April - Banner of Love
The Banner of Love Godly sorrow worketh repentance Page 16 -- From Page one . . . repentance that we find. The first one that I want to consider is a common one we find in our world today. It is one that men will profess when they are caught and suffer punishment for their deeds. It is is a false repentance and is soon repented of. Years ago, when we were children, three of my cousins and I were walking through the cotton patch to the creek to play. One of my cousins was three years older than me, one was a, year younger, and one was three years younger. The youngest was carrying a BB gun. The youngest cousin was a little ways ahead of the rest of us. The oldest cousin began to pick up dirt clods and was pelting the youngest. If you have ever been hit with a dirt clod, you know that it is not pleasant. The youngest pleaded for his older brother to stop throwing clods, of course he didn’t. The youngest turned and started coming toward us, and as he got close he was still being pelted by the dirt clods. He raised the BB gun and began to shoot at the ankles of his oldest brother. The oldest cousin was running and begging God’s grace is the only hope An unregenerate man is unaware of the fact that he is dead in sin, and therefore he is not interested in any offer of salvation. Those to whom God has revealed their lost and ruined condition do not have to be talked into “accepting” deliverance. It is not a matter of letting” anybody save them. They simply desire to be saved from the awful state in which they find themselves. The whole freewill theology is an unworkable system that will not square with good sense, reason, or logic. God’s grace is the only hope of an enlightened sinner, and the only way by which any will see heaven. — Elder Ralph Harris * * * What a glorious Saviour Worldly powers made the tomb of Christ as sure as they could (See Matt. 27:65), and no earthly pains were spared to keep Him in that sealed encasement. If there had been any way the Jews could have kept Him from rising again they most surely would have done so. The last thing they wanted was for Him to come out of that tomb as He had said He would do, for this would have proven that they had crucified the for relief from the BB gun. He was telling his youngest brother how sorry he was and that he would not do it again. Sounds a lot like repentance doesn’t it? As soon as the younger stopped shooting him with the BB gun and started back toward the creek, my oldest cousin picked up another dirt clod and nailed him one more time. A false repentance is soon repented of. The true repentance is one that comes as God brings conviction to the heart. Godly sorrow is like David when Nathan had come to him and told him “thou art the man.” David says I have sinned against God. Nathan brought the word of God, and God brings the sorrow. Paul had written or planted, Apollos watered, but God gives the increase. When God’s word is preached or read, it convicts us, and the Spirit within us convicts us we have two witnesses that work together to bring godly sorrow. As God works in us giving the increase, we bring forth fruits worthy of repentance. “For it is God that works in us both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Love, – Norman Jones Elk City, Oklahoma Lord of Glory. Without doubt, they made that tomb as sure as they possibly could; but they could not make it sure, for Christ had revealed the fact that He would come forth out of it after three days and three nights, and not a word of Him could be broken or defeated (See John 10:35). He had spoken it, and He also brought it to pass; He purposed it and He also did it. 0, what a glorious Saviour and Redeemer! — Elder Ralph Harris * * * If God be for us . . . There is no such thing as ultimate triumph over God’s children by the wicked or by any other power, spiritual or otherwise. The apostle Paul summarized it very well when he said, “If God be for us, who can be against us?” All opponents and oppressors must ultimately be defeated and put to shame. “Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matt. 13:43). “He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Php. 1:6). There can be no doubt as to the eternal security of God’s children. — Elder Ralph Harris (EDITOR’S NOTE: Elder Ralph Harris is a regular contributor to ‘The Christian Pathway’ published by Elder Mark Green. April 2013 Balanced disciple . . . -- From page one . . . treasured possession given to man. it separated him from the beasts. Man can think, reason, decide and judge. A little poison in this fertile field is very dangerous, and he knows how and where to apply the same for the most. destructive results. Don’t expect to be pitied; he is both a liar and a murderer. He usually begins by distorting and discrediting the truth as he did with our Mother Eve. He either informs the believer that the doctrine is worthless, or he places so much, emphasis on it, until they become convinced it is everything, and nothing else is necessary. Either position creates an imbalance, as’ other areas are excluded or neglected. We have people like this, and they fail to realize it is the work of Satan. Careful analysis will certainly bear this out. These people believe as long as they apply themselves to the doctrine, that is all that is required. Doctrine is the first item of profit listed in Paul’s expression to Timothy, but it is not the only one. Read 2nd Tim. 3-16,17, the need for understanding the doctrine is crucial, it is the framework of the building, however, more is required than only the frame work. The mind is the most fertile field for Satan to till, and where he can wreck the greatest havoc. So many little children of’ God have suffered as a result of his work in their minds. The sad. thing is, be can approach and apply in so many ways it would be an impossibility to mention them. The next area of Satan’s work is the experience. Experience is what is felt, and brought to the attention in various ways. It deals with the emotions. Emotions are important, and, attention should be paid to them. However, if profession becomes emotionalism the believer is out of balance and Satan is the victor. We have some who put too much emphasis on the emotions, to them, religion is only emotion. Only what they are able to feel merits their attention and confidence; if they fail to feel anything then to them there is little else. An imbalance follows. Another area of the believers’ profession is practice. Practice is what is done. The scriptures speak of this area as works. Not many are guilty of going to the extremes in this area. However, there are some who are of the opinion that religion consists of what is done only, so an imbalance. If Satan can convince, the believer that doctrine is important, that emotions are worthless, and all that really matters is what is done, the victory is his. We desire spiritual health as well as natural, but are we temperate, and moderate? The Apostle Paul mentioned the fact he was not ignorant of Satan’s devices, however we fear many of us may be. He has many angles of attack and so many are made captives of him at his will until they are in his snares without knowledge of the fact. May the Lord give grace, and understanding that as the prophet said, we may know the way our feet must go. -- Elder Jerry Newman The Banner of Love “He Brought Me to the Banqueting House, and His Banner Over Me Was Love” — Songs of Solomon 2:4 “Thou Has Given a Banner to Them That Fear Thee, That it Might Be Displayed Because of the Truth” — Psalms 60:4 Volume 81 - Number 4 Lubbock, Texas 79493 Copyright 2013 $12.00 Per Year April 2013 Godly sorrow worketh repentance By ELDER NORMAN JONES “For godly sorrow worketh repentance: to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. – II Corinthians 7:10 The first thing that we need to understand about this verse is who it is talking to. Paul tells us in the first verse of this chapter as he states; “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” The (dearly beloved) were God’s born again children. They already had eternal life. This is evident by the fact that Paul says “Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you” However they were struggling with their walk as disciples of Jesus Christ. Paul writes in 1st Corinthians to encourage this Church to deal with their walk because the Church had envying, and strife, and divisions, and even fornication among its members. Salvation means deliverance. This Church needed deliverance or salvation from a walk after the filthiness of the flesh to a spiritual walk in the pattern set by Jesus Christ. With these thoughts my mind now let us consider the thought that “godly sorrow worketh repentance.” There are two kinds of -- See Back Page Please Elder Norman Jones resides at Elk City, OK. He is a retired oil company munitions expert. He currently serves as pastor of the New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, Snyder, OK., and Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church near Elk City, and also serves the Bethesda Primitive Baptist Church at Mt. Elder Jerry Newman was the long-time pastor of the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church in Duncan, Oklahoma. He died in 1994. He was the father of Elder Henry Newman of Arapaho, Oklahoma, Sister Celia Kreie of the Duncan church, and Sister Marilyn Hughes of the Purcell, Oklahoma church. One of the most needful possessions of a follower of the Lord is a proper balance. Most of us realize how necessary it is to maintain proper balance in some areas of life. To lose physical balance simply means we will fall. If we have experienced a disturbed equilibrium we can testify to the fact. We also realize at least to some extent the necessity of a balanced diet in order. to insure proper health, and avoid disease. In each area of life continuous application is required to avoid excess. Doubtless great discomfort and suffering has resulted from failure in this category. We can hardly over estimate the danger resulting from neglect both physically, and spiritually. Much has been written how for people to live more fall and satisfying lives; the authors drawing extensively from, matter supplied from intellectuals who derive just enough of the truth from scriptures to favor their offering. The desire of Satan is to create an imbalance in any areas of life, so as to frustrate the work of God. This he cunningly attempts with great craftiness. So often, we the victim, are unaware of what is taking place, or that it is the devils work, until the door of the snare is closed. At this time, let us consider the area of. the Disciple’s profession. We assume you are a disciple (A follower) of the Lord, and that you have made a profession of faith. What is Satan to do now? Will he leave you alone? Absolutely not, our troubles have only just begun. If he is able to cause an imbalance in your Christian life, he is thereby frustrating the work of God, and causing great concern; poor spiritual health, and bringing dishonor upon the entirety. The first area of attack is the mind. In Romans 5:2 we read, “By whom also we have access by faith unto this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” All men do not believe because all men do not have faith. Faith is a gift of God. If you believe God and believe in Jesus Christ, this was given to you. Our headline verse reads, “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for his sake.” In Ephesians 1:19-20 we are told that believing is according to the working of God’s mighty power which raised Christ from the dead. This wonderful gift enables a person to believe the record God has given of His Son. The believer is able to accept the fact that the Son of God came to this earth to undertake for him all that God required for his salvation. The believer is able to place his eternal state into the hands of Jesus Christ and feel within his heart that all is safe and secure. As you can see, believing opens many doors for God’s child. Do you believe? If you do, it vas given to you by God rn behalf of Christ. If you believe, you can rest in the good news that God loves you and Christ died for you. You will note in the verse that there is also another blessing which belongs to the child of God, and is given to him in behalf of Christ. This blessing is to “suffer for his sake.” Most religious people do not consider suffering to be a blessing of God. In Acts 5:41 the disciples are stated to have accepted suffering for Christ as a blessing. We read, “...and they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name.” Suffering for Christ is not easy, but neither is believing. They are put together in Phil. 1:29 to show that a person can only do them by the grace of God. - August 2013 - The Banner of Love LUBBOCK BAPTISM -- Elder Kenny Venable, pastor of the Primitive Baptist Church of Lubbock, Texas, is shown baptizing Brother Fritz Richards on the 4th Sunday morning in March. Richards One of the toughest jobs for parents is teaching their children about the practical affairs of life. I am not talking about “theory”, but about the real-life issues they will face in school, on the “streets”, on their jobs, and as they start out in their own lives. I do not know of anyone who feels they have done an acceptable of teaching their own kids. Most of us do not know how to teach our kids and grandkids, or even how to approach them, especially on those “sticky” subjects that we are too embarrassed to discuss, but that our children really need frank and honest discussion and guidance. Well, there is a book now available in most bookstores that can be of real help. It covers every subject you need to go over with your children. It is called “The Bible”. Every subject you need to discuss with your children and grandchildren is covered in the bible. We make the mistake too many times of assuming that today’s world is too complicated and too technical to be able to use the bible as a reference. We assume the problems of yesterday are simple as compared to the problems in the world today. But, as Solomon tells us at Ecclesiastes 1:9: “there is no new thing under the sun.” There is not a single problem in our lives today, that has not already been documented in the bible. Without question, the wisest man in the history of the world, not counting Christ, was Solomon (see 1 Kings 3:12). His book of Proverbs in the bible is the single-best source for teaching children about the affairs of life, the “birds and the bees”, dealing with people, fending off fools, etc. We will shell out big dollars at leading book stores for award-winning children books or newly released psychology books to help us teach our kids. Yet, we already have the wisest man in the history of the world offering his wisdom in the Book of Proverbs for free. The only one catch to his teachings in Proverbs -- we actually have to open our bible and read. We are told in the opening verses of the first chapter of Proverbs that it can be used to provide subtile teaching to the young and simple, and also to increase the wisdom of those who are already wise. That means while we use the Book of Proverbs to teach our young, we will ourselves also grow wiser. Let us look at just one method of teaching by use of Solomon’s wisdom. The idea of discussing subjects such as sex, infidelity, and adultery is difficult to launch into with our teenagers. Show them first that the Lord gave Solomon wisdom greater than any man who will ever be on earth (1 Kings 3:12). Then ask them to read the 5th chapter of Proverbs and schedule a time later to talk to them about it. You will not have to figure out a way to raise these difficult subjects because Solomon does it for you. Go through Proverbs 5 verse by verse and ask them their opinion of what Solomon is teaching. Then give them your opinion of what he teaches. Solomon opens the door for us to difficult subjects without the awkwardness that we might feel discussing those subjects “cold.” How about teachings on the problems of drinking, drunkenness and even drug use? Ask your kids to read Proverbs 23:29-35 and ask them what they think each verse is saying. See how Solomon addresses how such things as drinking and drugs causes a person to lose their happiness, their beauty, their judgment, their moral tongues, and their moral inhibitions. Want to warn your son about running with gangs and the problems of “following the crowd”? Ask them to read and discuss Proverbs 1:10-19 and figure out what Solomon recommends. Want to talk to you child about how to go into a business of their own? Read Proverbs 20:29. There is strength and energy when one is young; but there is wisdom with age. If you are young, find yourself an older, experienced person with whom to counsel your business plans. If you are old and experienced, find yourself some young energetic people to provide the physical labor. A young man full of energy makes many mistakes in business when he ignores the advice of an experienced “gray head”. A “gray head” makes a mistake in business when he thinks he is still young and can do all his own “heavy lifting” over long hours. One that confuses many is Solomon’s wisdom at Proverbs 26:4-5. The two verses seem to contradict each other: do you answer a fool or not? Christ himself follows Solomon’s advice at Matt. 16:1-4. Proverbs 20:4 tells us not to answer a fool if it lowers us down to the fool’s level of thinking. Verse 26:5 tells us to answer the fool wisely that tells the fool that he is indeed a fool. Christ refused to answer the fools at Matt. 16:14 with a gimmick miracle (a “sign”); he did not lower himself to their “foolish” level simply to prove who he was. But he does answer the fools to prove themselves as fools as to how they already follow signs in the sky; when they should need only the proof of the Scriptures as the only “sign” necessary. What does Solomon say are the worldly benefits we will enjoy for our studying the bible, and listening to preaching? Proverbs 3:1-2. Go read it! April 2013 The Banner of Love Meetings... WOODRUFF The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. -- Psalms 12:6 II Tim. 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of God may be perfect thoroughly furnished unto all good works. In this present time that we are living in, we are witness to a great falling away, a defection from the truth h of Gods word. Mankind seems, no more, to be able to endure sound doctrine from Gods word, but rather heap to themselves men; and yes women, who teach for truth, fables. Are they unlearned, or willfully ignorant? God knows. What and who is behind this, if not Lucifer himself? We can read all manner of theologies, but is it based in the truth, if the Word won’t support it, then leave it lay. The Lord, the great I Am, said what he meant, and meant what he said. The smallest child with the ability to read can; with Gods help, understand what the Word says. It was inspired by God for our learning. Written for the simplest of us, not in a manner that would require some great higher level of education to grasp and understand. Just take it for what it says. For instance if the Word says His feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives (Zec. 14:4), then you can believe His feet shall. Some might say that this was fulfilled in His first advent, but when we look at the text we find that when this event takes place, the mount shall cleave in two. Is the mount split? This return is no surprise when we take the Word to mean what ‘t says. The angels told the Apostles, this same Jesus you see going away would return in like manner (Acts 1:11). Peter tells us that the heavens must receive Him until the restitution of all things (Acts 3:21). The heaven has indeed received Him, but the until gives us great hope and a sure knowledge that He shall come again. Jesus himself told Israel that they would see him no more till they say blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord (Matt 23:39), the word till indicates a future event, the second advent of Christ. How is it then, that it is taught, that Jesus will never return to this earth? What text is used to prove we will go to heaven to float on a cloud and play on a golden harp? This, brethren, is theology, not scriptural. What the Word does say is that He has made us Kings and Priests and we shall reign on the earth (Rev. 5:10). Jesus himself told us that the meek shall inherit the earth (Matt. 5:5, Ps. 37: H, 18, 22, 29, 34). In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established (II Cor. 13:1). The Word is full of the second advent of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Eze. 43:4 tells us that He shall come into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east, Ps 24 tells us that He shall ride into Jerusalem, the King of glory mighty in battle, He shall come through the Beautiful Gate, also called the Golden Crate, Joel 3:16 tells us that He shall roar out of Zion. With all this evidence from the Word of God, to teach otherwise is to teach error, or fables, and yet there is a great resistance from our own brethren, yea even an opposition to these truths. They do not oppose us but rather God, to their own destruction. We are the watchmen, set upon a wall (Eye. 33:7-8), if we do not tell the truth., if we place stumbling block before the children of God, is we cause them to err Isa. 9:16) we will answer (Matt. 18:6-7). Lucifer, a liar and the Father of lies (John 8:44), would have us lulled into a false security. It is he that promotes these theologies’ that denies the Lords return, that denies the coming of a man of sin (II Thes. 2:3), that denies the great wrath that will come upon the whole earth. His spirit has been in the world (I John 4:3) from the beginning of the church age to say the least, but the day is coming and may very well be here even now, when the actual person known as the son of perdition, the man of sin, the beast, the anti-Christ, shall be in the world. What is it that keeps him (anti-Christ) from being known or made manifest, is the Holy Spirit, which hinders this man (II Thes 2:7) being revealed. However when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to the nearness of this earth to call the dead in Christ from the grave and then change us that remain and catch us up to him, the work. of the Holy Spirit °n the church will come to an end. Lucifer would like to have these facts hidden from mankind, for he has an agenda, he always has had a plan. Look at Isa. 14:13-14, his desire is to be worshiped as God (II Thes 2:4). Many will say that these events are p and were fulfilled before Christ came, but we will u‘se Jesus on words in Matt 24:15, where he says When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, this is a future tense sentence, the Lord put this in the future, there- fore I believe that we can also. Some may even say that all prophecies were fulfilled in 70 A.D., but in truth this just. won’t hold water, for the Book of Revelation was written in about 95 A.D. by the Apostle John on the isle of Patmos where he was exiled by the Emperor Domition. So, a quarter of a century after many scholars contend that all the prophecies were fulfilled John wrote of future events upon this earth. Some may contend that the Book of Revelation is a sealed book, but again we will use Gods word to prove this to be untrue. The inspired word of God tells us not to seal up the words of this prophecy (Rev. 22: 10), and again blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy (Rev. 1:3). So, we should study to show ourselves approved of God (II Tim. 2:15), and not men. Let us not consider the commendation of men, but rather, let us consider ourselves servants to the most High, and promotes his word and not men’s. – Elder J. V. Woodruff Marshfield, Mo. He was born in Mississippi on August 21, 1948, to James Melvin Myers and Doris Helen Westbrook Myers. He was a graduate of Bogue Chitto Attendance Center, William Carey College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Preceding him in death were his wife, Diane Jones Myers; parents, Elder Melvin and Doris Myers; and one sister, Patty Myers. Survivors are his fiancée, Elizabeth Holland Hawkins; sons, James Frederick Myers and wife, Katrina Isaac Myers of Dallas, and Joseph Bryant Myers and wife, Kristy Chabert Myers of Galliano, Louisiana; daughters, Candace Myers Broadway and husband, Mitchell, of Charlotte, North Caroline, and Lynnsey Myers Douglas and husband, Gordon, of Brandon; sisters, Sandra Myers Laird and husband, Russell, of Brookhaven, and Polly Myers Reeves and husband, Dennis, of Bogue Chitto; seven grandchildren, Isaac Myers, Noah Myers, Joseph Myers, Gracie Myers, Ella Myers, Caleb Myers and Samuel Broadway; and numerous nieces and nephews. Brother Randy was a faithful pastor to Union Primitive Baptist Church in Ruth for 24 years and to New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Tylertown. He treasured the churches and the church members were his best friends. He had endless faith in God’s power and never hesitated to pray for anyone, any time, any place. Whenever anyone was worried he knew the best way to help was to pray. He prayed for the sick, the lonely, for children taking important test, even for chickens to begin laying eggs so his church members could make a living. Bro. Randy’s faith and optimism didn’t end with the church; he carried it with him in every endeavor he undertook. Bro. Randy was blessed with a very sharp mind and a true innovative spirit. As founder and president of Super Sweet Inc., he developed a process for turning waste sugar cane by products into a useful and valuable resource. He enjoyed his work and was happy applying his mind to an environmental problem and finding a logical solution. Elder Myers always said his most valuable possession, though, was his family. He and his wife Diane, raised four children who love each other and the Church, all have college degrees, wonderful spouses, and beautiful healthy children. His grandchildren were his greatest joy and he enjoyed trying to spoil them all every chance he got. We are thankful for the life he lived, the joy he brought to everyone around him, his boundless generosity and most of all his faith in God that never failed him. http://riverwoodfamily.com/index.php/component/k2/item/236-elder-randal-myers Funeral services for Elder Myers were held at the Union Primitive Baptist Church in Ruth, Mississippi. The Banner of Love Obituaries Elder Randy Myers ELDER W.R. “DICKIE” DANIELS June 18, 1933 – March 13, 2013 Elder Wesley Richard “Dickie” Daniels, Jr., died on March 13, 2013 after declining health for some time. He was born in Luling, Texas June 18, 1933. He is the eldest of four children born to W. R. and Ruby (Berry) Daniels. He graduated from Luling High School in 1951. His secular education also include Durham’s Business School and Devry’s Technical Institute. He joined Bethel Primitive Church and was baptized by Elder S. A. Nite in August 1951. He was married to Crystal Edna Johnson of Moulton, Page 7 Texas the 4th of June 1954. To their union one daughter and three sons were born. In 1956 Elder Daniels felt the call to preach and in 1957 began to speak publicly in the name of the Lord. Elder Daniels was ordained by Bethel Primitive Baptist Church of McMahan, Texas in October 1959. He served Bethel Church for 28 years (Feb 1960 to Feb 1988.) In addition to the Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, Elder Daniels also pastored congregations in Florence, Quemado, Austin, Gonzales, and Nixon, Texas during this period. He served as moderator of the Southwest Texas Association from July 1969 to July 1975. After resigning the care of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in February 1988, Elder Daniels interest was turned to his home community of Luling, Texas. He continued to labor in the Lord’s vineyard as he felt he was led until his passing. In recent years, many of us had not seen Elder Daniels but there was a day when you counted it a great blessing to be in the congregation when he was given grace to preach God’s word in power and demonstration of the Holy Spirit. He had a special gift and always said he “wanted to be preaching” when the Lord returned. He didn’t get that honor, but he did meet the Master Preacher in Heaven’s immortal glory and is in the presence of our Lord this very day. Page 8 The Banner of Love April 2013 April 2013 The Banner of Love Georgia Prosecutor balances job with pastoral duties Elder John Melvin is pastor of the Camp Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Lilburn, Georgia. He also serves as an assistant district attorney, shown here at his office at the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office in Marrietta, Georgia on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. By ANDRIA SIMMONS (EDITOR’S NOTE: the following is reprinted from the March 23, 2013 issue of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta, Georgia.) As a Baptist preacher, John Melvin is patient with sinners. As a prosecutor, he has earned a reputation for doggedly pursuing them. Over the past 18 years, Melvin has worked as a prosecutor in Gwinnett, DeKalb and Cobb counties and has become one of the state’s most experienced prosecutors of corrupt public figures. He has successfully prosecuted three former Recorder’s Court deputy clerks who were caught in a ticket-fixing scheme that cost the county millions in unpaid fines. And, he got convictions of two people who conspired with a former DeKalb Sheriff’s Office supervisor to pocket unclaimed bond money. In still unresolved cases, Melvin oversaw the special-purpose grand jury that investigated possible corruption in DeKalb County water and sewer department contracts. The grand jury’s probe was completed early this year, but its final report and presentment remains under seal. Earlier he led the investigation of a former DeKalb County Public Schools Superintendent, its one-time chief operating officer and the COO’s husband who have been indicted for allegedly mismanaging more than $80 million in taxpayer money. They are awaiting trial and have pleaded not guilty. It helps for anyone in charge of a public integrity unit to be above reproach themselves. Fortunately enough, Melvin’s image is so squeaky-clean that District Attorney Robert James has described him as a “Boy Scout.” His politeness would make any Southern mother beam with pride. Melvin jokes that he can’t even address his own daughters without calling them ma’am, because “I’m a Southerner, mama beat me and I went to West Point.” “So it’s the perfect storm for politeness,” he laughed. Not only that, Melvin has spent the last 15 years pastoring a congregation of about 75 souls at Camp Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Lilburn, Georgia. Like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, the worship services are held in a small, white country church where the congregation sits in maplewood pews and sings without instrumental accompaniment from an old-timey hymnal. At a Sunday service last week, he preached on the Gospel of Mark and described John the Baptist as a “bug-eating, honey-licking, weirddressed man in the wilderness” who came to prepare the way for Jesus. Being a prosecutor isn’t that different from being a pastor in some ways, Melvin says. But instead of teaching a congregation about the Bible, he instructs juries on Georgia law. In both cases, his job is to help them understand how the precepts apply to real life. Melvin is considered especially adept at handling criminal enterprise conspiracies using the RICO (Racketeering Influenced Corrupt Organization) law. Such cases usually involve bribery, kickback and coverup schemes concocted by white collar criminals, said Don Geary, his close friend and the chief assistant District Attorney for Cobb County. Geary said Melvin has advised other attorneys on RICO cases from California to New York, and he teaches the law to at the annual training seminar for new prosecutors in Georgia. “He sees how smart ones get away,” Geary said. “He recognizes and uses the tools that prevent that, and RICO is a good one.” Melvin said he’s not sure why he gravitated toward prosecuting people in a position of public trust, but it may have something to do with his undergraduate studies at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. There, he was taught that “duty, honor and country” come first. As 6-foot-3-inch-tall, athletic sophomore student at the academy, Melvin was planning a career in Special Forces until he suffered a brain aneurysm while jogging in a remote part of the expansive New York campus and nearly died. After a 13-hour emergency surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., Melvin woke two weeks later with no memory of what happened. A stranger peered back at him from the mirror. His head was shaved and scarred, and he was gaunt from having lost weight. It was soon apparent that returning to West Point was out of the question, because doctors barred him from participating in any rigorous physical activities that might jar his head for two years. But Melvin saw other soldiers undergoing treatment at Walter Reed who had fared far worse, and that helped him put things in perspective. “I felt that God gave me back my life for a reason,” Melvin said. The DeKalb native returned home to finish out his undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia. And after graduating from law school at Ohio Northern University, he got his first attorney job in the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office. He spent 11 years locking up lawbreakers in Gwinnett before leaving in 2006 to take a higher-paying job with more responsibility with thenDeKalb County District Attorney Gwendolyn Keyes Fleming. Then in January, Melvin and close friend Geary, who had been the No. 3 employee in the DeKalb DA’s office, left together to take a job with the newly elected Cobb County District Attorney, Vic Reynolds. The move will allow Melvin, a husband and father of four, to spend more quality time with his family. Reynolds has said Melvin will handle any public corruption cases that arise going forward, along with white collar crimes and other specialized prosecutions. Melvin is currently handling the prosecution of Sgt. Alvin Sutherland of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, who is accused of sexually assaulting a female inmate. He is also steering the case against Cobb EMC chief Dwight Brown, who is charged with stealing millions from the electric membership cooperative and making false statements to customers, according to his indictment. Even former foes like defense attorney Tony Axum, who represents Reid in the DeKalb schools case, say Melvin is a worthy opponent. “Defense lawyers would prefer it if we were up against lawyers who are not smart and not zealous and do not understand what they’re doing,” Axum said. “That’s an advantage if you’re a defense lawyer. I have no advantages when John Melvin is on the other side.” Page 9
