Snipes, building owner and Chairman, Dunn Downtown Development Corporation.
The Governmental Affairs Committee hosted a Candidates Forum on Sept. 24 for the Dunn Municipal races which included
candidates for City Council and Mayor. The event was moderated by VP of Governmental Affairs Russell Galvan. Questions
were asked either of each candidate or randomly by seat, in which each candidate for that seat had an opportunity to respond.
Some of the topics included Education, Vision for the City, Downtown Revitalization, City Government Leadership, and Business
Growth. Each candidate was given 90 seconds to answer questions and two minutes for closing remarks.
All candidates were invited to participate, but due to scheduling conflict Ward 1 candidate Ben Neusmayer was unable
to attend, and Ward 4 incumbent Billy Tart is unopposed.
The forum will be shown on Time Warner Cable’s Government Channel, channel 7 at varying times. Copies of the forum
can be purchased from the City of Dunn Administrative office for $5 each.

Central Carolina Community College has been awarded $9.2
million First in the World grant by the U.S. Department of
Education. The four-year grant will be the largest in the 53-year
history of the college. The First in the World program is designed to
support the development, replication and dissemination of
innovative solutions. As well as provide evidence for what works in addressing
persistent and widespread challenges in post secondary education for students who are
at risk for not persisting in and completing college.
This First in the World grant titled “Carolina Works” will help spread the
proactive success coach model to nine additional North Carolina community colleges to
improve student outcomes statewide while also helping CCCC continue to refine its success coach/advising practice
locally.
A Midwest Higher Education Compact (MHEC) research brief recently listed Central Carolina Community
College among the most effective two-year colleges in the country, and the fourth most effective in North Carolina.
CCCC ranks “ Very High” in Effectiveness, meaning that its actual graduation rate is considerably above
anticipated rates for first-time, full-time, credential-seeking students. For more information on Central Carolina
Community College, visit www.cccc.edu.
