for youngsters of all ages to participate in. Enjoy all the beautiful and
historic things Caledonia Street has to offer and support the fantastic

PARKS & RECREATION: SPECIAL EVENTS
Local Ballerinas Attained
International Achievement
Two Sausalito girls, Alya Grace Duggan and Marina Turrini, achieved
the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) international standard, in the
recent annual examination held in Dublin.
The ballerinas went through one year of training in the Sausalito
Park and Recreation Center with the RAD Registered Ballet teacher,
Terry Wong-McDonnell ARAD, RAD RTS. Through hard work and
persistence, they were selected to enter the RAD Pre-Primary in Dance
examination.
Their progress was evaluated and they received great results and
compliments by the international examiner. They demonstrated the
required technical level and also showed knowledge of the syllabus
vocabulary with great imagination and poise.
Alya and Marina’s achievements will be rewarded with medals
and Certificates bearing the Royal seal.
The Royal Academy of Dance is the world’s leading dance
education organization, and is based in London, England. The RAD
programs, including ballet examinations, are fully accredited through
the University of Surrey in England. The qualifications are also
internationally recognized.
The RAD dance program is conducted in the Sausalito Park and
Recreation center. For more information, please call 289-4152.

Spring began slowly but picked up quickly as Parks and Recreation
began to gather momentum for the summer season. Summer doesn’t
happen without a great deal of planning and organization. The Parks
and Recreation Commission once again would like to thank the entire
staff for their continued enthusiasm and hard work which ensures a
successful summer season. Thank you, Mike Langford, Erin Stroud,
Jeff Dybdal, Anita Wong and all temporary staff, summer interns and
volunteers.
Spring events were once again popular and well attended. Our
Community Garage Sale was a resounding success. We were able to
take advantage of late spring weather and had another great Easter
Parade, Egg Hunt and Easter Bonnet contest at Dunphy Park
Both the Harrison Park and Robin Sweeney Park renovations are
moving forward. Watch for work to begin on Harrison Park any day now.
Thank you to all the volunteers that contributed to the Dunphy Park
beach cleanup. What a great improvement.
Summer event planning is well underway beginning with our
Caledonia Street Community Spring Faire and the Lions Club pancake
breakfast followed by the 2012 summer Jazz and Blues by the Bay
series at Gabrielson Park and our 4th of July Parade, picnic and
evening fireworks.
Remember, it is never too late to get involved. The Sausalito
Parks and Recreation department is continually seeking volunteers.
Continued support and involvement by the Sausalito community
guarantees a strong community focused Parks and Recreation
Department. If you want to teach or attend a Parks and Recreation
sponsored class contact Jeff Dybdal. If you want to volunteer for a
Parks and Recreation event contact Erin Stroud and finally if you just
want information about the Parks and Recreation programs contact
Anita Wong.
As a reminder the Sausalito Parks and Recreation Commission
Meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 6:300 pm in the Edgewater

COMMUNITY: ANNOUNCEMENTS
Japan Sister City Students
to Visit Sausalito in July
Every summer since 1988, when the Sister City program began between
Sausalito and Sakaide, Japan, either local students from Sausalito
and Marin have traveled to Sakaide or students from Sakaide have
visited Sausalito. It will be Sausalito’s turn again this year to welcome
our student guests and delegation from Sakaide from July 26 until
August 5.
The goal of the Sausalito-Sakaide student exchange visit is
not only that of cultural expansion, but one which strives for strong
educational activities that help expand the students’ knowledge base.
In addition, the students are also exposed to a wide variety of exciting
and entertaining events that take place in the Bay Area while they are
here. We hope they’ll return home with a newfound joy and wonder
at what they have learned, the friendships they have built and the
experiences they have had.
Essential to the strength and success of the Sister City exchange
program are past, present and future participants, without whom
these visits and the ongoing program would not be possible—local
students from previous exchange programs who participate in these
visits, contributing their knowledge and friendship to our guests;
the local community with whom the students interact through civic
and social events and who welcome students into their homes; and,
the City of Sausalito with whom the Sister City continues to have a
strong and supportive relationship—an integral part of the Sister City
program since inception.
The Sausalito Sister City program is run by the non-profit
corporation, Sausalito Sister City Committee, Inc. Would you like to get
involved? Here’s how . . .
Host Families
Sakaide students visiting in July 26–August 5 will stay with local host
families for their 10-day stay. Anyone with a spare bedroom can be a
host family, but having children is always a plus. Japanese language
skills are NOT necessary! (The students will have some grasp of
English.) The primary responsibility of a host family is transportation
to and from Sausalito City Hall each day and dinners with the family
most evenings. The rest is up to you. Your student will become a part
of your family forever and you will always cherish the memory of this
experience. To apply to become a host family, contact E.V. Gilbreath at
332-2282.
Sausalito Arts Festival
Visit our Food Booth over Labor Day weekend and enjoy ‘Japanese fries’
and authentic Udon noodles—a big hit last year!
Anyone interested in serving as an interpreter or chaperone, or joining
us in the Sister City Food Booth in September, may contact Susan Roe
at 331-3126.
Donations
The Sausalito Sister City Committee (a 501(c)3 non-profit organization)
welcomes financial contributions and greatly appreciates the
generosity of our donors. Contributions support the 2012 Sakaide
student visit as well as “scholarships” for deserving local students
participating in next year’s exchange visit to Sakaide. Donations may

BATTERY TOWNSLEY OPEN HOUSE
6/3, 7/1, 8/5, NOON–4PM
Open the first Sunday of each month. Battery Townsley at Fort Cronkhite
was San Francisco’s most extensive—and most secret—World War
II military fortification. From 1940 to 1948, it mounted two massive
battleship guns and housed more than 100 soldiers in an extensive
network of underground tunnels; during the Cold War, it was used as
an underground research facility.
Long closed to public access, Battery Townsley has been
refurbished and the public is invited to visit and explore this
labyrinthine fortification. Battery Townsley is reached via a moderately
strenuous hike up the Coastal Trail approximately half-mile north of
the Rodeo Beach parking lot. For further assistance to the site, call

Shhh.The Forest is Listening
By Ranger Lou Sian
Last spring, rather quietly, Muir Woods installed five new wayside
signs that encourage visitors to walk quietly and enjoy the natural
soundscape of the primeval forest. The signs are a gentle reminder that
Cathedral Grove is the park’s quiet refuge. The grove of mature trees,
located further from the bustling parking lot and park entrance, has
a history of reverence and quietude. Cathedral Grove is the site where
in 1945 delegates to the first United Nations came to commemorate
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the chief architect of the U.N.
Just minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge and a major metropolitan
area, the ancient forest is in sharp contrast to the busyness of the
surrounding modern world. On a weekday; in winter or spring; early
in the morning or late in the afternoon; not on a holiday; and just
about any rainy day; visitors may enjoy a few moments of quiet in Muir
Woods without intrusion from mechanical or human-made sounds.
But, it’s becoming more challenging as the San Francisco Bay Area’s
population of seven million people swells by the millions over the next
50 years.
With fewer places to go without the sound of a blustery motorcycle
or the rumbling airplane overhead or the constant drone of a nearby
freeway, future generations will be hard-pressed to find a quiet place
to listen to natural sounds for reasons of health, inspiration, and
restoration. Not only does noise affect the human species, but the
other species as well. Animals that depend on their sense of hearing
for avoiding predators, finding mates or safe territories, finding food,
and nurturing young, will be less fit to survive in urban areas.
Muir Woods offers evening programs to experience the natural
sounds of an old-growth forest on a safe and leisurely walk. Though
the forest and weather are less dramatic in the summer than in the
winter, visitors can listen to the watery music of Redwood Creek; enjoy
the forest fragrance on a still evening; and the gentle soughing of the
wind through the canopy of giant trees. Contrary to what is generally
observed by first-timers to Muir Woods; the forest is not silent, but
quiet.
The National Park Service Natural Sounds and Night Sky Division
funded the soundscape signs at Muir Woods. The natural soundscape
project team includes Mia Monroe, Michael Faw, Gina Farr, Lou Sian,
Tamara Williams, Karen Trevino, Erica Pilcher, and Bob Manning. The
park is open every day at 8am, including holidays. It closes at 8pm in
the summer.
Lou Sian is a park ranger and media specialist at Muir Woods
National Monument.
Kitchens With a View . . .
And Cooking,Too!
A spectacular two-day event celebrating Food, Wine, Music, and the Art
of “Cooking with a View” will be presented by the Sausalito Woman’s
Club Preservation Society (a 501 c (3) non-profit organization) as a
fundraising benefit in an on-going effort to maintain and protect the
Club’s landmarked building designed by Julia Morgan, California’s
first licensed woman architect. Friday night’s Cocktail Party at the
Clubhouse, 120 Central Avenue, features stellar hors d’oeuvres, a no
host bar, ‘live’ smooth jazz, along with a Culinary Silent Auction. Bid
on fabulous, must-have kitchen gear, rare vintages, future dining
experiences, and meet our celebrity cookbook author Diane Rossen
Worthington, twice winner of the James Beard Award and syndicated
food writer for the Chicago Tribune. On Saturday’s Tour, visit a series of
unique, private Sausalito kitchens—grand and galley—all within view
of the Bay that were designed for home chefs to whom good food, good
wine, and good company are the key elements of memorable meals—
not necessarily square footage. At any time along the walkable route,
you can stop by the “Food and Wine Tasting/Talking Tent” located
adjacent to one of the featured kitchens in a splendid garden. The
Talking Tent will feature a rotating group of presenters and chefs
including: Diane Worthington’s crostini varieties, live cooking demo
by Chef Clare Molla, chef instructor for Williams Sonoma, Steve Yafa’s
Food Pairing with Pinot Noir, Jason Fagan’s Backyard Bees, Chickens
and Gray Water Sustainability, Alison Harris’ Integrating Organic
Edible Plants in existing Landscapes, Shannon Baker will show us how
to cook for a crowd and more!
Also, at any time along the walk-able San Carlos Avenue route,
ticketholders are invited to drop by the SWC for a delicious luncheon
buffet & no host bar. A separate raffle for a sojourn in a celebrated
food-and-wine destination will be selected at the conclusion of the
festivities. Checks to reserve for the event should be made out to

COMMUNITY: ANNOUNCEMENTS
Maintaining Your Trees
Trees are some of the oldest living plant life and highly valued in
scenic areas. However, in Sausalito’s setting it’s much tougher for
trees to strive than in their native habitat and the lifespan of a tree
in Sausalito can be much shorter. Some trees are planted in locations
that do not suit their individual needs, can be damaged by large
storms, or become diseased and decay or rot. Therefore, when trees
become a threat to nearby persons or property they need to be removed.
The City often receives calls from residents with concerns that tree
cutting in their neighborhood could be illegal. The City’s regulations
allow for permits to remove or alter trees located on public and private
properties. The regulations vary depending if the tree is located in the
public right-of-way or on private property. The removal or alteration of
any tree located in the public right-of-way requires a permit reviewed
and issued by the Department of Public Works.
For private property trees, the permitting body is the City’s Trees
and Views Committee. A Tree Removal or Alteration Permit is required
for trees located on private property including:
• California Live Oaks, measuring 12 inches or larger in
circumference as measured at breast height;
• Other varieties of trees measured 30 inches or larger in
circumference as measured at breast height; and
• Any tree dedicated by the City Council or Sausalito Woman’s Club.
Yearly or routine pruning of private trees is not considered an
Alteration and does not require a permit. There are also certain types
of trees located on private property that are considered “undesirable”
and may be removed or altered without a permit, including; Blue
Gum Eucalyptus, Monterey Pine, Monterey Cypress, Coastal Redwood,
Blackwood Acacia, Bailey Acacia and Green Wattle.
Property Owners responsible for removing or altering trees without

Memorial Bench
Are you looking for a way to commemorate that special
someone or special day? The City of Sausalito is blessed with
many great benches to sit and look at the view and reminisce
over fond memories. These benches can be dedicated to create
that special place for you and your family. Benches are located
in various City Parks and along pathways throughout the City.
If you are interested in a Memorial Bench please contact the
Parks and Recreation Department at 415-289-4152.
Sausalito Village
Sausalito Village, an idea whose time has come, arrived at our shores
in October 2010 and has been growing exponentially ever since. One
of many Villages which have sprung up across the United States in
the past ten years, it is modeled on Boston’s Beacon Hill Village which
launched in 2001 when a group of Beacon Hill residents, determined
to remain in their homes as they aged, banded together to create the
kinds of support systems they would need to accomplish their goal.
If you are 60+ years of age and planning to stay in your home in
Sausalito as you grow older, you might consider enjoying the benefits
of membership in Sausalito Village. Under the auspices of its umbrella
organization, Marin Village, the key element of membership is a single
telephone number that you can call for referrals to service providers.
Some services are provided by volunteers and others are available for
a fee, often discounted, from thoroughly vetted third parties. Such
services might include transportation to the Airporter, shopping, and
doctors’ appointments; small household repairs; computer training
and support; referrals to qualified health care workers; respite and
support for caregivers.
In addition to the service hotline, membership opens up the
opportunity to become part of a vibrant community of people who
share in many social, cultural, and recreational events. SV members
have attended the Marin Symphony, the Fisher Exhibit of Photography
in San Francisco, and a presentation at the studio of the late Sausalito
artist, Walter Kuhlman. They also participate in classes in Yoga, flower
arranging, and memoir writing. Our “neighbors helping neighbors”
volunteer program invites you to participate in an active volunteer
corps already making a difference in our community.
Members of the steering committee are: Betsy Stroman, Chair,
Charlie Arenson, Doris Berdahl, Lee Follett, Ann Heurlin, Felicity Kirsch,
Jackie Kudler, Barb Lokkesmoe, Lois Prentice, Beverly Robbins, Rick
Seymour, Sharon Seymour, Stella Shao, and Dana Whitson. For more

Summer is a great time to visit The Marine Mammal Center to see
many fin-footed patients such as elephant seals and California sea
lions, and to learn about their natural history, battles they face in the
wild, and the connections we all share with them and the ocean. The
nonprofit hospital and visitor Center is located in the Marin Headlands
steps away from Rodeo Beach, is FREE to visit, and is open to the
public daily 10am–5pm. This summer, the Center has some wonderful
events planned to keep you and your family informed and entertained!
New this year is Marine Science Sundays—a FREE program offered
on the second Sunday of each month—that explores the in-depth
world of marine mammals through multi-media presentations given
by the Center’s experts, and docent-led tours. Upcoming topics for the
summer include an interactive presentation and Q&A on endangered
species, natural history of California sea lions, and a World Ocean’s
Day themed event in June that will explore the problems of ocean
trash, the impact on seals, sea lions and even whales, and solutions
to reduce, reuse and recycle! In addition, members of The Marine
Mammal Center will have access to special members-only night
events this summer which will be held the second Wednesday of each
month. Check www.MarineMammalCenter.org/events for details!

BOOKSTORE
Have you visited the Friends’ book store lately? It’s just upstairs from
the Library and always receiving new inventory. The store offers
nearly-new bestsellers, gorgeous antique classics, and everything in
between. Don’t miss the lavish art books, the music, and the children’s
corner. Hours are Mondays 9am-5pm and Wednesdays and Saturdays
10am-1pm. The Friends also maintain a book sale area in the Library,
including a section dedicated to children’s books. (Even if you don’t
have children yourself, it can be fun to revisit your old favorites.)
The Friends rely on your book donations to keep the book store
operating. You may drop off your donations in the Library at any time
during library hours. There is a donation barrel just inside the door.
Donations may also be left in the bin in the 3rd floor hallway outside
the book store entrance. A cart is available to bring books in from the
parking lot. If you have a large donation (multiple boxes or bags) we
would be grateful if you brought them during sale hours. If you cannot
plan a drop off when we are open, call Libby Wilkinson at 332-0206
and she will arrange to meet you at City Hall at your convenience.
Donations are tax-deductible.
VOLUNTEERS
Do you have an extra couple of hours a week or even once a month? Why
not join a congenial group in a friendly work environment? Volunteers
are always needed to help with book sales and lend a helping hand in
the Library. No experience is necessary; we will train you.
If you would like to help with the Monday and/or Wednesday book

we will gladly put you to work.
If you would like to volunteer in the library itself, contact Jim
Delano at 215-6538 or [email protected] and he will be happy
to schedule times that are convenient for you.
Sausalito Library Foundation
FOUNDATION? FRIENDS? WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
The Sausalito Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library are
independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with a common goal.
Both are dedicated to helping the library’s able staff and the Library
Board of Trustees maintain the excellence of one of our most valuable
community resources. In fact, the Friends established the Foundation
to provide long-term support, while they handled the immediate needs
of the library, particularly when the City budget was unable to provide
the necessary funds.
The Sausalito Library Foundation, established in 2006, is
sustained with financial contributions from the community. It supports
the Library through special programs and projects and helps provide
long-term financial stability. In its first three years, the Foundation
funded the Library’s strategic plan and the Library’s Early Childhood
Services program. In partnership with others, the Foundation also
underwrote a computer lab and the digitization of the Sausalito News
from 1895 to 1922. A Foundation grant in 2011 enabled the hiring
of a library planning and interior design firm to look at our Library’s
physical space, assess its ability to serve the community, and identify
strategies to (1) effectively use the space we have and 2) recommend
plans for the future. The Foundation will lend its support and match
funds with the Library’s capital improvements fund to move ahead
with a makeover using the Library’s current footprint. We will continue
to explore possibilities for a larger space.
Donations and bequests to the Foundation are used to maintain
a revenue source that supplements public funding and helps ensure
that our Library remains a current and relevant resource for our
community in the years to come.
Friends of the Sausalito Public Library, founded in 1961, provides
financial support for short-term needs and furnishes volunteer
assistance in the Library. Friends volunteers also manage the Friends
Bookstore on the top floor of City Hall fourteen hours a week and put
in extra hours receiving, sorting, and displaying used-book donations
from the community. Revenue from the book sales provides the lion’s
share of income for the Friends. With Bookstore profits and membership
dues, the Friends have provided ongoing support to the library when
needed.

SAUSALITO HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Keeping Sausalito History Alive
On Phil Frank Day, March 31, the Sausalito Historical Society opened
a new exhibition of Phil’s cartoons that ran weekly in the Marin Scope
from 1977-1984: FRITZ (THE COMIC WIT OF PHIL FRANK) CRACKERS.
The strip gently lampooned the local scene. This exhibition encourages
visitors to explore the hilarious strip, and to discover the man behind
the humor. Exhibition sponsors include the Sausalito Art Festival
Foundation, the Sausalito Lions Club, Supervisor Kate Sears and
Historical Society members. The exhibition is open to the public
through Labor Day at the Society’s newly renovated Exhibition Gallery
on the second floor of Sausalito City Hall, at 420 Litho St.. SHS Board
members Donald Sibbett and Susan Frank led a team of volunteers
who planned and produced the exhibit, and who hosted an opening
reception.
Historical Society docents are conducting free monthly boat tours
of the waterfront in partnership with Spaulding Wooden Boat Center.
The 45-minute tours depart from Spaulding’s dock at the foot of Gate
5 Road between 11 AM and 3 PM. Space is limited. Call 332-3179 for
more information.
The SHS Annual Meeting was held at 7pm on Tuesday, May 8 in
City Council chambers at 420 Litho Street. Members heard a report on
last year’s activities and elected directors for the 2012-2013 term.
Schools Program
Under the leadership of SHS board members Susan Frank and
Bob Woodrum, the Society continues to reach out to students from
Bayside School and Willow Creek Academy. This spring, classroom
presentations and field trips focused on noteworthy Sausalitans from
100 years ago. Each program involves approximately 40-50 students,
over a dozen docents, numerous parents, school administrators and
local businesses.
The Historical Society contributes a weekly history column to
the Marin Scope, and some of the most recent columns have been
posted on our website: www.sausalitohistoricalsociety.com. The
site also features links to other local historical organizations, and
to the Sausalito News, which is searchable online from 1885-1923.
Membership forms are available on the site, and dues can by paid via
PayPal or credit card. Historical Society books may also be purchased
on the site, and shipped anywhere in the country.
Facilities
With the help of memberships and an active docent program,
the Society—a volunteer, non-profit organization—maintains the
Phil Frank Research Room and Exhibit Room at 420 Litho Street. The
Society’s mission is to collect and preserve art, artifacts, photographs
and printed materials that document Sausalito’s history, and the
public is invited to visit from 11 am to 1 pm each Wednesday and
Saturday. We are continuing to upgrade the Society’s storage facilities,
thanks to generous donations from SHS members.
The Ice House at 780 Bridgeway carries books, greeting cards,
videos, posters, and note cards with stunning photographs of
Sausalito and particularly appealing shots of harbor seals and sea
lions off our waterfront. The Ice House is open Tuesday through Sunday
from 11:30am to 4pm.
You can step back to a dramatic time in Sausalito history
by touring the Marinship exhibit at the Bay Model . This display of
photographs, paintings and actual artifacts from the WWII ships
and yard was developed as a collaborative effort between the staff
of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Bay Model Visitor Center and the
Historical Society. Historic walking tours of the Marinship area are also
offered. Check the schedule at http://www.spn.usace.army.mil/bmvc/
bmjourney/calendar/bi_monthly/front.html.
The SHS also provides access to the collections for public and
academic research; and presents outreach programs to inspire local
interest in Sausalito’s history and to educate the visiting public and
enrich the community.

Community Newsletter 415-289-4100
We are nearing the completion of our 11th year! This year we are proud
to be sending our 28 graduates to a variety of secondary schools, both
public and independent. This is a class that exemplifies so much
of what we do here at Willow Creek. They are a group of thoughtful,
problem-solving young people. I am looking forward to following them
through the next years of the educational journey.
With the end of school, comes lots of planning for the coming
year. We will be adding a second third grade class. Welcoming a new
teacher into our community is always exciting and teachers acquiring
a grade level partner provides each of them with important support
and allows for cross-class fertilization of ideas and projects.
This year is the final year in which the Kellogg Foundation will be
sponsoring our garden, nutrition and cooking projects. During the three
years that we benefited from this grant, all of our classes received a
minimum of four grade level appropriate nutrition classes, five cooking
sessions with food raised in our garden and teacher support as to how
to incorporate gardening with other core disciplines. For instance, a
lesson on scrambling eggs produced from our three hens, turned into
a math lesson about volume, measurement and fractions which the
third graders gobbled up. We are working hard to raise the funds to
maintain this most important program—our garden is definitely part
of the heart of Willow Creek for both adults and students.
We are turning our focus for the coming year on a new curriculum
approach known as “common core standards.” We have always
adhered to standards based curriculum (with the content coming
from the State of California Department of Education) and now those
standards are changing. There will be standards for each content area,
but instead of covering a wide variety of content, students now will be
going deeper into each concept that is covered. This will encourage the
use of expository prose in areas such as science and social sciences
and not limit literacy to those classes labeled as English language
arts. As the 2012-13 school year progresses, we will be sharing how
Willow Creek is adapting to this new set of curriculum standards.
We believe that our emphasis on project based techniques and our
signature standard of “learning inside and out” will be strengthened
by using the common core approach.
If you are interested in learning more about Willow Creek, please
feel free to visit our website, www.willowcreekacademy.org or give
us a call at 331-7530. We will be around all summer on a shortened
schedule, so feel free to drop by.
POLICE NEWS
Citizen’s Police Academy
Join Class 18
Once each year, the Sausalito Police Department puts on its very
own Citizen’s Police Academy. This academy is designed to provide
an inside look at how the department operates. Anyone who lives or
works in the city of Sausalito is encouraged to participate. The classes
focus on a variety of topics, such as: policing goals, use of force
issues, drug recognition, DUI investigation, ethics, officer safety, laws
of arrest and many other topics. Input and feedback is always sought
from the class. Class participants are also given the opportunity to
be involved in simulated crime scene investigations and shoot/don’t
shoot scenarios. One of the classes is held at the Sausalito Fire
Department and the format is a question and answer period about the
services they provide, along with a tour of their building/equipment.
The City Manager and the Chief of Police also spend time during a
session going over different topics involving the city and public safety
issues.
All of the class participants are given the opportunity to go on two
ride-a-longs, one with a night shift officer and the other with a day
shift officer. Not only do the participants get an inside look at how
the department operates, but it is also a great way to get to know the
police officers on a more personal basis. The Police Department has
gained some very dear friends through contacts made in the academy.
Kaitee Jung wrote, “The Citizen’s Police Academy was highly
engaging and informative where I learned a great deal about the
Sausalito Police Department and the workings of law enforcement. I
enjoyed the classes taught by the Sausalito Police Officers, the field
trip to the command center and the company of fellow class members.
I feel safe in the knowledge that the fine officers protecting our town
are competent professionals who really care about the well-being of
Sausalito and its citizens.”
Janis Callon stated, “I was impressed by the compassion and
dedication all of the officers bring to their job every day. Due to the
economics of today, the officers are stretched and pushed to maximize
every minute of the day.” Janis is a business owner and Sausalito
resident who has also recently joined the VIPS (Volunteers in Public
Safety) team.
Karin Williams, a longtime Sausalito resident, participated in
the academy class and is now a very active member of the VIPS.
She states, “The Sausalito Citizen’s Police Academy provides the
opportunity to see first-hand the intensity and dedication which our
police officers apply on our behalf, every hour, every day. To have a
glimpse into their high-intensity, very demanding world for even a few
weeks time was awesome and inspiring, and truly a privilege.”
Here is what John Reed shared about his recent experience in
Class 17: “It was a real eye opener. The experience of a ‘ride-along’
with an officer on an actual patrol further convinced me that we are in
good hands. Every citizen of Sausalito should be proud of our police
department, and their ability and dedication to keeping our City a
safe place to live. I encourage anyone with an interest in how we
are protected each day and night by our police officers to take this
course.”
The academy runs for eight consecutive Wednesdays from 7pm
until 9:30pm. The class is open to people who live or work in Sausalito.
Summer of 2012 is the tentative start date. Anyone who is interested
in attending Class 18 of the Sausalito Citizen’s Police Academy
should contact Sergeant Stacie Gregory at 289-4188 or sgregory@

over twenty years. Gay’s program includes folk, pop, classical, jazz
and world music. She plays guitar, piano, flute and violin. She loves to
sing and most recently has sung with Jazz Acappella.
These courses are designed to be ongoing with sessions building
on previous instruction. Try it for four weeks and rest assured that your

Giggles & Wiggles:
Belly Dance Parent and Me
Get back into shape and feel like a Goddess, while having fun bonding
with your baby/ies. Grandparents, Nannies, Caretakers and Aunties
welcome too. This sacred and ancient art form is profound, irreverent
and playful. It was originally for women to prepare for pregnancy, birth
and postpartum. It creates a beautiful tone, shape and strength for
all those key areas: core abdominals (tummy), thighs, hips, pelvic
floor, buttocks, lower back. It enhances your body self esteem as you
learn all women are goddesses, no matter what age or shape they
are. Babies love the movements to help with colic, calming and going
to sleep. They are fascinated by all the sparkles and jingles of the
coins. According to one satisfied mom, “It is the only thing that I can
do for me that entertains both my children—my baby watches and
my toddler copies me.” Please bring your baby carrier/sling, a yoga/
exercise mat if you have one and wear stretchy pants and a scarf of
some sort for your hips. For brand new moms, please get permission
from your health provider before participating, generally once your
babe is six weeks old, you can resume exercise. No prior dancing
experience is necessary.
Tatanya Jardine is a mom to a vibrant toddler and has been Belly
dancing for 13 years. She has studied with many international Master
teachers and performed internationally. She loves performing for kids
birthday parties. She is also a Biodanza-Dance of Life facilitator under
supervision.www.vibrantlifeproductions.com

you’ll be dancing. If you can walk, you can dance. We’re not going
for a trophy here, folks! Social partner dancing is Cynthia’s specialty.
She coaches gentlemen how to lead and spin their partners. It’s great
exercise and it’s what women want: Dance with me! And, ladies, if
you’re solo, learn the dynamics of how to follow anyone who asks you
to dance.
Cynthia offers an original and unique approach to partner dance
instruction with rapid results. Is this ballroom dancing? Well, yes

less on footwork and emphasize upper body posture and elementary
steps—the closed position hold (in an intimate embrace) and simple
variations that can be easily led and comfortably followed. Swing, Fox

Back Pain Relief
In college, instructor Amy Lynn Sabel broke her back. Always very
active, she would not settle with daily back pain. This led her to
develop a series of assisted stretching and core strengthening
exercises that have kept her pain free and active. Amy wishes she
could stand on top of a mountain and shout what she’s developed
to the world, but the next best thing is offering the Back Pain Relief
class to interested students. 90% of Americans will have some kind
of back pain during their life! You don’t have to live with this pain. In
the past 30 years, Instructor Amy Lynn Sabel has helped thousands of
people of all shapes, ages and sizes live without back pain. The key to
eliminating back pain is learning and practicing these exercises every
morning—it only takes about 15 minutes and keeps you free of back
pain. The best part is - IT FEELS GOOD! Anyone willing to put in the
time can learn these basic exercises. We brush our teeth daily to keep
them healthy—doesn’t it make sense to also have a daily exercise
routine to keep your spine flexible, strong and pain free? Call Amy with
your questions 250-5439.
Rosen Method Movement
These classes are simple and fun and include different kinds of music
and support movements that are designed to improve alignment and
flexibility. By gently moving joints and muscles, we come in contact
with the parts in us that are open as well as those that have been
closed because of tension or physical and emotional pain. As range
of motion increases, the breath comes in more fully and we come in
touch with a new awareness of our bodies and a renewed feeling of
our selves.
Instructor Tina Kelly Green is a licensed Rosen Movement
teacher and Certified Rosen Method and Transformational Bodywork
Practitioner.
