Dr Feelgood remain one of the most popular and exciting
live rhythm and blues acts in the world. The raw and
uncompromising style of their performance resulted in

gave the group their first gold record. The current line-up
features Kevin Morris on drums, Phil Mitchell on bass and

Shakespears Sister, along with
Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama.
Detroit’s soprano voice provided
lead vocals on their biggest hit,

in 1992. While she is best known for her work with Shakespears
Sister, she has had a much wider career. She began in 1972
playing in Bob Seeger’s band. Before long, she was playing in

Two of Britain’s most critically acclaimed and popular
instrumental groups are touring together for the first time.
Their leaders Jonny Phillips (Oriole) and Ben Davis (Basquiat
Strings), great friends for many years, have much in common
from classical, Brazilian, and jazz music to travel and humour.
The bands also share the same drummer, Seb Rochford (Polar
Bear). Although both utilize the earthy raw sounds of folk/
jazz/classical music informed by tradition, the sound of the
their two groups varies greatly. Both groups have new albums.
Oriole’s first album since Jonny’s return from Spain - Every Day
New was released in May 2012 to the usual critical success,
whereas Basquiat Strings, whose first album was nominated
for the Mercury award, will be releasing their exceptional second
album - Basquiat Strings - part II – as part of the May 2013

Jimmy Brewer is a songwriter, a guitar player and a singer,
but he is not your typical sad acoustic troubadour. He has
the power to silence a room with little more than an intro.
He captures an audience and takes them on an emotional
rollercoaster ride, leaving them exhausted, amazed and
fulfilled. Growing up he found inspiration amongst his
parents’ record collection. His early influences such as
the Rolling Stones and The Beatles are still perhaps the
most important, but with the addition of the old school
sounds of Nat King Cole and Fats Domino through to the
more contemporary styling of Jeff Buckley, the quirkiness
of David Bowie, the wit of Jerry Reed and the imagination
of Tom Waits. This diverse range of influences is very
much in evidence on his debut album As Time Stands Still
demonstrating that the craft of classic songwriting

blues! In this practical workshop, Joff Watkins demystifies
V-IV-Is, turnarounds, shuffles and basic basslines and
introduces blues techniques such as finger picking,
hammer-ons and pull-offs, using examples from classic
blues recordings. Joff is an accomplished player who
combines performing and teaching, including leading
the popular harmonica workshops here at The Stables.

We are delighted to welcome back vocal animateur Gitika
Partington for our annual Big Sing event. This one-day
workshop will include an exciting mix of a cappella
arrangements in a variety of musical styles. Suitable for
beginners, community choirs and anyone interested in
harmony singing, Gitika is a highly experienced workshop
leader who has worked with all ages and abilities.
An information packed day aiming to de-mystify music
theory, whether you are an beginner looking for a way into
understanding music, or an intermediate or experienced
musician looking for a refresher or to fill gaps in your knowledge.
Starting with the most basic terminology and theory, the day
covers the nature of sound, how music started, pitch, scales,
and chords, what the key of a song means and how to find
it, and what do some of the more complicated ideas mean.
Through explaining basic concepts and simplifying complicated
terminology, the day aims to help you understand the principles
of music. Particularly helpful to those taking their first steps
in learning to play, whatever the instrument. (You do not need
to bring your instrument but if you do have an acoustic guitar,
please bring it along). Course leader Pete Normanton is a
highly experienced musician and guitar teacher, specialising
in making music accessible to the “non-musician”.
An exciting opportunity to show off those new or hidden
talents. Ever attended one of the Stables Education events,
like the ukulele, harmonica or songwriting workshops,
or worked hard for six weeks on the Ceilidh or Rock
Experience? Now is the time to use those talents and get
the experience of the Over 2U open mike night. It’s a safe
environment with lots of other people with similar talents
and experience, supporting each other through what might

Following a hugely successful workshop in 2010 we are delighted to welcome back
Beth Nielsen Chapman leading one of her much sought-after creative song-writing
workshops. A renowned writer of many hits for other artists as well as herself, Beth
is in demand as a song-writing teacher and creative coach, having taught at such
schools as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, the Liverpool Institute of
Performing Arts and Berklee School of Music in Boston, and numerous festivals and
venues internationally. Beth presents her unique and inspiring style of teaching in
much the same way she approaches writing itself. For any writer in need of a boost
of creative energy, this journey into the workings of the creative flow will cover some
great tips and advice on how to step fully into your centre and find your voice, in
writing and singing as well as keeping your balance in the performance of your songs.
Songwriters of all genres will benefit from her unique and inspiring teaching style.

Ukulele Workshop – Beginners Part 2
Adult/15+ Workshop
Ukulele tutor Sara Spade returns with a chance for ukulele
players to further develop their playing. Building on
Beginners Part 1 this new workshop will help you move
on in your rhythm and melody playing skills, adding new
chords, techniques, and combining different strokes for
rhythmic effects. Using a mix of contemporary and vintage
material, you’ll also get chance to practice as a ukulele
band and take on the different roles of accompanying,
melody and adding colour to the musical arrangements.
Previous attendance at Ukulele Beginners Part 1 is
recommended. Participants will need to bring a soprano

Spinadisc is a specialist music shop in The

Genres covered include rock, pop, jazz,
blues, folk, classical & alternative.
Come and take part in the ukulele revival! This fun and
accessible instrument is making a comeback for serious
musicians and in education. Learn the basics of playing,
how to accompany songs and ukulele techniques. Ukulele
tutor Sara Spade is an experienced performer, songwriter
and teacher. As well as a busy performing career she
regularly teaches guitar, ukulele and songwriting to all
ages. Sara brings the ukulele up to date as an instrument
to accompany contemporary songs, as well keeping it
rooted in a tradition of performing authentic vintage
material. No prior experience necessary! Participants
will need to bring a soprano ukulele. Tea/coffee provided.

Expert melodeon player Simon Care is back with another
chance to try the small but mighty squeezebox, with
instruments provided so beginners can have their first go.
Drawing on traditional English dance tunes, the workshop
will introduce basic technique, how to play with rhythm
and feel, and how to play with other musicians. This is for
anyone with an interest in English folk music, folk dance,
or trying a squeezebox for the first time. Participants do not
need to read music notation, no previous squeezebox or folk
music experience is required but a basic knowledge of music
(scales, chords, time signatures) will help. Notes provided.

throughout the UK and abroad come together
to take part in an inspiring week-long musical
experience. From orchestral playing to jazz
improvisation, from harmonica sessions to steel
pan performance, from music theatre production
to recorder and rock bands, the National Youth
Music Camps has it all. For all young people
interested in music, regardless of playing
standard - there is no minimum grade of entry.

Engineering
For aspiring rock and pop musicians who would like the
chance to play in a band, meet other musicians and learn from
experienced tutors. Whatever your instrument, whether you
are a back-bedroom guitarist, budding vocalist, or interested
in forming a band of your own, The Rock Experience is a great
opportunity to take the first steps. You’ll be supported and
coached by our tutors in rehearsal and performance skills,
finishing on the final Sunday in a gig on The Stables stage.
You need to have some experience of playing your instrument
and be confident enough to have a go playing alongside other
people, but no previous band experience is necessary. If you
are in an existing or newly formed band and would like to
