Understanding and
Appreciating an American
Tradition-High School
Graduation
Ram S. Ravindran
The other day I attended a high school graduation
party given by one of my friends for his child. In the
gathering, was an Indian relative (who had come from
India for this occasion) of the graduating student.
During the course of the conversation, that person
remarked “in India we celebrate a student’s graduation
from University and not from high school like they do
here. They seem to make a big deal of it too”.
It used to puzzle me too many years ago. In India
it is taken for granted that students of the middle
class families are expected to finish at least college
education let alone high school education. High school
graduation is considered a big deal in the US? Why?
In the not too distant past, obtaining high school diploma
was indeed considered a great accomplishment in this
country. With high school diploma one could get a
decent job and support oneself financially. For many of
the trade jobs one has to have a high school diploma
to start the apprenticeship. Many students stopped
formal education at that level. A student is usually 18
by the time he/she finishes high school. The American
parents then and even now consider that their
responsibility for raising their children is over with high
school education. If the child wanted to work, marry,
join army or continue their higher education it was
their decision... American parents, after high school
education expect their children to decide on what they
want to do. They feel that the financial responsibility to
support a child ends with their high school education.
They expect their children to find a partner to get
married to.
A child becomes an adult at the age of 18. In some
states the driving license was issued only when they
turned 18. They could be tried in the court of law as
an adult. They can vote at 18. Some states used to
permit drinking and smoking at that age (now it is 21).
The children were sort of expected to learn to live by
themselves. After graduating their children from high
school the parents started saving money for their own
retirement. The American parents slowly encourage
the children to depend less and less on them. They
expect their children to do full or part time work. If they
lived with them after the age of 18 they are expected
to pay for their upkeep and additional expenses. So for
Americans turning 18 and graduating from high school
is a momentous occasion indeed. As we live longer
in this country we too adopt this tradition with greater
sense of appreciation. For another generation or so
we may continue to hold on to the Indian tradition of
guiding even the adult children in their pursuit of higher
education, selection of career and even life partners...
But we can sense that sooner or later, we will have to
let go off one tradition and take on a new one of this
adopted country of us. High school graduation is a big
deal because in most of the cases it occurs around the
important age of 18.
Yes, I am a Senior Citizen!
I am the life of party…even if lasts until 8:00 pm.
I am good at opening, child proof caps with a
hammer.
I am usually interested in going home, before I got
to where I am going.
I am smiling all the time, because I can’t hear a
thing you are saying.
I am good at telling stories, over and over and
over…
I am so cared for: Long Term Care, Eye Care,
Dental Care.
I am not grouchy: I just don’t like traffic,
waiting, crowds, lawyers, loud music, unruly kids,
commercials religious zealots, loud cell phone users,
barking dogs, politicians and few other things.
I can’t remember… I am wrinkled, saggy lumpy and
its just my left leg.
I am wondering, if you are only, as old as you feel,
how could I be alive at 150?
I am a walking storeroom, and I just lost the key to
the storeroom door.
Yes, I am a “Senior Citizen: and I think, “I” m
having a “time of my life”

A book review
Ram S. Ravindran
Title: An Immigrant Celebrates America
Reflections on America through the Fresh Eye of an Immigrant.
Author: Mel Ramaswamy
Publisher: The University of Indianapolis Press.
Asian Indian writers like Rushdie, Lahiri, Mukherjee, and Ghosh are making significant contributions
to the English literature. English books written by people of Indian origin have increased in number
to the point now there is a branch of literature that one could study called Indian English literature.
Melkote Ramaswamy (Mel) who served the Indian community twice as the editor of Bharati has
written a nice book entitled “An Immigrant celebrates America-Reflections on America through the
Fresh Eye of an Immigrant”. This book is a collection articles reflecting his take on life in America.
Most of the writings are one or two page articles on a variety of topics. A few of the articles have
appeared in Bharati and in local newspapers. Some of the articles are unique and interesting because
they reflect an Indian point of view. Some articles evaluate the oddities of American life and American
institutions. You can pick any of the articles at random and have a good chuckle reading them... Mel
is known for his play on words. It is clearly evident in some of the articles. I find this book interesting,
funny, and thought provoking. I highly recommend that you buy this book and enjoy reading it this
summer. IAI is takes great pride in knowing that more and more of our members continue to add to
the body of English literature.

YOUR OWN IAI - visit www.myiai.org
There can’t be an India Association of Indianapolis or Bharati or
ICC without members to support them. So If you are a person of
Indian Origin, please join the organization by becoming either
an Individual or family member. IAI preserves, and celebrates
your culture and special festivals/events. It provides you with
a forum for exchange of social and cultural views.
If you are a person of Non-Indian Origin, there isn’t a better
way to learn more about the Indian culture, the people and the
country. We understand and value diversity. We appreciate the
opportunity to express our heritage to non-Indian members
through various multi-cultural programs and other social
events.
We welcome you as a member of the India Association of
Indianapolis and look forward to your active involvement.
Pick up Your IAI Directory
The 9th edition (2007) of the directory of Indian-Americans living in
central Indiana is available. Current members (2007) will get a free
copy. Members can purchase additional copies by paying $25. Nonmembers can also purchase it for $25.
Due to high cost of mailing, we prefer if you can contact one of the
following individuals to pick up your directory in person.
Directories will also be available at all IAI events.
