What you do for
fun if you have to
much money!
From Your Commodore
Ahoy Crew,
Is time flying or what? The days are getting shorter again. Reminding me that
summer is starting it's fading cycle. It just makes me want to go sailing more before
the water level sends me home and down stream to the tidal waters of the San
Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. With all that in mind some of the highlights
from this summer so far have been an excellent regatta and near record numbers
for the event. We will have the final tally pretty soon. Heres a couple of photos from
the BBQ that didn't make it in the last newsletter. What a turnout!

It's been a great summer of sailing between Scotts Flat and the S.F. Bay. It's funny
that we do both just to cool down! Scotts Flat for a sail and swim. San Francisco
Bay for the complete chill out. This season has had some good breezes on the lake
along with the usual flukyness - but hey you're on the water and that's what counts.
We made one of the Beer & Wine races - had a great time. The time is the part we're
all lacking. I wish we could make them all! Sounds like maybe I should have some
cheese with that wine, but hey I'm a beer drinker. While we were out last Sunday the
racers were doing their thing so we had a good chance to get a photo op!

What you do for fun if you have too much money!
On a SF Bay trip aboard Gypsy Soul a couple of weeks ago Danny and I had quite a
sail.
With the summer winds blowing 25kts. and gusting even higher it wasn't long before
we were setting the second reef for the very first time aboard the Gypsy Soul. I'd been
telling Danny and Marilyn all year we need to go sailing when the wind is really
blowing. Once we got her reefed down the helm balanced out nicely and Danny said
that he knew now why I was always talking about getting good at reefing the boat. OK
so now the wind is blowing! Now you need to do it in the dark on a rocking and rolling
deck while being dead tired. Hey wait a minute I thought this was supposed to be fun.
While on our lap around the bay we saw what you do for fun if you have too much
money (picture below)
Danny getting in the groove aboard Gypsy Soul. Are we having fun yet? You
bet!

From The Commodore (cont'd)
Well back to reality! Bismark's case is going to trial and he needs our prayers and any help he
can get. The board has discussed doing a fund-raiser to help Bismark out and it would be the
least we could do for one of our own members. I'm asking everyone to give it some thought and we'll
talk about it at the next general meeting. You can send your donations to Bismark by check made
out to: Bismark Dinius (write Bismark Dinius Defense Fund in the memo) and send it to:
Sierra Central Credit Union
306 N. Sunrise Ave.
Roseville, CA 95661
Attn: Brian Foxworthy, Branch Manager
You can also send your donations through Pay Pal. Bismark's Pay Pal ID is:
[email protected]
Other news is that someone has (I'd like to think) borrowed two battery chargers from the shed
one belonging to the club, the other belonging to Jerry Lewis - we need those returned. Also
members using the dinghy dock need to keep a close eye on the water level and keep letting it
out so we don't get stuck high and dry. We are planning another work party for a clean up day
toward the end of the season so we'll talk about that and be looking for volunteers at the next
meeting.

Seaworthy Extra: The trial of Bismark Dinius
Many Seaworthy readers have asked about Bismark Dinius, who was charged with manslaughter after the
sailboat he was steering was run down by a performance boat driven by a deputy sheriff one night on
California's Clear Lake ("A Strange Case of Justice," Seaworthy, October, 2008). The trial is now underway
and the two links below are posting updates. With either link, the quickest way to access articles is to do a
Search with the name Bismark Dinius. The first link is for a television station, KGO in San Francisco. The
second link is for the Record-Bee, a local newspaper in Clear Lake County. http://abclocal.go.com/kgo
http://www.record-bee.com Note: The original manslaughter charge was recently changed to Boating Under
the Influence. While this may seem like good news, the two charges have almost identical potential jail
terms - four years vs. three years. You can assist his legal defense by sending a check made out to Bismark
Dinius, writing "Bismark Dinius Defense Fund" in the memo section, and mailing it to Sierra Central Credit
Union, Attn: Brian Foxworthy, Branch Manager, 306 N. Sunrise Ave., Roseville, CA 95661.

Friendship Club Day
This picture tells the whole story about Friendship Club Day
2009! We had a very small group of girls from the Friendship
Club this year, but that definitely did not reduce the amount of
fun we had. Thanks to Jerry Grant, Jerry Lewis, Scott &
Debbie Mack, David Niedziejko, Howard & Donna Hendrich,
Hugh & Nicki Talman and of course, my husband, Wayne, we
had more than enough boats and skippers (and water guns!) to
make it a really nice day for everyone. The girls really seemed
to enjoy getting to drive the boats and playing like bow
ornaments. Some of them even played like fish on the end of
a line! The wind and weather cooperated and we had an absolutely picture-perfect day. The
National Women’s Sailing Association sent plenty of tee-shirts and fanny packs to take home and
GCYC provided our specialty – a hot dog lunch - for all the skippers and girls. Thank you to all of
you who took time out from your busy schedules to help out with this special day!
