VOLUNTEERISM
Last year at Crescenta Valley High, 77% of our graduating
seniors gave back to the La Crescenta community a total of
76,979 community service hours.
For the past eight years, Hoover High has participated in the
American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. This is their
signature community service event. More than $10,000 have
been raised each year by the students.
All 255 students in Clark Magnet Class of 2012 did
community service work for a total of 27,500 hours. More
than half of them donated over 100 hours.
At Daily High, seniors and super-seniors did community
service projects while the Juniors did CST testing in
May. Last year activities included students helping sort
donations at the Salvation Army and students reading to
elementary students at Marshall and RD White.
Glendale High Senior Class of 2012 completed a total of
39,544 service hours.

Academic Performance Index (API)
The Academic Performance Index (API) is a
single number, ranging from a low of 200 to
a high of 1000, which reflects a school’s or
a district’s performance level, based on the
results of statewide testing. Its purpose is
to measure the academic performance and
growth of schools. The goal for all schools
and districts is to achieve an 800 API score.
The API was established by a state law
passed in 1999 that created a new
academic accountability system for K-12
public education in California.

Visual and Performance Arts
(VAPA)
Glendale Unified School District believes in
the importance of teaching the Visual and
Performing Arts from K – 12th grade. The
capacity to think creatively, to create and
appreciate the arts is indispensable in
developing the “whole” person. The arts are
an integral part of the district’s instructional
program.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is the most common cancer
among American women after skin
cancer.
Today, about one in eight women will
develop breast cancer.
A person’s age, genetic factors, personal
health history, and diet all contribute to
breast cancer risk.
Men can get breast cancer.
30 minutes of exercise five days a week
can cut cancer risk by 20%.
There are currently 2.5 million breast
cancer survivors living in the United
States.
