The 2013 Surrey Santa Parade here in Cloverdale continues to be one of the bright
spots of the dark month of December. A record number of parade entrants have made
this one of B.C’s largest evening parades.
The City of Surrey along with a number of
local sponsors came to the organizer’s aid
to cover increased costs for this amazing
event. The parade is attracting a number
of entrants from the Cloverdale
Rodeo Parade which
means there was more horses and country
themed entries. The front portion of the parade travels across Surrey to attend another
event in City Centre at Holland Park as part
of a city wide initiative to raise funds for
the Surrey Food Bank and Surrey Christmas Bureau.

Part 1: Healthy Holiday Detox

Christmas and New Years is a beautiful time
of year. Many are blessed with a busy schedule of visiting family and relatives, and, of
course, all the goodies that come along with
it. And that is the problem. We end up overindulging in tasty treats, fatty meals, and alcoholic spirits. It is too late to look back on
our yummy sins now, so let’s focus on how
to minimize the toxic effects of festive holiday meals through proper detoxification and
recovery. (Part 1 of our article will look at
detoxification, and Part 2 will focus on recovery.) Let’s get rejuvenated for the New Year!
In terms of detoxification, we can liken your
body to your home, both of which require a
systematic method of cleaning. We need to
start small and begin at the cellular level (ie.
the rooms in your house), then allow the liver
and kidneys to detox the “waste” (much like
placing things into the garbage disposal or
putting your recycling outside for the next
day). Finally, all that junk has to be eliminated from your body via your bowels, skin,
and urinary system (just like waste being
taken away in the sewage system, or by the
garbage truck).
Although your body’s main detoxification organs are the liver, kidneys, lymphatics, and
your skin, many other organs could also be at
risk of damage from prolonged exposure to
poor diets and sedentary living. For example,
the digestive system could lose its ability to
process food properly if you have a diet high
in fats, sugars, and processed foods, and low
in fiber and veggies; not only are the nutrients
not being properly digested and absorbed, but
movement within the bowels could become
stagnant which allows toxins to accumulate
within the digestive tract. These toxins can
directly harm the organ they accumulate in,
and could culminate in symptoms such as fatigue, skin issues, cloudy thinking, and mood
changes. Thus, it is important to address all
of these organs in your detoxification process,
and then maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle
thereafter.

COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR
Sat. February 22 is very close to the time of
the year when Canada is at its coldest (on
average). For us on the West Coast it might
be our rainiest. Organized across Canada on
this day, is a national fundraising effort to
raise awareness around homelessness and
to raise funds for a local non-profit organization that addresses the needs of the homeless and the near to homeless. You can learn
a lot about it online: www.coldestnightoftheyear.org. Last year, 8000 walkers willing to brave the toughest weather Canada
could muster raised $1,636,379 for different
charities across Canada. This year Pacific is
hosting a Cloverdale walk to raise funds to
help the Community Kitchen reach its capacity to serve the needs in our community.
There are three distances, 10km, 5km, or
2km, that will take you through the downtown streets of Cloverdale. The two kilometer walk works great for families who
want to involve their children. The walk is
designed to give each walker an opportunity to experience the chillier outdoors as a
homeless person might experience, at least
on that given night. On the front end, they
will be recruiting enthusiastic team leaders
who will rally eight or ten friends, family,
or coworkers that will team together to raise
funds by walking together. You can register
as a team leader by simply going to the Coldest Night of the Year website and signing up.

KITCHEN
The “CNOY” walk will also mark the grand
opening of the Cloverdale Community
Kitchen on Feb. 22nd. The RCMP, Cloverdale BIA and the Cloverdale Chamber will
be involved, along with some local dignitaries, to mark the presence and opening of
a kitchen that will be part of Cloverdale’s
effort to be among many good things, a caring community. The dream for this kitchen
emerged when Bill Reid, the former president of the Cloverdale Chamber and the
RCMP District Sergeant Dave Woods asked
Pacific to host meals to the homeless in 2011.
The request arose because Cloverdale’s previous kitchen ended with the demolishment
of the old Safeway Mall. As the program established, it was apparent that their existing
kitchen was inadequate and that what was
started could not be sustained. They organized a fund raising campaign that raised
over $400,000 in money, equipment, and
donated labour. They are organizing a Grand
Opening to coincide with the Coldest Night

to
raise
$30,000
or more to
invest in
the operation of the
community kitchen. For this kitchen to flourish,
they believe they need to hire a dedicated
cook and community entrepreneur who can
develop the kitchen into a life-giving and
self-sustaining enterprise in our community. Already, they have a number of community partners engaged in the project who
oversee a number of weekly meals. Moreover, they are becoming more aware of the
growing need among seniors who are facing
increasing challenges, along with existing
concerns, youth homelessness, and single
parent families. They believe that a combination of dedicated staffing, Pacific Community’s resources, and generous community resources can create a self-sustaining
model where food programs, food training,
and community programming can flourish beyond what they have started. Come

Judges decide the facts based on evidence
put before them, and then apply the law.
Here is a fact pattern. How would you decide who was at fault? Fact patterns similar
to this one are often presented in court and
assessed by Judges. Test your judgment!…
Undoting Dorothy lived to the age of 98
and, shortly before her death, prepared a
will that left nothing to her only son, Betrayed Bruce. Rather, she left her entire estate to her neighbours of 40 years, whom
she described as “my good friends over
many years.” She claimed, in her will, that
she did not leave Bruce anything because
Bruce did not visit her, and that he did not
need the money – he was retired, having
made “good money as a logger”.
Bruce had another story to tell. He told the
court that his mother had been bitter with
him since he was born, blaming his birth
for forcing her into an unhappy marriage.
She often described him as an illegitimate
child (in crasser terms), and he was primar-
ily raised (to the age of about 12) by his
grandparents. Bruce was in fact not well off,
and lived on a modest pension in a mobile
home in Quesnel, with very little in the way
of assets. Further, he gave evidence that he
had tried to maintain regular contact with
his mother, and only stopped doing so in the

him unfairly in her will, and asked the court
to vary the will under the Wills Variation
Act, so that he also would receive a portion
of her estate (which was relatively small,
about $165,000 – before the legal wranglings began).

Court of Canada decision that a parent has
a moral obligation to make provision for
their children, based on “society’s reasonable expectations of what a judicious parent
would do in the circumstances, by reference
to contemporary community standards”. In
this case, Dorothy had been primarily responsible for the hostility and resentment
between them, even if Bruce did at times reciprocate. She had held him responsible for
something that was beyond his control, and
made her decision to disinherit him based
on factually incorrect notions. The court felt
that she had not fulfilled her moral obligations, and stepped in to vary the will.

expeirience road rage, will give you an
invaluable advantage in case you ever

dashboard camera is the video resolution it is capable of. While there
are some cheap camera models
$20 - $50 (640×480), you won’t be
able to make out a whole lot of detail.
For decent results you should get a
camera that supports at least
720p resolution (1280×720
pixels, also known as HD).
$60 - $100.
However, if you prefer top
quality video to be able to
keep track of all the details
a 1080p camera or full HD. $100 and up
and some even have two cameras, one that
records what is happening in front of you
and one for behind you. Most dashboard
cameras with a resolution of 720p or above
have decent video quality during the day.
But capturing good quality video at night is
what separates them. True night vision isn’t
necessary for a dash cam as you will have
your headlights on. Choose a camera that
is able to capture quality video after dark if
you drive a lot at night.
An absolute must in a dashboard camera is
the ability to loop. Loop recording means
that once your storage is full, the camera
automatically overwrites the oldest files
on the memory card, thus enabling it to record indefinitely. Other features to look for:
G-sensor, files are automatically marked
whenever an impact is detected. Auto on/
off, Another must have. Camera automatically starts recording when you turn the ignition key.
Parking mode, your camera comes on and
starts recording, so you can see who hit
your car. Date and time stamp.

Feeling Cooped Up?
Now that winter has set in and we have a
couple more months of it, you may find yourself feeling cooped up, stressed and wanting
a bit of a change. Money is tight for most of
us so doing major renovations right now is

staying indoors a lot more

First walk around your
home and make a list of all
the things you would like to
change. From something as
simple as removing clutter,
to changing a wall plug,
to the bigger changes like,
changing the vanity in the bathroom, write
them all down. If your like most of us you’ll
have a fairly long list. Once you’ve got your
list, look at your finances and see how much
you can comfortably afford to spend on your
home. If money is really tight, like it is in
my house, don’t dispare, take on the projects
that don’t cost much money, you are still
making improvements. Even if it is just decluttering, you’ll feel better and you’ll have
acomplished something that makes life just
a bit better. Keep your list though, because
when you do get a little extra cash you can
tackle the next project.
The same goes for those
of you who have a litte
cash to invest in your
home. Look at your list
and see what projects will
give you the biggest bang
for your sanity. For some
it may be replacing your
bathroom sink and faucets
to a more stylish look, this is a fairly simple
task with basic tools even if you are only a
little handy. The change may not be high on
the wow factor scale, but it can be a definate
improvement over what you have. Check
around for sales, all the home improvement
