T
his is an exciting time for Inland Hospital and
EMHS (Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems).
We are poised to continue to demonstrate our
ongoing commitment to the healthcare of all in the
greater Waterville area. Here are just a few examples
of how you, our patients and community partners,
always come first at Inland:
• Inland was selected as a Top Rural Hospital in
America by the Leapfrog Group for excellence in
patient safety, quality and resource utilization.
• We are participating with EMHS in a national
accountable care organization pilot to demonstrate
the value of more coordinated care for our
Medicare patients. Our primary care offices and
care coordination teams are helping patients with
chronic diseases like diabetes and congestive heart
failure to live healthier, more productive lives.
• Through the comprehensive use of electronic
medical records we are making care safer, more
efficient, and more coordinated.
• Our renovation project currently underway will
provide expanded access to private rooms and
create a state-of-the-art care environment that
allows nurses to spend more time at the bedside.
A n d mor e…
Inland is more than your community hospital.
•W

care services and specialists of EMMC (Eastern
Maine Medical Center).
Caring for and serving our community is our mission;
putting you first in all we do is our promise. Thank you
for your trust in us!
• We launched the Let’s Go!
Family Fun Series to encourage
active, healthy families, and we
provided financial and volunteer
support of local quality-oflife initiatives with dozens of
community partners.

A
t Inland Hospital, we consider it a priority and a privilege to contribute in many different ways
to the health and well-being of the communities we serve. We look for opportunities to
collaborate on community-building efforts to include health, economic, educational, and cultural
endeavors. Here is a glance at some of our community efforts and successful partnerships
during the last year.
Inland Fights Childhood Obesity
Inland and EMHS support a nationally recognized program
LET’s GO! promotes these
daily healthy habits:
founded in Maine called “Let’s Go!” as a proven solution
to help combat the childhood obesity epidemic. In 2012,
Inland Hospital strengthened its commitment to help
children and their families lead a healthy lifestyle:
• Six of Inland’s hospital-owned family practices
implemented the Let’s Go! program, using tools and resources to help
families eat healthy and be physically active.
• Our Community Benefit program supported numerous schools
and local organizations that promoted the program’s 5-2-1-0 healthy
lifestyle messages, and made policy and environmental changes that
have a lasting impact.
• Nearly 500 people attended our first annual
Family
FU N
Series
Let’s Go! Family Fun Day in September.
The event kicked off a year-long Let’s Go!
PASSPORT
Family Fun Series of activities that
encourage healthy eating and enjoying
active fun together. Inland partnered with
Waterville Parks & Recreation, the Alfond
Youth Center, and many others to bring
the Family Fun Series to our community. Let’s Go!
Passports and calendar of events are available at inlandhospital.org.

Inland partnered
with other organizations to
bring Cooking Matters classes
to people of all ages, helping
Women’s Health

them learn how to select
and prepare healthy
meals on a budget.
Women’s health services continue to
grow at Inland and our commitment
to preventive health has never
been stronger! Our 15th annual
World of Women’s Wellness health
fair at Thomas College in April 2012
welcomed 600 women to better
understand their health status and
if necessary, seek further treatment.
The popular event provided more than 2,400
free health screenings and risk assessments.

The Inland Woods Trail is an increasingly
popular destination for people of all ages
to be active outdoors.
And to further encourage local residents
to engage in “active transportation”,
Inland and other community partners
launched Waterville Walks to mark
several walking routes from downtown
to popular destinations around town.
Inland provides ongoing support for
organizations like the Waterville Opera
House that enhance quality of life and
make Greater Waterville a desirable
community in which to live, work, and play.

In 2012, Inland’s Community Benefit Program
donated nearly $70,000 to these community
partners and schools for health initiatives,
economic, educational and cultural efforts:
Inland is a proud sponsor of KVCAP’s low-cost,
convenient transportation in Central Maine: The KV
Van Medical and Social Service Transportation
Program which provided service to 6,696 people over
the last year for 380,485 trips to the doctor and other
vital appointments. The Kennebec Explorer Public
Transit Program added a bus stop at Inland Hospital
in 2012. Kennebec Explorer provided 64,329 rides
in Kennebec and Somerset Counties, a 45% increase
over the previous year.
Inland supports the essential work of organizations
serving vulnerable populations like the Mid-Maine
Homeless Shelter and the Summer Sandwich program.
Inland contributed to the new homeless
shelter construction, completed last fall.

your support makes a difference
Focusing on Your Future
I
t is an exciting time as we prepare for the future of healthcare
at Inland and in Waterville! We are renovating our medical-
surgical unit to create a state-of-the-art healing environment
that promotes even better patient care. The $5.4 million dollar
renovation will involve consolidating the medical-surgical
and intensive care units, and renovating the unit’s original
semi-private rooms to private inpatient rooms that ensure the
safest healing environment and offer more space for
family and friends to be involved. This is one of the many ways
we are focusing on your future.
Many thanks to Unity Foundation and UniTel, Inc. for
sponsoring this year’s “friend raiser” for Inland’s Fall Pops
Concert which supported Inland’s Focusing on Your Future
campaign to renovate inpatient services.
Y
our donation to the Focusing on Your Future campaign
will ensure that your community hospital can continue
to provide the best care for all patients in Waterville and the
surrounding towns. Please remember that gifts of appreciated
stock and securities are options that may help your tax strategies. To contribute or get involved in our effort, please contact
Donna-Jo Mitchell, MBA, Director of Philanthropy, Inland
Hospital Foundation, 861-3377 or [email protected].
Look for Inland and Lakewood’s donor listings for 2012 in our
Report on Philanthropy to be published in early 2013.
Members of the community and Inland Hospital family
showed their support for Lakewood residents as they bid on
auction items while having fun and raising nearly $22,000
at the annual May Day Auction. Funds were used for
Lakewood residents to enjoy a coastal vacation with 24 hour
care (right photo). 25 new recliners for residents were also
purchased from the auction proceeds.

Medical-Surgical Renovation Groundbreaking
Community supporters and staff cheered
as John Dalton, Inland’s President and
CEO, stated at the renovation ground
breaking in September 2012, “Inland
is committed to Waterville and we are
proud to strengthen this hospital’s
role as a place where patients and
families always come first.” The
renovation is expected to be
complete by late summer 2013.
The community’s generous support of the Fall Pops Concert
exceeded $63,000-proceeds will benefit Inland’s renovation
project underway now. Photo below: Charlie Gaunce,
Waterville businessman and Inland supporter, was
honored as campaign chair at the concert.

highlights
Recognized as a Top Rural Hospital by the Leapfrog Group.
The award reflects Inland’s excellence in patient safety and
quality as measured by achieving standards of care, such as
preventing medication errors through the use of computerized
systems, and achieving a high “value” score which is a combination
of quality and resource use.
implemented
Implemented a Barcode Medication Verification System as a
new powerful tool toward ensuring patient safety. Nurses scan
patients’ barcoded wrist bands to ensure they have the right patient,
scan the medication to verify both name and dose correspond with
the patient’s orders and when all is confirmed by the computer, the
nurse will administer the medication.

“Being a volunteer at Inland has
added a new dimension and
balance to my life,” says Sandra.
“The benefits are endless —
interacting and helping patients
and staff, making new friends,
and being part of the events that
help our community become
healthier — it’s just an honor
to be involved.”
S
andra has been a cheerful, helpful volunteer in Inland’s front
lobby and gift shop for two years. Her smile is infectious and
her warm, positive attitude is comforting.
Sandra started volunteering long before she retired in 2003 as
New England District Manager for the Corning Revere Factory
Stores. She helps out at her church, has volunteered at the local
Hospice and at the Waterville Opera House. After her parents
were patients at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, she joined
Lakewood’s board of directors to share her perspective as a
family member. While she has retired from the board, she still
assists with Lakewood’s May Day Auction.
Sandra hopes she is an example for others to “pay it forward”
with all the blessings in their lives.
