From the Principal’s Desk
As we close this school year, we have many things to celebrate: Graduation, retirements, staff, students, and most important academic success.
Permit me to take this opportunity to express my personal appreciation for the efforts you have made
over the past months. We have continued to put emphasis on the quality of academic programs available to Springville students. We have demonstrated again this year that our students are learning well.
Iowa Assessments show we had 113 students improve reading scores, for which they received a wristband at the “Got Brains” assembly held on May 16, 2012.
We graduated 24 seniors this year. We wish them the greatest success for their futures. It is awesome
to watch them mature and become such fine young ladies and gentlemen.
We say good by to some outstanding staff members. Mr. Bill Nelson will be retiring from the school
after 36 years of service. Mrs. Mary Wright will be retiring from the school after 16 years of service.
Mr. Brian O’Donnell will become the elementary principal of St. Pius School, and finally Mr. Jared
Baumann is leaving and moving to South Dakota.We wish these individuals the greatest success for
what lies ahead for them. They will all be missed.
The last day of school was spent reviewing finals and attending a picnic at Cox Lake and enjoying a
talent show. Thank you to the city of Springville for the use of Cox Lake and especially to Todd and
Jennifer Wyman for helping organize this.
As another outstanding year of schooling comes to a close, I take this opportunity to thank the entire
staff and community for its good efforts and hard work. We do make a difference in the lives of our
students, and through them I believe we are making the world incrementally a better place for everyone.

John Deere F935 Diesel For Sale
The Springville CSD is accepting closed bids for a 22
HP John Deere F935 Diesel tractor with front mower,
2609 hrs. and 72” deck. Bids are due in the superintendent’s office by noon on June 14, 2012. Bids must
be in a sealed envelope marked “John Deere Purchase.”
The bid must specify the amount the bidder wants to
purchase. Please include your name, address, phone
number(s), and e-mail if applicable. The board reserves
the right to reject any or all bids. If you have any questions, please contact Curt Morrow at 319-36101114.
Preschool Sign Up
We are still taking names for our
2012-2013 Preschool programs. Our 3
year old preschool will meet Tuesday
and Thursday mornings from 8:15 –
11:00 a.m. the cost for this would be
$85 a month. Our 4 year olds would
meet Monday – Friday afternoon, the
hours being 12:15 – 3:08. Once again
there will be no cost to 4 year olds.

5th Grade News
As the fifth grade year came to a close, the students enjoyed putting together solar cars from The
University of Northern Iowa. They were able to experiment, problem solve, and use YouTube videos to
assemble and demonstrate the principles of solar energy with their cars. The class also visited the Old
Capital in Iowa City and appreciated seeing history in
person. Students were amazed by the burnt bell, the
winding staircase, the voting chambers, and other
items directly linked to Iowa History. In the Natural
Museum, they saw the past through various artifacts
and enjoyed visiting Bird and Mammal Hall and seeing all the animals. At the Devonian Fossil Gorge,
they learned about the floods of recent years that had
uncovered the past and loved searching for fossils in
the gorge. The class would like to thank CAST for
supporting their field trips and giving them the opportunity to visit these places.

Updates from the Elementary Gym:
Wow what a wonderful day we had for our annual
track day at Springville Elementary School! The
weather was outstanding and it was an exciting
day for all who participated in track day. I would
first like to thank the parent volunteers that helped
us with track day and the student helpers in Mr.
Martin’s physical education classes. Without all of
your help track day would not run like we would
want it to be. I would like to thank all of the staff
we have here in our schools at Springville and for
all the things they do for our students. I would like
to thank the parents who came to watch their sons
and daughters compete at track day.
The students worked hard in preparation for track
day and their efforts did not go unnoticed. I
thought the students were enthusiastic, positive,
and showed good sportsmanship throughout the
track races, field events, and games. The elementary students will receive track day ribbons for
their outstanding participation in track day events.
This has been a great first yeat for me in the
Springville Community School District. I have
enjoyed working with your sons and daughters at
recess, in the classroom, and in the gym. Have a
great and safe summer vacation!

SECONDARY BUILDING
This year was an awesome year for me as a teacher
here at Springville Schools. This was my fifth year teaching
physical education and health as the only secondary physical
education teacher. Also was the first year of our new gymnasium that the students got to use during their physical education classes.
In physical education with the middle schools students
we did a variety of units including volleyball, basketball,
floor hockey, and softball. They also did some not so traditional units including badminton/pickle ball, Frisbee golf,
and handball. During our basketball unit we helped the
American Heart Association and participated in Hoops for
Heart raising over $400. The middle school students also had
the opportunity to use our brand new archery equipment that
was purchased by a grant from National Archery in the
Schools Program, providing them with proper technique and
experience of shooting a bow so they may think about joining our Archery Club next school year.
In physical education with the high school students we
again tried to allow them to choose what type of class they
had. Since I was the only teacher, students had Physical Education every other day. Also they could choose from weight
lifting, recreation (traditional PE), or LifeTime PE (golf,
volleyball, etc. – activities they can do at any age). During
that time students were involved in units that including lacrosse, football, basketball, and floor hockey.
The high school students, along with the middle
school students also held their 3rd Annual Relay Recess here
at Springville. My dad decided to run 62 miles (100 kilometers) with students participating during physical education
class and throughout the day. With the help from the American Cancer Society and ASAC, our community held this all
day event and raised $1500 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
This was my third year teaching health to high school
students, which was a lot more hands on this year for the
students. The students made projects, posters, games, and
even taught a lesson, showing comprehension of the topics
discussed. The students learned a lot about their physical,
emotional, and social health and how that is impacting them
now and in the future. This was also the first year we had the
Young Parents Network come out in coordination with our
“Making Proud Choices” curriculum. This curriculum is a
safe-sex approach to HIV/AIDS and STDs. This curriculum
allowed students to gain knowledge on the subject and hopefully give them a better understanding of it too.
All in all, this year was another exciting one for me. I
am anxiously waiting for next year already and cannot wait
to improve on what has been done in physical education and
health. I am looking forward to the “modified” schedule for
physical education which will allow me to have another high
school class along with being able to use all the new facilities and equipment the whole year here at Springville.

BOARD WORK SESSION
A Board Work Session was held at 6:15 p.m. on May
15, 2012 prior to the Regular Board Meeting with Lee
Ann Grimley, Tami Gillmore, Judy Studt, Todd Nulle,
Dennis Thies, Superintendent Terry Rhinehart, Secondary Principal/Instructional Leader Shauna Dennison, Elementary Principal/Activities Director Kyle
Koeppen, and Board Secretary/Business Manager
Stacey Matus present. Dinner was served by Mr.
Rhinehart and Mrs. Matus as a token of appreciation
to the board members for their time, dedication, and
service to the Springville Community School District.
The work session ended at 6:59 pm. No action was
taken.

COMMUNICATIONS/REPORTS
Terry Rhinehart, Superintendent/Transportation Director/Curriculum Director reported on the following:
Attended training conducted by Dr. Richard Elmore
on superintendent network rounds and how to write
theories of action, problem of practice, use of information, collection of data, writing questions, and presenting outcomes; Completed Superintendent Network rounds at Mt. Vernon CSD; Attended the executive leadership meeting hosted by SAI as part of a
group studying the state funding formula to make
recommendations for improvement; AEA superintendent learning reviewed several technology resources; Superintendent Network continued to review the book “Focus” and set dates for next year’s
meetings; Tony Amsler from GWAEA visited with the
administration about the possibility of 1:1 computing,
support, infrastructure needs, ongoing training, and
maintenance plans; Attended State Superintendent
Advisory Council with the discussion centered
around school funding formula concerns, modified
allowable growth, and the lack of legislation passed
toward the education reform.
Lee Ann Grimley, Board President spoke about the
Legislative Conversation on Saturday, April 21, 2012
with Senators Dvorsky and Mathis present.
Shauna Dennison, Secondary Principal/Instructional
Leader reported on the following: 8th grade Adventureland trip is rescheduled for Monday, May 21 st;
Relay For Life event combined with the district’s Go
The Distance Day participation was phenomenal;
University of Northern Iowa Professor Charles
McNulty will be visiting to observe the district’s success in peer coaching and student analysis; and Invited the board members to attend the “Got Brains”
assembly to celebrate ITBS scores on Wednesday,
May 16th and the elementary track day events that
will follow.
Kyle Koeppen, Elementary Principal/Activities Director reported on the following: GWAEA intends to
look at the district’s technology equipment, internet
set up, and server systems to determine if Springville
would be eligible to have a trial of a new initiative that
the agency wants to implement to give support to
local school districts on IT services; Expressed appreciation to the elementary teachers on their flexibility when doing a trial run of the collaboration schedule with survey results from the trial week providing
positive feedback and areas to improve the process
for next year; Volunteer recognition assembly at the
elementary to show appreciation to the volunteers
who donated over 600 total hours for the 2011-12
school year; and Congratulations extended to the
Springville boys and girls state track qualifiers.
PUBLIC FORUM
President Grimley introduced guest Kristi Keast from
Mt. Vernon who is running for the Iowa House in the
new district 95. The board welcomed Kristi and
thanked her for attending the board meeting.
Rich Lorimer expressed his appreciation to Secondary
Principal Ms. Dennison for being an outstanding principal and making opportunities available for his son to
challenge himself academically.
BOARD LEARNING – CONVERSATIONS ABOUT
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR 2012-2013
Mr. Rhinehart shared professional development plans
for the 2012-13 school year. Kris Donnelly and Arlene
Brandt from Grant Wood AEA have sent information
and strategies with guiding questions to help the district stay focused on the reading goal. Importance of
determining the amount of time being spent on learning strategies we want to do to reach our goal verses
the amount of professional development time devoted
to learning strategies mandated by the state. Mr.
Rhinehart reiterated that teachers have a full plate with
analyzing student data, implementing anti-bullying and
harassing strategies, implementing Iowa Core standards, and implementing effective reading strategies.
NEW BUSINESS
APPROVE CONTRACT FOR CHEMICAL WATER
TREATMENT/PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE FOR
HVAC SYSTEM-SECONDARY
Dennis Thies made a motion to accept the recommendation to approve the contract for chemical water treatment/preventative maintenance for the HVAC secondary system from Brecke for the amount of $3,300.00.
Tami Gillmore confirmed with Mr. Rhinehart that the
chemical cost is included in the contract. All ayes, motion carried.
APPROVE AGREEMENT WITH THE SPRINGVILLE
EDUCATION ASSOCIATION
Judy Studt made a motion to accept the recommendation to approve the agreement with the Springville
Education Association for the 2012-13 school year.
The cost of the agreement is $69,975.00 with
$875.00 added to the base salary for a 4% total
package increase. All ayes, motion carried.
APPROVE FIRST READING OF BOARD POLICY
605.6 INTERNET APPROPRIATE USE POLICY
Dennis Thies made a motion to accept the recommendation to approve the first reading of board policy 605.6 Internet Appropriate Use Policy. The
changes in the policy are prompted by legislation.

DISCUSSION ITEMS
The board expressed their appreciation to Mr.
James Mitchell for donating $1,000.00 for elementary classroom supplies and materials and for participating in the Rockwell Collins Matching Gift Program.
Mr. Rhinehart reviewed the following meeting dates
and times: Graduation ceremony on Sunday, May
20, 2012; Design Team Meeting at Grant Wood on
May 23, 2012; Next regular board meeting on Thursday, June 21, 2012.

WELLNESS REPORT
The wellness committee was busy this year organizing
healthy choices and activities in the Springville
Schools. Both buildings organized mileage clubs that
sent us on a walk to Chicago. We had two schoolwide walks and enjoyed the community joining in with
us. Daily announcements contained Healthy Kids
Bulletins. The elementary had a bike ride and presentation on bike safety and students received free bike
helmets. At the secondary, the Relay for Life activity
was held to coordinate with Go the Distance Day, a
statewide healthy kids initiative. We also developed a
policy for healthy snacks in the preschool and kindergarten.
A big thank you goes to the individuals on the Wellness Committee: K O’Brien, Kyle Koeppen, Vince
Abel, Joe Martin, Megan Hall, Jake Hulett, Judy Studt,
Iris Trampe, Terry Rhinehart, Brandon Mysak, Haley
Moravec, and Shauna Dennison. Look for more to
come in the 2012-2013 school year.
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Iowa Assessments indicate an increase in Springville
student test scores. We had an increase that indicates
10% more of our students are proficient in reading
comprehension. Thanks to all the staff for working so
hard to make Springville students great readers.
2012-2013 Registration Information
Again this year in order to provide a more flexible
and cost effective approach to student registration,
Springville CSD will be requiring an online enrollment process for the 2012-2013 school year.
This process will begin in July, and in order to register your child online, you must have an account in
Powerschool for your child/children.

SPECIAL BOARD MEETING
President Lee Ann Grimley called the special meeting of
the Springville Community School District Board of Directors to order on May 22, 2012 at 6:36 pm. Other members
present were Judy Studt and Dennis Thies. Also present
was Superintendent Terry Rhinehart. Tami Gillmore and
Todd Nulle were absent.

Judy Studt made a motion to approve the agenda as presented. All ayes, motion carried.
CONSIDER RECOMMENDATION FOR CLASSIFIED &
ADMINISTRATIVE WAGES & SALARIES FOR 2012-2013
Judy Studt made a motion to accept the recommendation
for Classified & Administrative Wages & Salaries for 201213 to include a 4% increase with the exception of the 6-12
Secondary Principal/Instructional Leader to receive a 0%
salary increase and Superintendent/Curriculum Director/
Transportation Director cost to the district is decreased by
2.3%. All ayes, motion carried.
ACCEPT RESIGNATION
Dennis Thies made a motion to accept the recommendation to accept the resignation from Abby Backes as Elementary Teacher effective at the end of the 11-12 school
year. All ayes, motion carried.
APPROVE IAEP PURCHASING AGREEMENT
Judy Studt made a motion to accept the recommendation
to approve the IAEP Purchasing Agreement for the 201213 school year. All ayes, motion carried.
