Mehndi is a form of temporary skin
decoration with henna, originating
in ancient India. Traditionally,
mehndi were applied for special
occasions like weddings or festivals.
Brides were decorated with intricate
patterns on their palms and feet.
In some areas of India, Pakistan,
Bangladesh and Nepal the grooms
were also decorated with mehndi.
To create mehndi henna is applied to
the skin with either a brush or a cone.

Asian sweets
Sweets have a long and rich history
in Asian culture. Traditionally given
as gifts at weddings, births or any
happy event, there are a vast range
of sweets to choose from. Well
known delicacies include the sweet
and sticky jalebi, gulab jamun or the
popular bright yellow ladoos, but
there are more modern variations
including chocolate barfi! There
are numerous varieties to choose
from with each area in South
Asia providing a slightly different
variation.
Dosa
The dosa is a crepe made from rice
and black lentils, typically eaten in
South India, although it’s popularity
has spread across south east Asia.
The rice and lentils are soaked and
ground into a fine powder and water
added to make a batter. This batter
is then thinly spread onto a hot pan

The
History
of
Seven Kings
and
Goodmayes
Seven Kings and Goodmayes are just to the east of Ilford, next to the ancient Roman road
between London and Colchester. Seven Kings comes from the Saxon ‘Seofecingas’ meaning ‘the
settlement of Seofeca’s people’. Seofeca was most likely a chieftan or minor king of the Saxons.
The Saxons were originally from Germany established a number of kingdoms in England. The
East Saxon Kingdom of Essex was established in 527 AD and remained a separate kingdom for
almost 300 years.

The tram passes between motor buses and lorries, which won the competition for road
space with the tramway. The horse and cart belongs to Ilford’s rural past.
There is also a myth that seven Saxon
kings met at a stream, that used to
run from Hog Hill to the Roding, to
water their horses while out hunting,
but there is no documented evidence
that this is more than a legend.
The first recorded use of the name
Sevekyngg or Sevekyngges was
in 1285.
Historically Seven Kings was part
of the ancient parish of Ilford and
also part of the Becontree Hundred,
which is commemorated by the
Beacontree estate just the other side
of Goodmayes Park.
The name Goodmayes can be traced
back to John Godemay, who in 1319
leased the land from the Abbess of
Barking, but it is uncertain whether
the land took its name from him or
whether he took his name from the
land. Goodmayes does not appear on
maps until the 1770s.
Goodmayes and Seven Kings
remained largely undeveloped
farmland until the end of the
nineteenth century. Between 1898
and 1910 the urban developer
Cameron Corbett (who later became
Baron Rowallen) began to build
estates in the area to the South of the
Railway lines and in so doing helped
set the suburban nature of the area.
To ensure the success of his project
he pressed for new rail stations in
the area and in 1899 Seven Kings
station was built with Goodmayes
following in 1901. The Edwardian
terraced housing built by Corbett
continues to dominate the area
and the Scottish street names
celebrate his Scottish ancestry.
In 1901 the West Ham Asylum
(now Goodmayes Hospital)
opened on the former grounds
of Blue House Farm. The
architect was Lewis Angell,
who based the asylum on a
‘pavillion’ system. It was built
of red brick with white lintels
and was originally designed to house
800. In 1918 its name changed to
West Ham Mental Hospital and then
after the Second World War, under
the new NHS, it changed its name
to Goodmayes Hospital. During
World War II four wards were
converted to an emergency base
hospital. Like much of the east End
it suffered from heavy bombing.
700 incendiary bombs, 22 high
explosive bombs, 4 oil bombs, 2
V1s and 4 V2s landed in
the estate.
In 1909 philanthropist Andrew
Carnegie created a public
library for the area. The most
recent landmark is the new Tescos
superstore which opened in 1987.
Seven Kings and Goodmayes became
part of Iford Urban District in 1894
and part of the London Borough
of Redbridge in 1965 when Ilford
parish and municipal borough
were abolished by the London
Government Act.
