KYOCERA MITA KM-3530
August 2003
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
One of the advantages the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 brings to the table is that it is the
result of not just the research and development of a copier company (Mita Copystar), but it is
also the work of an experienced printer company (Kyocera). Since the acquisition of Mita
Industrial by Kyocera Corporation in 2000, the two have been leveraging the expertise of the
other. This includes Kyocera’s printer controller and network technology. In the past, while
Mita was developing copiers, Kyocera was developing its ECOSYS network office printers,
using LED-array electrostatic imaging technology, which is a proven alternative to laser
technology. The benefit for products such as the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 is that
KYOCERA MITA can truthfully claim in its marketing materials “We know printing. We
know networking.” On the other hand, most of its copier competitors (with a few exceptions)
are relatively new to printers and networking compared to Kyocera. KYOCERA MITA’S
experience with network printing is showcased in one of the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530’s
interesting features – wireless network printing, which enables client computer workstations to
print to the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 without the device being connected to the local area
network with cabling and wiring.

NETWORK-PRINTER PRODUCTIVITY
IATSD determined printer productivity using its controlled Windows 2000 local area network using a Windows
2000 Professional client. Since printer productivity involves many minor variables (such as network
hardware/software throughput efficiency, network-queue polling times, network-server processing power and
computer-workstation processing power), the printer-productivity test results below may be difficult to replicate.
Productivity tests were performed using a 10-page Microsoft Word text document. Timings were performed using
default printer settings, and timing began from the “click of the mouse” until the complete exit of the print.

fast, and faster, in PostScript mode.
When compared to two other units rated at 35 ppm by their vendors and tested by IATSD:
•
•
The KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 was faster than one of the units in both PCL and PostScript simplex modes.
(in duplex mode, the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 was generally slower when printing 5 and 10 sets).
When compared to the other unit rated at 35 ppm by its vendor, the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 was faster in

PRINT DRIVERS
The KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 employs a unique print-driver system. There is only a single print driver and
user interface for PCL 5e, PCL XL (PCL 5e with an expanded feature set) and PostScript (Kyocera’s KPDL
PostScript emulation). The administrator or authorized user specifies which print driver they wish to use via an
option in the Windows’ Printer Folder.
Figure 1 – Using the printer’s “Properties” option, and the “User Settings” option, the user is indicating that the print driver
be KPDL (KYOCERA MITA’s PostScript emulation).
Figure 2 – The KYOCERA MITA KM-3530/4530 print driver (first tab). Because there is a single print-driver user
interface, all tabs will be the same for PCL, PCL XL and PostScript.

Print Driver Discussion
The KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 (as well as the KM-4530) employs a unique print driver that features a single
user interface for all three print drivers - the user selects either the PCL or PostScript driver via the Windows’
Printer Folder. This is convenient, as the user need not learn how to use different print-driver user interfaces.
Overall, IATSD found the PCL/PostScript printer driver very easy to use. We especially like some of the
interactive features. For instance, when the user selects a mailbox bin as an output option, a graphic automatically
changes to indicate what the effect of that adjustment will be.
However, if the user wishes to check installed paper sizes, types or levels, they must utilize the printer Web page
(WebPage) or Remote Operation Panel. Other solutions evaluated by IATSD feature print drivers with bidirectional communication that reflect the current status and configuration of the device each time they are
accessed. This minimizes print jobs that become “lost” or incorrectly printed, as users can be sure that the device
is ready to print before they send a print job to the printer.

Client Software Discussion
In order to view device readiness and status, users may consult KM-NET VIEWER’s Remote Operation Panel.
Remote Operation Panel displays the message currently displayed on the unit’s control panel. With Job Manager,
clients may track the progress of their print jobs.
As previously stated, other solutions evaluated by IATSD feature print drivers with bi-directional communication
that reflect the current status and configuration of the device each time it is accessed. This minimizes print jobs
that become “lost” or incorrectly printed, as users can be sure that the device is ready to print before they send a
print job to the printer.
IATSD found that the KM-NET VIEWER software suite easy to configure, and that it worked well and was of
consistent quality. A minor complaint was that it was too easy to “click on” and permanently close the utilities. It
would be more desirable if a “click” minimized the utilities in the Windows taskbar so that they are more readily
available to the user.
Also note that the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 may be equipped with a wireless printing option. This will be
especially convenient for “mobile” clients, such as laptop-computer users, that travel with their computer
workstation, and do not wish to be bothered with connecting and disconnecting their laptop computers to the
network in order to print.

Administration Software Discussion
KYOCERA MITA bundles the KM-3530 with a variety of tools for remotely installing, configuring, monitoring
and managing the unit on the network. These include Quick Setup Wizard for installing the unit on the network,
and KM-NET Viewer for viewing and managing the device and compatible SNMP-compliant third-party printers.
KM-NET Viewer also provides a utility for configuring automatic printer alerts indicating the status of the unit and
print jobs. KM-NET Viewer may also be used by clients for monitoring the device and their print jobs; a password
is required to access administrative options, such as printer configuration and network configuration.
AdminManager provides the administrator with even more advanced printer management, while WebPage
provides for remote management over the Web.
The unit also features compatibility with Hewlett-Packard’s JetAdmin software, so that it may be managed and monitored
with HP’s JetAdmin printer-management software. This is convenient for administrators who are used to JetAdmin and only
wish to use it.
Overall, the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 provides all of the tools most administrators will require remotely installing,
managing and monitoring the printer, as well as monitoring and managing print jobs.

Users can also create and manage a personal address book at their workstation. The password-protected personal
address books can be accessed at the device’s control panel. Files in a CSV format may be imported into the
WebPage destination database in order to assist in the destination-creation process.
Send-to-Desktop: The user may select a workstation destination from a local address book that “points” to the
user workstation’s IP address. Users may also access the personal address book that is managed on their
workstation. The Scanner File Utility must be running on the desktop in order for scans to be automatically
delivered.
Send-to-e-mail: The user may select pre-programmed e-mail addresses from the local or personal address book.
Send to e-mail capability is compatible with SMTP and POP3 mail servers.
Pull-to-Desktop: The user can utilize the TWAIN driver to remotely activate the scanner and “pull” scanned
documents to their computer desktop.
Send-to-Database: Users can utilize the Scanner File Utility and DB Assistant Utility and select either “KM-DB
Link Handler” (for the PDF Keyword Assist option) or “Database Link Handler” (for the Database Assist option).
This sends PDF files with keywords or CSV file information along with the scanned document.
Supported File Formats: Scanned documents may be sent in TIF or PDF format.
Software Component:
Features:
TWAIN Driver
The KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 TWAIN Driver enables users at their computer workstations
to scan documents directly into their software application using the “Acquire” function in their
application. For instance, with Microsoft Word, the user selects the “Insert Picture” option in
Microsoft Word, and then selects the “From Scanner or Camera” option. Next, the user
selects the KM-3530 TWAIN driver, and then selects “Scan.“ The user then loads the
document in the ADF (or places it on the platen), and presses the KM-3530’s “Start” key.
The document is then scanned directly into Microsoft Word. Alternately, the user first loads
the document in the document feeder, selects “Scanning” mode, then selects “Twain” mode.
Back at their computer workstation, the user then selects the TWAIN driver, and selects
“Scan,” and the document is then scanned directly into the application.
DB Assistant
The DB Assistant utility is composed of two options:
1. PDF Keyword Assist adds searchable text keywords to PDF files.
2. Database Assist saves file-information data for each scanned document in a *.csv file
that can be used in database applications.

Features:
Scanner File Utility
Scanner File Utility enables users to designate the computer file folder where scanned
documents should be sent; henceforth, all documents scanned by the user at the device are
automatically sent to that folder. The Scanner File Utility is displayed as an icon in the
Windows Task Bar. It operates as an FTP server so that the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 can
send scans directly to the computer workstation. Scanner File Utility can also be set to
automatically notify the user when the file arrives in the folder. Scanner File Utility can also
be used to send PDF readable text or a CSV file along with the scanned document.
Address Book
Using Address Book, administrators and/or users can conveniently manage destinations at
their computer workstation, adding, deleting or editing addresses as needed.
At the device’s control panel, the user may also access their personal address book by
selecting the “Private” option.
Paper Port Deluxe
Paper Port Deluxe is third-party Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. OCR
software is used to process scanned documents, converting them into a file format such as
Microsoft Word that may be edited.

Network-Scanning Discussion
Overall, the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 provides capable network scanning that is competitive with most other
digital imaging system’s network-scanning capability. That is, not only does it support scan-to-file, scan-to-e-mail
and scan-to-desktop, but it also features a QWERTY-style keypad to make scan-to-e-mail easy. Additionally,
administrators will appreciate authenticated scanning (users must enter their network passwords in order to scan),
and LDAP compatibility. Finally, a TWAIN driver is provided for “pull scanning.”

CONTROLS & MAINTENANCE
Figure 25 – The KYOCERA MITA KM-3530’s main control panel has large, clearly marked keys.
Adding Paper: Adding paper is easy, as there are no spring-loaded ramps or corner separators that users have to
contend with. The drawers are equipped with out stops, so there is no chance of users inadvertently pulling the
drawer entirely out of the unit.
Figures 26-27 – On the left is a user-adjustable paper drawer, while on the right is a dual-tray paper drawer.
Changing Paper Sizes: Changing paper sizes is relatively easy, as the user simply adjusts the sliding side-guide.
However, the back guide is removable and it takes sharp eyesight to locate the notch for the desired paper-size
change.
Adding Toner: Adding toner to the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 is very easy. Toner is enclosed in an easy to
install container, which slides easily inside the main unit.

Controls and Maintenance Discussion
Overall, most users will have little difficulty using the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530, as the control panel features
large, easy-to-use buttons, although the touch screen could benefit from more contrast. The touch screen is
uncluttered, making it easy to locate menu choices. One unique feature is that an administrator has the ability to
add and subtract menu items from the touch screen and control access to certain features in order to prevent users
from utilizing certain features.
The KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 also will be easy to live with on a day-to-day basis. It is easy to add paper as
well as change paper sizes in the paper trays, and the touch screen automatically indicates when a paper size is
changed, which is very convenient. It is also easy to add toner, and toner may be added while the KM-3530 is
printing.

Conclusion
After completing testing of the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530, IATSD was impressed overall by how the KM-3530
combines the expertise of Kyocera, an experienced printer vendor, and Mita Copystar, an experienced copier
vendor. The KM-3530 is a result of both “companies’” research and work. The two companies’ collaboration is a
result of their partnership that they formed several years ago, as now they form a single company.
What Kyocera contributes to this partnership is printer controllers, print drivers, printer software and
documentation, and its contribution reflects the fact that it is an experienced network-printer vendor. Thus, the
KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 as a network printer has the look and feel of a highly refined and technical device.
For instance, all of the KM-3530’s printer documentation is contained on CDs, and these CDs are clearly labeled,
well organized and easy to find. The bundled print drivers and printer utilities work well, and are a notch above
that of some other copier/printer vendors. Indeed, this is in contrast to some printer/copier vendors whose software
and documentation are sourced from several sources and resemble a collection of not-very-helpful “Read Me” files
contained on poorly organized CDs. With the KM-3530, it is clearly evident that the software was created by a
vendor with 15 years of experience in printer hardware, support, software development and distribution.
While the compatibility and performance of the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530’s controller is on par with that of
most printer/copier vendors, it has several key advantages:
1. The same controller may be used with other members of the KM product line.
2. The controller is designed and manufactured “in-house,” an advantage that few, if any of KM-3530’s
competitors have.
Mita’s expertise and influence has resulted in the following KM-3530 features:
1. A control panel containing large, clearly marked keys.
2. Sturdy controls and easy access to misfeed locations and maintenance items.
3. Easy-to-change maintenance items such as toner and paper.
4. Strong hardcopy-reproduction capabilities.
Because KYOCERA MITA is one of the only vendors that designs its own printer controller, software and
imaging devices entirely in-house, it has the potential to quickly respond with new products and product upgrades.
This is because other vendors must typically spend time coordinating the efforts of their engine designers with the
various third-parties hardware and software suppliers.
While the KYOCERA MITA KM-3530 is not perfect (it could benefit from minor improvements such as better
key labels, more touch-screen contrast, and print drivers that display additional status and configuration
information), it is a highly capable effort developed by a highly capable vendor. There’s a lot to like about the
KM-3530 and IATSD hopes that the KYOCERA MITA partnership will continue to result in such products.
