Dear Republican Women Federated,
Wendy Brubaker did an outstanding job AS
Chairperson for the Leadership Seminar and we
owe her a debt of gratitude. THANK YOU, Wendy!
Putting 6 Workshops together, Presidents, Membership, Election Integrity Project, Newsletters, Bylaws-Parliamentarian and
Finances is definitely not an easy job.
The presenters at these workshops were excellent, Nancy Eisenhart as
moderator of the Membership workshop and her panel consisting of Joy
Bliss, Wendy Brubaker, Maria Michel, Linda Toomajain and Pat Weiss;
Linda Paine presenting Election Integrity Project; Newsletter Workshop by
Bobbie Albanese; Bylaws/Parliamentarian with Elaine Klock and Martha
House doing the Finances Workshop. Thank you to each of you.
Assemblywoman Shannon Grove of Bakersfield as keynote speaker was
outstanding and we came away knowing that we can be the David (LACFRW) that fights Goliath (Liberals).
This year may each of us be a part of the GRAND movement to change
California politics and Make a Difference.

COAST GUARD
4 August 1790 – President George Washington
signs the Tariff Act that authorizes the construction
of ten vessels, referred to as “cutters,” to enforce
federal tariff and trade laws and to prevent

in size and responsibilities as the nation grew.
ON JANUARY 28, 1915 – The Revenue Cutter
Service merges with the U.S. Life-Saving Service,
and is officially renamed the Coast Guard, making
it the only maritime service dedicated to saving life
at sea and enforcing the nation’s maritime laws.

Magazine in an article by Princeton’s Peter Singer on how Obama will ration your care. As a health
care expert, Ms. Pipes has debated Paul Krugman, Princeton Economics Professor and New York Times
columnist, in New York at Rockefeller University. Sponsored by Intelligence Squared, the debate
was attended by 450 people and was viewed by 270 million around the world through NPR and BBC
Worldwide.
In 2009, she debated Princeton Professor Uwe Reinhardt and Harvard’s Dr. David Himmelstein twice
on the “No” side of the motion that “universal health coverage is the responsibility of the Federal
government.” She appeared in Michael Moore’s movie “Sicko” and has participated in prominent
debates and public forums, testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, committees of
the California and Oregon legislatures, appeared on popular television programs including debating
former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, participated in talk radio shows nationwide, and had 130
opeds published on health care issues in 2009. Ms. Pipes served on the Medical Advisory Council of
Genworth Financial’s Long-Term Care Insurance Division in 2006, the National Advisory Board of
Capital Research Center, the Advisory Board of the California Association of Scholars, and the State
Policy Network President’s Advisory Council.
MARK ISLER
Mark recently ran for a seat on the Los Angeles City Council. Although Mark didn’t win, he
received widespread acclaim as a dynamic speaker and candidate. The Los Angeles Daily News said
he was the only candidate receiving applause for his performance. He was endorsed for this position by
Attorney General Dan Lungren and Supervisor Mike Antonovich, among others.
Mark is currently Bruce Herschensohn’s delegate to the state Republican Party. Before he was
nominated to that position, Mark was one of the chief substitute speakers for Mr. Herschensohn in his
Senate campaign.
During 1991-1992, Mark served as Chairman of the Los Angeles County Republican Party
Speaker’s Bureau.
For the past three years Mark has hosted and produced a television show called “Saving the American
Dream”. The show is an inspiring and challenging look at issues in the news. Guests have included
Governor George Deukmejian, Attorney General Dan Lungren, former Senatorial candidate and
television commentator Bruce Herschensohn, Mayor Stephen Goldsmith of Indianapolis, talk show
hosts: Ken & John, Michael Reagan, Larry Elder and Dennis Prager.

Dear Republicans
I am running for the LA College Board on March 3rd, to reverse a long decline in the quality and
performance of our educational system. We spend a lot of money on education but what we
accomplish with that money is a disgrace. The community colleges, for example, have had to become
remedial institutions because of the failures of the lower grades. We must reverse that trend.
I am the only Republican running against three Democrats, supported by different union factions,
who are therefore likely to split their vote. There is no runoff, if I can get enough Republicans to turn
out on March 3rd, I will win the election. I am already known from my radio shows on 790 KABC
and 870 KRLA, and for filling in on the nationally syndicated Dennis Prager Show, but I need to
reach those Republicans who do not know me.
The reason we often loose elections in LA County and beyond, is because the students never hear our
side. When they learn the government has no money of its own, for example, or that minimum wage
laws can hurt teenage employment, they frequently say I never heard that before. If I win this
election they will hear our side.
I cannot win this election unless we get our message out, and you can help by sending a contribution
in any amount, there are no limits, to Mark Isler for College Board, at 5707 Willis Ave. Sherman
Oaks, Ca. 91411. Even the smallest amount will be appreciated. If you can’t help in that way, you
can certainly join our volunteer team by e-mailing back the names of 10 people or more, who we
can write to about my campaign, or if you feel more comfortable doing it yourself, you can send your
friends a note directly urging them to vote for me by absentee ballot in early February, or by going
to the polls on March 3rd. You may not live in the district which stretches from Westlake Village to
Palos Verdes, including all of the city of Los Angeles, but you are likely to have friends in this huge
district.
If I win this election we will not only begin to turn our educational system around but we will make
it easier for candidates with my views to win in the future.
I am hoping you can help.
All the best.
Mark Isler,
Candidate for LA College Board
Interesting Blurb From the Economist
California’s 8th-graders (14-year-olds), for example,
ranked 46th in math last year. Only Alabama,
Mississippi and the District of Columbia did worse.
California also sends a smaller share of its high-school
graduates to college than all but three other states.
One of its roughly 1,000 school districts, Los Angeles
Unified, which happens to be the second-largest in the
country, has just become the first to be investigated by
the federal Office for Civil Rights about whether it
adequately teaches pupils who have little or no English.

How fortunate we are to have as our February Speaker, Michael
Reagan!!!! Mike is one of the most dynamic and sought after
public speakers in the public arena today. His commitments to
public service and the conservative vision his father championed
are second to none, making him the natural heir to the Reagan
conservative legacy. Michael spent nearly two decades as a
conservative radio talk show host, heard across the country daily
on a show syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks. He left this
position to travel the country in order to champion President
Reagan’s values and principals in the public policy forum and
through candidates who embody his father’s legacy. He has
established a foundation. You can find out more about this
foundation at Reaganlegacyfoundation.org
This is one speaker you don’t want to miss!! Michael Reagan
knows more than most about the”ins and outs” of the Republican
Party. Hear his assessment of the Obama Administration , the
Middle East and Islamist Terrorism. Bring your husbands, family
members and friends. Reservation information at left. This will be
one of our most informative and exciting meetings!! ~Janet Price

SEEING STARS
Memoirs of a Freelance Celebrity Articles Writer
By Shirley Lee Ames
This book review is a departure from my usual political books.
One of our very own Los Angeles County Republican Women
Federated member, Shirley Ames, asked her publisher to send me her book to
review. I was amazed at all the celebrities from many years ago about whom
she has visited and written articles. I loved seeing all the photographs of
Shirley with these stars. The name of her book is as brilliant as the stars she
has visited. Very appropriate title!
Most of these stars own lovely collectible items. As a freelance writer
Shirley was commissioned to write for various publications, one of which
seems to occur most often was a collectibles magazine.
I came across a review of Seeing Stars and I couldn’t have written it better myself so, in part,
I am going to share it with you:
“This is an enjoyable book of nostalgia out of the mouths of the stars that performed on stage,
the big screen and television. Along with her longtime photographer and friend, Ralph
Merlino, the two of them have created a book of wonderful memories. This book is loaded
with 64 Chapters on the insight of the various actors and actresses from the 1930s, 1940s and
1950s era. The author would visit their homes, interview and write articles about them for an
assortment of magazines and newspapers, along with impressive pictures.”
Many favorites are included – Steven Allen, Mel Blanc, Ray Bolger, Cyd Charisse, Angie
Dickinson, Shelley Duvall, Buddy Ebsen, Nanette Fabray, Glenn Ford, Anne Francis, Eva
Gabor, Earl Holliman, Bob and Dolores Hope, George Kennedy, Louis L’Amour, Carol
Lawrence, Michele Lee, Janet Leigh, Virginia Mayo, Jayne Meadows, Margaret O’Brien,
Donald O’Connor, Jack Palance, Fess Parker, Jane Powell, Vincent Price, Lynn Redgrave,
Buddy Rich, Mickey Rooney, David Rose, Marion Ross, Sabu, John Saxon, Richard
Simmons, Tori Spelling, Gale Storm, Sally Struthers, Rod Taylor, Dick Van Dyke, Adam
West, Betty White, Mary Wicks, Jonathan Winters & The Wizard of Oz section.
