47th Ward Welcome Guide — for new residents
47th Ward Amazing Facts!

Lincoln Avenue was once an Indian trail that ran through presettlement Chicago. Prior to Lincoln’s assassination, it was known
as Little Fort Road because it led to Little Fort (now Waukegan).

Carl Sandburg, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and journalist, lived
at 4646 N. Hermitage Avenue for three years while writing the
famous poem “Chicago.” The house is one of nine Chicago
landmarks in the ward.

The Selig Polyscope Company, housed in buildings on Byron near
Western, produced some of America’s earliest motion pictures.

The 47th Ward area was originally a center of local pickle and
celery production, farmed by such notable Chicagoans as Joseph
Budlong and Conrad Sulzer. The celery and pickles were
purchased in part by growing populations of German and Polish
immigrants in the neighborhood.

The Old Town School of Folk Music, at 4544 N. Lincoln, is the
largest independent community arts school in the United States,
and their 2007 Welles Park event holds the Guinness world record
for largest music lesson ever conducted.

One of the last works of famous Chicago architect Louis
Sullivan, the Krause Music store, is located in Lincoln Square. It
was named a Chicago landmark in 1977.

Riverview, Chicago’s famous and beloved amusement park, was
located between Western and the river, just north of Belmont. It
operated between 1904 and 1967, attracting visitors from across
the country.

The Von Steuben Day Parade, sponsored by the United
German-American Societies of Greater Chicago, was featured in
the 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Musical theater legend Bob Fosse lived in the ward, on both
Hermitage and Paulina.

Originally located in the 47th, Abbott Laboratories was one of
the first major producers of penicillin.

Parking Guide
All new residents must register vehicles used in the
City of Chicago by obtaining a city sticker within 30
days. Stickers are available for purchase at the City
Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Room
107, (312) 744-6861, City Clerk Satellite Office, 5430
N. Gale St., (312) 742-5318, or Department of
Revenue Substation, 2550 W. Addison St., (312) 7447275. They can also be purchased at many currency
exchanges. Prices range based on size and type of the
vehicle; see www.chicago47.org/resident/parking/cityvehicle-stickers.
Residential zone parking permits are included on
your city sticker if required to park on your block for
an additional $25 fee. The sticker and guest passes can
be purchased at the City Clerk’s office at City Hall,
121 N. Lasalle St., Room 107, (312) 744-6861 or at the
City Clerk Satellite Offices, 5430 N. Gale St., (312)
742-5318. Additional permit parking information
available at
www.chicago47.org/resident/parking/residentialpermit-parking.
LV2 (Cubs Night Game) permits and guest passes
are available here, at the 47th Ward Public Service
Office, 4243 N. Lincoln Ave., (773) 868-4747. LV2
permits must be displayed for all Cubs night games and
concerts, and should be obtained one month prior to
the start of the season.
Be aware of where you park your car in the ward!
With several business corridors and transportation
hubs in our ward, parking can be difficult.
Any business district could have metered parking but
not all do. Keep an eye out for signs indicating pay
parking, directing you to the pay box. Several
residential permit parking zones cover over 60 blocks
in the ward. You must have the correct zone permit to
park in an area. Some zones have different hours from
one block to the next so it is important to be aware of
the posted restrictions.
