ABS w/ Hydraulic Brake Assist
What?
The Anti-lock Brake System, or ABS, is designed to help a driver
maintain control of a vehicle during hard braking.
The ABS system responds to wheel lock-up during braking by
alternately increasing and decreasing hydraulic pressure in the brake
lines of the affected wheel or wheels.
ABS is standard on all Volkswagen models.

How?
Volkswagen’s ABS is a four channel system with a
control module, and speed sensors at all four
wheels. The hydraulic controls and ABS electronic
control module are housed together as a single unit.
EDL (Electronic Differential Locking) is a function that uses the
operating information and components of the ABS to
reduce the possibility of wheel spin during
acceleration.
The ABS control module receives wheel speed
information from sensors located at each wheel.
During braking, if a wheel speed sensor detects that
a wheel’s rotational rate decreases suddenly, the ABS
electronic control module will reduce the hydraulic
brake pressure to that wheel.
Once the wheel resumes normal rotation, the ABS
electronic control module instructs the hydraulic
controls to apply pressure to the brake again. This
cycle of pressure application and reduction repeats
to keep the wheel or wheels at their optimum
braking point.

Drivers should never pump the brakes in a vehicle equipped
with ABS. This will negate the effectiveness and operation of
this feature.
Why?
Benefits:
- Helps maintain steering control under severe
braking conditions
- More effective braking under extreme road
conditions
- Greater driver confidence in all weather
driving conditions
<< Volkswagen Trivia >>
During ABS operation, the cycle between pressure reduction and pressure build-up can occur
as many as 12 times per second.
