In pursuit of puppy mills in 2011
Imagine a life trapped in solitary confinement where your entire
purpose is to give birth to puppies over and over and over again. No
affection. No companionship. Perhaps just food and water.
Too many dogs exist this way and it must end. These are the animals
who suffer for consumer demand. That’s why the Humane Society
implores all to adopt, don’t shop.
Sammy, a six-year-old Beagle, came from a breeder where more than
140 dogs lived. He was discovered alone in a wooden enclosure,
huddling in a dingy corner. His head bowed and shaking. He was
suffering from severe mange, aggravated by stress. He had lost his
entire beautiful, multicolored coat, and his sickly
gray skin was covered with
open sores.
The puppies he fathered
were sold in a local pet
shop. Lucky for Sammy, the

Volunteering is the hallmark of a
charitable life. And volunteers are
the life force of the Humane Society.
More than 200 volunteers have
found their passion as foster
care providers and help care for
hundreds of orphaned and owned
animals in need of temporary care.
Foster families are provided with
everything they need to nurture
animals who are too young, ill
or injured, or who require more
socialization before adoption.
Manabelle and her new dad, Dana
Edmunds, enjoy a day of paddle
boarding.
The Edmunds family began their
volunteer career as a Humane
Society pet visitation team with
their dog Rocky in tow to senior
care centers and hospitals. Sadly,
Rocky passed away a year ago. They
were still mourning her loss when
they responded to a call from the
Society’s foster care program to
open their home temporarily to
Manabelle, a water-loving female
Heeler.
“Fostering not only helps out
homeless animals, but it also
helped our family heal,” said Ginger
Edmunds. While many foster
families help animals until they are
available for adoption into another
home, the Edmunds decided to
make Manabelle’s foster home into
her permanent home.
The Hawaiian Humane Society
needs foster volunteers to open
their homes to a variety of animals
in need. Join our cause to help
save more animals. Contact Bianca
Radojevic at 356-2217 or btrombi@

information.

manager surrendered him to the
Humane Society during a routine
inspection where Sammy was
nursed back to health in foster care.
He was promoted for adoption
several times and was featured on
the news. Despite his playfulness
and affectionate demeanor, an
older, shy guy with a vision
impairment is just not as easily
placed as others.
Fortunately for Sammy, his foster
family adopted him. They were
charmed by his mischievous spirit
and passion for play with the way in
which he hid toys, treats and even
shoes in unusual places.
Hawaii, like most other states, does
not have laws that would help to
distinguish a large-scale breeding
operation from a responsible
breeder. That’s why the Humane
Society is determined to pursue
a bill to be sponsored by Senator
Clayton Hee during this year’s
legislative session.
This bill aims to ensure the welfare
and well-being of animals bred for
profit. Mandating access to exercise,
veterinarian visits, number of
breeding animals and more will be
proposed.
Help us rally support this year.

Did You Know?
Missouri, notoriously known
as the “Puppy Mill Capital of
America,” passed the Puppy
Mill Cruelty Prevention Act
in November 2010. The act
requires large-scale breeders to
provide each dog with sufficient
food, clean water, housing
and space. It also mandates
veterinary care, regular exercise
and adequate rest between
breeding cycles. The measure
creates a misdemeanor crime
for any violations. It also
prohibits any breeder from
having more than 50 breeding
dogs for the purpose of selling
their puppies as pets.

PetWalk honored 20
years of animal welfare
Hawaiian Humane Society’s 20th
Annual PetWalk was triumphant.
Together, $163,000 in donations
were collected. More than 2,000
people came out to Magic Island
bright and early with pets of all
shapes and sizes – dogs, cats, rabbits,
birds and even guinea pigs.
“This year’s celebration was about
raising funds, but most importantly,
it was in honor of 20 years of
improving the lives of animals
and people,” says Pamela Burns,
president and CEO of the Humane
Society.
PetWalk began as an
annual event 20 years
ago, the same year that
Pamela Burns joined
as the Humane Society
president. It has
become the Society’s
flagship fundraiser and
community celebration.
In its early days, the event
was a brisk walk around
Thomas Square and its popularity
called for a move to
Kapiolani Park.
For the last several years, PetWalk
has found its home at Magic Island
so that even more could join the fun.
Just as PetWalk has hit its stride,
so has the Society in setting the
pace for animal welfare progress.
In the last 20 years, nearly a dozen
new laws have strengthened animal
protection. A county law now
ensures safe traveling for animals
transported on the roadways.
Hawaii also enjoys a statewide cat
identification law, which requires
pet identification and owners to
spay or neuter cats allowed outside.
Pets are now eligible
to be included in
trusts to ensure
that an owner can
mandate pet care
provisions if he
or she should pass
away. More progress
includes felony-level
cruelty penalties, a clear
definition about what are
considered pet animals, a new
law that prohibits use of choke or
4
pronged collars when dogs are tied
up and stricter requirements.
Should disaster strike, emergency
shelters now include access for
pets. Adding to these far-reaching
victories are more than 110,000
adoptions, over 40,000 lost animals
returned home and nearly 140,000
sterilizations performed at the
Humane Society – all this in just 20
years.
Many thanks to our top 2010 PetWalk
fundraising teams for their support

integration of dispatch and field

lives too. Our large-scale rescues
this year have spanned from rabbit

As we head into 2011, the Humane
Society reflects on the many
accomplishments of our last fiscal
year – from July 2009 through June
2010.
Animal admissions were down
by 5 percent, which means more
people are keeping their animals.
More good news is that adoptions
increased by 200 animals.
Saving more lives together has
meant a 57 percent expansion in
foster care. We also doubled the
number of foster care providers.
The Humane Society performed
nearly 600 more sterilizations this
year – bringing the grand total of
sterilizations to more than 7,400.

Teen activism ignites in West Oahu
Student activism for animals
is at an all-time high on the
Waianae Coast. The Humane
Society has selected 14 high
school youth to serve on its
Waianae Coast Teen Advisory
Panel.
Students attended a day-long
training in November to learn
about animal protection and
laws, team building, leadership
development and service
learning. Each student will
rally teams of teens for service
projects that benefit animals.
The Waianae Coast Teen
Advisory Panel is made possible

Helping Waianae be the
best community for pets
The Humane Society opened for business
at the Waianae Farmer’s Market on Oct. 9
to offer a host of free services. Nearly 80
pet owners got their pets microchipped.
Free pet spay and neuter surgery coupons
were given away. And free food was
awarded to families to help more than 140
pets. Waianae student volunteers led the
event as our advocates for the animals.

LACES WE LOVE TO VISIT
The Plaza Assisted Living Center
The Plaza Assisted Living Center is one of Hawaiian
Humane Society’s favorite places to visit with our
pet visitation teams. Its community of residents,
family members, loved ones and staff is a large
ohana that understands the importance of animal
companionship for those who no longer can own
pets.
Our pet visitation program, in which we bring the
joy of animals to senior and health care facilities,
has increased from 85 facilities to 143 facilities. Join
us as a volunteer!
Taking stock in the Humane Society
An investment in the stock market can be a gamble,
but investing in Oahu’s animals is always a good buy.
Gifts of stocks and bonds have traditionally been a very
popular way to support the Humane Society. If you have
stocks or bonds that have increased in value since you
purchased them, you can use them to make a charitable
gift to the Humane Society.

Jean Marchant - A loyal friend to animals
The Humane Society salutes Jean Marchant, recently
retired board member, who has been a most loyal friend
to the animals. She has served as a board member for
45 years in honor of her life-long passion for animals.
For many years, she served as one of Hawaii’s most
prominent horse judges. When asked what inspired her
decades of service she said: “The Society’s commitment
to helping us all be better people through our love for
animals. And the Pet Loss Support program, which
offers comfort and counseling for those who have lost a
loved one.”

The gift of shelter from the storm
During hurricane season, we issued a call for help to stock up on supplies for pet-friendly
emergency shelters. Mahalo to so many for their help. Mahalo to so many who joined us as

Kids love animals
Mahalo to 12-year old
Ashley Cheah of Brea,
California who donated
proceeds from recycling
in her hometown.
During her vacation to
Hawaii, she visited our
shelter to donate $40 for
the animals of Hawaii.
Kudos to California Girl
Scouts Locy Durant, 17,
and Ariel Palmer, 16,
who saved their money
for over a year to travel
to Hawaii and decided
that part of their service
project was to donate $60
to us to help animals.
Must love dogs
Dog lovers and their best friends enjoyed a fun-filled
day at the Humane Society on October 23 to celebrate
Love a Dog month. Festivities included: a feature film
presentation of Marmaduke on the lawn; 66 pets were
microchipped; and 57 homeless animals found new
families.
Foodland’s Give Aloha
Hawaiian Humane Society raised more than $4,700
from Foodland Supermarkets Ltd. and Western
Union Foundation’s Give Aloha program, a $400
increase from last year! Donations will help feed
shelter animals.
Many thanks to seventh graders Asia Ono, Ellie Shimatsu
and Nicole Burgess of Hawaii Baptist Academy, who did
three weeks of solicitation and yielded $40, newspapers,
shoe boxes, towels, toys, collars, rugs and an assortment
of pet food for shelter animals.
