Dear Readers,
As the year draws to a close, there is no better time to reflect and look forward to new
beginnings. With festivals and two new library openings, 2014 has been a big year for us,
and we are ending it off with some of your favourite programmes.
Fans of our arts programmes can look forward to the round-up of our ‘best of’ co-creation
programmes. Ranging from Manga Drawing and Film Making, immerse in a new art form to
create your unique piece of art at the end of the sessions. Turn to page 4 for the full listings.
If you enjoyed our Read! Fest programmes earlier this year, you will enjoy our December edition
of the SG Author Series, which also celebrates Singapore literature. Back by popular demand,
A.J. Low, the husband-and-wife writing team behind the popular Sherlock Sam series, will take
you on a Literary Trail: In Search of the Missing Heirloom in Katong. Budding young writers
– or sleuths – can also pen their own adventure stories in Write What You Know… Sleuths and
Suspects!, with the help of Sherlock Sam and A.J. Low. More details are available on page 12.
With Singapore’s big jubilee next year, there is no better time to revisit our past. Look through
the lens of time in the 1st Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition 2014 – Traveling
Showcase. Presented by the Singapore Film Society, the showcase brings together a selection
of home-grown short films that ruminate on our shared culture and community.
Flip to page 15 for the list of short films. Roving exhibition Lokal Heroes also pays tribute to the
underappreciated but familiar characters of our social landscape by casting them as figurines.
Find out more on page 18.
On this note, how many books have you managed to read this year? If your answer is “not
enough”, our many resident reading clubs at our libraries island-wide might just aid in your
catch-up. Join the monthly sessions of reading groups, such as Pseudo Book Club for young
adults, or FUNdaMENTALs reading club for those looking to improve their English language
skills, or Heartlands Bookclub to not only find out books that you might have missed out on
but also meet like-minded reading buddies. Check out the full list of reading clubs on pages
9 to 11.
As we journey into the new year together, have a merry Christmas!

Irfan Kasban is a freelance theatre practitioner
and former Associate Artistic Director of Teater

(Trilogy of Islam-inspired plays at M1 Fringe
Festival 2012), TAHAN (Teater Ekamatra, Main
Season 2013) and the site-specific works ‘This
Placement’ (2012) and ‘A Beautiful Chance
Encounter of a Sewing Machine and an
Umbrella on an Operating Table’ (2014). Of
Indian, Chinese, Arab and Javanese descent,
Irfan enjoys delving in performance art and
takes pleasure in proving people wrong.
IRFAN KASBAN
My bookshelf is...
not strong enough for the
gravity of the books I have. So
I pile my books on top of other
books (and sometimes under
dust) on, and around my bed;
I actually sleep with them, and
I dream about them.
I have...
73 books. (I wrote prose for
two of these books, in Malay,
for which I got a C6 in my ‘O’
Levels.)
My top three picks are...
Immortality
- Milan Kundera
Milan Kundera is perhaps
best known for Unbearable
Lightness of Being but I read
Immortality first and fell in
love with it instantly. Every
line hits me like recognising
the wave or a gesture of a
childhood friend. Oh, the way
he describes that feeling of
being half awake and half
asleep in Part 1, Chapter 2.
08
Such a succinct and beautiful
text, with very well drawn
out characters. It is however,
the seemingly understated
anecdotes that I find most
entertaining. To quote
Kundera — “The purpose
of poetry is not to dazzle us
with an astonishing thought,
but to make one moment
of existence unforgettable
and worthy of unbearable
nostalgia.”
Invisible Cities
- Italo Calvino
”You take delight not in a city’s
seven or seventy wonders,
but in the answer it gives to a
question of yours.” — Alfian
Sa’at, local writer, esteemed
playwright, and dear friend,
recommended this book to
me. I have a short attention
span and thus, this is one
of my favourite books. The
images Calvino creates are
astounding. Reading is truly
seeing and in this book, one
cannot help but expand
the vast landscapes of his
DECEMBER 2014 // www.nlb.gov.sg/golibrary
own mind. A great book to
re-read over and over again,
especially when travelling.
55 cities, and conversations
between Kublai Khan and
Marco Polo – this book is a first
class ticket around the world.
Hard-boiled Wonderland and
the End of the World
- Haruki Murakami
Surrealism at its best. Who
would’ve thought paper clips
could be so powerful? And
if you do not have an INKling
of what I am saying, go read
this thriller of sorts. Please put
down Kafka on the Shore, and
pick up this two-in-one book
(or is it?) and make sure your
shadow is still attached to
you..
My guilty pleasure read
is...
The Missing Piece by Shel
Silverstein. Simply heartbreaking. It’s a guilty pleasure read
because I like to cry and every
time I read it, I cry a little inside!

Heartlands Bookclub discusses
Amy Tan’s novel “The Joy Luck Club”
5.00 pm – 6.30 pm
Activity Room, Bukit Batok Public Library
“The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan (Call No.:
TAN) centres around four mothers, four
daughters, four families whose histories
shift with the four winds depending on who’s
“saying” the stories. In 1949 four Chinese
women, recent immigrants to San Francisco,
begin meeting to eat dim sum, play mahjong,
and talk. United in shared unspeakable loss
and hope, they call themselves the Joy Luck
Club. Rather than sink into tragedy, they
choose to gather to raise their spirits
and money.
With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan examines
the sometimes painful, often tender, and
always deep connection between mothers
and daughters. As each woman reveals her
secrets, trying to unravel the truth about her
life, the strings become more tangled, more
entwined. Tan is an astute storyteller, enticing
readers to immerse themselves into these lives
of complexity and mystery.

In creating a group where writers are
encouraged to give and receive feedback on
their work, the Writers’ Group aims to give

her adult life. She has bought books, sold books, marketed
books and now she is trying her hand at writing books. She
loves to nap and eat chocolate. She spends most of her
free time reading, and, when she can afford it, she travels,
usually to look for beautiful bookstores around the world.
Authors Adan Jimenez and Felicia Low will be
sharing about their book Sherlock Sam and the
Missing Heirloom in Katong and bringing you to
some of the places mentioned in the book! So
join us as we take a trip down Katong and explore
some of the hidden gems.

The Children Act
BOOK
REVIEW
he custody battle between the Bernsteins,
who belong to the Chareidi community, was
the first of two cases fed into the novel to whet
the reader’s appetite for heart-wrenching decisions
which may have no right or wrong. The parents were
fighting for the care and control of their daughters,
Rachel and Nora. The Chareidi community is a strong
and unified community that provides tremendous
support for members of the community. They are
close-knit and have been sofor ages. The problem –
if one sees it as a problem – is that ‘Chareidi women
were expected to devote themselves to making a
“secure home” and that education past sixteen was
not relevant.’ Julian Bernstein, the father, produced
evidence to show that his wife, Judith, was a selfish
person who cannot control her temper. Judith
testified that it was her parents-in-law who refused
to let her see her own children. They accused her
of snatching her children away from a warm and
familiar environment, ‘whose identity was clear, its
methods proven through the generations, and whose
members were generally happier and more fulfilled
than those of the secular consumerist world outside
– a world that mocked the spiritual life and whose
mass culture denigrated girls and women.’
T
But secularists have strong arguments too – ‘nothing
denigrated a person, boy or girl, more than the denial
of a decent education and the dignity of proper
work’. How was the judge, Justice Fiona Maye, to
decide? Justice Maye was from the consumerist
secular world. Can she understand the beliefs of
those who believe? They probably do not think so.
Justice required Justice Maye to decide in the best
interests of the children, but which of the competing
ideologies is right?
Even as she struggled with the Bernstein case,
another case came to her urgent attention. A pair of
twins were born to a devout Catholic woman were
conjoined and the twins have separate bodies but
shared a bladder. Named after Matthew and Mark,
Mathew had a malformed brain and would not
likely survive, but conjoined with Mark, he fed off
his brother like a parasite. Mark having to feed and
nourish two bodies grew thin and weak. Matthew the
comatose one grew fat and idle. Eventually, he would
die because of his damaged brain and would take

Mark with him. The doctors have to separate them to
save Mark who had the better chance of living and
leading a normal life. But Catholics believe that life
was God-given and one cannot take away Matthew’s
life even to save Mark. Secular judges can remind
parties – and themselves – that the court is a court
of law and not of morals, but they can, when they
think fit, declare law is not law unless it is based on
morals. Who is to judge which vein is gold and which
is dust?
The most troublesome case that Justice Maye had to
decide concerned yet another religious prohibition.
Adam Henry was a young, intelligent and sensitive
boy a few weeks shy of his eighteenth birthday when
he was struck down by leukaemia. He was under
treatment and would likely recover but the treatment
caused him to be severely anaemic. A massive blood
transfusion would be required, and once that has
taken place, the doctors believed that he would have
a 90% chance of full recovery. But he comes from a
family of Jehovah’s Witnesses. They believe that the
body is the temple of God and must be kept holy.
It must not be tainted by the blood of others.
McEwan produces a scintillating courtroom scene
with powerful arguments from lawyers for both
sides. This case was not so clear cut. If Adam were
eighteen, he could decide for himself and if he had
refused, the court would not stand in his way. How
did Justice Maye approach this case? McEwan
conjured a set of circumstances and some dramatic
effort by Justice Maye in her dialogue with Adam.
The tale spins along with a couple of twists that
made for a dramatic and melancholic ending.
Throughout the term when the court is in session,
judges like Justice Fiona Maye listen attentively to
the evidence of tremendously emotional cases, and
then let their quiet rational mind analyse the evidence
and probe for answers that will meet the law and
produce a just conclusion. But how would such
judges manage if they themselves are torn apart
internally by their own emotional problems –
such as a threat by their spouse to leave them?
The Alexandrian
The Impulse Society
Paul Roberts, 2014 Bloomsbury
Call No. English 306.30973 ROB
oberts begins with the story of Brett Walker,
a young man in his twenties who was so
addicted to the computer game called
World of Warcraft that after four years of living a life
enmeshed by the ‘virtuality’ of this game he lost his
sense of reality, his health, and his wealth. Roberts
goes on to describe the change in modern corporate
strategy from shareholder values to share values.
He attributes this to the change in our attitude from
the old way of thinking about long-term investments
to immediate (not just short-term) results. Such
immediacy has proven to be more gratifying than any
form of investment yield. Why has this state of affairs
come about?
R
If it was a human instinct to save, borne from time
immemorial when food and goods were scarce,
the age of digitalisation, advancing at the same
time as globalisation, has altered that instinct so
drastically that we are in danger of becoming the
opposite of savers. Yet in economic terms, this is
fine because we are not just consumers who are
essential for the economy, but we are also rational
consumers. Roberts traces the development of this
phenomenon through the creeping stranglehold of
big corporations, and later, of big corporations and,
later, of big corporations utilising big data. First, they
cut costs by cutting employees from the payroll;
then they invent products to cater to the needs of the
self-indulgent consumer. Low prices and abundance
leads to mindless consumerism.
At the micro level, the consumer has been blithely
using technology to spend without realising how
it is affecting his mind. Drawing on behavioural
experiments, Roberts shows how unaware we are
of what is being done to us. People who pay cash
at supermarkets are more likely to recall how much
they paid for their purchases than people who pay
by credit cards. The underlying ailment is worse.
This is just a signifier of the modern consumer’s
inability to defer gratification. The urge for instant
gratification cascades into all kinds of problems.
This urge comes from the ‘lizard’ or limbic part of
our brain as opposed to the rational part. In order to
combat the urge for instant gratification, we need to
have a similarly ‘strong counternarrative (donuts will
make us fat)’ with its own flash effect to compete with
BOOK
REVIEW
limbic impulses. The trouble is that we have difficulty
conjuring such visions from future prospects. What
may happen in the future is always bland and excites
a lower emotion than what happens in the present.
Technology that helps people find their ideal homes
and lifestyles may not be the blessing one might
assume it to be. To be able to find a community
that shares all of one’s preferences, including one’s
sexual orientation, may lead to the loss of social
cohesion. Expensive medical equipment leads to
greater costs and the inevitable rise in health care
costs because of increasing procedures, many of
which are probably unnecessary – ‘a sick patient is
worth more than a healthy one’.
Roberts also examines how immediate gratification
leads to a narcissism that destroys the community.
Everything is directed to the individual self as the
centre. All products are individualised to suit the
individual and not the community. The result is
that individuals become competitors rather than
members of the same community striving for the
common good. Conversely, and paradoxically,
society’s progress is measured by a growth in
economic terms that sees the Gross Domestic
Product index rising but wages stagnating. Roberts
quotes Joseph Stiglitz: ‘What you measure affects
what you do. If you don’t measure the right thing, you
don’t do the right thing.’ So how does one find the
true measure for the ideal society?
The answer, it seems, lies in the individual because
he has been targeted by technology innovators and
market-driven forces to isolate him, making him an
easy target. Vanity is the individual’s Achilles Heel.
He needs to find what Roberts call ‘the intermediate
institutions’ such as family, school and community to
protect him from the larger forces. Above all, Roberts
believes that ‘education may be the one most likely
to motivate individuals to become engaged and take
action’. Teaching as a profession has low economic
gains for the individual. But if we ask, ‘Who are we
expecting to do these jobs if it is not going to be
someone like me?’ we are stepping off the treadmill
of personalised gratification.

Humans of New York
Author: Brandon Stanton
Publisher: New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2013
Call No.: English 974.700222 STA
If you are an aspiring photographer, Humans of New York is one
book not to miss. A project by photographer Brandon Stanton to
capture pictures and life experiences of New Yorkers, what began as
a photography blog and grew into a Facebook page with ten million likes to date is now
available in book form as well.
The book features four hundred of Stanton’s most striking photographs, showcasing
various personalities from the Big Apple. Some intriguing subjects to look out for include:
a Yugoslavian janitor who studied for twelve years to obtain a degree in Classics,
and Banana George, the world’s oldest barefoot water-skier, who, sadly, is wheelchairbound today.
While many other photo-essays of New York tend to highlight the urban landscape or
homelessness in the city, Stanton’s optimistic portrayal of its residents shines through
his collection. The book offers readers a reading and viewing experience that is
pleasurable and inspiring, even for those not attuned to photography.

Change One Thing! Make One Change and Embrace
a Happier, More Successful You.
Author: Sue Hadfield
E-book
Sometimes all you need is that little push to remind yourself that
happiness is not a destination, but a journey. Sue Hadfield’s self-help
book ‘Change One Thing!’ offers readers the chance to change, by
taking that one step to a happier you. While the book is based on
results from a survey done on adults in Britain, the tips given are still
applicable to every working adult in this vastly changing world we live in today.
Read about simple empowering steps such as living in the moment, preventing regrets
by acting now, as well as how to go about keeping your dreams alive. Even if you only
have a few minutes to spare, you can flip to a section of the book for that small dose of
respite. As the author says, the first step is easy; all you have to do is change one thing!

The Collected Works of A.J. Fikry
Author: Gabrielle Zevin
Publisher: London: Little, Brown and Company, 2014
Call No.: English ZEV
A.J. Fikry, the owner of a bookstore at Alice Island is not exactly
your friendly neighbourhood bookseller. After losing his wife to a car
accident, his life spiralled down only to have it unexpectedly turned
with the arrival of an unexpected “package” – Maya, a 2-year-old girl
abandoned by her mother at the bookstore. This simple but touching story of love, grief,
families and friendship does not need a twist of drama to highlight everyday moments
that are comforting, humorous, emotional yet realistic. The reference to literary works
in the story is cleverly presented through the characters and it serves not only as a
celebration of stories and literature but an affirmation of how books have a way of
speaking to us and touching our lives. This is one book which you cannot help but to reread and to re-live the moments and feel the emotions all over again.

My Kampong Sketches
Author: Ishak Bin Ahamad
Publisher: Math Paper Press by BooksActually, 2013
Call No.: SING 743.8995957 ISH
In this age of digital photography, a simple click of the camera is all it takes to capture
the scenes and places that we like and want to remember. But memories can also be
preserved as drawings, as shown in this personal caricaturistic recollection by Ishak
Ahamad.
Seen through the eyes of a young Ishak, readers are invited to reminisce the good old
kampong days – from his colourful neighbours like the opium-smoking fishmonger and
the Sikh ‘bai roti’ man who sells the best kaya toast in town; to the kampong pastimes of
catching geckos and spiders and playing ‘water polo’ in the flooded canals after a heavy
downpour.
For the nostalgic, this book is a reminder of the simple, close-knit kampong life that
many of us miss, but for the children of today and future generations, this book is a
treasure trove of our Singapore heritage.

Everyday Basics for a Better Back
Publisher: [Sydney, N.S.W.] : Australian Broadcasting Corporation ;

Call No.: AV English 613.71 EVE -[HEA]
Most of us do these activities unconsciously everyday: standing, walking,
sitting and sleeping. But do we do them correctly in terms of posture?
Let Anna-Louise Bouvier, one of Australia’s top physiotherapists, guide
you to the right postures and prevent or relieve pains such as backaches
and muscles spasms. For example: do not cross your legs when sitting
as this is poor posture; instead, sit with both legs on the ground and balance bones in
your bottom.
Recommended exercises are shown to make your body flexible and relaxed. Bouvier
advises consulting your physiotherapy or doctor if you have any pain or before doing any of
the stretching exercises shown in the video.
Get the basics right for a better back.

The Human Experience
Publisher: [Brooklyn, NY: Grassroots Films : Distributed by Docurama Films, [2011]
Call No.: Adult AV 170 HUM
This is an award-winning documentary about a young man and his brother
who went beyond their comfort zones to seek the meaning of life.
The two men’s quest for answers began in New York City where the duo
discovered what it was like to be homeless and living on the streets. An invitation to visit an
orphanage of abandoned children in Peru as well as the AIDs community and Leper colony
in Ghana rounded off the three documented journeys of the brothers, along with their friends.
While the 90-minute documentary may not point towards a single direct answer to the
meaning of life, it does however reveal the wisdom of both professionals and seemingly
ordinary human beings these men meet in their travels. It would have been fitting if all
involved gave their personal interpretations but the onus is on the viewers to search within,
reflect upon and answer the various questions posed in the documentary, including
‘Who am I?’, ‘How did I get here?’ and ‘What am I supposed to do?’, amongst others.
A documentary after your own heart, it showcases hope and joy despite the hardships faced
and provides a learning discourse, as we question ourselves as to where we stand
as individuals.

Mystery of Easter Island
Publisher: [United States]: PBS, 2013.
Call No.: English AV 996.18 MYS
Mystery of Easter Island is an hour-long video about the Rapa Nui
people and the statues that they carved on Easter Island centuries
ago. These statues, which are called Moai, have mystified the world for
hundreds of years. They were carved out of soft volcanic bedrock, and
transported to rock platforms without the use of high-end technology
despite their heaviness. Naturally, the mystery of how this was done became an intriguing
enigma for modern day researchers to solve. The video is an inspiring account of how far
a group of people with an interest in this topic will go to test out an unlikely theory that is
based on an oral tradition, which is that the Moai literally walked to their final destination.
Borrow it to see how the Moai walks.
