“SUPER” First Foals for
Super Ninety Nine!
Super Ninety Nine officially became a sire this spring as his first foals are being born! He is
stamping them right away with his blaze and socks. His first foal was a colt born in Pennsylvania
out of the stakes-placed, $256,000-earner My Sonata (her first foal as well). The chestnut colt is
a sharp individual who is balanced and correct, and he and his dam have returned to Country Life
to breed back to Super Ninety Nine. A number of other mares foaled their Super Ninety Nine foals
recently, including a fabulous filly for An T M (dam of stakes-placed Flash McCaul). There were
also outstanding Super Ninety Nine foals born
at Country Life. Platinum Mine, owned by
Spendthrift Farm, had a beautiful bay (soon to
be grey?) filly with a blaze and sock on April
22nd. Then on April 30th, Ken Lowe’s mare
Helen Louise, dam of 2-year-old winner Hell of
Afire (by Friesan Fire) had a big, pretty bay filly
with a blaze and sock.
Look for many more super foals by Super
Ninety Nine in May and June, as we expect to
foal 19 more Super Ninety Nine’s here at Country Life alone! The young sire is by Tapit’s sire
Pulpit, and out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song,
the Number One broodmare sire of 2015.

Cal Nation 2 YO’s Training Well
Three years ago, Cal Nation was covering his first book of mares. Two years ago,
we were welcoming his first crop of correct, athletic foals into the world. Now those
first foals are in training and are drawing rave reviews from their trainers and owners.
His first starter, Faze the Nation, is entered for Friday, May 6th at Laurel. The filly, out
of the stakes-placed Malibu Moon mare Sunday in Malibu, was foaled and raised at
Country Life and Merryland for owner/breeder Linda Walls of Cleveland, Ohio. She
was broken at Merryland and sent to trainer Phil Schoenthal in March. Good luck to
her and her connections!
Cal Nation also has 4 entries in the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-olds-in-Training
sale on May 23-24. The Under Tack show, where they will breeze on the Timonium
racetrack, takes place from May 17-19 starting at 8 am each day (Friesan Fire also
has several entries in the sale). It’s looking like it will be an exciting spring and
summer for Cal Nation’s first crop!

April was a busy month on these 2 horse farms, between training the racehorses at Merryland and breeding/
foaling at Country Life there was hardly time for anything else! 21 foals were born and 106 breedings took
place in the month of April alone. There are not enough hours in the day this time of year!
