William J Stewart was born in 1946 in Belfast, Northern
Ireland, the eldest of eight children. He developed an
interest in photography from an early age. As a child heading
off to spend the summer learning to speak Gaeilge in the
Gaeltachs of Donegal he somehow acquired a Kodak Brownie
127 camera and a roll of film. Upon showing his photographs
to his family on his return, his father wanted to know why he
was taking photographs of lonely mountain roads and sheep
and the like instead of “taking snaps of your chums”. Some
years later he purchased a Pratkica camera and eventually
during his years as a student at The Queen’s University
of Belfast, he purchased a Nikkormat camera and a 50mm
f1.4 Nikkor lens, which he still possesses today. It was with
this camera and lens that several of the photographs in this
exhibition were taken. He favored 125 ASA film, generally
either Ilford FP4 or Kodak Plus X, developed in Acutol. The
negatives were recently retrieved from a dusty old folder,
digitized using an Epson Perfection V500 scanner and then
cleaned up using Photoshop CS4. Today he has a Nikon D700
and several Nikkor lens; he has completely moved from film
to digital photography. Although he still prefers to work
in black and white, he also has begun to dabble in color,
as witnessed by the selection of color photographs in this
exhibition.
All the photographs in this exhibition are printed on Epson
Hot Press Natural fine art paper using an Epson Stylus Pro
3880 printer.
